Debunking the Vent-Free

Gas Fireplace Myth

V

ent-free appliances are similar to other space-heating and hearth products, with one exception – they don’t have a vent. There is a large misconception when it comes to vent-free gas, but the truth is there are many valuable benefits to this type of heating.

Today, vent-free gas appliances include heaters, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, stoves, and log sets, and every year manufacturers introduce new designs and styles of vent-free products.

Converting your wood-burning fireplace to a vent-free gas log set eliminates the hassle and mess of hauling in wood, disposing of ashes, lighting uncooperative kindling, tending the fire, and guarding against stray embers.

Additionally, installation costs of vent-free products are up to 60 percent less than the cost of installing vented heating appliances, as there is no need to cut through exterior walls or creating an expensive chimney or vent system. Any of the 62 million homes that are supplied with natural or propane gas can inexpensively have a professional install a vent-free heater, fireplace, stove or log set. A certified installer familiar with vent-free products and local building codes can help you choose the right-sized product for your home and install it properly within an hour.

The most common myth about vent-free gas heat is that they are unsafe. First, vent-free appliances feature an automatic safety shut-off device (Oxygen Detection System or ODS). The ODS turns off the gas in case of a malfunction.

Second, with 17 million units installed in the U.S. alone since 1980, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that it is not aware of any documented incident in the CPSC In-Depth Investigation (IDI) database of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning associated with an ODS-equipped vent-free gas heating product. Vent-free gas heaters, fireplaces, stoves and log sets meet all of the most relevant indoor air quality standards and guidelines and have an outstanding safety record.

In addition, in 1996 the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance, members of GAMA, an Association of Appliance and Equipment Manufacturers, commissioned an independent research project to be conducted by the American Gas Association Research Division (AGAR). The researchers concluded that “vent-free gas heating products performed well within nationally recognized guidelines for indoor air quality.

This research proves that vent-free gas heating products meet applicable emissions requirements even when used over extended time periods, among sensitive populations, and with units whose maximum heat output exceeds the requirements of the space.” This landmark research has been extensively peer-reviewed and has served as the basis for acceptance of vent-free gas products by national code groups and state regulatory agencies.

Vent-free gas heating has been proven time and again as a safe option, and for many people it is a cost-efficient and hassle-free alternative to other heating options. M

Early Schools in Marple Township

illiam Penn, like all visionaries, had particular ideas about how life was going to be different in his colony. In 1682, he wrote the first “Frame of Government” which outlined his ideas. Article XII provided that “the Governor and provincial Council shall erect and order all public schools”. This was a new idea – there was no compulsory public education in the world at that time. Most people could not read or write. Tavern signs had pictures of a “Black Swan” or a Spread Eagle or a painting of the King of Prussia, because travelers could not read.

bit with the brick Public School No. 2, used until 1923 and then converted to a home (still standing on Sproul road across from Lawrence Park). A 4th public school, built in 1875 on Cedar Grove Road, served until the public schools were consolidated in 1923. The old school is now a residence.

We drive by these last two surviving 19th century school buildings every day without realizing they are there. Look out for them on your next drive home.

Penn’s Quakers, who were the first to come here from England, took him at his word, and erected schools for their children, which they would then financially support. Over time, they allowed other children to attend, if their parents paid a fee.

But in an agrarian economy, jobs were plentiful on the farm and you did not need to read or write to earn a living as a farmhand, or to develop a trade that would give you employment. It was not until 1834 that Pennsylvania took a serious run at compulsory education, passing the Public School Law that required all counties, townships and boroughs to form school districts, build schools, hire teachers and educate all of their children.

In 1818, a subscription school called Marple Seminary No. 1, was built at the corner of what is now Marple Presbyterian Church cemetery, to serve the northern end of the township.

When the school act passed, that school became a public school.

When the church was built, the school was replaced with a two story building across Marple road. In 1836, Marple built a school, replacing the existing Quaker School, on the west side of the Great Marple Road, across the street from today’s O’Hara High School. That school was replaced up the road a January 2019 January 2019 /

M

ichele and Stephen Moran have found their dream home in Marple, two self-starter entrepreneurs making a living out of what they love to do. Everything is fast and energetic in their home, and most of the time that’s exactly how they like it.

The two met in Wildwood when they were 20 and 21. Michele was good friends with Stephen’s niece, who is also their age. There is a significant age gap between Stephen and his older brother.

“She was just there to hang out with Steph, but through my charm, I was able to win her over,” Stephen joked.

After years of dating, Michele and Stephen got married and currently have five children and another on the way.

Stephen, nine years old, is the oldest of their children. He is sensitive and sweet, and an expert paper airplane maker. He takes pride in how fast he can make them, always working to get faster and have them fly farther.

Christie, seven years old, is a naturally gifted singer. She is in second grade at Saint Annie’s and has an incredibly generous heart toward her family and friends at school. Her only wish for Christmas was gifts for the ones she loves.

Cara, six years old, is in first grade at Saint Annie’s. Her favorite thing to do is play in the snow and color. She is fierce, strong-spirited and can make her whole family laugh.

Bridget, five years old, is in pre-K and is very soft-spoken. If she had it her way, she would wear a full dress to school every day. She is musical like her older sisters, and wants to learn how to play the guitar when she gets older.

Shawn is the youngest at three years old. He is very adventurous and loves to play, and Michele takes pride in the fact that, no matter how many times he may stumble and fall, he gets right back up with a smile on his face.

Having children in such quick succession has been an exciting challenge for Michele and Stephen. There are benefits and costs to having kids that close together, but seeing all the kids playing together and growing up as close friends makes it all worth it ten times over.

“It’s the best seeing them together, makes it all worth it,” Michele said with a smile.

When Michele and Stephen aren’t busy raising five children that are all still single-digit years, they are chasing their dreams professionally. Michele created her own business as a wedding photographer out of night classes and a natural skill for business. Through that sheer determination, Michele has built a company that has become an incredibly successful operation.

She shot over forty weddings this year, as well as corporate headshots, family photo shoots and resort photography.

The resort photography has been especially fun for Michele. She and Stephen travelled to St. Lucia this summer to photograph a resort by the beach. With a mountain range behind them and the Caribbean in front, the two spent four days in paradise while she photographed everything the resort had to offer.

Stephen works as an IT specialist for Garnet Valley school district, overseeing the entire school district’s technology departments. Stephen gets to travel from school to school, overseeing operations and working with specialists from each

school. It’s a job Stephen takes a lot of pride in and is able to take advantage of his education in computer technology, but it was clear that his second job is where he feels truly fulfilled.

On nights and weekends, Stephen joins his longtime friend to form an Irish duo called Moran and Kelly that performs at shows, corporate events and wedding cocktail hours. The combination of his passion for music and being able to perform with his good friend as a job is a dream come true for Stephen.

“It’s for fun, and it’s a little side gig,” Stephen explained. “And doing it with a long-time buddy makes it that much easier. We get along great, we never fight or anything.”

Michele rolled her eyes at this remark jokingly, and the two broke out laughing.

This is all we ever dreamed of.

“He loves saying that, I see him posting pictures of him and his bandmate all the time, and I always say to him ‘I don’t see you posting photos of your wife this often’,” Michele laughed.

The life Michele and Stephen have thoughtfully crafted in Marple has been years in the making. Stephen grew up in Broomall, and would always rave about the community to his wife while they lived elsewhere.

“We are positively obsessed. We just absolutely love it, it feels like we are living our dream,” Michele glowed. “This is all we ever dreamed of.”

The pair first started their family in a row home that quickly became small as their family grew. Before they were able to find their dream home, the two would drive their children to Saint Annie’s in Marple every day. The long drive would be a daily encouragement to move their family to Marple that eventually became a reality.

The Moran life is loud and energetic, often unpredictable but entirely enjoyable. There are kids running around the home throwing paper airplanes and singing. Michele gets home late from capturing a wedding and Stephen gets home late from performing as an Irish duo at a local bar. Things can get hectic, but the Morans know how to take the most out of life and cherish what they earned.

“One of our favorite things to do is have a cup of coffee together on our deck when the weather is nice, and when it’s cold we sit on the couch and look out at our street,” Michele said with a sigh. “Over two years after moving in, we’re still obsessed with our house and street.”

The family was able to take a vacation to the Poconos to celebrate Bridget’s birthday. Quality time with family can be hard to find at times, so getting the opportunity to slow down and appreciate the life they have is incredibly valuable. Once they all do manage to slow down and look around, it becomes clear that what they have is exactly what they always wanted: a dream in Marple that changes and grows with every day. M

Mind Your Own Business began looking for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes.

Then he started looking in and under cars until a policeman approached him and asked, “What are you doing?”

“Playing a game,” the boy replied.

“What is your name?” the officer questioned.

“Mind Your Own Business.” Furious the policeman inquired, “Are you looking for trouble?!”

The boy replied, “Why, yes I am, how did you know.”

Chicken Pot Pie

Not a pot pie person? Try this one.

It could change your mind.

1 cooked rotisserie chicken, deboned and chopped 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 onions, chopped 1 pound carrots, chopped 1 heart of celery, chopped 2 crowns of broccoli, chopped 1 crown of cauliflower, chopped 1 bag frozen corn 1 bag frozen peas 3 cans cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup 3 empty soup cans of milk Cajun seasoning to taste 2 packages of ready-made pie crust (be sure your packages come with a top and a bottom) Heat oven to 375 degrees. Over medium heat, sauté onions, carrots, celery, broccoli and cauliflower in olive oil until tender. Add chicken, corn and peas until thawed and hot throughout. In a large bowl combine soup, milk, sautéed mix and Cajun seasoning to taste. Lay pie crust in the bottom of two separate pie dishes. Evenly distribute pasty filling into the crusts. Cover each pie with its top piecrust and seal the edges by pressing down with a fork. Slice a hole in the top of the pie so bubbles can be seen when done. Place the sealed pies on a cookie sheet and cook for 35 minutes. Pies are done when the crusts are brown and the filling is bubbling.

Only need one pot pie? This recipe can be frozen. Wrap an intact pie in plastic wrap and then in foil and place in the freezer for up to one month. Or, just freeze the filling in a freezer safe container and add it to a piecrust whenever you are ready.

yan Tree Care is a local company that offers various tree services to the people of Marple. The business has expanded over the years to tree inspection and assessment, trimming, stump grinding and 24-hour emergency tree services.

Tim Ryan is the owner of Ryan Tree Care and has been a part of the community his whole life, growing up in Newtown Square and attending Marple Newtown school district until graduating in 2001. While attending Marple Newtown High School, Tim worked for Newtown Square Pizza making hoagies, and later working for NSA Beverage, owned by Pete Crisanti, who currently co-owns the Lamb Tavern and Casey’s and is a proud advertiser and previous business profile for this magazine.

Ryan Tree Care has been something Tim takes great pride in.

The career began like many do, slowly and then all at once. Tim had graduated high school and began working for a tree company, something he enjoyed and was good at from the beginning.

The work can be long and strenuous, with many variables that his team has to work with, and what Tim enjoys the most about what he does is the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with a job done truly well.

“There’s nothing I like more in this career than the satisfaction of a job well done,” Tim explained. “I love when I go back at the end of a job, everything’s clean and the customer is happy.”

Everything being clean is something that Tim stressed. There is a common misconception, at least as Tim has noticed over time, that tree work is incredibly messy and there will be something left behind, either the stump, debris or torn soil. Ryan Tree Care takes extra pride in the idea that the property will be nicer after the job is done, left better than when they arrived.

For example, instead of removing the tree and leaving, Tim’s team will stay to grind the stump, get it to grade level, then add topsoil and seed. When his team has completed the project, the ground will look like it was never disturbed in any way.

The need for Tim’s services varies by person, based on the context of the situation and the type of tree.

“Many of the tree services we perform are for trees that are dying or decayed,” Tim explained.

A declining tree can include instances where the bark is falling off, the tree isn’t blooming the time of year that it should, or there could be a decline in foliage. In those cases, Tim’s team would use various tools and equipment to remove the tree safely and leave the yard better looking than when they arrived.

Another common instance of tree service is emergency tree repair. Treefall can be highly unpredictable, and Tim prides himself in being a 24-hour on-call service for storm damage or any fallen tree emergencies.

“Something special about the way we operate is we make sure to use the most state-of-the-art equipment,” Tim said.

“We have cranes, chippers, bucket trucks, stump grinders, chip trucks, and we’re always looking to improve and update.

And we wash our trucks every Friday, my obsessive nature wouldn’t allow my service to arrive with a dirty truck.”

Tim was proud to consider his work ethic slightly obsessive, something he has had ever since he started working. When he isn’t at home with his wife Connie or his eight year-old daughter Ella, he is working or searching for something to work on.

This Christmas break, the trio will be going to Disney World for a well-earned vacation. Tim and Connie took Ella to Disney World when she was three, but they are very excited for her experience now that she is older.

When he does make time for vacation, Tim likes to go fishing on the bay along the Jersey Shore or spend time with his two French bulldogs, Bentley and April. Time off can be hard to find in his business. There isn’t a season where tree service isn’t possible, the winter can actually be ideal weather because the ground is so hard that the trucks won’t bring up any mud as they cross the backyard.

Indentifying Water Damage

A

side from a broken heating system or appliance, water may be the biggest source of frustration for homeowners. Water can do a lot of damage if not managed properly, as it can damage almost every building material.

Though most exterior claddings, such as roofing and siding, are specifically engineered to keep your home dry, there can always be instances of leaks, and being able to identify the source is the first step to an efficient repair.

Starting in the basement, if you notice moisture on the floor or on the walls, it is likely due to groundwater rising through the slab, or from runoff seeping through a foundation crack. Some homes are just built in areas that used to have natural streams running through them, or are down in a valley. Keeping a basement dry could require a simple repair, or the installation of exterior or interior drainage systems. There are several companies who specialize in precisely this type of work.

Finding a water stain on the first floor of a two-story home can get a bit tricky. Though it’s not uncommon for a roof or siding leak to travel through the walls of a home, sometimes

it ends up being an issue with plumbing pipes, or condensation from HVAC ducts. The best way to differentiate these leaks is to establish the location of the water. Is it on an exterior wall?

Is it under or above a window? Is it under the bathroom? Is it near an HVAC register? Does it happen only when it rains? If so, is it only during a wind driven rain?

Most building owners find water infiltration in the living space located directly below the roof or attic space. At this point, it can really only be a few things: a roof leak, a masonry leak, or condensation. A roof leak can happen because of damaged or missing shingles, nail-pops penetrating back up through the shingle, improperly installed flashing, just to name a few. For these instances, there are specially designed paints and clear sealants used to eliminate this saturation of the materials.

These solutions can be the first steps anyone can take to identifying water damage and repairing it. If significant damage has been done, you may need to contact your local professional for further assistance. M

inter season is officially upon us – the holidays are over and now it’s time to work on those resolutions we made to start the new year.

While some promise to eat healthier and others vow to exercise more, here’s one promise to yourself that you should definitely keep – taking care of your hair through the winter weather.

It’s no secret – our hair sure takes a beating during the harsh, cold temperatures that the winter tends to bring. One common struggle is static and frizz.

To keep your hair static-free, one way is to avoid washing your hair every day. If your hair is starting to feel less-than-fresh, try using a dry shampoo. Some great dry shampoo brands to guarantee a fresh, clean feeling are Aquage and Moroccanoil.

Another common struggle for hair during winter weather is dryness. Your hair is robbed of its moisture during winter months.

Using a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week will help restore any moisture to your hair, along with leaving it feeling silky and smooth. Morocanoil deep conditioner or Joico Lusterlock are two great brands to help your hair regain its moisture.

While these tips are surefire ways to keep your hair healthy through the winter, the best way to maintain your hair’s health is with frequent trims. This is a crucial part of keeping your hair healthy because it will rid your hair of dead ends.

It is also important to – believe it or not – watch your diet to keep your hair healthy. Foods that are rich in natural oils, minerals, and vitamins can help boost and maintain your hair’s shine.

While winter is already upon us, it is certainly not too late to begin following these tips. We still have more winter months ahead, so show your hair the love it deserves. M

New Year, New You: How to Live Well

New Year’s resolutions are positive tools to lead us toward living a better and healthier life. Popular goals made this time of year include being healthier and losing weight, which is evident by the swell in January gym memberships. Others say making more money is high on their list for the new year. Interestingly, Americans’ resolutions in recent years have trended more toward committing to a higher quality of life, with “living life to the fullest” being at the top of most lists (Money.com). If you’re excited by this new resolution trend too, here are a few ways to “live well” in 2019.

Imagine the Perfect Day

What does the perfect day look like to you? For may of us, it includes a mixture of productivity and free time. If you have an idea in mind of what makes you happy and what your ideal day looks like, it becomes more likely you will seek those things out more regularly.

Make Connections

Living well has much to do with the people we surround ourselves with. Beyond spending time with friends and family, take a moment to seek out a neighbor or someone in your community.

You can never have too many friends.

Set Aside Quiet Time

Whether it’s 20 minutes of yoga in the morning, a moment of meditation before you fall asleep at night or listening to relaxing music as you wind down, quiet time is important. Use this daily time to think about the day and what you are grateful for.

Love People (And Yourself!) as They Are

This is tough. It’s human nature to want to change people. Our spouses and children, especially. The more we love and accept people for who they are now and stop waiting for them to change, the happier we will be. This is known as unconditional love, and it’s incredibly empowering to give and receive it.

Become A Minimalist

Or at least live more minimally. Getting rid of clutter can be extremely difficult, but it’s a good place to start. Do one room a month so you don’t get overwhelmed. Sort out things you haven’t used or worn for six months and donate them. For those of us who are visual people, removing clutter can help make us feel more relaxed. Donate everything that is in good condition.

S

t. Mark’s United Methodist Church spreads the word of God while also providing food, shelter, and education to those in need around the community. Through many acts of charity and philanthropic group activities, Pastor Ken Gelzhiser and St. Mark’s have been able to give back to the neighborhood while also pulling it closer together.

Pastor Ken first got his inspiration to pursue this line of work as a student in college. He was years separated from his faith, having spent less time at church with each year. His father met with him one night and told him something that has stuck with him ever since.

“What I’m telling you tonight won’t make sense, but in time it will.”

His father said “I just wanted to share with you, that I think God is going to call you to serve him.”

This was especially resonant with Pastor Ken, as his father was not very religious at the time. Though always insisting he and his mother attend church regularly, Pastor Ken’s father had not been to church in many years.

Several weeks after this exchange, Pastor Ken was visited by his mother, who was there to tell him that his father had passed away of a sudden heart attack. The news devastated him, and the next several months were a blur of depression and social regression.

That holiday season, he was fortunate enough to come to a candlelit Christmas service to hear a young pastor’s sermon.

This young pastor spoke about the healing power of Jesus, and for the first time in his life Pastor Ken was genuinely and completely overwhelmed by the word of God. “I realized I was on a different road now, the depression I had was lifted,” Pastor Ken explained. “It suddenly dawned on me that my Earthly father was sending me to my Heavenly father.”

After the seminary, he became a pastor at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Broomall, a position that has provided pride and satisfaction for Pastor Ken for many years. He delivers sermons and leads services at the church, and organizes community events that give back to the people of Marple in many ways.

Some of the community programs Pastor Ken enjoys leading are PB&J night, where people come together to make as many sandwiches as possible for people in need. Another program, Children of the Son, provides pre-school education and day care for children six weeks and above whose parents need to return to work. There is also a math and English after-school tutoring program on Wednesday afternoons.

Pastor Ken doesn’t work at St. Mark’s alone, and owes much of the success of the organization to the people he works with. Maria Kollar is a certified lay minister at the church and the director of the food center. Ula Christopher is an ordained deacon and helps Pastor Ken with many of the duties around the church.
