ON THE COVER

Santa visits the new Marple Civic Association, which will meet at 2340 West Chester Pike in Broomall

Marple

Later this month, a Merry Christmas will be celebrated by many, and we all surely need a Happy New Year after such a stressful 2020. It’s almost time to celebrate and welcome the 2021 New Year, which begins the next 20 years of the 21st Century! Christmas appeared to be coming a bit early in Marple Township this month when Santa Claus came into town for a business meeting with the founders of the new Marple Civic Association, which formed last month to further develop Marple Township hometown pride. While it was an honor for me to be asked to serve as an inaugural Board Member of Marple Civic (as the new organization is also becoming known), I know Marple’s own Holly Stupak, our Marple Friends & Neighbors Content Coordinator, was honored to interview the organization’s founders along with Santa Claus, who delivered Marple Civic’s first Christmas Tree with sage advice about logistics, planning and fundraising, which Marple Civic plans on using to beautify Marple Township and to support Marple families in need. (Read Holly Stupak’s interview with Santa and Marple Civic Association Founders on page 8.) If you love reading Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine in print and online at www. MarpleMag.com, and you love living in Marple Township, make it your New Year’s Resolution this year to invest your hometown pride as a Marple Civic committee volunteer. To learn how, visit the Marple Civic Association’s new website at www.MarpleCivic. org. Your hometown is calling for your support in 2021, and there are great things coming to Marple Township. Great things always happen with support of great people, like those business leaders who are advertising Sponsors of Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine and who make it possible for Marple hometown to be delivered to your door by mail every month without cost. And so, on behalf of all our advertising Sponsors, and our Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine staff, we wish everyone Happy Hanukkah, a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year 2021.

You Only Have to Brush the Ones You Want to Keep

A

s young children, we’re all taught how to brush our teeth. Most of us continue those same brushing techniques throughout our lives. Unfortunately, there’s a right and wrong way to brush our teeth, and most of us do it wrong. In 1940, a newly retired physician, Charles C. Bass, described and promoted “The Bass technique of toothbrushing.” After a long career researching and treating tropical diseases, Dr. Bass dedicated the next 35 years of his life studying the two main diseases of oral health: dental decay and gum disease. His contributions to oral health and hygiene were so significant that he is considered by many to be the “Father of Preventive Dentistry.” Dr. Bass realized that in order to maximize the removal of plaque while minimizing the trauma that causes gum recession, a gentle “Press, Wiggle, Sweep” action was needed. This brushing technique is known today as The Bass Method. WRONG: The Common “Scrub-a-Dub-Dub” Method 1. Place toothpaste on brush. 2. Scrub your teeth vigorously, back and forth, along the length of each arch for about 30 seconds. 3. Rinse and spit. Unfortunately, this age-old method tends to leave bacterial plaque in the crevices between the teeth and under the edge of the gum line. Most importantly, the force and direction of this technique causes long-term damage to the teeth and gums, resulting in recession and abrasion of the teeth and their root surfaces.

Steps 1-5 of the “Press-Wiggle-Sweep” Bass Method

RIGHT: The “Press-Wiggle-Sweep” Bass Method This technique requires approximately 2 minutes to complete. 1. Place the bristles of the toothbrush along the gum line at a 45-degree angle to the teeth. 2. Press the brush gently against the teeth so that you feel the bristles go between the teeth and slightly under the edge of the gum line. 3. Wiggle the brush back and forth in a “vibratory motion” without sliding the bristles across the surface of the teeth, followed by a gentle sweeping motion away from the gums. 4. Advance to the next two teeth, and repeat. 5. Move methodically around the mouth, two teeth at a time, until all the surfaces of each tooth are free of bacterial plaque. 6. Rinse and spit. The Bass method is one of the most effective and gentle techniques known today for removing plaque and preventing cavities and gum disease. The technique is non-traumatic, easy to master at any age, and if done correctly, it will help keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your life. M

The December Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Riley Hurda, a Senior at The Episcopal Academy! Riley received a Certificate of Achievement, and looks forward to enjoying her award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. Riley is “organized, reliable and kind, and is respected by her peers and teachers for her consistent and gracious interest in others.” Actively involved in her school’s Community Service Corps (CSC) program since 9th grade, Riley has consistently volunteered to help with many outreach programs including two that serve Philadelphia communities. She also initiated and has led a Pen Pal program with a school in north Philly, which has also benefited by receiving art supplies donated as a result of Riley’s leadership. And this is her second year serving on CSC’s Executive Leadership Board, which plans service programming for the school community. Also since 9th grade, Riley has served as a member of three Varsity sports teams: Water Polo, Swimming and Softball. This year, as Captain for the Varsity Swimming and Softball teams, she will plan and lead several team-bonding activities and events. At graduation, Riley will have received 12 well-deserved Varsity letters! As a Junior and Senior, Riley has worked a few days each week for Episcopal Academy Aquatic Club, teaching children ages 4-8 how to swim. She also serves on EA’s Key Club, which has given her many opportunities to serve as a “school ambassador” by helping with admissions at events and also serving on panel discussions for prospective parents and students. Riley also participates in her school’s Spanish Club and Model UN, and she is Co-President of Team Up: Let's Talk, a group that facilitates opportunities for teens and their parents to discuss difficult topics. Riley has applied to several colleges, and plans a career in Nursing, to combine her love of science and medicine with her steadfast interest in service to others. Congratulations again, Riley, from all your Friends & Neighbors in the Marple Newtown community! We wish you a wonderful Senior year full of many fond memories, and much success in college and beyond!

Bringing People Together Marple Friends & Neighbors

Bob’s Christmas List for Our Sponsors Bringing People Together Is a Gift

W

hat would you like for Christmas? That question is always uncomfortable for me. I suppose I enjoy giving gifts more than receiving them. I don’t ask that question either. I think of what someone would like and even if it costs a bit more or takes more time to shop, I make the effort. I suppose as they say, It’s the thought that counts, and thought takes effort. And time. That’s what counts in gift giving.

This month, I think about our Sponsors of Marple Friends & Neighbors. What would they like for Christmas? What would I like for them to receive, in gratitude for spending a portion of their limited marketing budgets on us, as residents of Marple Township, so this magazine can be Bringing People Together all year long in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com? Our Sponsors are on my Christmas List, and I am asking you to put them on yours too. Pick at least one. Find their ad in our magazine and make the effort, visit them, or call them to tell them: Thank You for making our hometown magazine possible. And consider, as your personal show of gratitude, gifting them with your business before the year ends. Buy an item or a gift card. Or tell them you’ll be contracting their services soon. Think how much businesses struggled this year — and still are struggling — due to COVID-19. Consider how their commitment as advertising Sponsors continued to bring our hometown magazine to your door, with cheerful faces and feel-good features every month, for free. Sure, remember your kids’ Teachers, your Letter Carrier, and your Trash Collectors for their faithful service all year. But this year, let’s also remember our hometown Sponsors. Pick a few Sponsors listed on the right, add them to your Christmas List and Shop Local for a Christmas gift this year for someone on your list. And do it with hometown pride that your purchase makes our hometown magazine possible. Stop By… And Make a Purchase! When they say Thank You for your business, tell our Sponsors: No, Thank You… for sponsoring our hometown. Add These Hometown Heroes to Your Christmas Shopping List This Year! M

Santa Visits the New Marple Civic Association Written by Holly Stupak Photos by Micduff Photography, www.Micduff.com

S

anta Claus is extra-busy this time of year, so what brought him to Marple so early this holiday season? “I was pleased to hear about the new Marple Civic Association,” said Santa. “Building a community through a civic association is a wonderful undertaking. And what I am most excited about is that I’ll have the opportunity to visit children in Broomall before Christmas, to spread holiday cheer!” The Marple Civic Association (MCA) was the idea of local business owners and close friends for 25 years Nick Reynolds and John McKenzie, who are the founders and now volunteers of the organization. “I was vacationing at the shore this summer and the idea came to me,” said Nick. “Looking around the downtown area there, I thought of some ideas that could be incorporated in Broomall. I talked to John and we agreed that starting a civic association would be a great way to bring people together to enhance our community.” Nick and John, co-owners of Splash Surf Club, Delco Steaks, and the new Marple Pub (opening soon), both grew up in Marple Newtown and consider themselves “lifers.” Nick lived in Newtown Square and attended St. Anastasia and then graduated from Marple Newtown High School. He and his wife Alana are raising their four children here in Broomall. John 8

grew up in Broomall, attended St. Pius X and graduated from Malvern Prep. He and his wife Jackie live in Broomall with their four boys. “We’re proud to live and own businesses here,” said John, “and we want to use our skills to address some of the community’s needs. The mission of the Association will be to keep Marple the great close-knit community it is, and to make it even better.” We asked Santa how the Marple Civic plans to kick off the holiday season. “I’ll be bringing back a Marple community tradition,” he said. “Just as in years past, I’ll be visiting neighborhoods on a fire truck. I know this is something families look forward to each year, and I do too!” Santa paused thoughtfully, and then added “A civic association really says to its residents ‘We care about our community.’ When members get together behind a vision for the area, big changes can happen to the look and feel of the area.” With the holidays approaching, Nick and John agreed that a great way to start the season and introduce the new Marple Civic Association would be to have Santa do it. “Seeing Santa come through our neighborhoods has always been a highlight of the holiday season,” said Nick. “We were able to purchase a fire truck so that we can keep this tradition alive in Broomall!”

Marple Civic plans to hold meetings starting in the new year at The American Legion Post 805 building at 2340 West Chester Pike. “The building was up for rent,” said Nick, “and because we’re a nonprofit organization, we were a great fit for them. The meetings will provide great opportunities to discuss local issues and work toward common goals.” “To be in this position, is an honor, to say the least. I love this place. Resident Feature place to live and raise a family. I am happy to bring my experience of nonprofit work from Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association and apply it to serve this community,” said MCA Executive Director, Steve Reynolds. “As a Broomall resident, I think the MCA is going to be a great way to get people excited about our town!”said Board Secretary and Treasurer, Ken Klein, Vice President of Republic Bank. “And when Nick told me about the fire truck, that really sealed the deal!” he joked. One of the first initiatives the Marple Civic hopes to implement is to improve the overall appearance of the businesses along West Chester Pike. “We’d love to add flowers along the median and trees and Holiday lights outside the businesses along this strip,” said John McKenzie. “We’d also like to create more of a unified look for the businesses along this area. Other nearby towns like Paoli have done something similar, and it really enhanced the area. We’d love to give Broomall the same type of downtown feel that you get in places like Media or Wayne,” Nick Reynolds added. Nick said that they want as many local businesses involved as possible. “It would be a great benefit to the businesses here, especially new businesses, if Broomall is in the best shape it can be,” he said. Our own Bob Blaisse, Publisher of Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine, is also excited about the new Marple Civic Association. “MCA brings a new energy to the mission it shares with our magazine: Bringing People Together! Of course we want to support this new movement of Marple residents, to increase hometown pride with hometown activities.” When it comes to events and fundraising, Marple Civic already has some ideas in the works. “There will be opportunities to volunteer for food and toy drives this holiday season,” they said. “We are also looking to hold a Casino Night and a Black Tie Gala this summer and family friendly events such as community days and fun fairs.” “We’ve received a positive response on social media about the MCA,” John added. “Residents and business owners are excited about this opportunity to preserve and enhance the

Broomall community. By bringing our abilities and passions together, we can affect real change.” To learn more about the new Marple Civic Association and for updates, information about initiatives and how to become a member or to offer suggestions, visit www.MarpleCivic.org and their Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/MarpleCivic). “Volunteering your time is a great way to give back to the community, meet new friends, and have some fun!” Santa said. “There are many ways to join the Marple Civic Association and support its mission. Contact them to find out more about volunteer opportunities, fundraising events, and ways that you can get their message to your friends and family.” And Santa had one more message to the community: “Look for me in my fire truck visiting your neighborhood soon! Mrs. Claus and I wish the new MCA and everyone in Broomall a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2021! Oh, and THANK YOU to Broomall resident Michael Duff, owner of Micduff Film, Photography & Screenwriting (www.Micduff.com), for these great photos here!” Do you know a Broomall Resident or Family who should become known by our community? Thinking of Purchasing a New Roof?

W

hen it’s time to replace your roof, do some research and hire a credentialed and seasoned company. Your roof is arguably the most important part of your home!

Gather referrals and recommendations from various sources. But before you call any of them, look a little deeper into each one. Ask neighbors and local friends if they’ve had a recent new-roof experience, how that went and if they’d recommend using that same company. Next, narrow it down to three companies, ideally all of which have been in business for 10+ years. In the business world, longevity is typically an indication of consistent customer satisfaction and reasonable prices. Get and compare estimates from those three companies. Each estimate’s total cost should be within 10-15% of the others. If there’s quite a discrepancy, it’s likely due to a major factor such as a different scope of work, high overhead, no insurance and/or no certifications. Comparing each estimate’s scope of work is one of the most important things a homeowner can do! Everything about the roofing project should be specified, including the number of shingle layers to be removed, type of plywood to be used (if applicable), and other materials such as drip edge metal, underlayment, ice/water shield, shingles, ridge vent, and hip/ridge shingles.

3. Ask about a manufacturer’s warranty option for materials and labor. Sometimes such extended warranties are cost prohibitive, but following warranty specifications ensures that the roof is installed correctly and meets current code requirements. (The roof should be installed the same way regardless of whether or not you purchase an extended warranty.) 4. Ask about how the project will be managed (scheduling, job duration, dumpster and material deliveries). Also discuss your expectations that the level of interest and responsiveness of the roofing company you select will remain consistent throughout the whole process. 5. Trust your gut and hire the roofing company that you feel meets all your criteria, especially reputation, professionalism and warranty. When it comes to this major investment in your home, price should not be the #1 or only factor to consider. M

Here’s a checklist to help you make a well-informed decision: 1. While reviewing each estimate, ask plenty of questions about the ventilation, insulation, plywood/decking quality, flashing and warranty. Ask if anything stands out to the company as a cause for concern. (If there is, they should find and fix it!) 2. Ask how long the company has been installing roofs (or siding, gutters, etc.) A company that has weathered economic ups and downs says a LOT about how well it’s funded and managed. YOUR new roof’s warranty may depend on THEM staying in business!

Business Profile

A Family-Owned Business that Puts YOUR Family First Written by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Jack Crowley, Jr. Jack Crowley, Jr., Owner

J

ack Crowley, Jr., Owner of C&J Automotive Specialists (www.CandJAutoRepair.com) in Newtown Square, has fond memories of growing up in the auto service business. His father, Jack Crowley Sr., opened C&J Automotive Specialists in Berwyn, PA in 1988. Over the past 32 years, Jack Jr. and his dad have made a great team in the industry. “We are a tight-knit family,” said Jack Jr. “As kids, my sister Katelyn and I would be in the Pack-n-Play in the auto shop while my parents were working there. And as we got older, we loved roller skating there. We really grew up in that shop!” Shortly after college, Jack Jr. worked with his dad to co-open their second location on Newtown Street Rd. in Newtown Square. In 2019, Jack Jr. bought both businesses from his dad, who has stayed on as a consultant. Together they look forward to expanding and opening a third location. The philosophy at C&J is something Jack learned from his dad, which became a tagline for their auto shop: Let Our Family Put Your Family First. Growing up, Jack Jr. and his family lived in Malvern, close to the auto shop. After he graduated from Conestoga High School, knowing he would likely be running his dad’s business someday, he studied Business Management and Geographical Information Systems at West Chester University. The courses he took there really helped prepare him for running an auto service business. But it was his dad’s influence that showed him how to be a successful business owner. “My dad always taught me to be appreciative, truthful and grateful,” said Jack, “and that’s how I treat everyone.”

Jack and his staff at C&J Newtown Square are proud to serve repeat customers who have been with them since his dad opened up the first location. “We have some people who were my father’s customers, including one who hit the 300,000mile mark on her car,” he said. “And we’re now seeing some of C&J’s original customers' sons and daughters.” C&J Automotive Specialists really pride themselves on being like your family’s mechanic while still being able to provide value and an industry-leading warranty. “When we look at your car, we’ll give you a list of what we’ve noticed, what you need to do now and what you need to do down the road,” explained Jack. “But we are not pushy. There’s nothing wrong with customers taking time to think about the suggestions.” C&J recently purchased a digital repair system that they’ll be onboarding in January. “This auto repair software gives us the ability to show and educate customers on what we’ve found, what the repair is, and why it’s so important,” explained Jack. “I know our customers will appreciate the transparency and additional education that not only helps them become a more informed car owner, but builds trust and a great relationship between us.” Not only does C&J Automotive Specialists put their customers first, that’s how they also treat their employees. “Our goal is to hire young, talented people and see that they keep moving up,” Jack said. “We want them to have room to grow and hopefully be a partner in one of our shops in the future.” “Our business is truly a family affair!” added Marketing Director, Leah Grubb. When he’s not working in one of the auto repair shops, Jack Jr. can be found spending time with his family, especially quality time with his dad. “Growing up, we restored a ‘69 Chevelle and a ‘68 Corvette. We really enjoy each other’s company. Outside of business, we go fishing and golfing together on the weekends.” Whether it’s a yearly PA State Inspection, a routine oil change, new tires or other vehicle needs, visit C&J Automotive Specialists and you can be assured that Jack and his team will Put Your Family First! As a local business owner, Jack enjoys being part of the Marple Newtown community. He supports a local family by being a sponsor for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Funding, and also donates to the local police and fire departments. Although he grew up in Malvern, he has another connection to the Marple Newtown area: As a young boy, he played football for the St. Anastasia Spartans.

Marple Township Ambulance Corps’ New Home Handling Today’s Demands and Future EMS Needs Written by Holly Stupak

In September, the Marple Township Ambulance Corps (MTAC) moved into its brand-new, bigger, state-of-the-art headquarters on Malin Rd, across from the Broomall Firehouse. Designed by Bernardon, the same architecture firm that designed the new Broomall firehouse, the new MTAC facility can accommodate more emergency vehicles and helps the MTAC be prepared to handle today’s demands as well as future needs. Since the MTAC was formed in 1949, they’ve had four locations. They were first headquartered on West Chester Pike, in the area where John’s Auto Body is now, and the first ambulance was stored in a building owned by George Parker, Sr., one of MTAC’s founding members. In 1960, to keep up with the community’s growing need for emergency service, they moved to the building on Sproul Rd at Harding Rd. In the 1980s, that building was structurally reinforced to accommodate larger and heavier vehicles, and then it underwent structural changes again in 1995. As Marple Township’s population grew, so did the need for storage of medical supplies, ambulances, rescue vehicles, and space to train Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). “We’ve been wanting to move to the Malin Rd location for 20 years,” said Andrew Tucker, Deputy Chief of Operations. “Thanks to an additional grant from the state, we were able to make it happen this year. Construction was delayed a bit due to the pandemic, but it was finally ready for us to move into in September. We are looking forward to hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Spring 2021.” Under the leadership of MTAC Board President Thomas Gorski and Chief of Operations William Downey, the MTAC has 80% career paramedics/EMTs and 20% volunteers. They are a unique corps because even though they work and train with volunteers of the Broomall Fire

Company, they’re one of the two volunteer ambulance associations in the county not affiliated with a fire company. Shortly after they moved to their new facility, the MTAC acquired NARC-ID, a cutting-edge portable narcotic safe system that helps EMTs keep safe and secure the medications that they carry for pain or sedation. “This new tool will help keep secure Class 2, 3 and 4 medications that are stocked in both the building and in the ambulances,” said Andrew. “We’re thankful to State Rep. Jen O’Mara and the District Attorney’s office, whose grant money allowed us to make this purchase,” Andrew added. The MTAC was also one of several local fire and EMS organizations who received state funding through Act 26. The $15,048 grant they received in October can be used for operational and equipment expenses to help offset the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Since April, we’ve responded to over 300 calls from patients with COVID-related symptoms, and about 62% have been positive virus cases.

The five nursing homes in our area have been hit hard with the virus and have kept us very busy,” said Andrew. “The grant we received will really help to offset our rising costs due to the pandemic.” With moving to the new facility, getting underway using NARCID, and COVID-19 related emergency calls, it’s been a busy fall for the MTAC. In October, the new facility was also used as a set for the pilot of a new TV series, The Paramedic Angel (theparamedicangel on Facebook). The series’ Writer and Director, Chuck Rayner, a Delaware County native, a former paramedic and one of Andrew Tucker’s close friends, will pitch the pilot to several different networks. Chuck enlisted the help of his friend Andrew to serve as a consultant to the cast and crew. The actors are getting to use the MTAC offices, uniforms and vehicles, and have been able to go with medics on ride-alongs. Chuck says he found his calling after an accident on the job left him unable to continue being a paramedic. “After my accident, I was determined to get myself in shape and find a new purpose. I discovered acting and directing, and now I’m combining my experience as an EMT into my new career,” he said. “I think viewers will find the show inspiring, and we’ve been blessed that the Marple Township Ambulance Corps allowed us to use their new facility.” Whether they’re career or volunteer paramedics/EMTs, we thank our own paramedic angels here in Marple for being ready to respond to our friends and neighbors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The MTAC offers a subscription program so

that you do not suffer any out-of-pocket expenses if you need their emergency services. If you are a contributing member of the MTAC subscription program, then after your insurance carrier has been billed or any appeals have been processed, the remaining balance of your bill is written off. Because Marple Township Ambulance Corps is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, subscriptions are tax deductible. Pre-Need Funeral Insurance Gives Families Peace of Mind

A

lthough your funeral may be years or decades away, getting pre-need insurance (aka pre-planning) is one of the most loving, considerate gifts you can give to your loved ones. When you plan your own service or cremation, it removes from them the worry and burden of funeral costs for those left behind. Instead, your loved ones can focus on the memories and time spent with you.

3. You control funeral costs by setting a budget and sticking to it.

Here are the top five reasons people choose pre-need insurance:

In Pennsylvania, funeral homes cannot keep a family’s prepayment “in house,” in case something would happen and the funeral service went out of business. That’s why pre-arranged funerals and cremations are funded with funeral insurance and the value of the funeral insurance policy is equivalent to the amount of the arrangement that is selected.

1. When a person makes their own arrangements, they know that their expressed wishes will be carried out and honored the way they intended. 2. Pre-need insurance eliminates an emotional and financial burden for your loved ones.

4. You’ll have time to decide what products and services are most important to you and avoid having your loved ones make emotional purchases. 5. If it’s prepaid, funeral homes offer locked-in prices through a pre-planning funding partner.

In the past, many people put money away in a bank’s reserve account. Nowadays, many financial institutions do not offer such accounts anymore, and it makes more sense to deal directly with a funeral home. You can even choose from different payment options such as choosing to pay in a single payment or on a payment plan. And no matter how much time passes, the costs are locked in, guaranteed and inflation-proof. It’s important to note that funeral homes are unable to guarantee the prices for those providing other parts of the funeral or cremation services such as church and clergy fees, crematory charges, newspaper obituary notices, certified copies of the death certificate, flowers, funeral lunches, etc. The present-day prices of those items can be incorporated into the pre-need insurance, with the understanding that those costs will be applied as a “credit” toward the charges at the time of death. If you’re considering planning for your funeral ahead of time, you’re making a smart choice because doing so can save your family both money and decision-making during an emotionally difficult time. Publisher’s Note: Thanks to Bob Ash for his assistance to Rob D’Anjolell and to DANJOLELL Memorial Homes for guiding us and our families as to how we can let our loved ones know we have already chosen our “Expert” funeral provider and made all funeral arrangements. 2020 Year-End Tax-Saving Opportunities for Individuals and Businesses

F

or 2020 only, you can deduct contributions to most charities equal to 100% of your income but only if you contribute cash. Normally, the maximum deduction is limited to 60%, so if you’re considering a large one-time contribution, 2020 may be the year to do that. The rules are complicated, and not all charities qualify, so discuss this with your tax advisor. If you are at least age 70½, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) up to $100,000 from a traditional IRA to a charity. Unlike normal IRA distributions, a QCD is not taxable to the IRA owner. The maximum contribution to qualified retirement plans for 2020 is $19,500 for 401(k), 403(b) and 457 plans, plus an extra $6,500 catch-up contribution if you are at least age 50. For SIMPLE Plans, the max contribution is $13,500 plus an extra $3,500 catch-up. And for a traditional IRA, the max contribution is $6,000 plus an extra $1,000 catch-up. Contributions to retirement plans and IRAs are subject to phase-outs based on your income. Other complicated limitations may apply. Your tax advisor can clarify and guide you on this. Starting in 2020, traditional IRA owners can make contributions regardless of their age. The previous maximum age for contributions was 70½. Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) to qualified retirement plan participants and traditional IRA owners must begin at age 72. The good news is that for 2020, all RMDs are waived. Also in 2020, the normal 10% penalty for distributions from retirement plans and IRAs before you are 59½ is waived for up to $100,000 of coronavirus-related distributions. The income tax on these distributions can be spread over three years.

Get Your Car Prepared for Winter!

Amounts re-contributed within three years will not be taxable. These rules and definitions are very complicated, and should definitely be discussed with your tax advisor. If you have a business loss in 2018, 2019 or 2020 from a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC or S Corporation, you may be able to receive cash refunds by carrying the loss back five years. Under prior law, loss carrybacks were prohibited, which meant you could only receive tax relief in the future, if ever. If you had a business loss in 2019, you should speak to your tax advisor about filing IRS Form 1045 by December 31, to receive a “Quick Refund” of taxes paid in 2014 through 2018. A qualified business income (QBI) deduction of 20% is allowed for income from a sole proprietorship, partnership, S Corporation and LLC. For example, a business reports $100,00 of income after expenses but only pays tax on $80,000 after the QBI deduction. Your tax advisor can explain options and recommended actions based on your specific situation. M Nationally Recognized Accounting & Tax Management Expert HEADQUARTERED IN OUR HOMETOWN!

List for Santa, List for Life: Broomall Author T.E. Corner’s Books Teach Life-Learned Lessons Written by Holly Stupak / Photos courtesy of Tom Corner

W

hat if when you wrote your first Christmas list, you also realized that list could include goals for your hopes and dreams, too? That is the idea Tom (“T.E.”) Corner, a father of three young girls, had when he wrote his first book, List for Santa, List for Life. In that book, the main character, Kylie, is a child writing her first list for Santa. Like most children, Kylie knows just what she wants for herself and for others. But instead of just listing what she wants for Christmas, she decides to list her goals as well. The book illustrates how Kylie’s Christmas became much more meaningful when she wrote a list for not only what she hoped for but a whole lot more. A new softball bat would mean a winning homerun for the team. And a new oven mitt for her mom would be fun times they would share in the kitchen, baking cookies. If you ask Tom how long it took to write List for Santa, List for Life, he’ll tell you “about 45 years.” In reality, the writing and publishing process only took about two years. But for Tom, it was a long time in the making. Tom said the idea came to him when his 1st-grade daughter was working on her Christmas list. It was around the same time that he was doing his annual business plan for his job as a sales representative. “I thought to myself, how many times have I set goals or made a plan, but not followed through?” explained Tom. “Many times, business plans sit in a drawer until the following year, and the goals are not met.”

Author T.E. Corner

While sitting at a Starbucks, getting work done, Tom said he realized his idea would make a great children’s book. “I really wanted to teach children the importance of writing down and maintaining their own set of goals and desires, to help them receive the wonderful things this life has to offer,” said Tom. Tom followed up his first book with two others that feature the same character, Kylie: Positive Thoughts, Positive Life! and Life Is Fine, When You’re Aligned. Continuing the goal-setting theme, Positive Thoughts, Positive Life! encourages children to keep a List for Life! inter weather and the stress of a pandemic can stress out not only our mind, health and body, but also our hair. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, it’s important to not forget about taking care of ourselves and, of course, our hair. With trying to get those last-minute gifts and feast ingredients together, let’s focus on an easy and versatile color and style, to keep your hair healthy and vibrant. Get ready for 2021 with an easy upkeep color service! A color melt, blonding, ombre or balayage can keep your hair looking lived in and lustrous for several months, which during a pandemic is a great option to help prevent having to come to the salon every month for a touch up. But if you’re looking for a different or more frequent service, you’ll want to ensure the salon is following all CDC and State Board of Cosmetology restrictions and guidelines, to protect you during the pandemic while allowing you to enjoy the day of pampering you may need. Some of those restrictions and guidelines include all clients having their temperature taken upon arrival; face masks are mandatory for all; hands must be washed upon entry; and clients waiting in their car for their appointment instead of in the salon’s waiting area. To create a safe and healthy environment for all, some salons are doing MORE than the minimum required: For example, their employees are working split shifts (half work morning and early afternoon; the other half work late afternoon and evening).

provides the perfect Hydrating Mask to keep your hair always looking its best. Try to wash your hair as little as possible throughout the week. (Yes, that may sound gross, but trust us on this one.) Over-washing your hair, especially in dry winter months, will cause it to dry out more quickly. That causes a ripple effect, and you’ll need to get color and trims more frequently. Also, try using as little hot water on your hair as possible. Cold or warm water gives the hair a shine and does not strip hair color. It also closes your pores and cuticles, to lock in the moisture we’re striving for.

After your color service is complete, there are a few simple tips to keep your hair style vibrant and pandemic schedule friendly. Start with a bi-weekly conditioning treatment. Morrocain Oil

The pandemic has forced ALL industries to change and evolve, and the hair industry has new healthy hair tips, colors, and tricks to prepare you for whatever 2021 may bring. M

For wedding hair and makeup, the best salons are also following all CDC guidelines while allowing stylists opportunities to be creative and showcase their unique styling and makeup skills.

How Senior Communities Are Keeping Up with the Changing Times Many senior living communities are undergoing a complete transformation to accommodate the changing tastes and needs of the Baby Boomer generation and to stay current. Gone are the institutionalized facilities of many decades ago, replaced by spacious suites and common spaces, engaging activities and social programming to address many varied interest areas, and even technology centers for staying connected to friends and family. An added and critical challenge for senior communities this year has been to ensure residents are safe during the COVID19 pandemic. These communities are working hard to make sure their residents are being cared for safely while also ensuring they continue to enjoy their retirement years. Assisted Living and Personal Care communities in Pennsylvania have revolutionized the way they care for their residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure the safety of their residents and staff (by following all CDC guidelines and recommendations) while still allowing residents to have a high quality of life and the ability to engage with their friends and family. Numerous communities are now allowing visits by family and friends, and most are offering in-person and/or virtual tours for seniors looking to transition to a new home. It is also comforting to know that many communities have been COVID-free since the beginning of the pandemic. Families searching to move their loved one into a community will be pleased to know that safety precautions are being taken very seriously. When families tour a senior living community, they are still required to wear PPE or personal protective equipment. If you choose to visit a loved one, all guests and visitors are required to socially distance while wearing face masks. Some communities are even allowing guests to visit the resident apartments. This allows everyone to stay safe while helping improve the social and emotional wellness of residents and families who can see their loved ones.

Choosing the correct senior living community for yourself or loved one can be challenging given the sheer number of options in the immediate area. Professionals are available to help explain the options that would be best suited for yourself or your loved one based on your unique needs. It is especially important to work with someone who knows how the communities are actively adjusting their safety protocols and resident engagement based on the most up-to-date CDC information and state regulations. History Spotlight The 4th-century Saint Nicholas

We Need a Little Christmas! Written by Doug Humes Photos are from public domain

E

nglish-speaking residents have been celebrating Christmas in Marple since its founding in 1681. But those early settlers would not recognize the holiday we celebrate today. In fact, early 18th-century Quakers treated the day much like every other day except the Sabbath. A 1749 visitor noted: The Quakers did not regard this day any more remarkable than other days. Stores were open, and anyone might sell or purchase what he wanted. …There was no more baking of bread for the Christmas festival than for other days; and no Christmas porridge on Christmas Eve! One did not seem to know what it meant to wish anyone a Merry Christmas. Oddly enough, part of our Christmas tradition grew out of the generosity of a rich man in 4th-century Turkey. Hearing that a certain single woman could not attract suitable marriage prospects because she had no dowry to offer, the man secretly dropped a bag of gold down the family chimney one night, and the bag got caught in a stocking that had been hung up to dry in the fireplace. Repeated gifts from this man led to his recognition as a saint, St. Nicholas.

Over the years, strands of the Greek Saint Nicholas, the English Father Christmas, and the Dutch Sinterklaas were woven together. In 1823, the poet Clement Clarke Moore gave us the timeless story A Visit from St. Nicholas, and a whole host of Christmas icons: Santa, the airborne sleigh, the flying reindeer, landing on the roof on Christmas Eve, dropping down

Today’s celebrations of Christmas would be unrecognizable to the 18th-century citizens – both the religious celebration with its pageantry and music, and the secular celebration that unites us in our suspension of disbelief on Christmas Eve, as we wait for that jolly old elf to bring presents to the children of the world. And in this trying year of 2020, Lord knows we need a little Christmas! the chimney with a sack of toys, leaving them for each child, stuffing the stockings hanging by the chimney, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. In the 1860s, American illustrator Thomas Nast put a face to the man, and his version has become the accepted depiction of our American Santa Claus. A final piece was added in 1866, with a Nast Christmas image showing a village called “Santa Claussville, N.P.” The N.P.? North Pole!
