Happy 10th Anniversary to the Spayed Club

Written by Mary Fischer

On June 1, 2009, the Spayed Club (TSC), a nonprofit organization, opened the doors to their Sharon Hill Veterinary clinic.

The mission of the clinic is to end euthanasia of healthy pets in the Greater Philadelphia area through affordable, high-quality veterinary care and spay/neuter. In addition, they provide education on the importance of spaying or neutering pets.

Dr. Sarah (Sally) Alexander, Lead Veterinarian and Donna Dybus, Clinic Director, have been with The Spayed Club since Day 1.

The Spayed Club is one of a number of area organizations dedicated to this goal. In 2012, Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT) reported euthanizing 11,906 healthy pets mostly due to homelessness. In 2018, ACCT reported euthanizing 2,296 healthy pets (1). Clearly, great strides have been made towards TSC’s goal, although there is still work to be done.

Presently, TSC provides veterinary care to more than 6,500 cats and dogs each year. The clinic is staffed by three dedicated & skilled veterinarians, each of whom has more than 20 years of experience. The clinic is open to the public so that everyone can take advantage of their quality veterinary care and affordable prices. Services offered run the gamut from basic wellness, treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, to surgeries including spay/neuter, soft tissue mass removal, and dog dental procedures.

Common reasons for pets being relinquished include having unwanted litters and medical issues, which the owner cannot afford to treat. TSC works to prevent unwanted litters of puppies & kittens from being born and makes preventive care and treatment within reach.

Because of their nonprofit status, TSC is able to raise monies through fundraising projects and grants, which are used to assist pets whose owners would not otherwise be able to afford veterinary care.

Join The Spayed Club in celebrating 10 years of progress in their goal of ending healthy pet euthanasia through affordable veterinary care and spay/neuter.
