Dear Friends & Neighbors, This summer it’s staycations: short trips to local destinations. And I’m OK with that. Our family will return to Longwood Gardens, spend weekends at the Splash Surf Club, and make day trips to the beach. We hope to walk Knobel’s Amusement Park, social distancing of course, for some pandemic stress therapy. I do need the sights, lights, sounds and tastes of summer. Just a little bit, please!

This issue launches our third year of Marple Friends & Neighbors. We made it through the pandemic, but I can’t say that for all our Sponsors. Some are still at risk due to reduced business. And yet, most continue their sponsorship into our third year Bringing People Together in print and online at www.MarpleMag.com. It’s time. I can’t wait any longer to rally readers to now pay it forward. And so, this month in my Bringing People Together feature on page 16, I will try. Find out how Marple can become like Bedford Falls for our Sponsors who empower us with hometown pride. This month, we’re empowered by new Sponsors who know the power our magazine has to promote local businesses. One literally empowers us: Countywide Generators, LLC, based right here in Broomall. Owner Steve Di Tomo protects us from power failures. His story was so important I wanted to share it in this anniversary issue. (See page 14.) Read how Countywide Generators empowers Broomall homeowners with installed backup electric power generators. Now, besides keeping your magazine arriving in the mail, Steve Di Tomo and his team at Countywide Generators can also give us uninterrupted electric power to keep our families safe. We also welcome a new Expert Contributor this month, one who empowers us in a different way, for the better welfare of our animals. Donna Dybus, Clinic Director of The Spayed Club Clinic will now be providing us with Veterinarian Care & Animal Welfare features on behalf of The Spayed Club Clinic, the non-profit veterinary clinic known across Delaware County for its heroic commitment to animal welfare and much lower charges for veterinary services. Look for Donna’s first feature on page 24 and visit The Spayed Club Clinic’s website at www.TheSpayedClubClinic.org. Find out how this hometown Sponsor offers their unique expertise with significant savings while keeping our pets healthy. With advertising Sponsors renewing their support of Marple’s hometown magazine, and new Sponsors arriving at the party this month, I know you’ll enjoy this latest August issue of Marple Friends & Neighbors.

FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS
It’s hard to believe August is already here! I hope everyone had a fun Fourth of July. This year the Marple Newtown Fourth of July Committee came up with a great alternative to the parade so residents could still celebrate – in place. We are excited to feature some of the winners of the Red, White and YOU! Decorating contest in this issue, so you can hear how they came up with their creative ideas. This month, we introduce you to our Resident Feature Family, The Cannons. Katie and Pat are a hard-working couple who found a special home in Marple to raise their adorable children. In this issue you’ll also meet Steve Di Tomo, owner of Countywide Generators. With recent storms and power outages in our community, find out how whole-house generators are giving customers peace of mind when the power goes out. Our August Calendar has ideas on how to travel virtually or to learn about new people and places from the comforts of your own home. I hope you enjoy these last weeks of summer!

Garage Floor Coatings
A
popular new trend is happening now with homeowners: doing decorative coatings and epoxy floor coatings on their garage floors. These coatings add value to your home and allow you to have a clean beautiful surface on your garage floor that is not only decorative but prevents oil spills and provides slip resistance and many other benefits. There are many options out there for epoxy floor coatings, so you must choose wisely! Some coatings are not meant for heavy vehicular traffic. You’ll be disappointed when you put your vehicle on the wrong coating and the weight causes some of the coating to pop off. Because there are SO many different options for epoxy coatings for a garage floor, here are some questions you need to ask prior to putting ANY coating on ANY garage floor: 1. Is there a vapor barrier down? (If not, moisture from under the floor will most likely make your coating fail.) 2. Are there years of oil trapped in the concrete surface? 3. Are there water issues underneath the surface? Most of the above situations can be remedied but they need to be remedied with the right coatings in place. So, when you’re getting estimates for a garage floor coating job, getting answers to those three questions above will be very helpful to ensure success for the life of your garage floor coating.
Here are some other questions you should ask a contractor when considering a project like this: 1. Will a vapor barrier be put down? If not, what primer will be used to hold back any water? (If no vapor barrier will be used, 100% solids coating should be used or your coating will fail.) 2. Will a 2-part epoxy be used? (2-part epoxies are the best and should be used.) 3. How many coats will be applied? (At least three coats should be used.) Always make sure there is an anti-slip aggregate in the final coat. These floor surfaces can be very slippery when wet, and people could slip and injure themselves. A car can even sometimes slide on these surfaces! What’s known in the industry as “a flake system” is highly recommended because it has proven to be so durable. It’s also now the most popular because it comes in many different colors and options. Doing a little bit of “homework” before you get estimates and proceed with a garage floor coating project will be time well spent if you want results that will be attractive, safe and durable for many years to come. s n o i t a l u C ongrat August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month Hope Noonan Photo courtesy of Hope Noonan
We’re pleased to announce that the August Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Saint Anastasia School’s rising 8th grader Hope Noonan! To celebrate this recognition, Hope received a Certificate of Achievement and looks forward to enjoying her award: a “Pizza Bowl” party courtesy of Sproul Lanes, our Sponsor of this program. Hope has found several ways to use her time and talents to serve others. Sometimes that requires Hope to step out of her comfort zone and try something she’s not sure she’ll be good at. An example of such a learning experience is when as a 7th-grader, she played basketball for the first time, on her school’s basketball team. As a team player, Hope learned how to work with others to accomplish goals. Through repeated encouragement from her coach and teammates (who soon become her new friends), she learned that playing her part on the team was important even when she missed attempts to score points. And during a field trip to the U.S. Supreme Court with her coach and teammates, she also learned that, as she expected, there really IS a supremely huge basketball court in that famous landmark! Another way Hope serves others is by sharing her beautiful singing voice in theatrical and other performances. Last summer, she participated in Media Theater’s Vocalist Junior Competition, and in March, she had a small singing part in MNHS’s production of Cinderella. As Hope continues to develop her talents through vocal lessons and this summer’s Upper Darby Summer Stage program (online), she expects her future will include the performing arts. Her motto is “Don’t give up. There’s no good reason to!” All your Friends & Neighbors in the Marple Newtown community congratulate you on this award, Hope, and we wish you well in your last year at St. Annie’s and wherever life takes you after that!

Marple Township’s Fire Police: Helping Ensure a Safe Community Written by Holly Stupak
Photos courtesy of Marple Fire Police
The Fire Police are vital to public safety. In Marple Township, the Fire Police work closely with the Marple Township Police (MTPD) and Broomall Fire Company (BFC) when special calls come in and also during parades, functions, fairs and other special events. The primary responsibility of the Fire Police is to ensure a safe and unobstructed area for firefighters, rescue personnel and emergency vehicles, and to provide spectator and crowd control. We spoke with BFC Chief Tom Dobbins as well as some of the Fire Police volunteers, to find out more about their unit.

Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together
Why does Marple Township have a Fire Police Unit? The BFC Fire Police Unit was developed as a specialized group that helps coordinate automobile and pedestrian traffic in and around an active fire or law enforcement emergency scene. The BFC is fortunate to have a unit like the Fire Police as their main objective is to create a safe working environment around an incident, helping to protect not only our firefighters and other first responders, but the general public as well. Fire Police personnel are sworn public safety officers by Marple Township and work hand in hand with the BFC and our mutual aid partners, including working closely with law enforcement, and are often called upon to assist outside of the township, around the region, with various types of incidents and events. The BFC covers a large area as the single fire/rescue resource including a vast stretch of limited-access highways, often requiring the services of traffic safety personnel, for which our fire police unit fulfills that need. Who is in charge of the Fire Police and what's their responsibilities? Fire Police Captain Al Bianchi’s responsibilities are to coordinate Fire Police activities at any incident. The challenge is to ensure the safety for all the first responders and the public. With limited volunteers who serve as Fire Police, this can often be challenging.
NOW OPEN How do Broomall residents come to know the work and service of the Fire Police? When the BFC responds to emergency calls, they’re often accompanied by the Fire Police. The uniformed Fire Police are very visible, and they help keep the scene safe when motorists or pedestrians traverse through the scene. Unfortunately, the public usually learns about our service when there is an emergency. But by staying calm and professional while helping people in an emergency situation, the Fire Police form a bond with the public. Why do people volunteer to serve in the Fire Police? The volunteers join the Fire Police when they want to give back to the community and help support the Fire Company. For example, over the past 12 years, Fire Police volunteer Gordon Egan has responded to more than 2,000 calls, and his service has been a great way for him to stay active by helping and meeting people and serving the Marple Township community. Another Fire Police volunteer, Tony Cavarocchi, said that by serving, he has found a sense of self worth and accomplishment while sustaining commitment to family and community.

Anyone over 21 years of age can email recruitment@bfc53.com or visit the Broomall Fire Company’s website at www.BroomallFireCompany.com or for more information. It’s important to note that a Fire Police Officer’s demeanor, professionalism and appearance are what the public see and reflect directly on the department as well as on the entire fire company. The Cannon Family:
Family, Work and Fun Written by Holly Stupak

Katie and Pat Cannon
I
n 2003, Brownie’s 23 East in Ardmore (now The Ardmore Music Hall) was a popular hangout spot for local college students, especially on Wednesdays for their “Sink or Swim” theme nights. Katie (Leimbach) Cannon was a senior at St. Joseph’s University back then, and she and her friends spent many Wednesday nights there, taking advantage of the $5 cover charge to listen to popular live bands. Pat Cannon was a Villanova junior then, and he and his college friends were also regulars at Brownie’s on Wednesday nights. So it was only a matter of time before he would meet Katie there. They did, and the two hit it off. They dated for seven years and were married in June 2010 at her parents' church, St. Vincent de Paul in Richboro, PA. Katie grew up in Bucks County with her parents and two brothers. In 2000, she graduated from Villa Joseph Marie High School in Holland, PA. When she was deciding on where to go for college, she knew she wanted to stay close to home and she wanted a good business school. “I chose St. Joe’s because of its reputation as a great business school,” said Katie. “And I liked the community that it offered as a Catholic university, with an emphasis on community service. It was a great environment and I fit in very well there.” During college, she also caught the travel bug and studied abroad twice, spending a summer in Greece and later a whole semester in Ireland. Katie enjoyed studying marketing and found a great internship at The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau. She worked with the Director of Marketing Programs, and was given the opportunity to write some stories, including one on the Philadelphia Zoo Balloon, which

had just debuted. After she graduated with her BS in Marketing in 2004, she began working at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) in Philadelphia. She was working on an MBA at St. Joe’s when she decided to change course and instead pursue an MS in Arts Administration at Drexel University. While working full-time at CHF, Katie took classes at night and earned her Master’s in 2008. She then went on to work in Fundraising/Development at the Main Line Art Center. While she enjoyed fundraising, she ultimately returned to the marketing field, finding a great opportunity at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where she has worked for 12 years, and now serves as the Senior Marketing & Communications Manager. Although Katie didn't study art, she says working among the beautiful works of art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a dream come true. “I’ve always loved traveling and visiting cultural sites,” said Katie. “It's great to have a job where I’m able to ‘sell’ something I find exciting.”
Marple Friends & Neighbors / Bringing People Together
Patrick (“Pat”) is a Delaware County native who grew up in Wallingford with his parents, five sisters, and three brothers. He graduated from the Haverford School where he played basketball for four years. Similar to Katie, Pat wanted to go to a college fairly close to home that offered a good marketing program. He went on to earn a BS in Marketing at Villanova in 2005, and worked as a copier salesman for six years after he graduated. What Pat enjoyed most about Villanova was the school spirit and the class sizes that made it easy to connect with the faculty. Pat’s natural ease and ability to talk with people led him to jobs in sales. He now works as an Area Sales Manager for Rubbermaid Commercial Products, which manufactures innovative solution-based products for commercial and institutional markets worldwide. “I like my job because I enjoy meeting new people and working with new companies on a regular basis,” said Pat. “I also knew I didn’t want to be in an office all day. I like getting to travel and having a flexible schedule.” Although he’s been working from home these past few months due to the pandemic, he typically travels 3 to 4 times a week and his territory brings him to Philadelphia, Harrisburg, other parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. When Katie and Pat were first married, they lived in Ardmore, where they loved being able to walk to shops and restaurants and get into the city easily. But after they had children, they realized they needed more space than what their twin home offered. Their Ardmore home sold in just three days, so they needed to find a new house quickly. With a lot of Pat’s family

The Cannons have three children: Charlotte, Will and Gracie, all with their own unique personalities. Charlotte, 7, will soon be a 2nd-grader at St. Anastasia School. She’s a serious girl who loves dancing and takes tap, jazz, and ballet classes at From the Top Dance. She’s also a Daisy Girl Scout, and plays soccer for the Marple Newtown Soccer Association. A typical older sister, Charlotte likes to look out for her younger siblings. Will, 5, is very outgoing and is known as the “jokester” of the Cannon family. He attends Pre-K at St. Anastasia, where he’s known as a very outgoing classmate. And he loves sports, especially basketball and baseball. The youngest Cannon, Gracie, age 2, is described as a “wild child” who loves to play with the big kids. The Cannons also have a 10-year-old Beagle-Daschund mix, Murphy, whom they rescued from a shelter in Tennessee. Once a pretty rambunctious pup, he’s now more “chill “in his later years. And he’s gotten used to less attention since he’s no longer their only baby. The Cannon Family at Rose Tree Park
the house on her own and narrated to him as she toured it. Pat trusted Katie’s good judgment and they submitted their offer. They bonded with the owners, a couple from Ireland who built the home in the 1970s. Knowing how special the house was to the previous owners, the Cannons said they feel blessed to be the next family in the home. The neighborhood is filled with friendly families and lots of children for their children to play with.

One upgrade option that’s timeless and adds an upscale look to any bathroom is a frameless glass shower enclosure. This usually features a large glass door and panel(s) with very little hardware. It’s amazing how this chic design creates the illusion of a more spacious room! Besides looking very sleek, this type of shower enclosure provides many other benefits. Over time, the glass holds up well in function as well as style. Glass shower enclosures have fewer grooves and crevices, thus reducing soap and other buildup and making care and cleaning much easier. Real glass is easy to maintain and will really shine for a very long time. If you’re remodeling or upgrading a smaller bathroom, glass shower enclosures and mirrors can help to make the space seem and feel larger. The transparent glass in the shower allows for the space to extend beyond a typical shower curtain or door. A glass shower enclosure also makes the most of another common shower upgrade: tiling. The countless tile colors, patterns and designs available allow you to get really creative and even create a one-of-a-kind look. With a glass shower enclosure, you get to enjoy seeing the beautiful tiled shower walls. Mirrors also reflect those beautiful tiled walls while also creating an opened-up feeling in any size bathroom. For a modern look, consider installing a mirror with integrated lights. Large mirrors with a backsplash are also stylish and will help expand the feel of a smaller bathroom. Bathrooms can seem boring until you consider the many updates you can do. Remodeling and upgrade projects can be fun if they start with exploring the many design styles that will fit your budget. You and your family will get to enjoy your upgraded bathroom, and if done right, it will increase the market value of your home. A glass and mirrors professional can provide the information, advice and installation services necessary for you to design and create the bathroom you’ll love for a very long time. M

GENERATORS
Keeping Customers Generated, Not Frustrated Written by Holly Stupak Photos courtesy of Countywide Generators
S
teve Di Tomo, owner of Countywide Generators, LLC said there are two types of people: Those who have a generator and love it and those who don’t have one and get frustrated. Steve, a general contractor and licensed electrician, started Countywide Generators in 2018 after noticing an increasing need for whole-house generators. With changing weather patterns and outdated and overworked power grids leading to long power outages, his company’s motto has been Don’t get frustrated, get generated. Steve has been an electrician since 1973 when he joined the Air Force and learned electronics and electrical skills while working on fighter and cargo aircrafts. After his military service, he found a job working at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia, first as an electronics apprentice and eventually as a supervisor. When the Navy Yard closed in 1996 and Steve “retired,” he was deciding what to do next. “I was always taught: Do what you know!” he said, “so, I took electrical code courses at Delaware County Community College and got my electrical license in Philadelphia.”
COUNTYWIDE
GENERATORS
As an electrician, Steve had installed generators in homes over the years, but he wanted to gain more knowledge and make sure customers got the full advantage of owning a whole-house generator. Now more than ever, with people teleworking and

students learning online at home, a permanently installed generator gives homeowners peace of mind. Generators can create enough power to meet all electric needs (TV/WiFi, cooking, lighting, cooling, etc.), all at the same time. They’re wired into a home's electrical system and require minimal maintenance once the generator has been professionally installed. Countywide Generators installs generators from Generac, the industry leader. “When we get a Generac Generator, we get it right off the assembly line, so it’s brand new with all of the latest updates. Other generators from ‘big box’ stores may be older and more prone to issues,” said Steve. “Being connected to Generac’s mainframe allows us to quickly troubleshoot any issues and to keep up-to-date maintenance records. Having a dealer relationship with Generac opens a lot of doors for our customers. When we install your generator, you’re not alone; we deal with Generac directly so you don’t have to.” A Generac runs on natural gas or liquid propane (LP) fuel. It sits outside just like a central air-conditioning unit, delivering power directly to the home’s electrical system in the event of a power outage. Customers can also use a Mobile Link™ app with any Generac generator. The app allows customers to monitor the status of their generator on a phone, tablet or computer from anywhere in the world.
GENERATORS
A whole-house generator brings peace of mind, especially in homes that run medical equipment 24/7," said Steve. He explained that many people think they can't afford a generator and therefore must endure power outages caused by storms or downed power lines. When they learn that the monthly cost can be spread out over many years due to many flexible financing options, they realize what a sensible and practical decision it is.

Steve and his team of professionals meet warranty conditions, ensure safe and proper operation, and provide emergency assistance 7 days a week. During power outages, these reliable systems start up automatically, supplying electricity until the local power utility restores service. “If a customer has any
issues, we dispatch technicians quickly,” said Steve, “and our team is equipped to resolve most repairs right then and there, even if the customer is not home.” Countywide Generators’ staff includes Office Manager Michelle Saraceni, Worksite Foreman Marciano Capuzzi, Electrician Keith Grantland, Internet Coordinator Louis Di Tomo and Installer Valentin Flores. Michelle has worked with Steve for 20 years, and she handles everything from payroll to paying bills. She also monitors their customers’ generators online. As soon as there is an issue, Michelle gets an alert, and one of their technicians is sent out to do any repairs. “Twenty years ago, I didn’t know anything about construction or electrical work,” said Michelle, “but I’ve learned a lot over the years from the crew. And I’ve really loved getting to know our customers, who are more like friends.” “When something goes right, we’re all good,” added Steve, “but if something goes wrong, Michelle is the one keeping us all in line.” Countywide Generators is located in Broomall, where Steve has been a resident for 15 years. In addition to owning Countywide Generators, Steve is also the owner of STD Construction and also works as a general contractor in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. When he’s not working, he enjoys fishing and golfing and spending time with his children and 12 grandchildren. Everyone has seen the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, the Christmas classic starring Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, the dreamer whose life events direct him away from his first choices and into service of others in his hometown as he never imagined, that is until his guardian angel Clarence shows up, to show George what his hometown would be if he had never lived. It’s A Wonderful Life brings joyful tears when Christmas spirit combines with hometown pride. We see the good people of Bedford Falls come to George’s rescue when he finds himself at risk of losing his business over financial problems he never caused. When George understands how his life has impacted so many, and what his hometown would be like if he never lived, he perseveres, and then the magic happens. The residents of Bedford Falls rally to bail out George Bailey. The movie ends with a toast: To my big brother George, the richest man in town. It’s wonderful. Life is wonderful. Even during pandemic times, life in Marple Township is wonderful. And we also have many
good business people who make Marple a better place to live. But some of our local businesses are at risk of closing if customers don’t return soon. These months of pandemic and stay-and-shelter measures have kept business doors closed, kept foot traffic down, and kept loyal customers away for good reasons of health safety. But it’s time, Marple! It’s time to now rally to the rescue of our hometown businesses at risk because so much of their business revenues have been reduced in these times. We have to do something. The good people of Bedford Falls did it. So can the good people of Marple Township. It’s time for Guardian Angels to show up at the doors of our local Marple Newtown businesses. Look through the pages of this magazine. Pick a few advertising Sponsors you can Sponsor, not just to thank them for making our hometown magazine possible, but for making our hometown better all these years. Now is when these businesses need us. Right now. Don’t wait. Be their Guardian Angel. Don’t just buy local, buy now! And don’t just spend money, spend time. Tell our local business leaders to hang in and to persevere. Let them know Broomall is better with their doors open and show them you mean it by giving them your business. It surely is a wonderful life. And making it better can be as simple as this: This month, buy something from an advertiser you see in these pages. Each one has made a difference in our community by Bringing People Together over the past two years through their sponsorship of our hometown, and of our hometown magazine. Each one has sponsored us. It’s time now for us to Sponsor them. M

switches, outlets and lights, any of which can fail at any time, and seemingly for no apparent reason. You may have one light in a group that simply doesn’t come on. The dimmer switch for a chandelier doesn’t dim the light anymore. The exterior light on the front door will not turn off. The sump pump trips the breaker or pops a fuse. Sometimes the switch or outlet makes a sizzling sound. Sometimes the plug doesn’t fit tightly into the wall socket. Sometimes it seems like half of the house doesn’t have power. All these situations can be puzzling, frustrating and concerning to homeowners.
GremlinS in Your Electrical System?
I
n your home, are you experiencing blinking or dimming lights? Are circuit breakers tripping? Is something electrical not working the “normal” way or as you should expect it to? When a storm is approaching, the lights in your home may flicker, blink or dim. Many times, the power nearby has gone out and, even if your power stays on, your lights may flicker or dim. There are other causes for why your lights dim or blink, such as surges in your electrical system from appliances and equipment inside your home like refrigerators, sump pumps, hair dryers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners and heating and AC systems. Occasional events are somewhat normal. However, persistent and consistent dimming and blinking can be a signal that trouble might be brewing in your home’s electrical system. Common causes for a circuit breaker to trip or a fuse to blow are hair dryers running when too many lights are on. This frequently happens in older homes, particularly when there’s more than one hair dryer being used. When the outlet for the holiday lights turns off, this can be due to an overload or faulty lights. When using the vacuum and the lights go out, there’s likely to be an overload on the circuit. Power tools used in combination with lights can trigger the same result. When the microwave oven and the coffee pot operate at the same time, the kitchen outlets can all lose power. What was working yesterday may not work today. The electrical system in your home is a spider web maze of wires, boxes,
The electrical systems in our homes are, for the most part, safe and reliable, but they can be quite complicated. When the conditions described above present themselves, calling on a licensed professional electrical contractor to investigate can make a difference in keeping you, your family and your home safe, comfortable and secure. Our Community Residents Celebrate in Place with The Red, White and YOU! Decorating Contest:
Congratulations to All Winners! Written by Holly Stupak
Although the coronavirus pandemic may have rained on this year’s Marple Newtown Fourth of July Parade, patriotic spirit was still alive and well in our community. Thanks to this year’s parade committee, Broomall and Newtown Square residents were able to Celebrate in Place, showing off their community pride, patriotism and creativity in The Red, White and YOU! Decorating Contest. “In May, the Parade Committee made the tough decision to cancel this year’s parade, to protect the safety of our community,“ said Merrie Staurowsky, Vice-Chair of the Marple Newtown 4th of July Committee. “But we knew we could find another way to celebrate.” They decided to form a subcommittee made up of residents Merrie and Bill Staurowsky, Annemarie Sudall, Leigh Ann

Coary, Mary Jo Hamilton, Jill Dennis and Joe Talento. The subcommittee met via Zoom and also 6-feet apart on back patios, to brainstorm ideas for the community to celebrate — from home. The idea behind The Red, White and YOU! Decorating Contest was that if people could not come to a parade, then a parade would come to them. Jan Ceton, who has been the Parade Committee Chair for 35 years, was impressed with how successful the contest was. “After this year’s parade had to be cancelled, the Committee quickly formed a subcommittee that came up with a great alternative. And they really pulled it off!” There were a total of 59 entries: 38 from Broomall, 21 from Newtown Square and 7 local businesses (from both townships). Judging was done July 1–3, and on the 4th of July, winners were greeted by a caravan of judges, complete with Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty and a congratulatory lawn sign. All entries received a participation certificate.

But this year, they stepped it up, and turned to Pinterest for some fun ideas. “We’ve been living in Broomall since 1996 and have never missed a parade,” said Tony. “The contest was a great outlet for us and something we really needed to do!” James Cook and Karen Travis drew a lot of attention with their display that earned them the Most Patriotic award. Karen had a collection of decorations from her previous home in Havertown, and James, as the Commandant of the 884 Marine Corps League in Upper Darby, was able to obtain 300 flags that covered their lawn to complete their patriotic entry. “All weekend, we had neighbors and members of the community stopping by to take pictures and look at the display, making for some great shared moments,” James said. “We want to thank the committee for coming up with the idea for the contest and making it so much fun, especially when they came over by brigade to give us our award. I am so proud to be an American!”

Road Trip Tips
By Beth Dunphy
Family road trips have become a staple in our family. We enjoy driving through multiple states and finding places to explore.
into a smaller bag! Spare yourself and create those little snack bags ahead of time.
For some people, the idea of being “trapped” in a car with their family seems daunting. How in the world do you keep them occupied and not on a screen? How do you dole out snacks and drinks so that you aren’t stopping every 10 minutes looking for a bathroom? How do you make things fun and exciting so they actually WANT to ride in a car for multiple hours?
We also limit their liquid intake, filling water bottles during our pitstops and after they’ve had some time to “release” some liquid. Cars can tend to be dry places for multiple hours, so staying hydrated with just plain old water works best for us.
Based on my years of experience, here are a few foolproof ideas to help your road trip go smoothly:
1. PLAN, PLAN AND PLAN SOME MORE
In addition to our destination, we plan for multiple stops along the way. Some of our road trips are only three hours; some are over 20 hours. Looking ahead at the major cities along your route will help you plan pitstops for everyone to get out and stretch their legs. We often play in parks or hike around nature preserves. Designating these stops makes the journey more manageable. Instead of focusing only on the endpoint, you’ll have mini-goals to reach these locations.
2. “CAN I HAVE A SNACK?”
On a family road trip, the MOST asked question is about food. These little people can consume more snacks in a few hours than I care to think about. Do I want them eating all day long in the car? No. Does it keep them occupied and happy? Yes! BRING ON THE SNACKS! I like having a combination of healthy options and “slightly not as healthy” options. Easy things like trail mix, crackers and fruit pouches are great options. I always have a “Mary Poppins” bag of snacks in pre-portioned packages near my seat. That way, I can easily reach in and grab something if someone needs (or wants) a snack. Simple fruits or veggies (like grapes and carrots) can easily be stored in snack bags and sent back, one bag at a time. In a moving car, the last thing you want is to pour trail mix

3. “MOM, I’M BORED…”
We absolutely allow for some tablet games and the trusty DVD player in our van, but for a solid 10-hour-plus trip, these would rot their little brains. Simple things – like dollar-store coloring books, books to read or car scavenger hunts – go a long way. We look for license plates from different states. We play the ABC game where we take turns finding something outside our windows that starts with each letter. This passes the time quickly. For our road trip to Disney, we even got a muffin tin and put different colors of Playdough in it so they could “bake cupcakes.” The mess stayed in the tin, and they had a blast creating cooking shows. Many popular board games have travel versions, so we usually stock up on those, and the kids take turns playing with each other.

4. CELEBRATE SMALL VICTORIES
For us, the best thing about road trips is all the different states we get to see. Our kids know that, whenever we’re welcomed by a new state sign, mom takes a picture and we get to celebrate! I started this years ago with the kids by having a “Smarty party” every time we crossed a state border. Each kid got a little package of sugar candies. Then, we cranked the music and danced our way into a new state! As they’ve gotten older, I now wrap up small trinkets that I found months beforehand. When we get another state closer to our destination, each of them gets a little “gift”. It might be a small Lego set, a journal, new markers, a stuffed animal, or something else on the cheap. Keeping it simple is best – especially when you cross multiple states. Just having something NEW to occupy them every couple hours has been a lifesaver!
5. STAY POSITIVE
I get it: road trips can be stressful. Everyone packed into the same vehicle for hours can be challenging. Keeping a positive perspective (about things like traffic, bad weather or vehicle mishaps) goes a long way. Your kids will likely pick up on your attitude and mirror whatever you’re putting out there. Remind yourself (and the kids) that it’s all part of this road trip’s story. Laugh about it whenever possible! Control what you can control, and don’t stress over the things you can’t. If you plan ahead – and arm yourself with enough snacks and activities – your trip will provide enough family memories for a lifetime. As the adage goes, “You can always make more money, but you CAN’T always make more memories.” So, get out there and explore! M

Your Pet & Fleas: Myths & Facts
P
et owners everywhere dread fleas, the pesky little critters that make life unbearable for their pet. A severe infestation can make their owners’ lives unbearable as fleas are not fussy as to whom they bite! There’s a lot of misinformation, misunderstandings and myths about fleas. Here’s a short guide to understanding flea control. MYTH: Fleas are only a problem during the warm months of spring and summer. FACT: Fleas are most active in the warm weather but can live year-round indoors. Warm, stable indoor temperatures make continual breeding possible.
MYTH: A flea or two is not a problem. FACT: Adult fleas you see account for just a small percentage of the potential population in your home. More than 90% are still in the immature stages (eggs, larvae, and pupae) and pose a growing threat. A single pair of fleas can produce up to 500 offspring. MYTH: My pet does not go outside so it can’t get fleas. FACT: Indoor pets get fleas, too. They can enter through doors, windows, and screens, or hitch a ride on your shoes. MYTH: I applied flea treatment to my pet so all fleas will be killed. FACT: If your pet already has fleas, applying flea medication to your pet is Step 1 as it will kill only the adult fleas living on your pet. Step 2 is to treat your house as well as your pet: Kill the flea eggs and larvae on your floors, linens and furniture. Vacuum or wash all surfaces where your pet lays. Step 3 is continue to vacuum and wash surfaces weekly and treat your pet for at least three months to break the long lifecycle of fleas that can lie dormant in carpets or fabric.

MYTH: Only one pet is itchy so I only need to treat the itchy one. FACT: All pets in the house need to be treated, even those that don’t seem itchy because eggs and larvae may be present. Check for “flea dirt” (round, black flecks that are actually flea feces). MYTH: All flea treatments are the same. FACT: Unfortunately, there are many over-the-counter flea products and collars that don’t work or are harmful to your pet. Buy from your vet’s office to get the best product. It may cost more but your pet and house will be safe from fleas. MYTH: Fleas are a nuisance but not dangerous. FACT: Left untreated, fleas could lead to a range of potentially serious health risks for your pet, including tapeworm, anemia, allergies, and various infections. History Spotlight
Quakers and Abolition Written by Doug Humes
I
’ve spent days searching for records of slaves in Marple and Newtown townships, from the first census in 1790 until 1860, the last census before the Civil War. There was one slave reported in the 1790 census for Newtown. By the next census in 1800, there were no slaves in Newtown. That is the only slave that appears in either township for that time period. Why was that? Beginning in the 1680s, Marple and Newtown were settled by Quakers. Their religion, Quakerism, born in the 1650s, was relatively young, and Quaker thinkers were still exploring what it meant to be Quaker. In 1688, six years after Pennsylvania was founded, Quakers in Germantown presented a petition urging their local meeting to support the abolition of slavery. That was the first protest against black slavery made by a religious body in the English colonies. Generations of Quakers continued the assault on the “peculiar institution” of slavery. They pressured their members to free their slaves, and also worked to eliminate the importing and sale of slaves. In 1775, Quakers led the charge in founding the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, the first in the country. The legislature, responding to pressure for change, passed the Gradual Abolition Act in 1780, providing that any child of a slave mother born after that time was free; prohibiting the import of slaves into the state; and placing registration requirements on slave owners. Failure to register resulted in freedom for the slaves. The law was revolutionary: the first time in human history that a democratic government took affirmative steps to abolish slavery, which had existed in the world since the Biblical age and beyond. That law did not immediately eliminate all slavery in Pennsylvania. In 1840, there were still 64 people held in bondage; a law passed in 1847 finally freed

the rest. But the Quakers in Pennsylvania remained active: The Underground Railroad was largely a Quaker initiative in Pennsylvania, and Quakers continued to exert pressure for change on the national level.

Small populations of free blacks lived in Marple and Newtown during those years, most in family units. They were small farmers and laborers, like their Quaker neighbors. In Marple, the black community formed its own AME church. As a tightknit agrarian community, people of goodwill in those churches and meeting houses continued to pray for change by day, and at night, they worked together to speed the flow on the
