But just as quickly as the seasons change, so do the trends. With so many colors and styles, sometimes it’s difficult to choose which is best for us.

It’s time to say goodbye to sun-kissed tones and aim for crisp autumn hair color and styles instead. Ask your stylist about shadow roots - a trend that allows you to embrace your root color by blending it into your highlights. This will allow for a natural fade from your summer color.

However, it’s not just about the shampoo. History Spotlight

Indian Traces in Marple Written by Doug Humes

T

he early settlers in Marple in the late 1600’s were Quakers from England, who arrived to an area of virgin forest, and what they considered the frontier. That attitude would come as a surprise to the Leni Lenape, who had inhabited the area for over 10,000 years and adapted to the land and the available resources. The English settlers arrived with a much different system of “English” values: private ownership of property, fixed houses, raising domestic animals, and daily life in a family rather than a more communal society. The Indians readily traded away land for trinkets and manufactured goods, the likes of which they had never seen.

The most deadly thing that the English settlers brought were not guns, metal blades, or alcohol, but microbes – the diseases of Europe for which the Indians had no defense. By the time the Quakers arrived in Marple, this work had largely been done. The local population of Indians had already been decimated. Traces of them remain – largely in the ground and stream beds – the tools and weapons that look

like rocks to the untrained eye. In 1941, a more significant discovery was made along Langford Run, when local men searching for arrowheads found the grave of what was later identified as an Indian woman. A nearby site also contained early English trade goods. In a less politically correct time, the skeleton was exhibited in the display case at the Marple Library. Our Indian Princess of Marple has since been re-interred with more dignity in a cemetery outside of Allentown.

E

d and Amy Stasen first moved to Marple in 2010, and have built their lives around a love for each other, the family they continue to raise and the neighborhood community they are proud to call their own.

Ed and Amy first met at a wedding in October of 2001. The pair was surrounded by Lehigh University alumni, including Amy and Ed. Though the two had gone to Lehigh University the same year and were pursuing the same major, they were meeting here for the first time. Amy’s sorority sister was marrying Ed’s fraternity brother, so two worlds that existed so close to each other were intertwining in that moment.

“We connected right away because we have very similar personalities,” Ed said. “We’re both analytical and we like order and structure.”

In 2005, the pair got married at the Chapel at Lehigh University.

They have three boys, Chris, Michael, and Alex, and each one brings something unique to the family.

Chris is the oldest, soon to be 12. According to Ed, Chris is an old soul, well-spoken and mature for his age. He is very self-motivated to learn, reading books on World War II strategy and history in his spare time.

Michael is 10. Amy considers him a teddy bear, sweet and inquisitive. When the family took a trip hiking through the 6

woods this summer, Michael pointed out trees, bugs, birds and more, each one with a fact he has learned from a book or from a nature trip he has taken with his school.

The youngest is Alex, 7 years old. He is charismatic and cute, sometimes he knows this too well. According to Ed, he can tend to be overconfident and eager to be on the right side of an argument despite the logic. It could be his own way of making order out of disorder, something that seems to run in the family.

Order and disorder come together in many different ways in their lives. Ed works as a municipal advisor for banks and hedge funds, finding the order in a disorderly amount of options. It’s a job Ed takes a lot of pride in, not only because of his passion for it but because it is something he created and pitched to his company before making his idea into a financial success.

Amy works as a manager of business operations for Accenture, a job she loves because of the organization and logic behind it. She manages the productivity and efficiency of the ecosystem products section of the company, managing fiscal plans and maintaining order for the year.

Ed was asked to describe Amy, and the first thing he thought of was ‘rule follower.’ She will get the kids to church every Sunday morning despite the kicking and screaming. She will

accomplish every goal she writes on her list for the day. And most of all, she will have the right tupperware for any meal.

“Tupperware is very important to her,” Ed said. “I can’t let her go the Container Store anymore, we literally have boxes for our boxes.”

Amy was quick to respond to this statement.

“The thing is, when you live with all males, things will never end up back where they belong. It’s pretty simple, there’s a home for this thing, just bring it back home!”

The conversation got playfully heated when discussing tupperware, but Amy also had a long list of things she loves about Ed. “The first thing that comes to mind is what a great dad he is,” Amy said. “When you have babies as the mom, you are so busy nursing them and the dads sometimes don’t have anything they can do. As soon as the boys started to walk, though, Ed took them and nurtured them in so many ways.

In every way, he lives the father role.”

The Stasen children play in many sports, and Ed makes it a point to support them in any way he can. He coaches the soccer and wrestling teams that his sons play in, and likes to motivate them to learn new skills and apply themselves in new ways.

As busy as their lives get, Ed and Amy still try to take time out for just themselves. On their tenth anniversary, Ed and Amy went on a group vacation with some of their friends to Las Vegas. On one of the first days, Ed sent Amy out with her girlfriends to go shopping on the Vegas strip.

“He had me go out shopping in Vegas with my girlfriends, which of course I loved and didn’t think anything of,” Amy said.

While shopping, Amy pointed out some pieces of jewelry she liked, including a ring, and her friend took note. Ed got the tip later and went back to that store and bought the same ring.

Later that night, while the whole friend group was out for dinner on the Vegas strip, Ed re-proposed all over again, getting on one knee and taking out the same ring she had remembered pointing out earlier that day.

The next day, in front of their friends in the neon glow of a Vegas chapel, Ed and Amy stood with Elvis and got married all over again.

“We don’t always do things like that,” Amy said, “but Ed managed to dial in a year’s worth of romance into one weekend.”

Disorder can show up in life in countless ways: a financial plan for the fiscal year, a group of neighbors who don’t know each other yet or three children who don’t want to go to church on Sunday morning. Every time, the Stasens have always had a knack for taking the disorder and finding order in it, and in the end bringing all the pieces together in a way that is familiar and comforting.

Ed and Amy have raised their children in the Marple community for eight years, and are excited to see how their lives continue to grow and change with their town.

Detective Barry Williams: Protecting our Community

B

arry Williams served as a police officer in Marple Township for 30 years, and in that time he served 25 years as a detective. In September, Detective Williams retired from the force and will be the Director of School Safety at Marple Newtown High School.

Detective Williams has many memories of his time on the force, both the good and bad that comes with his profession.

“Looking back now, I can laugh harder than I’ve ever laughed,” said Detective Williams. “The memories are social and they’re on the job, some of them are funny and others burn deep into your soul. But that’s all what makes for such a tight bond between these guys.”

anti-bullying policy. He knows the problem can never be removed completely, but it will be the mission of his department to limit this as much as possible, not just through enforcement but through education.

Detective Williams first joined the force when he was 21, inspired by his father who was also a police officer for Marple Township.

“We stress to the kids to think before you speak, and to hesitate that extra second before posting on social media,” Williams said.

“My father is my hero and my idol, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Williams said.

After working five years in the force, Williams became a detective and worked in that position for 25 years. In that time, he made friendships that would become a brotherhood with his fellow police officers.

Starting in September, Williams became the Director of School Safety for Marple Newtown High School. After all of the tragedy that has occured in schools around the country, Williams was eager to help protect his community and his former high school.

“I heard that the position was being created and wanted to be a part of it,” Williams explained. “Marple Newtown was ahead of the curve with this position, you’ll see this job in many, if not all school districts soon enough because of what is happening in the world today.”

With this new position, Williams already has plans set up for this position. The first step is to educate and enforce a strong

“Our primary mission will be to make sure our kids, our staff, and our faculty feel that it’s a safe environment, and that everyone feels comfortable coming to school on a daily basis,” Williams said.

In addition, Williams is happy that he gets to continue working with the close friends he has made in the Marple township police force. As his position will still be one of authority in Marple township, there will be regular communication and collaboration with the police force that he is retiring from.

Williams is very proud to continue serving and protecting the Marple community. A graduate of Marple Newtown High School, he feels honored to return in a position that will help keep the school safe in a time where school safety is more important than ever. M

Giving Back to the Community

The Rotary Club of Broomall, currently headed by president Leslie Stack, is an organization that has worked diligently in our community and around the world to cure diseases, help the environment, and provide for those in need. Some people may not recognize the name, but they will recognize the events that are held throughout the year to benefit the local community and important global issues such as disease and water quality, as well as simple acts of kindness around the community.

“We get to meet members of the community that, through no fault of their own, are in unfortunate situations and are in need,” Rick explained. “It’s a great feeling to be able to help them, especially around the holidays.”

The organization is roughly 35 members, most of them prominent business leaders in the community. Through the organization, the members get to know each other better and become more ingrained in the community.

“It helps us reach out to our fellow neighbors, and we get to build friendship and comradery with the other members of the Rotary Club, local and worldwide,” Rick said.

The Rotary Club is a global organization that, through the help of a 2-to-1 match contribution from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has been able to raise over $1 billion toward eradicating Polio.

Rick elaborated on the commiment and dedication of his fellow members, though he himself has contributed to the club regularly for over 20 years. One member, he noted, is currently 93 years old and hasn’t missed a meeting in 62 years. Another pair of members just returned from a trip to Liberia, where they worked with a team of doctors, nurses and volunteers to provide treatment for cleft palate.

“We raise money to give it away,” said a local member of the Rotary Club, Rick Flounders.

Each member has their own story on how they have done something incredibly helpful and kind for members of their community or to people all over the world. And in the process, they get to form true friendships with the other members and the people they help.

Rick Flounders has been a member for 23 years, first joining while running a local business. Rick was very interested in the idea of giving back to the community in creative ways while also getting to know the other members.

One of Rick’s favorite annual events is the Christmas sharing program. In this program, 20 local families are selected based on their needs and the members are assigned one person to give a gift and a Christmas dinner.

The Rotary Club conducts research with the local school districts to find families that are in financial need. They get information from the school on children’s ages, hobbies, interests, then each member in the club is responsible for selecting a gift for a child, with a budget of $100 per child.

The Rotary Club is always looking for new members. In order for an organization like this to continue to contribute to the community, they need the enthusiasm and support of their community. M

reddy’s is a young restaurant chain that, over the course of 16 years has grown from a single store in Kansas to over 300 stores across the country. The rapid growth has been built on a culture of customer service and the local store in Broomall has worked to excel in the field.

The Broomall location of Freddy’s is a DiMarco family operation in many ways. Jaden DiMarco is currently the general manager of the Broomall location, and much of his family is also involved in the company. Jaden’s father John is the regional manager for two locations, soon expanding to four, after being the original general manager of the Broomall location for several years. Jaden’s mother also works with the company, serving more as the community outreach manager in West Chester for their second location. In addition, Jaden’s uncle helps run the properties with services such as power washing the buildings and managing the landscaping.

The whole concept of owning and operating a restaurant chain originated with Jaden’s uncle Steve. Steve DiMarco works more in the financial investment side of the business, and was on a trip to Kansas to watch his daughter compete in a golf tournament when he heard of the business. In the early 2000’s, Freddy’s Steakburgers was a much smaller chain than it is now, and the flagship location in Kansas was a surprise to Steve. Upon walking in, each customer is treated like a welcome guest in someone’s home. Managers are walking around tables having conversation with the customers, the food is fast and fresh, and the tables are being cleaned every time someone gets up to leave. Steve was thoroughly impressed from the beginning.

Not only did John connect immediately with the concept of individual customer treatment, but he knew the perfect location to start the process in. John

has spent much of his life in the Marple Newtown community and has a deep connection to the families in all of the surrounding neighborhoods. In the 1960’s, John was an employee of a fast-food chain on Sproul Road that has gone through several transformations over the years. When it came time to pick a specific property to plant their first Freddy’s, that very same property was available and John took it as quickly as he could.

The identical location not only speaks to the coincidence of timing, but also of John’s belief and commitment to the Marple community that has stretched 50 years and was strong enough to invest the start of his business here.

Since opening the store in 2012, the DiMarcos have continued the company’s mission of serving each customer on an individual level. John made it a point to open the door for every customer that they could and make them feel welcome throughout the dining experience. As a general manager, John would personally walk through the lobby greeting customers, asking them about their experience and offering to clean up whenever possible. This philosophy earned the Dimarcos the Freddy’s Way Award for excellence from the Freddy’s organization, and is something each employee strives for.

“He works really hard at everything, you can feel it when you’re here,” Jaden said about his father. “I admire that, it’s nice to work closely with him after being his kid for my whole life.”

Jaden is now the general manager of the Broomall location, and will become the general manager of the new Lionville location when it opens. Jaden takes pride in the hard work he puts into serving customers and connecting with the employees he works with. He has instituted a new tradition in the Broomall location that serves seniors specifically, since he has noticed that there is a large number of seniors that visit his location on a regular basis. The program not only includes a discount for senior citizens, but employees are trained to assist with walkers when entering and finding seating.

The team at Freddy’s also makes a noted effort to support v eterans year-round, which stems from the original Freddy having served in the military before creating the first store in Kansas. Every week, there is a military discount of 15% off the entire purchase.

In addition, Freddy’s supports the VFW West Chester chapter and sponsors the Walk for the Wounded, which is organized

by Operation First Response. Beside these year-round deals and contributions, on Veteran’s Day all military personnel will be given a free meal.

Take a Bite Out of Autism

When: October 25, 6:30 - 10pm Where: The Barn at Liseter, 3710 Liseter Road, Newtown Square What: Take a Bite Out of Autism is a restaurant tasting and silent auction event held annually in support of the Timothy School. In addition to the signature dishes from local restaurants, there is an open bar with wine and beer.

Donors are encouraged to walk around the location, trying signature dishes from tables set up by local restaurants. Restaurants from previous years include Bonefish Grill, Margaret Kuo’s and Fleming’s Steakhouse. In addition, there is a silent auction that lasts through the whole event and winners will be announced at the end of the night.

An MC will be leading the night, as well as conducting a live fundraising effort with the audience called Teacher’s Wish List.

Speakers include the director of the school and the volunteer chair of this event.

Live entertainment includes a three-piece band that will be playing music throughout the event.

Who: The Timothy School is the oldest nonprofit school in Pennsylvania dedicated exclusively to the educational needs of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

The Timothy School first began in 1966 by the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, as a mission for children with autism.

Several parishioners had children with autism, and the church felt that there was a need for this kind of service within their church family. The school was built on the church grounds and served the local families, but as it grew in size it began welcoming students from all over the state. Today, 26 school districts are able to refer students if the diagnosis is too complicated for their internal program. There are currently 70 students enrolled at the Timothy School.

“Participation in Take A Bite Out of Autism 2018 helps provide much needed financial support for student services, program supplies and equipment,” said Gene Sirni, the current Development Director of the Timothy School. “Through the generous support of our guests, we are able each year to create a better experience for our students with autism here at The Timothy School.”

“The most rewarding part of working at the school is the children,” said Gene. “We get to see the children and interact on a daily basis. I get to see them grow and become more confident, and to eventually graduate.”

A Local Star Living in Our Community

M

aria Tucker is the president of the Marple Township Ambulance Corps, running training programs, managing operations and volunteering on the ambulance. Balancing family life, a full-time career in pharmaceuticals, and this significant part-time career has been a difficult experience that, to Maria, is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to help those in need.

Maria first got exposed to the Ambulance Corps when her son Nick pursued a cadet program for the Broomall Fire Company.

Despite living in Drexel Hill at the time, Maria got Nick to Broomall regularly as he spent more and more time around the fire house.

Nick officially became a firefighter for the Broomall Fire Company when he was 16, and soon the firehouse community opened additional volunteer opportunities for Maria Tucker and her family. Maria got introduced to the deputy chief of the fire company, who then suggested Maria volunteer with the ambulance corps. Before long, Maria was hooked on the concept of helping those in need and giving back to the community.

The program originated in 1949, when the town was mainly farmland and had 2,000 residents. For the past 70 years, the ambulances have been serving Marple Township communities 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day. It is a demanding job that requires EMT experience and a mixture of volunteers at a minimum of 24 hours per month and full-time employees who work 40 hours per week.

Maria was immediately attracted to the idea of helping the members of the community in desperate need. She attributed it to her experience caring for elderly members of her family in the past. Maria and her mother looked after her grandmother and her aunt the years before they passed away, and Maria felt immense compassion for those that don’t have that kind of support system when they get older.

“There’s a lot of older people that don’t have anybody,” Maria explained. “They have no one to be their advocate or take care of them.”

Many of the emergencies that the Ambulance Corps serves include elderly people that live alone, and through the volunteer hours she has served, she feels that she has been able to help people when they have no one else to help them.

Maria and her husband, Andy, volunteered with the Ambulance Corps for years while Nick continued to work as a firefighter.

After years of dedicated service to the program, Maria was promoted to president of the entire organization. Her responsibilities now include the implementation and management of programs such as CPR training for students and scouts.

Maria and Andy train students, cub scouts, boy scouts and girl scouts in hands-only CPR training, which Maria feels is a necessity in the community.

“Some states require students to get CPR training before they graduate high school,” Maria explained. “I think it should be national, everyone should know this skill.”

Being president of the Ambulance Corps is very demanding on Maria and her family. Despite her high position, it is still a part-time volunteering position and she has a full-time career in pharmaceuticals that still takes up the majority of her time.

The job may be demanding, but Maria eagerly explained that she loves the opportunity to help people in need.

“I love being able to give people the human dignity they deserve no matter what they are suffering through,” Maria said.

In addition, Maria was eager to give praise to the full-time employees she works with.

“This isn’t my career. I give credit to those who work day in and day out. They see more than I see, and they live this every day.”

Nick, newly 21, is now eligible to drive the firetruck, which is a large responsibility that he is very excited to work toward in the Broomall Fire Company. The Marple community looks forward to seeing more of Maria and her family as Nick’s responsibilities grow at the firehouse and Maria continues to work more for the ambulance corps.
