History Spotlight

A Wedding‌ and Divorce Written by Doug Humes

T

he adjoining townships of Marple and Newtown, both sparsely populated farm communities, came together in 1914 to fund and construct a joint high school. The communities celebrated 100 years of that happy marriage in 2014, and a wonderful timeline full of photos and artifacts from those 100 years now lines the hallways of the high school.

In 1960, historians in each community proposed a joint historical society as well, and the Marple Newtown Historical Society was formed that year. That marriage had a successful 25 year run, but ultimately ended in divorce years later (a personality clash at the time). Now each community has its own historical society.

The Marple Historical Society now concentrates most of its efforts on the historic Massey House and events that celebrate the building and the generations of families who have lived there. They also have monthly speakers on history topics, held in the adjoining church building, have an archive of local history documents and artifacts, have a Facebook page, and a website, www.marplehistoricalsociety.org.

The original members are all gone; the current members will someday be history too. The only way that community institutions such as this endure is because community-minded people join them, pick up the torch and pass it along to the next generation. Please support your local historical society and help us pay our local history forward to the next generation.

T

he room was completely dark when Kristen Mancini woke up to the sound of baby Nina. Glancing over at the clock and seeing 3:00am, Kristen huffed as she shuffled out of bed and walked down the hall.

With each step closer to Nina’s room, Kristen’s steps got lighter and her head went from sagging down to straight up. By the time she got into the baby’s room and picked Nina up, Kristen had a bright smile on her tired face. She rocked Nina and snuggled her against her shoulder. What was once a chore is now a privilege that puts a smile on Kristen’s face because Nina is Kristen and Dean Mancini’s newly adopted daughter and could potentially be their last baby.

The story doesn’t start with Nina at one year old and Kristen at three in the morning. It all really begins decades before, when Kristen and Dean Mancini were in fifth grade.

Kristen and Dean were sitting in the Manoa Elementary School Principal’s office, preparing to transfer there as 5th graders.

Their meeting that day and their mutual nervousness and bravery would be the start of their lifelong friendship.

Kristen and Dean remained friends throughout high school. As everyone in their group of friends paired off, Kristen and Dean spent all of their time together. After graduating high school, Kristen brought up the idea of potentially dating.

“At first, Dean said no,” Kristen laughed. “He wanted to protect our friendship, which was nice. But eventually I wore him down and he agreed.”

Dean was pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering at Penn State, later transferring to Widener, while Kristen was pursuing a Communications degree at Villanova. After graduation, Dean, a budding engineer, got a job at Boeing Helicopters, where he worked on the V22 Osprey. Kristen graduated from Villanova and started working in the radio industry.

Dean and Kristen dated for eight years while they focused on starting their careers. Then they got married, at St. Dorothy’s in Drexel Hill.

In 2003, Dean took over his father’s business, TDI Technologies, which at the time focused on technical documentation. Since then, Dean has grown the business from five to 45 employees and, with all that talent, the company now also provides professional services including engineering, cybersecurity, software development and research and development projects.

“It was a challenge, but we were lucky in that we hired a team that is outstanding,” Dean raved of his employees. “Everyone in the company is like family to us. It’s been terrific.”

While Dean was growing TDI Technologies, Kristen was developing her professional skills through jobs she really enjoyed: internship at WYSP-FM, work with a voiceover/production company, and Assistant Director of the Graduate Business Program at St. Joe’s. She also worked for a few years at her brother’s insurance consulting business.

Kristen continued working full-time after their first daughter, Natalie, was born in 2007. A year later, the family found their home in Marple. But in 2009, when Kristen had their second daughter, Noelle, Kristen decided to stop working full-time and found a perfect part-time role at TDI as the Benefits Administrator. “Kristen doesn’t report to me at work,” Dean joked.

“I think that’s really important for a healthy marriage.”

The Mancinis have lived in Marple for 11 years now, and love the community that they have become a part of.

Marple really is a great community.

“Marple really is a great community,” Dean emphasized. “The neighborhood is full of kids, we’ve met people through the girls’ school and activities. It’s a great community to raise kids in.”

Their daughter Natalie, now 12, is starting to pick up responsibilities around the house. “She is the little mommy of the house,” Kristen said with a smile, “and kind of an old soul.”

Natalie enjoys several activities, primarily softball and basketball. When she isn’t playing sports, she also enjoys singing and dancing. She has enjoyed learning ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.

Noelle, nine years old, is the comedian of the family. Beneath her comedic surface, Noelle also has a very sweet and sensitive heart. “She writes very heartfelt stories,” Kristen noted. “For

being such a goofy funny kid, she has so much heart that comes through in her writing.” Last year, Noelle was a winner in a county writing contest. This year, she will submit another story, entitled The Day I Met Her, which shares her experiences meeting her newly adopted sister Nina. “I cried when I read it. All her teachers cried too,” Kristen shared. “Noelle’s heart is amazing.”

Last year, after two long years of waiting, Kristen and Dean adopted their third daughter, Nina. They connected with the mother months before Nina’s birth, and were prepared to head up to Connecticut, where they would meet her at the hospital.

Despite their best efforts, the process did not go exactly as planned.

The first unexpected twist was that Nina came early. With two hours notice, Kristen and Dean had to leave work early and find somewhere for Natalie and Noelle to stay. The next twist continued on page 8

came with the return trip. Because they would be crossing state lines with a child that they did not enter with, extensive paperwork was required. Before they could leave the state, their paperwork had to be reviewed and evaluated, a process that took two weeks. Their expected brief stay in Connecticut suddenly became a two-week visit.

“We were stuck there. But it was good for us,” Dean explained.

“It really gave us a chance to focus on Nina and bond with her before introducing her to Natalie and Noelle.”

Ever since Nina has become a part of their life, gratitude has been constant around the Mancini household. They are grateful that, after a long wait, Kristen and Dean were able to welcome a third daughter into their home. Grateful that they were able to give Nina a home and a family where she can flourish.

Grateful that, after believing she may never get another chance, Kristen gets to wake up at three in the morning to the sound of a baby.

plash is a vision of two long-time Marple community residents. After several months of construction, Splash will hold its Grand Opening Saturday, May 25. Splash is excited to bring back the memory of life at the pool.

Splash will have many features and amenities for people of all ages to enjoy. There are two large pools and a “baby pool” for the younger children. Private cabanas will be available for daily or seasonal rentals. The Splash Truck will feature coffee, pastries, gelato, ice cream, and water ice. The Wave Cafe is temperature controlled and will have a chef all season who will be creating a revolving menu of classic pool food with a twist. Splash is excited to let everyone know that The Splash Truck and The Wave Cafe will be open for all the public, not just members.

There will be theme music nights with food and dancing, outdoor movies, and games for the whole family to enjoy. When’s the Right Time to Upgrade My Electrical System?

T

here are two sets of circumstances that could lead to replacing or upgrading your main electrical system: planned and unplanned. Examples of planned replacements or upgrades include installing a new hot tub or power circuit, renovating a basement or kitchen, or completing a new addition to the home.

When considering adding a hot tub, electric car power outlet, or any renovation that will require significant additional electricity, the existing main panel often requires replacement because it’s either overloaded with circuits or the panel is full.

Sometimes such renovations require that the home’s electric service be increased to 200amp or even 400amp.

occurs, the results could be downed power lines on your property and water entering your main panel, causing lights in your home to blink and even total power failure.

Many homes built over 80 years ago have active knob and tube wiring. This is often discovered during an inspection done when someone is considering buying the home. That type of wiring is also often discovered when an electrician is called in to determine why lights in the home suddenly start blinking.

Occasional or frequent electrical malfunctions can be a sign that the electrical panel is under stress or has deteriorated due to chronic overheating of overloaded circuits. When rewiring is required, the main panel must often be replaced. That’s also when upgrading the home’s entire electrical service is required or recommended.

Whether planned or unplanned, replacing a main electrical panel or upgrading the entire electrical service is a major decision for a homeowner. The safest and most reliable option is to work with a licensed and insured electrical contractor. M

We are excited to announce the 2nd annual Haverford Home & Garden Show which will be held on May 18 - 19th, 2019 at Haverford Reserve, 9000 Parkview Drive, Haverford, PA. The show features 75+ vendors, displays, food trucks, presentations, make & takes, and keynote speaker Jeff Devlin from HGTV and DIY Network. We will be having a ticketed preview night from 5 - 9pm on Saturday, where all indoor vendors will be set up, and we will have food and drink samples, live music, and more. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and include admission to Sunday as well.

The hours on Sunday will be 10am-4pm. Cost is $5; children under 12 are free. The 75+ vendors will be representing a variety of businesses such as general contractors, architects, interior designers, arborists, plumbers, electricians, roofers, painters, lawn care providers, realtors, financial services such as banks, phone and internet services, and businesses that sell home improvement, gardening or landscaping products.

There will be a marketplace where vendors will sell home and garden items such as garden tools, bird houses and bird feeders, fine art, plants, pillows and table linens, candles, antiques and gift items. We will also have several food trucks/vendors at the event on Sunday.

The 5th Annual Wild Bill Guarnere Golf Outing

T

he 5th Annual Wild Bill Guarnere Golf Outing and Dinner will be held on Friday, May 31 at the Paxon Hollow Golf Club. In addition to a day of golf, many other fun activities are planned: Speakers, a silent auction and raffle giveaway with some of Bill’s memorabilia, a DJ, and a dinner at the end of the day. All proceeds from this event benefit the Wild Bill Guarnere Memorial Fund, which supports our Veterans and their families both financially and through community education.

Wild Bill Guarnere was a World War II Army Veteran who was wounded in action and lost his leg. His story was made famous in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. Bill and his family traveled around the world, meeting celebrities like Tom Hanks, who produced the series. Bill used his fame to give back to other veterans, donating to veteran causes and traveling to hospitals, to give support and advice to soldiers returning from war due to injury.

Bill passed away in March of 2014 at age 90. His funeral service was an amazing symbol of the national respect and affection for Bill and his selfless service to his country. Broad Street was closed as well as the entire route down I- 95 to the cemetery in Broomall. Here, he met his final resting place beside his wife, Frances. The procession made its way through Philadelphia with a police escort.

Bill’s granddaughter, Debi Rafferty, remembers that day very clearly. “I remember driving by City Hall, with police cars around us,” Debi recounted. “Seeing people standing and saluting with American flags was very humbling and inspiring.”

Bill’s funeral service inspired Debi to start the Wild Bill Guarnere Memorial Fund. It started as an effort to raise money for a statue of Bill, which now stands at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial. Awed and inspired by the overwhelming support and love from so many people around the world, Debi decided to continue raising money for the causes Bill supported throughout his lifetime and taught his family to also support.

The Wild Bill Guarnere Memorial Fund raises money for causes such as: • Alpha Bravo Canine, which raises dogs for veterans with PTSD • The Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports veterans, first responders, and their families • Memorial education at the Delaware County Veterans Memorial. School children come to the Memorial on school trips, to learn about World War II and the veterans memo rialized there. Debi and her father Gene, a Vietnam War Veteran, come to the Memorial often, to speak to the children about Bill.

Debi and Gene are again very excited about the May 31 golf outing, which is the organization’s major fundraising event each year. People of all ages are encouraged to participate. It’s a great way to enjoy the start of summer with golf and dinner while also supporting the fund that continues Wild Bill Guarnere’s legacy. T

he Broomall Rotary’s Little Free Library, #80236, welcomes all ages with a wide variety of genres of reading materials. Built by Chris Stack, the two-story library is one of several literacy projects being led by his wife Leslie Stack, the current President of the Broomall Rotary Club.

Literacy in this Little Free Library (LFL) comes in the form of books, magazines, bookmarks, audiobooks, flashcards, CDs, DVDs, reading glasses, coloring books, crayons and markers, and calendars. Each time a neighbor visits, they will always find something new.

The bright yellow and red house can’t be missed at the walking path and playground at the Broomall Rotary Veterans Memorial Park. This library is registered with the Little Free Library organization, known for its motto: “Take a Book, Share a Book.”

Leslie Stack encourages people to enjoy use of the LFL even when they don’t have a book to share. “Within our work in the Broomall Rotary, we know that there are members of our community who do not own any books and we want to encourage them to use the Little Free Library even if they don’t

have books to share,” said Stack. After visiting the LFL, readers may return the original book, share a different book, pass the original book on to a friend, drop it off at a different Little Free Library or keep what they have taken from the LFL. All items originating from donations associated with the Broomall Rotary have an LFL stamp inside. Those without the stamp have been donated by a member of the community.

The idea of the Little Free Library is to create a community where the library reflects the interests and needs of its neighbors through the give and take of items. This also encourages patrons to visit their local Marple Public Library once they have found a new subject or favorite author through the Little Free Library.

Prior to becoming a Licensed Funeral Director, Rob earned his Bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College where he was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity. After graduating, Rob attended the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service.

Traumatic Brushing: Heavy scrubbing during brushing, and using ANYTHING other than a soft tooth brush can and will lead to gum recession in most adults.

• Never use a hard or medium brush, always use a soft brush.

Gum Recession

D

o your teeth get sensitive to cold air or liquids? Do they get sensitive when you eat something sweet? Do your teeth appear to be getting longer, or slightly darker at the gum line?

If the answer is yes to any or all of the above questions, you may have gum recession. In fact, half of all adults in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 65 have some form of gum recession.

Our teeth are naturally supported by the tissues of the mouth including the bone of the jaw and a protective layer of gum tissue. If the gum tissue begins to pull away from the edges of our tooth enamel, the living roots of our teeth become exposed.

This can lead to sensitivity, root cavities, and an unattractive long appearance to the teeth.

What is the Cause of Gum Recession? Gum recession is now known to be caused by many factors. People who have thin, scalloped gums are more susceptible to gum recession in the presence of other factors such as: Poor oral hygiene: Gingivitis due to poor brushing and flossing habits can lead to inflammation and bleeding of the gums. Over time, this can lead to gum recession.

• Never scrub back and forth. Use gentle wrist action in a circle, or an up and down pattern.

• Always use a brand name toothpaste. Off brand and “Natural” toothpaste preparations can vary greatly in their abrasiveness.

Tooth Position and Orthodontics: We now know that teeth that are too close to the outer edges of the jaw ridge are more prone to gum recession.

• Individual teeth that are pushed toward the lip during crowd ing are highly susceptible to recession.

• Orthodontic treatment to reduce crowding can contribute to recession unless jaw expansion is performed at a relatively early age, and prior to tooth movement.

Ill-fitting or failing restorations: It is very common for a failing filling, or an improperly contoured cap to cause chronic inflammation of the gum. This will almost always result in recession over time.

Through knowledge and healthy practices, gum recession is largely preventable for most people, and others may be able to greatly reduce both the rate, and the severity of the condition.
