What Are Those Ugly Black Streaks on My Roof (And How to Remove Them)

W

hat are those ugly black streaks on my roof?

Although these dark spots and ugly black streaks on your roof may look like dirt, mildew, soot or mold, what they really are is algae. The most common type is known as gloeocapsa magma — also known as blue green algae. This algae growth usually begins as small spots and then eventually becomes visible streaks. By the time this algae is noticed by the homeowner, it has usually been on the roof at least two months.

Why Do Shingles Get Algae?

Algae spores are airborne. They can be carried by wind, animals and even on your clothing. Because these spores are airborne, they can quickly spread from rooftop to rooftop in a neighborhood.

This is also true for townhomes, condos and apartment complexes.

Roof algae seems to be more common today than it was 20 years ago. Traditionally, asphalt shingles got their name from being made up of mainly asphalt — an oil-based product — and felt

material. To save money, most shingle manufacturers have switched to shingles containing asphalt but mostly made up of fillers such as fiberglass and crushed limestone, which encourages the growth of algae. These algae use the crushed limestone filler as their main food source.

Is This Harmful to the Roof?

Absolutely! This algae feeds off the lime on the roof, causing it to deteriorate. You can reduce the 20-year roof life in half if you don’t maintain it.

How Can I Remove It? You should never power wash an asphalt roof. If a contractor suggests doing that they do not know what they are doing. A qualified contractor has special low-pressure cleaning machines to ensure no damage to your roof. You must maintain your roof to ensure its lifespan and keep your property looking great. M

ike Old Mother Hubbard, Springfield farmer William Dickinson and wife Louisa had so many children, 11, that they didn’t know what to do. They bought a newly subdivided farm of 48 acres in Marple in 1855, and built a three-story stone and stucco farmhouse. There were no fireplaces inside, so it was of relatively modern construction for the times, heated by a coal furnace, with grates in the floors to let the heat rise. Five rooms upstairs were adequate to house the large farm family. There was a homemade “smokehouse” on the 3rd floor, where the clever farmer had boxed out a closet and cut a hole into the chimney to let the furnace exhaust “smoke” meat hanging on hooks.

An orchard ran from the front door to the road frontage on today’s Sproul road. Milk cows grazed in the fields of what is now “the Avenues” – 1st thru 5th streets, watered by Langford Run. A well outside the back door was a convenient water supply for cooking and bathing needs. A privy at the corner of the home also served as a trash dump, until public trash pickup came along. The dump was “discovered” just a few years ago when digging a hole for a post to re-hang the ancient grapevine on the property.

Dickinson had a barn and a springhouse – the latter now a home on Harding Avenue, behind the old Marple Ambulance building. Dickinson had training as a wheelwright, and so when not working the farm, he could be found amidst the wheelwright and blacksmith tools at the Drove Tavern on the Pike.

He was a civic-minded man as well, serving on the school committee five times.

When William died in 1888, his 9th child, Maurice, took over the farm, and cared for the widow Louisa until her death in 1905. He and wife Anna raised a much smaller family of two, Josephine and William, but both died relatively young, and so by the time Maurice was ready to retire in the mid 1920s, there were no takers for the farm. They sold it to developer Michael

Gilbert in 1923, and it was subdivided into small lots to accommodate vacation bungalows for city residents to hop on the West Chester trolley and escape to the country. And the farmhouse? Still there, at 1st and Gilbert, occupied by the author!

ony and Stelle Cincotta first met in Margate, New Jersey. It was the late 1950s, when families from all over the northeast found their way to the Jersey shore every summer. Tony grew up in Maryland and Stelle in PA, but their beach houses were only two blocks apart.

“We met on the beach in Margate,” Stelle explained. “I was 13, the summer before I entered high school, and Tony was entering college. I was probably in love with some 14-year-old at the time, but that’s when we met.”

That’s how the summers would go: Shed the winter coats, your classes, your neighborhood back home, and reunite with your beach house, the salt in the air and your summer friends. After years of enjoying summers together, the two became close and the friendship grew.

Tony was drafted into the army, and after serving his country, he reunited with Stelle and they started dating. He graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in May of 1963, and by December they were married.

Tony was interning at a hospital in Philadelphia at the time, and Stelle was teaching business courses at Gwynedd Mercy College. They wanted to find a place that was equal distance to both jobs, and the map placed them in Broomall. That internship wouldn’t last much longer, but what was potentially a temporary living situation became their lifelong community.

So their lifetime home was built: Four bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen, two treatment rooms, a patient waiting room and Tony’s office. It would be the home where they raised 8 children and ran a medical practice.

At 25 and 29, Stelle and Tony were excited to start their careers and build their family together. In the next 13 years, they had 8 children, all of whom were boys.

“Eight kids just happened like that,” Stelle laughed. “It’s funny because people would think we were trying to have that one girl, but by the end, I honestly was hoping for boys so it wouldn’t mess up the bedroom situation.”

Mike was their first child, then Drew, John, Joe, Dave, Bill, Paul and Jim. Many sons now have wives and children, and some even live across the country. But they often return to the house where they grew up, and where the Cincotta family began.

It was a classic childhood full of laughs and adventures in their community. By the time John entered kindergarten, he insisted on riding his bike to school with his friend down the street. Every son enjoyed and thrived in Little League baseball, and some excelled in sports like football, ice hockey and rugby. Drew was offered a football scholarship. Mike was ice hockey team captain at West Chester University. And many of the other boys played high school and college sports.

“They played every sport out there, and they were good at them,” Stelle recalled. “They were always active. The hardest part was keeping the fridge stocked. Not kidding, one day we went through four gallons of milk.”

Having eight sons came with challenges and adventures. In addition to sports, the Cincotta boys also love music, something passed down from their parents.

Tony, always a music fan, still plays trumpet in the same 16-piece band he’s played with since the ’80s. Stelle was in an hour-long music and comedy act called A Couple of Swells. They performed in local nursing homes and also venues as big as Valley Forge Music Fair.

One day when Jim was 8 and home from school sick, Stelle’s band had an afternoon perfomance scheduled at a nursing home. Unsure of how to perform there while also caring for Jim, Stelle decided to take him with her. He had started guitar lessons, so they brought his guitar along. Little did Jim know he’d be invited on stage in the middle of the performance. He played Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore.

“After Jim finished his song, the crowd cheered and he had the biggest smile,” Stelle said. “The seniors loved it, and I could see on his face how special it was for him. Every day after that, he asked if I had a show that afternoon. If I said yes, he would say, ‘You know what, I should probably join you.’”

Music and performance ran in the family, with nearly every son also playing music into adulthood. Jim, Joe and Bill currently play in a classic rock cover band called Third Man In, with an avid fan base at the local bars. Tony often joins them on stage with his trumpet, thrilled to be performing with his sons.

After the boys grew up, Tony continued with his Newtown Square medical practice, Suburban Primary Care. Stelle found MORE children to inspire: She served as a substitute teacher at St. Anastasia School for many years. Only recently have Tony and Stelle stopped working and now enjoyed retirement activities.

Many of the Cincotta boys now have wives and children, and it can be hard to get the entire family together. Drew, Joe, Jim and Bill live locally and get together to watch the Phillies or practice their music. Mike and Dave live in New Jersey and get to visit often. Dave, who is now a sergeant in the Longport Police Department, married Lauren from New Jersey. Mike and Joe also married Jersey girls, Kim and Antoinette. Jim married Colleen, Drew married Christie, John married Pat, and Paul married Hillary.

With each new daughter-in-law, the Cincottas just feel like their family is growing. “I hear people with horror stories about daughters-in-law,” Stelle laughs. “I don’t get it! I adore all of them. If your son finds somebody he loves, and that wonderful person loves him back, it’s just a beautiful thing.”

John and Paul, who live in San Diego, usually come back about once a year, when all the brothers and all their children pack into a beach house down the shore. Just like when Stelle and Tony first met on the beach in Margate, something about beach towns in the summer brings the Cincottas together. continued on page 8

Stelle and Tony are nearing their 56th wedding anniversary.

After all these years, eight children, and over a dozen grandchildren, there are many wonderful stories to look back on.

“Unless you have a big family, you can’t understand it,” Stelle explained. “When people hear that I had eight boys, they say ‘God bless you,’ and I say ‘Thank you. He did.’”

In this one home in Marple, Stelle and Tony were able to run a medical practice for 30 years and raise 8 children. Their home holds a lifetime of memories for the entire family. Some of those happy memories are of kids running through the hallways, patients laughing in the waiting room, and old etch marks on the wall with stories to tell. Now with grandchildren running through the same hallways, the Cincottas are continually grateful to have found their forever home in Marple. M

The Bringing People Together Event of The Year Is Coming Next Month, Thanks to Sponsors

ark your calendars for the event of the year in Marple Township. Thousands will again come out next month to celebrate America’s birthday along the route of The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade. My family and I never miss it. And like so many, we have a favorite spot along West Chester Pike to cheer and celebrate America and hometown pride.

The Marple Newtown 4th of July Parade starts at 10am on, of course, July 4th. Come out early to get energized by cheering for the runners and walkers who participate in The Broomall Rotary’s Firecracker 5K, which precedes the parade using westbound lanes of West Chester Pike. While the Firecracker 5K is a more recent addition to the parade, The Broomall Rotary has been hosting community events since 1961, to fund local charitable service projects and scholarships. “I was always drawn to it,” Dimitri stated energetically. “I love when it gets busy and everyone hustles. We get to joke around and have fun together.”

This business has always felt like an extension of home for Dimitri. Throughout his childhood, he always helped out in the pizza shop his father, Alexios Mylonas, owned. Eventually, Dimitri became an employee there. He also spent several years working for his Uncle Gus, who owned a nearby pizza shop.

“Uncle Gus influenced me a lot. He had a strong work ethic and always brought in a positive attitude,” Dimitri explained. “He taught me a lot about quality and how to treat people – not just your customers, but your employees too.”

Dimitri’s grandfather couldn’t speak much English, and their traveling expenses left him with very little money. But he did have a vision, and as soon as he arrived in the Newtown Square area in the late 1960’s, he began working hard to set his children up for success. He helped them start their own businesses and continued to support them until they started to see the fruits of their labors.

The determined work ethic that passed down through the generations is clearly present at Newtown Square Pizza. Every employee is friendly and focused, with a steadfast commitment to the customer. There’s laughter around the store as people are constantly cooking up something by the pizza ovens or the grill, or having a conversation with the customers. Even new employees quickly feel like part of the family.

“We’re a small mom-and-pop shop. We try to treat everyone like family,” Dimitri beamed. “I feel like the business has taken off since we started, and that takes a whole group of committed people.”

One customer shared online a story of Newtown Square Pizza’s exceptional service. Their order was delayed during the dinner rush one Friday night, potentially lost in the commotion around the store. The customer called the store back and explained the situation, now nearing the 7pm peak rush. Thirty minutes later, a manager from Newtown Square Pizza arrived at their door with their order in hand, insisting it be on the house.

“Yes, we occasionally make mistakes with our customers,” Dimitri explained. “A mistake is just an opportunity to go the extra mile to make things right. Instead of getting upset or feeling bad, we just do whatever we can do to make it right.

That is something I stress to all the employees here.”

Dimitri was eager to speak about each employee on his team and why they are so valued there. He started with Bill Cincotta, a long-time Newtown Square local who has worked for the company longer than Dimitri has owned it. “Bill always comes to work with a positive attitude and a sharp eye for detail,” Dimitri raved.

Steve Papadopoulos works there in a prep role. He has worked in the food industry for decades and has held every possible pizza job. Steve’s extensive experience is obvious and greatly valued. “As a 27-year-old trying to learn how to run this business,” Dimitri explained, “I was very lucky to have Steve to lean on. He was always there to listen and give advice. I’ve learned so much from him, more than I could ever repay him for.”

Stavros Hotz, who goes by Stav, started working for Newtown Square Pizza at age 21. Dimitri sees a lot of himself and his family in Stav, a young man who moved from Greece to America just two years ago, eager to learn everything he can to succeed.

“There was a time when Stav could barely cook a mozzarella stick,” Dimitri laughed. “But now, just a couple years later, he can run circles around everyone here.”

Dimitri makes it very clear that he not only appreciates his employees but sees a piece of himself in all of them. Only two generations removed from his father’s small village in Greece,

Dimitri has a strong determination to succeed in this business.

There were other options in his life: Dimitri’s parents even insisted he go to school for accounting and then use that degree to get a job with his cousin. But he knew that serving the Marple hometown community with quality pizza and exceptional customer service is in his blood. hen we lose a loved one, or a close family member or friend goes through the loss of someone close to them, it is important to participate in the celebration and commemoration of that person’s life. The following tips outline some basic etiquette to follow when attending a funeral service.

What to Say? When it comes to sharing words with the grieving, less is often more. It can be difficult to find the right words to say when one has lost a loved one. When speaking to the deceased’s relatives, be sure to focus on a fond memory or story. Try to avoid phrases such as “I am sorry for your loss,” or “They are in a better place now.” Instead, focus on the positives and express your support for them. Sometimes just being present and understanding can speak louder than a long-winded story.

What to Wear?

It does not have to be black; any dark color semi-formal attire is suitable. Be conservative. It’s polite to wear neutral colors to avoid possibly offending the grieving family.

Where Should I Sit? The first couple of rows are reserved for immediate family. You can fill in behind those rows. If you arrive late and the service has begun, it is polite to sit in the back rows to not disturb others mourning. If at a cemetery, there will most likely be a row of chairs. Those are reserved for immediate family.

What Not to Do? It is important to be respectful. Joking, talking and using your phone during the service is impolite. You should refrain from taking photos at the service or at the gravesite and wait until all the formal services have completed.

It can be difficult to attend a funeral service. The loss of a loved one or friend results in many heavy hearts and conversations.

Following these tips will help you know what to do during a difficult time and allow the grieving to focus on their family and appreciate the funeral service. M

Exterior Remodeling Ideas and Improving Curb Appeal

ost homeowners first consider updating or replacing the exterior of their home when the existing elements are aged and failing – roof leaks, rotted wood, drafty windows, etc. However, with the increasing popularity of home improvement reality TV such as HGTV’s Fixer Upper and Property Brothers, more homeowners are excited to update their home’s exterior, simply to add more curb appeal. Whether you HAVE TO or simply WANT TO replace your home’s exterior, here are a few ways to add curb appeal to your home.

Front Door – Replacing your front door is probably the simplest and most cost-effective way to add character to your home.

Door manufacturing has come a long way, with different colors and textures matched with energy efficient construction. Fiberglass doors are the most resilient to weather, and are available in infinite architectural designs.

Roofing – Mix materials and color to add dimension! Metal roofs are very popular, as are different style asphalt shingles, as well as natural materials such as slate and cedar. Older homes that once had cedar or slate are perfect for a restoration to bring them back to their original glory. Mid-century homes typically have asphalt shingles, but adding a metal accent roof is a great way to improve upon curb appeal.

Siding – Like roofing material, mixing materials (cedar impressions, board and batten) and colors, or opting for a more modern siding such as James Hardie cement board, are all good ways to maximize your home’s curb appeal. Adding curb appeal also raises the value of your property!

Windows – Installing new windows could be looked at as an investment, as most windows older than 15 to 20 years have insufficient glass and poor energy efficiency. There are a handful of manufacturers who produce top quality windows, coupling Low-Emissivity glass with aluminum, wood, or composite materials for superior performance and a clean, refreshing look.

Portico/Porch – Although the most drastic alteration to the facade, adding one of these architectural elements can transform the look of your home. They may also serve a purpose for increased living space, or simply provide cover when looking for your keys in the rain! Most homes have some variation of these, though a change in design or a remodel of the existing are a good way to showcase your home. M

W

hen you choose to spay your dog or cat, you are not only being a responsible owner, but you are protecting them from a dangerous medical condition. Spaying pets helps the pet overpopulation problem in our country and the needless euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals in shelters, and prevents them from developing a life-threatening condition called pyometra.

The word pyometra is comprised of the Latin roots “pyo” meaning pus and “metra” meaning uterus. In simple terms, the condition consists of an infected, or pus-filled, uterus. A large majority of pet owners are completely unaware of this often fatal disease that is all too common in dogs and cats.

The exact prevalence in the dog and cat population is unknown because most dogs and cats are spayed early in their lives nowadays but it is seen quite frequently at clinics. One study in 2001 showed 24% of the intact female dogs in the sample group developing pyometra by the age of 10 and another in 2010 was over 15% in females greater than 4 years of age.

As intact females get older, they become more at risk of developing pyometra. The only effective treatment for pyometra is an emergency ovariohysterectomy (spay) surgery. If you wait until your pet is sick to have them spayed, not only are you going to accrue thousands of dollars in medical bills (five to ten times that of a normal spay) but the infection can lead to further complications. Examples include septicemia (bacterial infection in the blood), shock, liver damage, damage to the heart muscle, kidney damage or failure, and death if not treated promptly.

The uterus can also rupture releasing pus into the abdomen leading to potentially fatal peritonitis (infection of the abdominal cavity).

When an animal is very sick and compromised from a condition such as pyometra, the surgery is much more involved and risky. Why not have the procedure performed at a young, healthy age when you can save money and decrease the potential risk and discomfort for your animal? Spaying completely prevents this disease from ever happening. Please be a responsible pet owner and do what’s right for your dogs and cats. Save your beloved pets from this horrible, potentially fatal disease by spaying your animals. They are counting on you. M
