Welcome Friends & Neighbors of Marple Township, to the inaugural edition of Marple Friends & Neighbors magazine. As a resident of Marple Newtown for nearly 25 years, I’m honored that Best Version Media has asked me to serve as Publisher of Marple Township’s new monthly magazine in service to the residents and businesses of Marple.

Each month, Marple Friends & Neighbors will introduce you to Broomall residents you may already know. If not, you will by reading their cover story inside your hometown magazine filled with articles of interest and features written by local Expert Contributors.

This month, meet “The Conroy Family” on our cover and read their story inside the pages of our magazine. The Pros and Cons of Ductless Air Conditioning

Ductless air conditioning may be a valuable alternative when it comes to keeping cool for the summer. Opposed to the standard central air conditioning unit with large ducts installed through a home, a ductless system works independently to filter the air and move cool air through the house. For those considering whether they should get a ductless air conditioning unit or central air, this pros and cons list can be a valuable guide.

PROS Easy Installation Installation of these systems is much simpler than central air conditioning. Where central air requires fitting of large ducts around the house, ductless air conditioning is installed with thin refrigerant lines and takes a fraction of the time.

Long Life Ductless air conditioning can have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years with proper, regular maintenance. With the ductless design, there is a lower risk of gains in heat, air leaks or imbalance of pressure. This is the same estimated lifespan of a central air conditioning unit.

Energy-Efficient As mentioned above, there is a lower risk of air leaks and pressure imbalances, which increases the energy efficiency of this system. By simply removing the large, complicated duct system, a ductless system can increase efficiency by up to 30 percent.

Use of a ductless system can often include a better tax break.

Every air conditioning unit comes with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which dictates the tax breaks and additional costs. A central air unit will range from 10 to 15 in SEER rating, but because of the energy advantages, ductless systems range from 20 to 30.

CONS Appearance By the nature of the product, ductless systems have no duct to be framed in and are often installed onto the wall or on the ceiling. Based on personal preference, this may be seen as an intrusion to the room or out of place with the design. This may come to personal preference, and how you like the look and feel of your room. M

Marple Township History Spotlight

Marple Township was established in 1684 by English Quakers. Early land owners in modern-day Marple were Francis Stanfield, Jonathon Hayes and John Howell. Stanfield, whose daughter was born in Marpool, England, may have been responsible for naming the township.

Over the course of the last 300-plus years, Marple has evolved from a small, rural farming community to a thriving and diverse suburban community of approximately 25,000 residents.

Some of the historic buildings in the township remain and many have found new uses, such as the Maris House and the Culbertson House.

The Maris House, on West Chester Pike, just west of Sproul Road (Route 320) at Broomall Avenue, is shown here in a 2011 photo. The Maris family came from England in 1682 and settled in nearby Springfield. Family descendants later settled in Marple and built this fieldstone farmhouse on the north side of the roadway about 1800. It remained a private residence until the mid-20th century. It is the former site of Pancoast Gardens.

It now serves as an animal hospital.

The Culbertson House, also on West Chester Pike, a fieldstone farmhouse that stands just west of Malin Road near Harmil Road, was built by noted Quaker Jonathan Maris in 1750. It was purchased

by Robert Culbertson after the Civil War and remained in the Culbertson family until the early 20th Century. It now houses law and insurance offices.

D

an and Tara Conroy moved to Broomall as a young family in 2005, with a 1-year old and a 3-year old in tow. Over the years, they raised a family and built it around their community.

Dan and Tara first met in a supermarket, and after some persistence, Tara agreed to go on a first date. After several years of dating, the pair got married and began building their life together.

The Conroys chose to move to Marple because they felt it would be a great school district for their kids, Cooper and Kiersten. Not only would the school end up being a good fit for their children, but the town itself became a great resource for the family.

Tara graduated from Salisbury University and is currently a PACU nurse at Lankenau Hospital. When Tara isn’t working

or at home with her family, she enjoys going to yoga and loves to knit. Tara and Dan go to as many concerts as they can. Tara likes the music of Billy Joel, U2, and Springsteen. Dan enjoys some alternative artists such as Eminem, The Killers, and major music festivals like WoodStock 2 and Firefly. The family loves to vacation together during the summer in Ocean City and Wildwood Crest. During the winter months they love taking trips to the Poconos and skiing as much as they can. “That’s one great advantage of living where I do, the shore or the mountains are both only an hour and a half away from my home.”

Dan runs his own business, Conroy Landscaping, and has been busy lately doing a lot of outdoor lighting for customers. “It’s my new hobby and people have been really happy with the results, win/win.” Running his own business is a 24/7 operation, but it has helped to build his presence in the community. In

addition to owning his own business, Dan takes a lot of pride in coaching his son Cooper’s little league, lacrosse, and basketball teams.

Cooper is an all-around athlete, playing in sports such as basketball, lacrosse and football. Cooper plays Saturdays during the winter in the Marple Newtown Basketball Association. With his father Dan as his coach, their teams have won back-to-back championships and Coop loves to play the game. He also is very involved in lacrosse and hopes to play on many teams next year when he will be a freshman at Marple Newtown High school. Go Tigers!

Dan has taken a lot of pride in help ing coach many of Cooper’s teams.

First when he was playing soccer, and in recent years playing on multiple basketball teams. Dan has made it a point to make the games about the team and not about any individual.

Regardless of skill level, he feels every player deserves a chance to play and to be supported by their teammates.

“They should play these games to learn teamwork and

There were a number of exceptional starters to put in at a time like this, but Dan stayed with a bench player who was really playing hard. This player would normally sit and cheer for his teammates. a clutch three-pointer to win the game. It’s those moments that make Dan proud to be a coach. His teams could lose, but those little memories are the things the kids will hold on to forever.

Dan takes pride in the fact that Cooper will shovel snow out of their neighbors’ driveway with a smile on his face. They believe acts of generosity like that come from being raised in Broomall as much as it does their own family morals. “It truly takes a village to raise a child,” Dan says. “In Broomall, I feel safe.” The Conroy’s neighborhood is one built on respect. Each family has their own space, but the neighborhood will come together to extend a hand if necessary.

“I love the way that a person who lives blocks away from me is still my neighbor,” Dan explained. “One time my truck broke down and I explained to a gentleman that I lived in the August 2018

Seven years ago, the Conroys invested in home security by welcoming a dog into their family. Roxanne, known as Rox, is a Rottweiler and can bark all day long. She considers it her full-time job to keep her family safe and alert them if there is any commotion in their yard. Now a seven-year-old and fully grown, Rox may be large and loud but to her family she is a teddy bear.

Tara and Dan laugh about their family and reminiscing about all the years together. Like every family, they’ve had their share of good and bad days. Mostly they like to have fun and hang out together.

Their eldest child, Kiersten, is going into her junior year at Marple Newtown High School. She is involved in many afterschool activities and prides herself in being a piece of the Marple community. One of her real passions is helping others, with a unique interest in helping those with disabilities and special needs. In her busy schedule, Kiersten is also working hard in a parttime job at a hair salon. “She is working hard now and saving up to buy her first car,” Dan was quick to say with pride.

“She is pushing for a Jeep.”

“Our family is very happy when we can all sit home together and hang out. It’s tough with all the sports, activities and jobs we like to do. Our life isn’t perfect, but we are blessed to have some great friends, neighbors, and extended families who will always be there for us.” Dan jokes about his family, “We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.”

Dan and Tara will celebrate their 20th Anniversary this October and it looks like the happy couple will be celebrating many, many more happy years together. Having spent much of their marriage and raising their kids in Broomall, this town has left a special mark on their lives that they will cherish forever.

T

he only thing better than summer days are summer nights. We love that it’s warm enough to go camping and sit outside around the fire, laughing and enjoying fellowship with family and friends. Why not top off the night with one of these creative and easy campfire desserts? These creations are best made when the fire coals are smoldering and glowing.

Campfire Banana Boats

Black Forest Skillet Brownies

INGREDIENTS: 4 large bananas 1 C. mini dark chocolate chips 1 C. butterscotch chips 1 C. mini marshmallows Whipped cream (optional)

INGREDIENTS: 1 Box brownie mix (15.25 oz.)

1 Jar maraschino cherries, drained (reserve juice) ¼ C. maraschino cherry juice (or water) ¼ C. vegetable oil 1 egg

METHOD: Slice the banana from stem to bottom, cutting through the peel and halfway through the flesh. Open the banana and fill with ¼ cup each of marshmallows, chocolate chips and butterscotch chips. Do this for all four bananas.

METHOD: Coat a cast iron skillet with butter.

Wrap the bananas in foil and place on coals or on top of a grill grate placed over the fire. Let the them cook for five minutes, or until contents are melted. Open the pouches carefully, enjoy!

To the skillet add brownie mix, cherry juice (use water to equal ¼ cup of liquid, if necessary), oil and egg. Whisk to combine. Place cherries on top and push down into the batter slightly. Cover with foil and place on top of grill grate set over a low fire or into the coals. Bake for 30 mins, or until center is set. Cool before cutting and serving.

Memory Boards: The hobbies and passions of a person are some of the most positive defining features of a lifetime. Near the front entrance, the family can fill a large table with items and creative projects that reflect those hobbies and passions. For example, a person that loved to travel could have a map displayed on the memory board with images of their journeys around the world.

Guest Books: Guest books encourage the family and friends at the service to write a memory of or a letter to the one who has passed. The book can be decorated with photos and memorabilia, with spaces for the guests to write in. At the end of the service, the guest book is packed with memories and kind words.

Jacquette’s Bakery has roots in Marple that stretch 38 years. The Marple community has always been the heart of Jacquette’s Bakery. The owner of the business, Dennis Jacquette, prides himself on the connections he has been able to build with his customers. His children grew up working in the business and he has served the families in the area with his dedication to his business and creating an incredible product.

Jacquette’s is grounded in the belief that people should be respected. The staff have felt so appreciated that some have stayed nearly two decades, and customers have felt dedicated enough to stay just as long.

“I’m a blessed man with a wonderful family. I’m blessed because I have such wonderful customers,” Dennis says. “I have families that have grown up on our stuff and the next generation of their children use us.”

One customer, Dennis was proud to share, first came to Jacquette’s when her family got her a custom cake for her 16th birthday.

After years of returning to Jacquette’s, the same woman came to the store to get her daughter a cake for her 16th birthday.

Years further, still, and that same woman is coming in for cakes for her grandchildren.

Jacquette’s is a family-run store, with some employees that have become family over time. One decorator, Dennis noted, has worked in the bakery for 19 years and continues to improve in her work and her passion for what she does.

Life’s Short, Eat Dessert First

Dennis and his wife Stephanie first met in a bakery, believe it or not, and have been happily married for 45 years. They have three children, who are now grown with five children of their own. Throughout Dennis’ life, there has always been an emphasis on family and love, coincidentally staged in a bakery most of the time.

Passion, joy, and a sweet tooth are folded in with dedication and hard work to create the atmosphere of this family-run bakery. The motto of the store is “life’s short, eat dessert first.” When he goes out to eat, Dennis will make sure to scan the dessert menu first to decide what he will be saving room for at the end of the meal.

Though it may be easy to get overwhelmed with work and stress, a store like Jacquette’s is a warm reminder to stop and enjoy the sweet things every now and then.

Dennis looked back with a smile on a memory of a cake delivery gone disastrously wrong. Jacquette’s had created a custom cake in the shape of a slot machine.

With a lever and button attached, this cake was a large, complex creation that had to be handled with care. Dennis managed to deliver the cake all the way to Roxborough, and was walking up the steps to drop it off when he tripped on a step and the cake

tumbled! With his talent, experience, and the help of friend who owned a bakery in the area, Dennis was able to whip up another cake, just as incredible, and deliver it in time for the customer’s celebration.

Though the memory was a uniquely difficult business challenge in the moment, it is something Dennis looks back on with a smile now. With this store, the Jacquettes have been able to share in the special days of their friends and neighbors all across Marple.

At the end of the day, running a small business can be incredibly difficult. When asked how he manages to keep a business for that long, Dennis explained “we go above and beyond - I will do stuff for customers that they couldn’t get somewhere else.”

Dennis isn’t surprised to work 36 hours without stop to produce enough baked goods for the holiday seasons. That’s just part of this job to him, and it is something he is excited to do to satisfy his customers. Despite the long hours and difficulty of running a small business, Jacquette’s Bakery is a joy for Dennis and the Jacquette family around him.

“It’s something to do till I grew up,” Dennis says, “but I never grew up, I just grew old.” M

It’s that time again: the start of school is drawing near.

Though it may seem like you just hung up the backpacks and returned all the library books from last school year, it all begins again soon. Anyone who’s juggled several school and work schedules simultaneously knows that planning ahead for the school year is key. Here are some recommendations to make sure your transition from summer to school is seamless.

RE-INTRODUCE ROUTINE Two weeks before the start of school, start to reinforce your kids’ daily routines. Begin setting an earlier bedtime and wake up late sleepers a little earlier. Meal times matter, too. Prepare snacks at convenient times for your younger ones so they get used to eating during snack and lunch times. Having trouble sticking to schedule? Use a dry erase board or print out a basic daily routine for the household to follow. By the time school starts, everyone will be in sync.

STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES Instead of commencing a mad dash to the school supplies aisle a week before the first day of class, make an itemized list of all the supplies each child needs. Begin picking up a few items at a time in the month leading up to the start of school, or order

it all online to save the hassle of store selection.

This goes for clothes, too!

Assess each child’s clothing needs before the first week of school and donate unwanted items.

TIP: Stash an “Emergency Kit” in each child’s backpack. Fill a small zipper pouch with the essentials: parents’ phone number(s), stain remover, a pen, tissue, and band aids just in case.

COORDINATE YOUR CALENDARS Prepare yourself for the busy clash of schedules at the start of school by color coordinating a large monthly calendar. Use a paper calendar with large squares or a dry-erase calendar for easy revising. Assign a different color to each family member so the events don’t blur together. By writing out the month in advance, you can observe scheduling patterns and predict conflicts ahead of time. M

D

id you know Don Johnson is an Eagle Scout? Not the Don Johnson of 1980s TV fame, Don Johnson of Marple Township fame, known for his service to youth. Yes, that Don Johnson who for more than 35 years has served as a Boy Scout leader in our community and is currently the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 315, chartered by St. Anastasia Church since 1947.

Originally chartered as Troop 1, it was in the late 1960s that Boy Scouts of America, now Scouts USA, required “Larchmont Troop 1” to change its unit number from Troop 1 to Troop 315. A few years later, Don Johnson, a Boy Scout himself at that time, stood on the parade field at Resica Falls Scout Reservation. Under a full moon, Johnson watched on live TV that “…the Eagle had landed” carrying Neil Armstrong, an Eagle Scout, to be the first man to walk on the moon. Months later, Johnson earned his own rank of Eagle Scout, taking his lifelong pledge to always do his best, to use his training to be an example, and to influence for better Scouting.

In 1984 Don Johnson and his wife Joan moved to Broomall so their son Donny could begin first grade at St. Anastasia School.

That year, Donny became a Cub Scout of Cub Pack 315. It was then that Donny's dad began his faithful service as a Scout Leader, first as Cub Pack Den Leader and later as Cubmaster of Pack 315.

When Donny crossed over into Boy Scout Troop 315, his dad took over as Scoutmaster of Troop 315 and has continued in

that leadership role for the past 30 years.

Johnson has spent that time guiding Scouts ages 11 through 18 in camping, outdoor survival skills, respect of God and Country, nature, and the importance of giving cheerful service to their community.

Since 1947 Troop 315 has been honored to have 65 Eagle Scouts, more than half of whom recall Don Johnson as their Scoutmaster.

They reflect on fond memories when they achieved Scouting’s highest honor and rank, one which less than five of every one hundred Scouts nationally are able to achieve.

Don Johnson, you are a Local Star to Marple Friends & Neighbors for your cheerful service to youth. Thank you for honoring your Eagle Scout Oath to teach the values of Scouting, to always Be Prepared, to Do Your Duty to God and Country, and to obey The Scout Law.
