What’s black and white and read all over?

The Pilot’s 11th annual Best of the Pines. On behalf of everyone here at The Pilot, I welcome you to our latest edition of one of the most eagerly awaited and hotly contested events of the year. We know something’s going well when we see people on social media pining for tickets to the annual Best of the Pines reveal party as if it’s the Met Gala. Like that swanky NYC affair, we also have our own color scheme and design theme each year. In past years, we’ve done a red carpet, watercolors, vintage stamps and more. Last year for our 10th anniversary, we used all the colors to create somewhat of a “street art” motif. This year, we’ve gone a bit analog on you, adopting something with which we

This year, we had 188 categories for voting and more than 23,000 voters. We added six new categories as a response to voter feedback from 2024.

In a record this year, we had 410 unique businesses finish in the Top 3.

The most popular categories, as always, were food-related: pizza, barbecue, authentic pub, casual dining, coffee shop and bakery. As always, Moore County voters lead with their stomach — and since our newspaper staff does also, that aligns neatly with our theme.

A few other cool trends from this year:

• Best Woman-Owned Business had 144 unique write-in nominees

• Best Veteran-Owned Business had 60 unique write-in nominees

• Best New Business had 38 write-in nominees

We also celebrate a new

class for the Best of the Pines Hall of Fame, which we began last year. The honor recognizes businesses that have achieved the rare feat of winning first place in their category for 10 years. This year, we add the Pinehurst Fair Barn, FirstHealth Fitness Center, Five Points Pet Resort, Honeycutt Jewelers, Hot Asana Yoga Studio, The Little Toy Shop, Sandhills Children’s Center, Jason’s Tire & Auto and Vito’s Ristorante & Pizzeria to the Best of the Pines Hall of Fame.

Though this magazine appears just once a year, the effort behind it never pauses; our advertising team spends

all year planning, preparing and fine-tuning what you see here. From imagining the concepts to designing and executing the entire campaign, it is a massive undertaking by The Pilot ad team, all while handling all their other regular responsibilities. But when you’re in service to the Best of the Pines, you do your best, right?

We congratulate all our winners and celebrate all the great businesses, people and organizations that make Moore County one of the best places to live in North Carolina.

HOT OF THE PRESSES: The Best of the Pines Hall of Fame is back with its second annual class of local legends! These aren’t just businesses; they’re the heartbeat of our community, delivering everything from healthy lifestyles and joyful play to sparkling jewels and perfect pizza pies. Each one has become a headline-worthy success story by earning the love, trust and loyalty of customers year after year.

This year’s inductees remind us why we love living, working, dining and celebrating right here at home. We’re talking about a fitness center that keeps us healthy and strong, a yoga studio that helps us breathe and balance, a jeweler that makes life shine, a toy store that sparks imagination and a beloved fundraising event that lifts up children of all abilities. Add to that a trusted auto shop, a go-to wedding venue, a top-notch dog boarding center and a New York-style pizzeria that’s been feeding the community for 45 years, and you’ve got one unforgettable front page.

The Hall of Fame is our way of saying “thank you” to these extraordinary businesses for setting the standard, year after year. They’ve made a big impact on our community, and now they’re making history.

Hot Asana

Ten Years: Best Yoga Studio

Founder Virginia Gallagher launched her first Hot Asana Yoga Studio in 2010, in the modest space above the Sunrise Theater. Hot Asana was founded with an inclusive “Sweat & Soul” philosophy, offering hot and warm classes with a wide range of practices for everyone. After years of community and growth, they’ve expanded – both their space here in Southern Pines and with new locations across the country. In 2017 Virginia purchased and transformed an abandoned laundry building into their current three-story flagship yoga center and cafe. Whether you come for the diverse classes, transformative teacher training, relaxing retreats, Lululemon selection or simply the cool lavender cloths, you’re bound to find something to love..

“Entry into the Best of the Pines Hall of Fame is wonderful evidence that Hot Asana is considered to be one of the best parts of this vibrant courageous community, and we love having that accolade. Being a family-owned small business is never an easy endeavor, but you all certainly make it a worthwhile one.”

– So much gratitude, Virginia Gallagher, Founder & Brady Gallagher, General Manager

Ten Years: Best Fine Jewelry Store

The longest continuously running business in downtown Southern Pines is the hometown jewelry store, Honeycutt Jewelers. The family business, owned and operated by Dana Kirkpatrick and her mother Diane, has been inhabiting the corner of NW Broad Street and W. Pennsylvania Avenue since 1950 and is Moore County’s trusted source for diamonds and heirloom quality jewelry. Known for their broad selection, unique designs and amazing customer service, Honeycutt Jewelers has been voted Best of the Pines’s number one jewelry store ten times!

“On behalf of our family, we are honored to be recognized as the Best Fine Jewelry Store in our community. For 75 years, it has been a privilege to serve generations of Moore County families. This award reflects your loyalty and support, for which we are truly grateful. Thank you for letting us be part of your special moments!”- Dana Kirkpatrick

Toy shop

Ten Years: Best Place to Buy Toys

The Little Toy Shop has been the first choice of families in Southern Pines seeking that perfect gift for more than a decade. Since their doors opened in 1996, they have had the pleasure of providing innumerable children with toys they cherish. The Little Toy Shop offers unique, high-quality toys that embrace a child’s sense of wonderment and joy – from cuddly doll babies to dress-up costumes, from books and science toys to trains and brain-teasers.

The Little Toy Shop features only the best in toys, selected annually at the national toy show! They work hard to make a visit to the Little Toy Shop memorable and fun, with visits from Santa, free gift wrapping, special orders as needed and hands-on displays so little ones can experience the adventure as they shop. Parents, grandparents, and friends will find toy shopping easy here for the little ones in their lives.

“We are so proud and thankful for the support from the community for these many years. And we thank the Best of the Pines for allowing us to join the Hall of Fame.” – owners Linda and Robert Levy

Ten Years: Best Gym

“For more than three decades, FirstHealth has demonstrated its commitment to the vital role physical activity plays in health care. We are incredibly proud that FirstHealth Fitness has been recognized as “Best of the Pines” in the gym category for ten years in a row. Every day, we strive to live FirstHealth’s core purpose: To Care for People. We believe exercise is medicine—an essential tool to help prevent and treat chronic illness and injury. Whether you’re training for a marathon or simply wanting to keep up with kids or grandkids, the same principles of exercise apply, tailored to your needs and goals. Our staff bring the expertise to support you at every stage of your fitness journey. This would not be possible without the steadfast support of FirstHealth leadership, the dedication of our outstanding team, and, most importantly, the loyal members and guests who choose us every day.” - John Caliri, Administrative Director, FirstHealth Fitness

Ristorante & Pizzeria

Ten Years: Best Pizza

Vito’s has proudly served the Sandhills community since 1980, offering authentic Italian cuisine with New York-style pizza, chicken, veal and seafood dishes made from fresh ingredients and vegetables straight from the garden. Founded by Vito Gironda and his brothers in downtown Southern Pines, the restaurant has become a local institution with loyal regulars, as well as a second location in Pinehurst. Thanks to the welcoming, casual environment, Vito’s is the place to meet your neighbors and enjoy a slice of heaven in the Sandhills. Vito’s has earned numerous Best of the Pines awards over the years, including Best Italian Restaurant, and Best Wine Menu and is now a ten-time winner for Best Pizza.

A big “GRAZIE” to all our patrons for the loyalty and support over the years. - The Gironda family

Ten Years: Best Pet Boarding

Five Points Pet Resort has been a standout in the Best of the Pines contest for years. It’s clear that the Brock family understands the definite difference between a kennel and a pet resort. Since opening its doors 21 years ago, Five Points Pet Resort has focused on quality of care and accommodations to provide their clients the customized boarding experience they’ve become known for. At both of their upscale locations, they’re proud to offer pets plenty of personal attention, socialization and stimulation. Whether daycare or overnight boarding in a luxury suite, pets can enjoy golf cart rides, splash pad play dates and spa services... while owners can keep an eye on the webcam and enjoy peace of mind.

“The Five Points Pet Resort family is deeply grateful to our clients for the trust and loyalty you’ve shown us over the years in caring for your beloved pets.” - Candace Brock, owner

Ten Years: Best Wedding Venue

The Fair Barn has once again been named Best of the Pines, celebrating an incredible 10-year winning streak. Built in 1917 as an exhibition hall for the Sandhills Fair, the historic mission-style barn is now the Sandhills’ premier indoor venue. With its soaring ceilings, dramatic wooden trusses and blend of historic charm and modern amenities, the Fair Barn has become the go-to destination for weddings, conferences, trade shows and private events. Fair Barn Coordinator Holly Neal has been instrumental in its success, ensuring every event is memorable with her dedication and exceptional service.

As the oldest surviving fair exhibition hall in North Carolina, the Fair Barn continues to inspire — and its decade of recognition proves it remains the crown jewel of the Sandhills.

Food is at the heart of how we celebrate, connect and savor life in The Pines. It’s no surprise that this section always serves up the most votes, the fiercest debates and the hungriest readers. After all, nothing sparks passion quite like a favorite restaurant or a dish that hits the spot every single time. Last year, you told us what was missing, so this year we welcomed several new categories to this group, including mobile bar, fine dining, micro-bakery, health-focused menu, chicken sandwich and french fries.

The winners in Food & Drink prove that our community knows how to eat well. Think barbecue that melts off the bone, pizza with bubbling cheese and blistered crust, burgers stacked high with flavor and wings sauced to perfection. Add in frozen treats, donuts, hot dogs, sushi, seafood and a glass of something refreshing

– whether that’s a local beer, a bold wine or a special handcrafted cocktail – and you’ve got a dining scene worth toasting.

This is also where tradition meets innovation. Chefs are plating fine dining experiences worthy of celebration, while food trucks, micro-bakeries and casual lunch spots keep things fresh, fast and creative. Whether you’re lunching with family, unwinding on a patio or discovering a new restaurant before everyone else, these winners make every bite memorable.

Here in Moore County, food is more than what’s on the plate (or in the glass). It’s laughter at a sports bar, a family Sunday brunch or a much needed coffee break. These winners remind us that here in the Sandhills, every bite or sip comes with a side of community.

ARTS & COMMUNITY

Every community has a heartbeat, and here in the Sandhills, that pulse beats loud and strong. You can hear it in the strum of a guitar, the laughter at a pop-up market, the applause at a performance and the quiet joy of giving back. This year’s Arts & Community winners remind us that we’re surrounded by extraordinary talent, creativity and generosity.

From the harmonies of adult and youth choirs to the unforgettable energy of local bands and solo musicians, music continues to be one of the strong threads that ties us together. Our theaters, dance studios and performing arts groups give us spaces to connect, be inspired and even take the stage ourselves.

Community festivals, holiday celebrations, trivia nights and karaoke spots give us reasons to gather, laugh, and make memories. Farmers markets and pottery shops let creativity and

craftsmanship shine while supporting our beloved local makers. And when it comes to celebrating life’s biggest moments, our wedding venues and picture-perfect selfie spots give us settings to make it all unforgettable.

Just as vital are the places that inspire us to give back, whether that’s caring for animals, supporting children, honoring veterans, uplifting seniors or contributing to the general wellness of our community. These organizations and events reflect the generosity and heart that make this place that we call home so special.

Whether you’re swinging a golf club, catching a movie or raising a glass at a fundraising event, this year’s winners prove that arts and community aren’t just categories on a ballot; they’re the spirit of the Sandhills.

BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

When it comes to building a community, it takes more than great food, music and events; it takes the people who keep our cars on the road, our finances in order, our hairstyles on point and our big moments unforgettable. This year’s Business & Pro Services winners prove that excellence isn’t just a buzzword, it’s what they deliver every single day.

Our automotive professionals here keep every ride looking sharp and running smooth. Hair salons, barbershops and nail studios bring the same polish to people, turning fresh cuts, flawless nails and smooth finishes into everyday confidence.

Life’s big decisions also call for professionals you can trust in a more personal way. We’ve got attorneys, insurance experts and financial planners who can guide you through the serious stuff with skill and care. For life’s big celebrations, our florists, photographers

and event planners make “picture-perfect” look easy.

We’re also shining a light on the entrepreneurs and trailblazers shaping the future of business here: our newest ventures, as well as the woman-owned, minority-owned and veteran-owned businesses who bring fresh ideas and

diversity to our local scene. This year’s winners prove that our community is full of businesses that go above and beyond. With skill, heart and plenty of personality, they make everyday life easier, brighter and just a little more delightful.

Sandhills/Moore Coalition for Human Care is a vital force for compassion and connection in Moore County. The Coalition has been feeding the hungry, preventing homelessness, keeping people warm, offering a fresh start and providing for neighbors in need for nearly 40 years. The impact can be seen in thousands of lives stabilized through emergency assistance, food and access to critical resources.

Any parent knows that raising children is equal parts magical and messy. One minute you’re cheering at a soccer game, the next you’re bribing someone to brush their teeth. Thankfully, our community is a village packed with options that make family life a little easier, and a lot more fun.

This year’s Family winners cover everything from the fun stuff to the nitty gritty. Need a safe, loving place for your toddler? We’ve got award-winning childcare and preschools. Looking for a pediatric dentist who can make a tiny human actually smile in the chair? Yep, they’re here too. And when it comes to shopping, our boutiques and toy stores know exactly how to spark joy (and maybe a few begging eyes in the checkout line).

Of course, kids aren’t meant to sit still. That’s why our playgrounds, water spots, outdoor adventures and summer camps are always at the top

of the list. Rainy days are no problem when we’ve got indoor activities and storytimes ready to save the day. Add in birthday party spots, youth sports clubs and the best places to spot Santa or load up on candy at Halloween, and suddenly “I’m bored” is no longer part of the family vocabulary.

And because it truly does take a village, this group also includes the lawyers, therapists, photographers and family-friendly restaurants that keep our families supported, smiling and well-fed. In short, these winners prove that raising a family here is truly delightful.

Balance, renewal, strength and care. The winners in Health & Fitness remind us that well-being comes in many forms, each one offering its own path to a healthier, more centered life.

Some spaces invite us to move with intention: gyms that energize, yoga studios that quiet the mind and concept fitness classes that transform routine into ritual. Others bring healing and restoration through massage, alternative therapies, chiropractic care and physical therapy.

The journey also extends to the art of caring for ourselves and taking preventative measures. Medspas, skincare specialists and dermatology practices help us glow. Spas provide calm for both body and spirit. Dentistry, hearing care and vision services help us feel confident in the everyday moments we often take for granted

HEALTH & FITNESS

Health and trust go hand-in-hand.. Pharmacies guide us through the details that keep life moving smoothly. Home care services and retirement communities provide comfort, dignity and peace of mind for the whole family. Together, these places weave a circle of care that

strengthens not just the body, but our entire community.

This year’s winners show that health is more than a goal to chase. It is a practice, a rhythm and a gift to celebrate, nurtured by the people and places devoted to helping us feel whole.

READ ALL ABOUT IT

The Gym category took the most total votes, showing how important fitness is in daily life.

The General Dentistry Practice category was the most competitive Health & Fitness category, with more than 30 practices submitted during the nominations phase.

The tightest contest was Physical Therapy Practices, reflecting confidence in multiple providers.

Upgrade your hearing, upgrade your life

Tune into life’s most important moments. Whether it’s catching every word of your favorite song, not missing a single punchline,or simply hearing loved ones a little clearer, give yourself the gift of better hearing. Because good things come to those who listen

HOME & HOME SERVICES

More than just walls and a roof, our homes are the places where life happens. Behind every well-kept yard, cozy living room and sparkling kitchen, there’s a trusted local expert making it happen. The winners in Home & Home Services are the neighbors we call when we need advice, repairs or just a helping hand.

Electricians, plumbers, landscapers and lawn care professionals keep daily life running smoothly behind the scenes. Homebuilders, interior decorators and custom woodworking specialists help us transform spaces into reflections of our style, while flooring, paint, cabinetry and tile experts add the finishing touches that bring a home together.

Real estate agents, mortgage companies and home inspectors guide us through the big moves, while cleaning crews, pressure washing teams and

heating and air companies make sure our homes are not only livable, but truly comfortable.

These winners use their skills, care and dedication every day to help make

our homes safe, beautiful and welcoming. In every project and every detail, they prove that home is where expertise and heart come together.

READ ALL ABOUT IT

Heating & Air Companies was the most-voted category with Plumber coming in a close second. Our voters don’t take for granted these companies that keep us comfortable!

The category for Real Estate Agents saw the closest race, indicating a highly competitive housing market, which makes sense in a community where houses, roads and new neighborhoods keep popping up faster than you can update your GPS.

Tail wags, happy barks and a whole lot of love. Our community wouldn’t be the same without the furry, hairy and occasionally feathery friends who make every day brighter. The winners in the Pets section show just how much care, fun and dedication goes into keeping our four-legged family members healthy, happy and spoiled just the right amount.

These dog trainers are teaching everything from “sit” and “stay” to military-grade training that transforms pups into disciplined, confident companions. Groomers, veterinarians and pet supply stores make sure every pet looks, feels and stays their best. Equine supply shops and pet events add even more ways for animals and owners to enjoy life together. Boarding facilities keep tails wagging while owners are away, and dog-friendly businesses roll out the water bowls

and belly rubs, making pets feel just as welcome as their humans. You can feel our community’s love for pets everywhere you go. Around here, it’s impossible to walk a block without meeting a wagging tail or a

wet nose. Every winner in this section is part of the pack that makes Moore County one of the most pet-friendly places around, where every bark, purr and happy whinny is greeted with love and enthusiasm.

Veterinarian Practice received the most votes in this group of categories, showing that not only do we care about pets, we care about caring for our pets!

Dog-Friendly Business had the second largest vote count, proving how meaningful this amenity is to our community.
