For decades, every call to Pinehurst Resort has begun with the same cheerful greeting: “It’s a beautiful day in Pinehurst!” For us, it’s more than a saying — it’s a way of life. While we’re proud to be recognized worldwide for golf, it’s the support of our community that makes today truly beautiful. With gratitude, we thank you.

elcome to The Pilot’s 12th annual Best of the Pines celebration. This latest edition maintains its reputation of what’s become one of the most eagerly awaited and hotly contested events of the year. It takes all of us — and all of you — to keep Best of the Pines humming along. This year, we’ve made that our theme by incorporating a mosaic design. The theme illustrates how the many disparate parts and businesses of Moore County come together to form this Eden in the Pines. Although we’re about to hit our teens, Best of the Pines keeps hitting records. This year, we had 189 categories and more than 148,000 votes from nearly 26,000 voters. Part of that growth was due to some new tech we incorporated: textto-vote. This year, we added three new groups to Best of the Pines:
Dining Out, Menu Items and Nightlife & Recreation, which is basically drilling down into the broader “Food & Drink” category from years past. We also added eight new categories: Estate Sales Team, Glass Repair, Legacy Business, Travel Agency, Mocktails/NA Menu, Place to Grab A Drink, Functional Medicine Practice and Tattoo Shop. In the case of Mocktails/NA Menu, Functional Medicine and Tattoo Shop, those were all added as our team noticed more of those businesses popping up around town to serve a growing demand. We’re excited to say that the new categories kept pace with the rest of the ballot in terms of engagement. Also in a record this year, we had 440 unique businesses finish in the Top 3. The most popular categories, as always, were food-related. Moore County voters lead with their stomachs. Interestingly this year, we had
five categories decided by a single vote: Catering; Private or Charter School; Interior Decorator; Place to Practice Your Golf Swing; and Dog Training. So yes, every vote counts. This year, we celebrate yet another new class for the Best of the Pines Hall of Fame, which we began in 2024. The honor recognizes businesses that have achieved the rare feat of winning first place in their category for 10 years. This year, we are adding Spot On Floor and Carpet Rejuvenation; Granny’s Donuts; Elite Roofing; 4 Seasons Heating & Air; Pik N Pig; and Chapman’s Food & Spirits. Our inaugural class in 2024 included Beefeaters; The Spa at Pinehurst; Gulley’s Garden Center; Moore County Farmers Market; The Wine Cellar; Camelot Park; Belli Bambini; Burney Hardware; and the Ice Cream Parlor. In 2025, we added to that the Pinehurst Fair Barn;
FirstHealth Fitness Center; Five Points Pet Resort; Honeycutt Jewelers; Hot Asana; The Little Toy Shop; Sandhills Children’s Center (Festival of Trees); Jason’s Tire & Auto; and Vito’s Ristorante & Pizzeria. This magazine summarizes what has become just about a year-round effort by our staff. From imagining the concepts to designing and executing the entire campaign, it is a massive undertaking by The Pilot team, all while handling all their other regular responsibilities. But when you’re in service to the Best of the Pines, you do your best, right? We congratulate all our winners and celebrate all the great businesses, people and organizations that make Moore County one of the best places to live in North Carolina. While we are many, we come together to form one heck of a community. – John Nagy, editor

ONE PIECE AT A TIME: The Best of the Pines Hall of Fame returns for with its third annual class of local legends who have now won 1st place in their category for 10 years. These businesses aren’t just great at what they do, they’re iconic in our community and have earned the love and loyalty of their customers year after year. This year’s inductees are distinct in what they do, but they’re all united by the same level of care, craftsmanship and consistency that our community knows and loves. We’ve got a roofing company that keeps us warm and dry, an HVAC crew that keeps our homes comfortable through every season and a carpet cleaning business that keeps our floors looking (and smelling) brand new. And when it’s time to eat, we’ve got some of our iconic local menu items -- tender, juicy barbecue, mouthwatering burgers and handmade donuts worth waking up early for. Together, these six businesses form a picture of a community that prides itself on quality work and taking care of each other. The Hall of Fame is our way of recognizing the value that each business contributes to our quality of life here in the Sandhills. Congratulations to the class of 2026!

Owners Kitty Hopkins and Peter Hamm met years before opening Chapman’s Food and Spirits when they were both in the industry working elsewhere. After decades of working for and with other restaurants, they decided to join forces and create something all their own. They completely renovated the building from front to back and cultivated a cozy appeal both inside and out. Their menu offers everything from simple fare to sumptuous plates, quickly becoming known for their bacon jam burger and the Hamm burger. In March 2026, Chapman’s celebrated their 10th anniversary of offering delicious chef-driven, American fare in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. “Winning Best Burger once is exciting. Bits & Pieces Best Antique Store and Best Thrift Shop had the tightest races in this group of categories. The most popular category in this group based off total votes was Best Locally Made Product.
the advice is free, golf shops that are always stocked for the next round and wine shops happy to pour their best recommendations. None of it happens by accident. Behind every well-dressed window and well-stocked shelf is someone who cares about getting it right, and shoppers who keep their dollars local.
According to our voters, this year’s winners are the ones who got it right the best. These winners prove that our town is full of treasures waiting to be found, and that every shopping trip is an opportunity to explore, indulge and celebrate the community we love.

ou can tell a lot about a place by how it shops. Here in Moore County, that often means skipping the big box in favor of the shop owner who knows your name, the boutique with the dress you won’t see on anyone else and the storefront window that stops you mid-stride and makes you want to take a peek inside. This year’s Shopping winners are proof of that spirit. Racks and shelves fill up with pieces that have a story, such as furniture refinished by hand, jewelry forged in house or pottery made from the local clay. Antique stores and consignment shops give secondhand items new life. Our boutiques dress us head to toe, from lingerie and accessories to the season’s trendiest shoes. But we’re more than just clothing. We’ve got gardening stores bursting with color, hardware stores where

Bits & Pieces The category for Best Breakfast/Brunch took the top spot for total votes in Dining Out, proving that locals take their first meal of the day seriously… even if it may not happen till mid-morning. Best Thai Restaurant received the most text votes in this group of categories.
We decided to arrange all the categories that have to do with restaurants into a group called “Dining Out.” These categories deal with types of cuisine served and the overall restaurant experience, rather than individual menu items.
Whether you’re hungry for a leisurely brunch, a food truck parked nearby or a romantic date night, these winners have what you’re looking for. Congratulations to the restaurants, chefs and crews who can turn any meal into a reason to celebrate.

oo many categories!” That’s one of the biggest bits of feedback we hear about the ballot every year. But there’s a lot that goes into deciding the categories every year, and just as often we hear “Can you add another category next year?” In an effort to address this, we took a good hard look at last year’s ballot and realized the group of categories called “Food & Drink” had more categories than any other group by leaps and bounds. But these food and drink categories are also the most popular ones on the ballot, receiving the highest number of total votes across the board. Once we started analyzing the categories, we realized that splitting food and drink into two groups might make it much easier for foodies to find the categories they’re looking for, and cut down on some of the overwhelm.

n our effort to make the ballot feel more manageable, we created “Menu Items” when we split the food and drink categories into two groups. While “Dining Out” focuses on the dining experience and the restaurant as a whole, “Menu Items” focuses on, well, the items on their menu. Sometimes you choose a restaurant because you like everything they do, and other times you may go to a restaurant because they have a specific item that you can’t stop thinking about. he group of categories that was previously known as “Health & Fitness” got a glowup this year. If you’re anything like us, you may have noticed a recent cultural shift in focus away from the absence of illness and more toward overall wellbeing, including habits and lifestyle. When we analyzed the categories in this group, we agreed that “Wellness & Aesthetics” was a much better representation of what’s included. Of course there are the traditional healthcare categories, such as dermatology, ophthalmology, physical therapy and hearing care, but the majority of these categories highlight the supplemental services that just make you feel better. There’s a shift towards a multidimensional, holistic approach, rather than focusing on the physical body. It’s more than medical attention, it’s the art of caring

ARTS & COMMUNITY
very community has a heartbeat, and here in the Sandhills, that pulse beats loud and strong. You can hear it in the strum of a guitar, the laughter at a pop-up market, the applause at a performance and the quiet joy of giving back. This year’s Arts & Community winners remind us that we’re surrounded by extraordinary talent, creativity and generosity. From the harmonies of adult and youth choirs to the unforgettable energy of local bands and solo musicians, music continues to be one of the strong threads that ties us together. Our theaters, dance studios and performing arts groups give us spaces to connect, be inspired and even take the stage ourselves. Community festivals, holiday celebrations, trivia nights and karaoke spots give us reasons to gather, laugh, and make memories. Farmers markets and
pottery shops let creativity and craftsmanship shine while supporting our beloved local makers. And when it comes to celebrating life’s biggest moments, our wedding venues and pictureperfect selfie spots give us settings to make it all unforgettable. Just as vital are the places that inspire us to give back, whether that’s caring for animals, supporting children, honoring veterans, uplifting seniors or contributing to the general wellness of our community. These organizations and events reflect the generosity and heart that make this place that we call home so special. Whether you’re swinging a golf club, catching a movie or raising a glass at a fundraising event, this year’s winners prove that arts and community aren’t just categories on a ballot; they’re the spirit of the Sandhills.
Bits & Pieces The Farmers Market category received the most total votes of any category in this group, proving that shopping local and spending time outdoors continue to be big community interests. Best Holiday Event was the most competitive race in this group of categories.

ome of the work that goes into a home is easy to notice. The right tile, the right paint color, the piece of furniture that finally makes a room feel finished. But a lot of what keeps a house together happens where nobody’s looking. It’s the roof that doesn’t leak, the wiring that doesn’t fail, the pipes that quietly do their job for years without a single thought from anyone inside. That kind of work rarely gets celebrated, but it’s the reason everything else is possible. Then there’s everything in between; the businesses that help you find a house in the first place, finance it, and keep it clean and pest-free once you’re living in it. Less visible than a renovation, less tangible than a new couch, but just as essential to a home actually working the way it’s supposed to. Put it all together and you get more than a house. You get a neighborhood that holds up and a community that

he winners in the Business and Professional Services categories are who you call when you need someone that really knows their stuff. When you’re in a pinch, these are the experts who can help. Some categories are practical: auto repair, glass repair, paving, insurance, financial planning; these are the services we rely on and rarely think about until we need them. Other categories mark milestones: wedding venues, photographers, planners, caterers. And then there are the categories that recognize the people behind the businesses: veteran, minority and woman owners. After a special section in PineStraw magazine was such a big hit in 2025, we decided to add Best Legacy Business as a category this year as well. These rankings come from

f you’re a parent, there’s a good chance you’re always looking for recommendations for your children. This type of evergreen content is what keeps Facebook groups alive and thriving. What’s the best playground? What do you do with your kids during summer? Where do you go trick-or-treating? How do you sign them up for a sport that will help cut down on some of that excess energy? So much excess energy. A lot of these categories could be filed away in different groups, but the goal was to cultivate a section that would be a valuable resource, a one-stop-shop where busy parents can quickly find what they’re looking for. Because let’s be honest, nobody with kids at home has spare time to go hunting for it. Save yourself some time and check out the recommendations in the next few pages. This year’s winners are the ones locals turn to, and then tell everyone else to turn to as well.
Bits & Pieces The category for Best Private or Charter School was the closest race in this group of categories. It was also the category that received the most text votes. Best Family Friendly Restaurant received the most votes of any category in this group, proving once again how much our community loves dining out.

Bits & Pieces Veterinarian Practice received the most votes in this group of categories, showing that readers are just as invested in keeping their pets healthy as they are in spoiling them. Best Dog Training was the tightest race in this group of categories.
vigilant lost-and-found pet volunteers and new animal rescue groups popping up every year, and you start to see a place that’s organized itself, in small and large ways, around the animals that live alongside us. So maybe the question isn’t whether we found or built this pet-loving community. Maybe it’s that a place this
welcoming to animals was always going to attract people who feel the same way about theirs. And those people, in turn, made it even more so. The groomers, trainers, boarders, vets, shops and events in the next few pages are what keep that story going.

omewhere along the way, we noticed a bit of a chick-and-egg situation: did this community shape its love of animals, or did its love of animals shape the community? It’s not uncommon to walk by a business and find a water bowl by the door. Many businesses have their own pets on the property, and you never know who’s got some dog treats stashed in their pocket, just waiting for a good boy to spoil. There are dozens of businesses that welcome, even encourage, friendly pets to tag along. When enough people decide that their pet goes wherever they go, everyone else starts to build around it. Some of that comes from who lives here. This is largely a military community, and for a lot of our neighbors, a dog isn’t just a pet, it’s a family member, a working partner that goes everywhere they go. Add in an equestrian population that’s quietly making noise,

NIGHTLIFE & RECREATION
T
his year we created a new group for all the categories that tend to have a bit of a social aspect to them. Not every category here requires company, exactly, but most of them have that after-hours feel, the version of life you seek when the workday’s over and people are actually trying to have fun. These are where you go to unwind, to show off, to compete a little or to just be somewhere other than home. We also added a new category this year: mocktails and non-alcoholic (NA) menus, because we’ve seen those options show up on more and more bar and restaurant menus lately. We figured it was only fair
that they get their own recognition. Some of these categories are about who’s pouring the drinks, whether that’s a craft cocktail, a well-stocked beer list or a mobile bar showing up for someone else’s big night. Others are about the activities: karaoke, trivia, live music, a driving range or a spot on the water. And a few are just about capturing the moment, the place you want to show off when you have visitors in town or a good spot to pull out your phone and snap a pic. Whether it’s broad daylight or after hours, these are where our community goes to have a good time.
