The Pilot’s annual Best of the Pines contest is a culmination of work that began several months ago, with the ultimate goal of keeping the public involved all along the way. In June we asked you for nominations in 110 categories and from there found the top eight qualifying nominees in each to make up our ballot. When “Best Of” voting finally opened last month, we expected a strong response, but we continue to be surprised at the popularity of this event. Over 12,000 of you voted online to have your voices heard. The response grows deeper and more expansive with every year. And in the 1930s, it was almost destroyed by a tornado that came through.
