We hope you enjoyed last month’s first edition of Marple Friends & Neighbors! We’re sure it’s been a whirlwind moving out of summer vacation mode and back into the swing of the school year. Having lived in the Marple Newtown community for nearly 25 years, I was not surprised to hear from so many, but did not expect the gratitude. Tire Pressure

T

ire pressure is something that, in theory, should be one of the simplest things to check and maintain on the car, but is often misunderstood. Drivers can easily put their own gas in their car, which is a flammable liquid, but are afraid or don’t know how to put air in their tires. In addition, the maintenance of tire pressure on a car can add years to a car’s life and improve the performance right away. With some simple tips, drivers can know how to understand their tires and maintain them correctly.

The first thing to learn is to stop looking at the side of the tire for the pressure. The info on the tire will only tell you about the maximum amount of pressure the tire can handle, which will not be applicable in the case of regular maintenance. Your car doesn’t weigh the max amount of weight the tire can carry so you’re not going to put in the max amount of pressure. The correct pressure is on the label at the drivers door jam. Some have a different pressure for front and rear. If the spare is the same pressure, make sure that is checked as well.

Tire pressure is also affected by temperature. If you check your tires when they are hot, add a few pounds to the recommended number. As the temperature drops in the fall, so does your tire pressure. Stay ahead of the temperature drop and add a few extra pounds to the tires.

If a driver is in a situation where the tire is losing air and needs to be refilled often, there is most likely a leak that will need to be fixed. In that case, a driver should send their car in to a mechanic.

Most new cars have tire pressure monitor systems, so if the light isn’t on, the tires are probably okay. Keep your eye on this meter and follow the above instructions to give an initial monitor and maintain what you can on your own. A driver should be able to maintain and understand their tires, keep the tires inflated correctly, and only send in to the shop when they detect a leak. M

A Tale of Two Cities Marple and Marple Written by Doug Humes

W

here did the name “Marple” come from? From the same place as the first European settlers: Marple, England. The English town exists today, a small town nine miles southeast of the industrial city of Manchester. It appears in early English records variously as Merphull, Merpill and Merpol. The name derives from “maere pill” meaning “the stream at the boundary.”

The manor house that was most prominent in the English town was Marple Hall, the ancestral home of the Bradshaws and Isherwoods from 1600 until its demolition in 1959.

Francis Stanfield left Marple and arrived in 1684 in Pennsylvania, and headed inland to settle the 550 acres that he purchased from William Penn. (Stanfield later sold 300 acres to Thomas Massey, one of his servants who had emigrated with him.)

Stanfield suggested the name Marple, a reminder of his home town. The eastern border of his lands was the Great Road of Marple, today’s Springfield Road. If you come up the hill on Lawrence Road and proceed straight through the light, you would be on his land. The western boundary of his land, and of the township, is Crum Creek. The lots to the east of the Great Road bordered on the eastern boundary of the township, Darby Creek.

How fitting of it’s English name - “the stream at the boundary” – so accurately describes its namesake in America!

att and Liz Lain first connected over their Marple roots when they met at Penn State as undergrad students. Liz was introduced to Matt by a mutual friend who had no connection to Marple and just thought they would be a good match together. Over the course of that first night, with a party in full swing around them, Matt and Liz began sharing their stories.

Matt moved to the Marple area when he was in third grade, attending St. Anastasia grade school. Liz was quick to jump in saying that she also attended St. Anastasia. Matt then said that he went to Cardinal O’Hara High School, and Liz laughed and said that she went there too. Over the course of the day that they met as juniors and sophomores in college, Matt and Liz were able to place each other in the same town and the same schools nearly their entire lives before that night. It was pretty clear to both that it wasn’t an ordinary conversation, but a meeting that was a decade in the making.

The pair began dating shortly after that first night, and stayed together the rest of their college career. After graduating from Penn State, Matt took his engineering degree and began working for Wawa as an industrial engineer. He has continued to work for Wawa ever since, and is now a manager of operations. His job is something he takes a large amount of pride in.

“It makes you feel good to see people at barbecues and tell them you work for a company like Wawa. People’s eyes light up,” Matt said.

Liz graduated from Penn State with a degree in psychology and went on to get her master’s in speech pathology. She now stays at home with her young children, but intends on returning to her career once her children become older.

Matt proposed to Liz as she was still pursuing her master’s degree. While they were engaged, the pair purchased a home in Marple. It was a fixer-upper, so Matt and Liz were working together on the house while starting their careers.

“We may have been putting a lot on ourselves at the time,” Liz said. “I had multiple internships and a job, and I was preparing a wedding.”

Matt added “Yeah, but we were both just so ready to start our lives together. The wedding was fun, but we were more excited about our life after.”

The two began working on their new home together, and after the wedding their lives began to pick up speed. When the conversation turned to their children, both Matt and Liz began talking excitedly and had a list of what’s unique to each child.

Matthew, 12 years old, is their oldest child. He looks and acts just like Matt, which has its benefits and costs. Just like Matt, Matthew is a master builder, loves creating and reassembling things and understanding how everything around the house works. This can be humorously dangerous for the family when they discover all of their small appliances and the childrens’ toys are taken apart to the individual pieces.

“I should probably be mad at my son and tell him to stop, and I do sometimes,” Matt said. “But I always end up smiling because I did the exact same thing when I was his age.”

Matt and Liz built a family the same way they built their home: one piece at a time, and each piece with love.

Will, 9 years old, is the fun of the family. “A fireball,” as Liz phrased it. He is passionate about everything he does, most often including sports. He plays for Little League, soccer, flag football and basketball. If you were to ask him his favorite, you would get a different answer every week.

Abby, 7 years old, is the princess of the family. First-born daughter, with excess love that she is always eager to give to

others. Anyone in the house could find a love letter from Abby at any point in time, and random toys could be wrapped up as gifts and handed back to you by Abby with a letter attached.

Becca, 2 years old, is fiercely independent. Anything you can do, she can do better. If Matt is doing work around the house and looks to his left or right, he will most likely see Becca Continued on page 8

helping him or trying to do the work for him. She will do the handy work helping Matt and Matthew build and fix around the house, or she will be rolling up laundry and handing it to Liz. Her go-to catch phrase is, fittingly, “me do!”

The newest addition to the family, Nathanial, is only 4 months old. With so many different personalities around the house, Matt and Liz are eager to see how Nathanial grows and finds his role in the family. As of now, he can be described as chill, and wakes up laughing.

Matt and Liz built a family the same way they built their home: one piece at a time, and each piece with love.

Earlier this year, the Lains were ready to move out of their fixer-upper and finally move on, which they had intended to do years ago. It was always meant to be temporary, but with each child there were more rooms added and more renovations made, and they were always happy there. The papers were nearly signed and the moving company was nearly called, and Matt stood in the middle of his living room taking stock. He looked atthe etches in the wall where his children tracked their height, from half a foot to five feet. He looked at the scuffs in the floor from years of children running and playing. He looked at the smooth paint and thought of Liz tearing layers of wallpaper off after coming home from her internships. Just like how their stories began years before they met, this house and this community have become entirely a piece of their family, an important element of every memory, without them realizing it.

Pints in the Square is an annual 5K and beer festival in Newtown Square, returning September 22. We had the privilege to speak to Rick Thompson, co-founder of Pints in the Square and owner of Thompson Painting Company, to discuss this event.

What is the origin of this event?

A few years ago, I was with my neighbors watching the Eagles game on a Sunday. A few weeks before, I had been at a beer festival and loved the experience, and pitched to my friends the idea of bringing one to our own town. My wife Bridget is a runner and loved the idea of including a 5K to start the day, and we agreed that the two worlds went together.

When is the event?

Pints in the Square will happen September 22. The 5K begins at 11am, and the brew fest will be from 12 - 4pm.

What is the most rewarding part about Pints in the Square?

In our first year, we had about 500 people at the festival and were able to donate $25,000 to the fire company. They have a lot of employees and a lot of equipment and really appreciate the support.

Where is it located?

It will be on the Ellis Preserve in Newtown Square.

Is there an age restriction?

There is no age restriction for the 5K, but in order to go to the beer festival, you must be 21 years or older.

How do I get tickets or sign up for the 5K? You can register for tickets at www.PintsInTheSquare.com.

The tickets can either be for both the brew fest and the 5K, or either.

What do you like about having the event in your community?

The generosity of the community partners has been huge for us. Steve Spaeder and Neil Gallagher from EQUUS were very generous at the beginning to donate Ellis Preserve to be the site, which was a huge hurdle and was instrumental in making this happen.

I like the people of Marple, it’s a good town with great people.

We are very happy to bring something fun and use it to support the community. Beer, food, a 5K, it really is something for everyone.

earing the 100th anniversary of the company, O’Donnell Roofing has experienced a long history of change, growth, and adaptation. The history of O’Donnell Roofing spans four generations of the O’Donnell family line.

In the first generation, a roof could cost $28 and a repair could cost $.60. For a time, the company was called ‘C.A. O’Donnell II’ with no mention of roofing. C.A. was Kevin’s great grandfather, Clement Aloysius O’Donnell. Clement started the company in West Philadelphia in 1924, and would provide a number of services to the community. Instead of focusing only on roofing, C.A. O’Donnell II would service coal burners in the winter when the demand for roofing quieted down. He owned a metalwork shop that would provide materials needed for roofing and heating work; at the time an in-house production facility was feasible. There were no box-stores down the street to provide the materials needed to put a roof and gutters on a house.

The industry has changed drastically and so has the service line, but the O’Donnell name still stands strong in the Marple community. The family business has combined innovation with adaptation to remain relevant and hold on to the traditional local charm that started 94 years ago.

Kevin O’Donnell has overseen the company since 2012 when his father, Lawrence, stepped away from high-level management. Under Lawrence’s influence, the company expanded and changed, moving into different roofing product lines and customer types. He moved into restoration and custom roofs, including slate, cedar, metal, and copper work. He became the premier standard for custom metal and restoration roofing in the area and was even hired to restore the R5 Line Train Station roofs.

“He is now a consultant for a lot of companies because of his experience,” Kevin said, “He is one of the best in the area and in his field.”

Lawrence started with the company at 19 years old, and by 29 he had assumed the head role from his father, Kevin’s grandfather.

Kevin and his father Lawrence had always been close, going down to the shore at Ventnor every weekend. Kevin savored the chance to spend time with his dad when he was younger.

He attributes his time working with his father from age 12 as a huge part of his work ethic.

“I was a determined, young kid,” Kevin said. “Whatever I did, it was entrepreneurial.”

Whether it was selling baseball cards at school or working at a pizza shop at 16, Kevin loved to work and to earn something he could call his own. After graduating from Haverford High School, Kevin went to college in Vermont under a work study program and kept himself busy running a deli while taking classes. The lifestyle was fun and fast; Kevin was happy to say he went snowboarding in Burlington 140 days out of the year while he was there. With that said, it wasn’t home and it wasn’t what Kevin really wanted to do.

“I realized up there what I was always destined to do,” Kevin explained.

After four years in Vermont, in the early 2000s, Kevin returned home from college and began working for his father again.

“I was surrounded by 30 year olds but I didn’t care. My whole philosophy was ‘show me once, and I’ll do it,’” Kevin said proudly of his younger self.

With that work ethic, Kevin quickly rose in the ranks and took every opportunity he could to prove himself. The next big thing in industry advancement was solar panels, and under his father’s direction, the company quickly studied and became certified in installing solar panels. Although the product didn’t advance as quickly as they intended, there are still many commercial and residential clients that request the technology.

O’Donnell Roofing was proud to once again adapt and stay current on all of the new technologies so they could respond to the possible needs of their clients.

In the past ten years, Kevin has taken over the company and focused on growth. He dove head first into the business side.

Lawrence stepped aside after leading the company for over 30 years, but still helped Kevin by maintaining clients and enforcing the customer service and work ethic that O’Donnell Roofing has always represented. By 2012, Kevin had taken the lead of the company and began growing rapidly.

The crew has grown from five employees in 2008 to 25 now, and Kevin makes it a priority to treat every employee with time and respect.

“They rely on me for work every day… and I worked hard to build these relationships and honor that,” Kevin said.

In the past five years, Kevin expanded the company to servicing commercial clients. This is a new branch of work in addition to the residential clients that he has nurtured since starting the company, but he marks it as one of the first innovations he can claim as his own. growth of the company under his management have been something he takes pride in and focuses time, effort, and resources on building.

Nearing 100 years, O’Donnell Roofing is now working in Marple with a number of clients and roofing products, and may look entirely different on the surface from its beginning.

Beyond surface-level, this new company looks and feels just like the one-man project in 1924 that installed coal burners to provide heat to their clients in the winter. Innovation and a strong desire to learn has been constant over the past 100 years, and is the heart of a company that has lasted four generations of the O’Donnell family. M

est Chester Pike is a busy, four-lane state highway, a part of Pennsylvania Route 3. It runs for roughly 20 miles and connects the city of Philadelphia with the borough of West Chester. From east to west, it passes through Delaware County and the municipalities of Millbourne, Upper Darby, Haverford, Marple, Newtown, and Edgmont. The route then crosses into Chester County and the municipalities of Willistown, Westtown, East Goshen, and West Goshen.

It is easy to forget, however, that modern-day West Chester Pike cuts through a former wilderness area once inhabited by the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware Indians, prior to the arrival of Swedish, Dutch, and English settlers in the 1600s. The only “roads” prior to this, most likely, were Indian trails.

The area began to change in 1681, when King Charles II of England settled a debt with the family of William Penn by signing the Charter of Pennsylvania, which granted Penn the territory of Pennsylvania. Penn, an English Quaker, began selling land grants to other Quaker settlers.

Meanwhile, roads during this early colonial period served mainly to connect Quakers with the various “Friends,” or Quaker meetinghouses, in the area. Transportation along what was to become the West Chester Road developed slowly over the years.

Between 1793 and 1850, the route was a dirt road used by horse-drawn carriages and wagons. In early 1848, however, farmers & mill owners called for state legislation to create a better road on which to move products to market.

The Philadelphia and West Chester Turnpike Road Company was organized in March 1848 to build a toll road, or turnpike, from the William Penn Hotel at Thirty-eighth and Market Streets in Philadelphia to Newtown Square, about half the distance to West Chester. The road was one of several built in Delaware County in the 1840s to improve farming and manufacturing businesses in the county.

Between 1850 and 1868, the route became a plank road. By 1868, stone began to be used to pave sections of the roadway. By 1885, stone was used all the way to Newtown Square, but the road remained dirt between Newtown Square and West Chester.

In 1895, the Philadelphia & West Chester Traction Company opened a trolley line from Sixty-third Street in Philadelphia to Newtown Square using steam dummies. In 1896, electric trolley car service to Newtown Square began. By late 1898, trolley car service to West Chester was completed. Trolley service to Ardmore via West Chester Pike and Darby Road in Haverford Township was added in 1902.

In 1907, the Sixty-ninth Street Terminal, a transportation hub connecting Philadelphia with emerging western communities, was built in Upper Darby. These events along West Chester Pike brought increasing development to communities west of the city, gradually changing the landscape from rural to suburban. In 1918, the route became a state highway. A trolley line ran up and down the south side of West Chester Pike between 1898 and 1954. The West Chester trolley line ceased regular operations in June 1954. Trolley cars were replaced by buses. Limited trolley service continued during peak travel hours until 1958. Trolley service to Ardmore via West Chester Pike stopped in 1966. The late 1950s and 1960s saw the length of West Chester Pike widened from two to four lanes.

as fireplaces first came about as an alternative to woodburning fireplaces, not as a means to replace them.

However, gas fireplaces have become increasingly popular as convenience has become a major factor for consumers. While gas fireplaces cannot mimic the natural crackling and popping attributes of a wood-burning fireplace, a gas fireplace provides an easier, safer, and cleaner way to enjoy a fire.

The first element of a fire is the kindling, which must be gathered and then lit. Next comes positioning the logs on the grate and waiting for them to catch fire from the kindling. Most people do not want to get involved in that process and this is why a lot of wood burning fireplaces sit dormant.

Though there may be a general belief that gas fireplaces don’t compare to wood-burning in terms of appearance, that isn’t always true. Gas fireplaces offer a level of ambiance and realism comparable to wood. The hand-painted ceramic logs give an authentic feel of real wood and with the amber glow it looks as if they are actually on fire. In fact, some gas fireplaces have been known to be mistaken for wood burning fireplaces.

Gas fireplaces also offer more heat output and flexibility than burning wood. Most gas fireplaces produce a warm radiant heat, like the heat from a wood burning fireplace but more of it. Some gas fireplaces can even supplement the normal house heat of a home. The temperature and flame appearance can easily be adjusted as well. Instantly increase or decrease the flame height to keep the room at a comfortable temperature, while still enjoying the ambiance and atmosphere created from the gas fire. Also, gas fireplaces open up the doors to endless

possibilities and styles. Whether a home is traditional, contemporary or an in-between transitional décor, there is a gas fireplace to compliment any style. Even if a home does not have an existing wood fireplace, a gas fireplace can easily be added since no chimney is required.

Lastly, gas fires burn clean. They do not give off smoke, require an annual chimney cleaning or leave behind ashes to sweep up like wood burning fireplaces. Most gas fireplaces have remote options to control temperatures and set timers. Best of all, there is no waiting for the flames to die down. The simple push of a button on a remote or wall switch turns the fireplace off.

So the next time you are about to go outside and collect logs to start your fire, think about all the advantages a gas fireplace gives you. Chopping wood and gathering kindling will become a thing of the past. M

A Local Star Living in Our Community

Rich Paul The History Hugger Written By Craig Whitney

R

ich Paul has spent his whole life in Marple after moving at 9 years old. In that time he has volunteered as a historian, fought for the preservation of historic buildings and structures in Delaware County and spent four years in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He is our local star because of his commitment to the history of our town and his service to our country.

Rich first served as part of the U.S. Navy in 1962 and spent four years traveling around the Pacific Islands. He spent time along the coasts of Japan, China, the Philippines and Vietnam, while also studying electrical design as part of the Navy program.

In 1966, after traveling through all of Asia and the Pacific Ocean, Rich returned to Pennsylvania and soon met his wife, Pat, at a dance at Drexelbrook Ballroom. After one year of dating, they got married and soon moved to a home in Marple together. They will be celebrating their 50th anniversary soon and look forward to many more years together.

After returning home and settling down with his wife in Marple, Rich found a job at Xerox as they were beginning to expand in the Philadelphia area. As the company expanded over the course of thirty years, new locations opened and Rich was moved all around the county. Despite the change and the movement, Rich was always committed to the job and worked with the same company for 35 years until his retirement in 2004. Alongside him, Rich's wife Pat worked as a library aide in the Marple Newtown School system until 1995 when she became an administrative assistant and worked in that position until she retired in 2006.

It was at his retirement that Rich’s community service and pursuit of passions truly began. Rich and his family had always had a passion for history, specifically small town history. Rich’s oldest child John Paul, now an adult, had volunteered at the historical society while in high school. His oldest daughter, Kate, now lives in Saint Augustine, Florida, which can claim the proud historical fact that it is the oldest city in North America. In addition, Rich and his wife love to take road trips, specifically so they can stop at old small towns along the way and learn their history.

One day after retiring, when some people would take the first cruise to the Caribbean, Rich volunteered at the same historical society his son had volunteered with years before. It was at this organization that Rich was able to study the history of Marple and Delaware County as a whole.

Over the past 14 years, Rich has researched the origin stories of the

towns and the families of the 1600s and 1700s, guided tours of historical buildings to school groups and tourists, and built arguments for the preservation of historical buildings. Like her husband, Pat very soon after her retirement in 2006 volunteered at the Delaware County Literacy Council teaching an adult reading program, which she still does to this day. She also volunteers as the teacher for some of the Massey House school children programs and does tours of the house in the summer season.

Rich and his wife both believe whole-heartedly in the importance of studying the past. “I think it’s very important that we understand our history, because it is what made us,” Rich said. “We have evolved from it, where we came from, where we lived. These things impact our lives, and form our history.”

When asked about a particular piece of Marple history that Rich is fond of, he told the story of Thomas Massey.

Massey came to America in 1683 after being born and raised in Marpoole, England, to work as an indentured servant for Francis Stanfield.

After successfully serving his indentured servitude, Massey was given 100 acres and eventually bought an additional 200 acres on what is now considered Lawrence Park. His original home is still preserved as it was 300 years ago, and Rich works hard to maintain accuracy of the house and guide tours to school groups, families and tourists.

“We should preserve some of the things we have,” Rich explained. He used the example of a modern orchestra performing Mozart to a crowded theater.

“We enjoy [Mozart], though the man himself died centuries ago, so we work to preserve his art. We should do the same thing to the structures and buildings of important historical moments. They are reminders of our past, and add character to our communities.”
