I’m grateful too for business owners who have served as advertising Sponsors of Marple Township residents this year. They make our magazine possible to be designed, printed, and mailed for free to residents and to be online at www.MarpleMag.com. This month we welcome a Legend as our newest Sponsor: David Linn Cook, the Marple resident who truly is legendary for his expertise in home weatherization and remediation of wet basements. Dave and his partner, Julius Pucala, of Weatherproofing Plus, Inc., save homeowners from their most worrisome concerns. I’m honored that Dave Cook has agreed to serve as an Expert Contributor of Waterproofing & Weatherization feature articles you’ll be seeing on these pages in coming months. For now, see if you recognize the legend by his photo within the Weatherproofing Plus ad on page 9. I also want to thank our Sponsor Sproul Lanes for their upgraded sponsorship of Marple Township residents with our new Student of the Month award, which starts with Archbishop Carroll High School Senior Michael Volpe. (See page 5, to read about Mike Volpe and how to nominate your student as our next Student of the Month. Congratulations, Michael! What a great year coming to a close. Thank you everyone for all your support of Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Dear Residents, Crisp fall days, football games, Thanksgiving feasts — all signs that “the Holidays” are coming, ready or not! Gift lists, shopping, wrapping, decorating, parties and gatherings with family and friends fill our days and nights with extra laughter, surprises and childlike wonder. Our Calendar (pages 20 - 21) includes some events that may help you start some new family traditions. This month, we’re delighted to introduce you to the Donnelly Family. Their outlook on life helps this family turn lemons into lemonade all year long. Our Business Profile is about Fritsch’s Liberty Service Center, which has been Marple Newtown’s auto repair masters for four generations. Bill Fritsch’s story of how this business has adjusted to auto industry changes over 70 years is fascinating!

Bringing People Together for Decades, Now Our Student of the Month Sponsor

N

early everyone likes to bowl, if not regularly for sport, at least occasionally for fun and recreation. And whether we’re frequently or rarely in a bowling mood, we know exactly where to go with friends or family. Of course, it’s the iconic Sproul Lanes! If you grew up going to school in Marple Newtown, you likely were also schooled in how to bowl by visiting Sproul Lanes, which has been Bringing People Together for fun and sport at the Grand Shopping Plaza, just over the border of Marple Township in nearby Springfield, since 1961! Founded and constructed by three Abbonizio brothers, Tom, Woody and Dan, Sproul Lanes has since been remodeled several times by two generations of the Abbonizio family, which has faithfully guarded this treasured recreation destination, the largest Bowling Center in Delaware County. Recognizing the longtime commitment the Abbonizio family and Sproul Lanes have made to the Marple Newtown community as a leading local business for nearly 60 years, and particularly to Marple residents as a Sponsor of Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine, I asked Sproul Lanes Managing Director, Steve Abbonizio, and Manager, Fred Conaway, if they would increase their sponsorship of Marple residents each month by honoring a middle school or high school student.

Sproul Lanes has graciously agreed to serve as Sponsor for a new student recognition award we will now call: The Sproul Lanes Student of The Month Beginning this month, and each month that follows, Marple Friends & Neighbors will profile a middle school or high school student named as The Sproul Lanes Student of the Month, with a feature article about the student’s achievements to introduce the student to readers.

The Sproul Lanes Student of the Month must reside within the borders of the Marple Newtown School District but can attend any middle school or high school inside or outside the district. Students are encouraged to nominate themselves as a Student of the Month. Parents, relatives, friends and teachers of students are also encouraged to nominate a deserving student. To nominate a Student of the Month: Send a 200-word email to SOTM@SproulLanes.com, to share how you believe a student has demonstrated excellence in friendship to their fellow students or service to their school or local community. Note: Excellence in academics or athletics can be a consideration but is not required to be named Student of the Month. Thanks to our Sponsor, Sproul Lanes, our first Student of the Month for December 2019 is Broomall resident Michael Volpe, a Senior at Archbishop Carroll High School. Congratulations, Mike! Enjoy the Pizza Bowl event that will now be held in your honor for you and your friends, courtesy of Sproul Lanes. M

We’re pleased to announce that the December Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Archbishop John Carroll High School Senior Mike Volpe! To celebrate this recognition, Mike received a Certificate of Achievement and a gift certificate for a “Pizza Bowl” party from Sproul Lanes, our new Sponsor of this award program. Mike is very deserving of this award: He’s a member of the National Honor Society, the Community Service Corps (CSC), Tri-M (the Music Honor Society; he’s Vice-President), and his school’s TV crew and baseball team. He’s also in Carroll’s Pep Band, Pit Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble, playing drums and all percussion instruments, which he has played since joining St. Anastasia’s school band in 5th grade. He has also played baseball since age 5, in Marple Township’s Little League program, then the Babe Ruth and Legion Ball leagues. And he’s been on Carroll’s baseball team every year, and has umpired for MTLL's summer tournament teams. Mike makes service a priority: He was an altar server at his church, and in high school, has participated in CSC events such as the annual MLK Day of Service and a summer trip with classmates to do home-remodeling for needy people in an out-of-state community. Michael plans on studying Statistics and Data Analytics in college. He’s been accepted into the University of Pittsburgh’s Statistics program, and awaits decisions from several other schools including Penn State. Thanks, Mike, for your service to so many communities, and Congratulations on this award and for your many accomplishments!

HEALTHY SNACKS

Marple Dental, Inc.

for Healthy Smiles

A

s parents, we teach our kids the basic skills of dental hygiene: brushing twice a day and flossing once daily. But great dental care for kids goes beyond that. The secret to healthy teeth might just be in your child’s lunch box.

There are many tasty snacks that will satisfy hungry kids while also promoting healthy teeth. Here are some tooth-friendly snacks and also ones that can cause dental problems. Fresh Fruit: Apples, Sliced Melon, Fresh Berries Chewing on apples and high-fiber fruits can scrub away bacterial plaque. As a bonus, fruit is full of vitamins and an easy, nutritious snack. Celery and Carrots These crunchy vegetables contain a lot of water and fiber, which balance the sugars and help clean teeth. These veggies also require a lot of chewing, which can scrub tooth surfaces. Dairy Milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in calcium, casein, and phosphorus, which can protect tooth enamel. Milk products can effectively neutralize the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. Nuts and Seeds Nuts have dental benefits because most contain vitamin D and calcium. The crunch in your mouth stimulates saliva production and cleans your teeth.

For picky eaters, mixing snacks may improve acceptance: • Add a favorite dip to crunchy veggies. • Spread cream cheese or peanut butter on celery sticks. • Top apple slices with thinly sliced cheddar cheese. • Add fresh berries to low-fat yogurt. Avoid Soda and Starchy Foods Mouth bacteria feed on sugar and starch, turning them into acid, which destroys tooth enamel and causes decay. Acids and sugar in carbonated soft drinks combine to cause rapid tooth damage. Sweet and starchy foods like baked goods, and snacks like chips and pretzels also turn to acid, with the same damaging effects. Reduce or Avoid Some Citrus Fruit and Juices Most citrus fruits contain Vitamin C and nutrients, an essential part of a healthy diet. But grapefruit and lemons are highly acidic and can erode tooth enamel over time. Say No to Chewy Candies and Dried Fruit Taffy and caramels that stick to teeth are the most damaging and can dissolve tooth enamel. Many dried fruits are also sticky and contain high concentrations of sugar. Wise food choices should be part of your child’s daily dental care. That, along with a balanced diet, flossing daily, brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, and regular dental checkups will reduce the risk of cavities. Then rest assured you’ve done your very best to take care of those little smiles that you love so much! M

Mike, Matt, Allison and Deb Donnelly

uring a recent “pit stop” in between their comings and goings, the Donnellys graciously shared with us the then-and-now details of their lives. These fun-loving folks were a delight to get acquainted with! Mike Donnelly grew up with his parents and three younger brothers in Springfield. He attended St. Francis of Assisi parish school, and then Archmere Academy. Mike earned a B.S. in Secondary Education from Villanova, and a Master’s degree in Instructional Leadership from Penn State. For 23 years, he has taught 7th-graders at Phoenixville Middle School: Math for 16 years, and Public Speaking for the last 7 years. Deb Donnelly grew up in Gaithersburg, MD with her parents and older sister. After high school there, she moved to Media and started taking courses full-time at Penn State Brandywine while she also worked full-time as Manager of a store in the Springfield Mall. In 1995, when Deb was interviewing to hire 8

an all-new staff for the store’s Christmas season, she interviewed and hired Mike. (Deb and Mike laughed as she said “And I’m still his boss!”) By December 1999, their romance was blossoming. Deb then graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing, and started working for a Bala Cynwyd investment firm where she has enjoyed working ever since. Mike and Deb got engaged that same month, and in December 2000, they got married at Villanova University’s Chapel. Eight years and two kids later, when the Donnelly Family had outgrown their home in King of Prussia and they looked for a larger home near Mike’s mom in Springfield, they were thrilled to find their current home in Broomall. The pool in the backyard and Mike’s summers off from teaching allow for lots of fun when their kids invite friends over to cool off on hot summer days.

Mike and Deb’s oldest, their daughter Allison, attended Worrall Elementary School and Paxon Hollow Middle School. She’s now a 9th-grader at Marple Newtown High School. Until this school year, she was an active Girl Scout in a troop Deb led for many years. Allison participates on her school’s and community’s basketball, softball and field hockey teams, and has even made several all-star teams. Her favorite school team sport is field hockey because it gives her so many opportunities to bond with her teammates. She also sings in the MNHS Chorus, and looks forward to the fun that group will have on their upcoming trip to Disney World. Allison is considering a career as a Pediatric Nurse because she loves being around and helping kids.

Matt and Allison Donnelly

Deb and Mike’s son Matt also attended Worrall Elementary School, and is now in 7th grade at Paxon Hollow. He’s on a Sproul Lanes summer youth bowling team with Allison and their friends from another Marple family. Matt’s also on community baseball and basketball teams, and on his school’s soccer team. His favorite sport is soccer, and his skill level qualified him to play on a soccer travel team this year. He’s looking forward to his first season playing indoor travel soccer this winter. Matt played trumpet in school bands for three years, and was selected to play with students from other local schools in the PA Music Educators Association (PMEA) band. Broomall has proven to be the perfect community for The Donnellys. “We’re very happy with our home, the Marple Newtown Schools, and the many youth sports and other programs and activities for our kids. Everyone is very friendly!” raved Mike. For many years, he has enjoyed volunteering to coach youth baseball (MTLL), softball (NSPL), basketball (MNBA) and soccer (MNSA) teams Allison and Matt have been on. As their father, Mike is grateful for the many hours they’ve spent together. And as an educator who’s seen first-hand that kids who play team sports do better in school, he’s grateful that Marple Township provides this excellent way for parents to get involved with their kids, get to know their kids’ friends on those teams, and meet other parents who share similar parenting values. Since Mike was a kid, he’s been in the annual Spring musical put on by the St. Francis Players. That parish ministry for adults and children has fostered fellowship and community involvement in theatre and the fine arts since 1960. Mike has served as SFP President for over 15 years. He introduced Deb to this theatrical ministry back in 2000, and together they introduced Allison and Matt at an early age to the fun and team effort involved in those musical productions. “For several continued on page 10

“ ” If things don’t work out as planned, at least you have a good story!

In Deb’s spare time, she enjoys working out at home, taking local exercise classes, and walking with Mike in their hilly Marple neighborhood. Mike bowls Thursday nights at Sproul Lanes in a men’s league. He also volunteers as the “Bingo Caller” at Worrall PTO fundraisers. And several times every summer, he organizes Marple, Springfield and family group nights to the Phillies. Deb, Matt, Allison and Mike Donnelly, jumping for Joy in this Christmas season!

months each year, we get to spend a lot of quality time together. We all look forward to it!” Deb said. Her parents, who live in Plymouth Meeting, enjoy coming to see the shows. Mike and Deb have invited several Marple families to join the Players group, making their Broomall-Springfield connection even stronger. The Donnellys also enjoy family vacations, and have fond memories of their several trips to Disney World and a trip to Disneyland in California. They’ve also had fun vacationing a few times in the Outer Banks with several Marple families. Mike’s three brothers still live near enough to enjoy their Phillies season tickets and frequent get-togethers at a family-shared house in Ocean City, NJ. Those gatherings are always lots of fun for Allison, Matt and their six Donnelly cousins.

ouse! Love Your H

The Donnellys have all learned that teaching, theatre performances, and sports teams all have one thing in common: There’s no PAUSE button; the “show” must go on. These experiences led them to adopt and share this positive perspective about life: If things don’t work out as planned, at least you have a good story! A perfect example is how their planned one-hour family canoes and kayaks ride at the Delaware Water Gap in the Poconos turned into a rather miserable and even a bit scary four-hour series of unexpected delays. They all scrambled after one of their kayaks overturned, and they ended up with three of them in Mike’s canoe and Deb towing a kayak behind the one she was paddling. And they hadn’t even reached the halfway point! The Donnellys’ laughter as they now tell that (mis)adventure story shows just how adventuresome and resilient they all are. Perhaps their courage and ability to accept whatever happens knowing they did their best comes from years of performing on stage, teaching and coaching kids, and lots of event planning. One thing’s for sure: The Donnellys feel very blessed by their busy Broomall and Marple community life. M

Year-End Giving Helps All Year Written by Bob Blaisse Photos courtesy of The Spayed Club Clinic

A

s 2019 comes to a close, this annual gift-giving season is an extra-festive opportunity to show extra appreciation for family, friends and community. If your generosity includes making a year-end donation to a charitable organization, we at Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine recommend showing your appreciation to a nonprofit organization that’s one of our Sponsors, The Spayed Club Clinic (TSC). TSC, located in Delaware County, is one of multiple animal welfare organizations collaborating to eliminate pet euthanasia in the Greater Philadelphia area. TSC provides education, a low-cost spay/neuter program and primary care services.

Affordable, High Quality Veterinary Care

See our website for a list of services and transparent pricing.

www.TheSpayedClubClinic.org

Founded in 1990, TSC has helped over 100,000 animals. Statistics show their efforts are creating a positive trend, but there’s still much work to be done. Two examples of how donations make TSC’s work possible: Evan, an adult orange male cat, was found almost lifeless in TSC’s parking lot one cold afternoon. The Vet found Evan to be starving, freezing, dehydrated and suffering from a tick-borne illness. After a few weeks of medical treatment, Evan recovered. With assistance from rescue partners, Evan was adopted into a loving home, where he’s now thriving. Augie, a male mixed-breed dog, was brought to TSC as a nine-week-old abandoned puppy. He was full of worms and having difficulty breathing. Augie required months of medical care, but was fortunate to recover and was adopted into a loving forever home. Your generosity can help more sick pets like Evan and Augie get the medical care they need to recover and be adoptable by pet lovers. TSC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. All donations are tax deductible, and 100% goes directly to help animals in need. Benefits of LIGHT- AND DARKCOLORED ROOFING

O

ne question homeowners frequently ask when purchasing a new roof is whether a specific shingle color is best. Shingles come in many colors, and are commonly categorized as light or dark. While it seems the general consensus is that a white, reflective roof is better, when recommending a shingle color, geography, climate and building type should be primary considerations. In the U.S., there are several different climates. In states like Arizona, where the temperature rarely drops below freezing, white or reflective roofs are advised. In those hot and warm areas, if shingles will be used (instead of, for example, terracotta tiles), white or light-colored asphalt shingles that have Energy-Star ratings are recommended as an affordable roofing option. Additionally, there are even “cool” roofing materials, both light- and dark-colored, that not only reflect the sun’s UV rays but also have a high thermal emittance quality, which dissipates the absorbed heat quickly. “Cool” roof system temperatures could be 50% cooler than other roofing materials, and could add up to savings of 10 - 15% on cooling costs! States like Pennsylvania have climates more evenly split between hot and cold. The reflective nature and energy efficiency of a white roof makes sense on large industrial and commercial buildings or any building with a large roof covering. However, there are good reasons why darker roofs will look and perform better in a typical residential and even light commercial setting.

on the north-facing side of a home or areas with less sunlight, where you are additionally susceptible to condensation and ice damning. Though ventilation plays the main role in roof performance, a darker roof improves your chances that snow and ice will be eliminated faster because the roof is typically warmer. Finally, all modern asphalt shingles, even those with algaeresistant qualities and mildicides, are composed of more organic fillers than ever before, and they will eventually streak and stain. Darker shingles hide that discoloration better, and it takes several years longer for the staining to become noticeable. Further considering that asphalt shingle roofs are designed to last for 30 years or more, in the northeast U.S. climate, it makes sense to choose a darker color, ensuring your roof (and home) last and look the same for a longer period of time. M

Dark-colored roofs warm up quickly, causing ice and snow to melt faster. Snow and ice on a roof for prolonged periods of time leave you susceptible to leaks. This is important, especially

COLOR, TRIM, MAINTAIN

W

ith the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, it’s important to not forget about taking care of ourselves and, of course, our hair. This can be a tricky time, trying to get those last-minute gifts and feast ingredients together, so let’s focus on an easy and versatile color and style this year, to keep your hair healthy and vibrant just like those holiday lights.

Photos courtesy of Julia Rosato

Kick off this season with an easy-upkeep color service! A color melt, bronding, ombre or balayage are all color services that can keep your hair looking holiday party-ready from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. All these services are also great options to correct that color that you are just not feeling too fond of anymore. After your color service is complete, there are a few simple tips to get that style vibrant, fresh and ready to go. First, start keeping a “trim schedule”: Get a trim at your holiday color appointment and then schedule one 4-6 weeks out, to keep that color fresh and hair healthy. Next, maintain your hair color and health during those cold months with a bi-weekly conditioning treatment. Moroccanoil provides the perfect hydrating mask to keep your hair always looking its best. Try to wash your hair as little as possible throughout the week. (Yes, that may sound gross, but trust us on this one.) Overwashing your hair, especially in the dry winter months, will cause it to dry out more quickly, causing a ripple effect, with you needing to get color and trims more frequently. Also, try using as little hot water on your hair as possible. Cold and warm water gives hair a shine

and doesn’t strip hair color. It also closes your pores, to keep that moisture we’re striving for locked in. And lastly, finish your hair with a light styling spray, finisher or hairspray, to keep the frizz out and the style in. Once you have your hair all ready to go, now it’s time to figure out that holiday party hairstyle you want to go for, and this year, it’s all about the accessories. Headbands and clips are the go-to this year for that easy and fashionable style. Throw in some easy curls or a cute bun and a headband or clip and you’re on your way. The hair industry is always evolving and changing, but with these healthy hair tips, colors, and tricks, you’ll be set for this year’s major trends and ready for that holiday party! M

1945: The Merriest Christmas in History

Christmas Eve 1945 headlines

orld War II, the bloodiest and cruelest war in history, ended in August 1945, when Japan surrendered in the face of nuclear annihilation. President Harry Truman encouraged “Operation Magic Carpet,” to bring home as many of our military servicemen and women as possible from Asia and Europe in time for Christmas, causing massive traffic jams and delays in all forms of transportation. To help all those travelers contact home, “Bell Telephone Company and Western Union had reserve and part-time operators standing by to handle probably the heaviest… Christmas Day business in their history.” The weather did not cooperate: By December 20th, the heaviest snowfall in 10 years covered the county, the first white Christmas since 1930, and the deepest snow since 1900.

The country had not yet returned to pre-war normal. It takes time to re-tool factories from wartime to peacetime products, so there was still a scarcity of toys and the much-sought-after nylon stockings. Newspapers apologized for the lack of Christmas greetings from advertisers, but there was a shortage of newsprint. People were allowed to light up their homes with Christmas lights, as wartime blackouts ended. And that year, there were enough turkeys available, and gas was no longer rationed, so you could visit your family and friends. The Chester Times reported: “Delaware County’s first peacetime Christmas in four years promises to be one of the most joyous and meaningful celebrations of the birth of the Prince of Peace. With hundreds of servicemen and women home for the holiday, a picturesque blanket of snow covering the area, and plenty of turkey and gifts for all, Christmas 1945 will be one long to be remembered. …Churches were filled on Sunday …as thankful Delaware Countians turned to prayer – for continued peace throughout the world, for those hospitalized …and for the families of those who gave their lives to bring about once again peacetime Christmases.” There was finally Peace on Earth, for the first time in years. As President Truman noted at the tree-lighting ceremony, “This is the Christmas that a war-weary world has prayed for.”

hen an automotive problem arises, there’s many solution providers, almost too many. So many options but so little time to be sure your vehicle will always be in the hands of a well-trained expert who’s got your best interests in mind. Over the past 70 years, 4 generations of automotive experts’ hands at Broomall’s Fritsch’s Liberty Service Center have worked long and hard and continuously re-trained so they could reliably keep up with every decade of automotive Happy Holidays industry changes.

Joe and Jane Fritsch’s original service station, circa 1950

As the Baby Boomers were born, the auto industry and Fritsch’s Sunoco both grew rapidly. When Bill’s dad Herman and his uncle Carl took over running the business in the early 1960s, it had grown so much that they need to add a third service bay. For 65 years, Fritsch’s was a Sunoco station until Sunoco’s corporate growth and overpriced gas made Bill decide to switch and sell more competitively priced Liberty gas. When Bill Fritsch was in 7th grade, he started working at his dad’s business by pumping gas. From the auto mechanic masters he lived with, he quickly learned how to diagnose and fix engine problems. After high school, Bill completed a 13-month automotive training program, and then worked as a Mechanic for his dad and also helped grow the business. Since his dad retired in the mid-’90s, Bill has run the business, and is proud to have his son Vincent working with him there for eight years now after completing his formal automotive training program. Bill’s sister Mary Jane also works as his Bookkeeper, the important job their dad trained her to do and which she’s been performing ever since.

(left to right) Carl and Herman Fritsch at their 2-bay Sunoco station

In 1950, current Owner Bill Fritsch’s grandfather Joe and his wife Jane started the business at their house on S. Sproul Road. It had gas pumps but no auto repair garage; just a little storage shed and an outdoor pit where Joe and his crew worked on customers’ vehicles. Joe and Jane’s sons, Carl and Herman (Bill’s father), grew up in that house. When Carl had gone to work for another local gas station and Herman was considering leaving the family business to join the Marple Township Police Department, Bill’s grandmother wisely convinced Bill’s grandfather to talk with Sun Oil Company (Sunoco) about building a 2-bay Colonial-style service station and a house behind the station. (Bill lives in that same house today.) Sunoco’s agreement to partner convinced Bill’s dad Herman that there was indeed a future in this business, so he stayed. 16 Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together

stations. Fritsch’s Liberty Service Center at 2109 S. Sproul Road is now Broomall’s last remaining service station. The days of do-it-yourself auto maintenance are long gone, making it more important than ever to have your vehicles maintained and repaired by well-trained, honest, and dependable Automotive Technicians. When Bill’s customers bring their cars and trucks in for service and say “Do what it needs. I know you’re fair and honest,” he knows they’re showing how much they trust him, and he really appreciates that. Fritsch’s Liberty Service Center’s prices are fair and reasonable because the people who own it, run it and work there have a proud history of honestly working for your best automotive interests: a safe and reliable ride. This simple and straightforward business model is a breath of fresh air compared to today’s multi-layered corporate-owned auto repair options. When any local family-owned business stands the test of time like Fritsch’s has, it’s because the locals know and patronize a good thing when they find it. And now YOU’ve found it too! M (left to right) Vincent Fritsch with his dad Bill Fritsch

Because Bill himself benefited from experts who generously shared with him their automotive knowledge and know-how, he makes a point to do the same for the next generation. Bill continues a tradition started by his father: Employing and mentoring industrious high school students who work part-time, assisting with auto repairs and learning more from every vehicle they work on. Bill now does his part to foster in interested young people the same strong work ethic, ability to be responsible and practical life skills that his dad instilled in him and the many high schoolers who were smart and lucky enough to be trained and mentored by Herman Fritsch. Through four generations of Fritsch automotive experts, Bill has seen tremendous change. Vehicles his grandfather and father diagnosed and repaired were primarily mechanical, and, for the most part, when a breakdown occurred, you could see what was broken and needed repair or replacement. When Bill got trained, his dad’s expertise was being challenged by automotive changes such as disc brakes, fuel injection, electronic ignition, and computerized engines. Within 10 years, Auto Mechanics transformed into Auto Technicians. Now, Bill’s son Vincent diagnoses and repairs vehicles by understanding and interacting with every vehicle’s multiple computer systems that regulate and essentially allow repair or replacement of the many complex electronic components. Until about 20 years ago, Broomall, like most U.S. towns, had about a dozen service stations that sold gas and repaired cars and trucks. Almost every big intersection had three or four such

Ways to Comfort & Help a Grieving Friend

W

hen a friend loses someone close to them, it’s a natural reaction to want to support and comfort them through that difficult time. That’s what friends do, and you know they’d do the same for you. But what’s the best ways to help? What NOT to Do or Say One of the natural and normal stages of dealing with the death of a loved one is Grief. Just because it’s a sad (bad) feeling, we shouldn’t encourage or expect anyone to rush through it, to “get it over with” so they can start feeling happy again. Be considerate and keep in mind that hurt needs time to heal. Don’t say “Let me know if you need anything.” Under normal circumstances, many people aren’t comfortable asking for help because they don’t want to burden others. When people are grieving, their normal ability to make decisions is overwhelmed

by intense painful emotions. They often literally cannot focus on or express what they need. Asking them to decide how you can help them is a request that’s difficult or impossible for them to fulfill. Also refrain from saying “Your loved one is in a much better place.” Your friend may share your relief that illness or suffering is over for their dear departed one, but they may not also share your beliefs about what comes after death. A more helpful thing to say is “I’d be honored to listen if you feel like sharing how this experience feels for you.” Listening as a Form of Love Sometimes people just need someone who will sit with them and listen. Your friend may want to talk about how they’re feeling or just share stories of their loved one. In either case, it’s important to remember to say less and listen more. Experiencing grief as a reaction to loss is appropriate and necessary. Assure your friend that shock, sadness, despair and other “bad” feelings are actually normal. Grieving that never happens or is left unfinished often makes future sad experiences worse. When grief can be expressed verbally, space is created for good feelings such as acceptance and peace of mind. Your compassion, understanding and support will help your grieving friend begin, when they’re ready, to trust that their pain and sadness will eventually be replaced by joy from memories of happier days. White Chocolate Cranberry Scones

As a kid, Christmas morning didn’t officially start until my mom made her specialty scones.

Ingredients

By Rose Alexander

• 2½ cups flour • 1/4 cup sugar

• 2 tsp. baking powder • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1/2 cup cold butter • 1/2 cup dried cranberries

• 3/4 cup white chocolate chips (or sub. chopped baking choc.) • 2/3 cup buttermilk (add 2/3 Tbsp. white vinegar to milk and let stand for 5 min. as a buttermilk sub.) • 1 egg • 1 Tbsp. heavy cream • 1 Tbsp. coarse sugar

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. 2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. 3. Stir in cranberries and white chocolate. 4. Mix in buttermilk and egg until just combined and forms a shaggy ball. 5. Roll out slightly and cut into 12 triangles. Brush each scone with a little cream and sprinkle with sugar. 6. Bake for 15 minutes or until barely golden around the edges.
