WPainting The Town: Best of the Pines Celebrates
a Decade of Accolades
elcome to the tenth annual edition of The Pilot’s Best of the Pines awards! Or, for the Roman numeral enthusiasts, edition X. But don’t worry—this isn’t a nod to any social media platform, we won’t be hosting any X Games and we won’t be doing any algebra. What we have done, in partnership with our presenting sponsor, Pinehurst Resort, is host another record-breaking campaign, with more than 23,000 voters logging in to cast their votes for their local favorites.
This magazine captures the culmination of nearly a year-long effort by our team at The Pilot. From conceptualizing and designing the graphics to executing the entire campaign, it’s a massive undertaking, and Best of the Pines keeps growing every year. This year, we added 14 new categories, for a total of 194. New additions include everything from Best Place to Take a Selfie to Best Dog-Friendly Business.
After more than 88,000 write-in nominations in June, we narrowed down to 1,528 nominees that advanced to the Top 8 for the final voting phase in July. In the following pages, you’ll see 390 businesses that claimed the top 3 spots in their respective categories.
As usual, food reigns supreme in popularity, with the “Bakery” and “Breakfast/Brunch” categories tying for the category that received the most total votes. And, for yet another year, Granny’s Donuts in Aberdeen claimed the
most votes in a single category.
This year also saw 51 businesses nominated for “Best New Business,” a testament to the vibrancy of our local economy. With so much to take in, we’ve added a business index at the back of the magazine to help you easily locate your favorite businesses across 132 pages.
But the biggest update in our 10th year is the introduction of the Best of the Pines Hall of Fame, recognizing businesses that have achieved the impressive feat of winning first place in their category for 10 years. We’ve highlighted these nine businesses in the next few pages, and they’ll also receive a special plaque to celebrate their accomplishments. We’ll continue to induct more businesses as they reach this milestone in the coming years.
Lastly, you may have noticed that each year, we’ve designed the contest around a specific color and theme. We’ve had fun with a red carpet theme, whimsical watercolors, anaglyph geometrics, vintage stamps and more. This year, to celebrate a decade of Best of the Pines, we opted to include all the colors of the rainbow in a “street art” motif that says, while established, we’re keeping it just a bit edgy.
Congratulations to all the winners, and we’re already looking forward to our ‘tween years.
— John Nagy, editor
About the Artists
his year’s creative theme called for a street artist, so we commissioned a North Carolina-based duo known for their work at popular local spots like Rec Room and Banh-Sen Street Food and Noodle Bar.
Lucy Phung (@1ucysushi) is a painter and muralist recognized for her expertise in realism and portraiture. Her work has been exhibited at prestigious venues such as The Charlotte Museum of History and the Da Nang Fine Arts Museum. She recently received the ASC Emerging Creators Fellowship. Alex DeLarge (@alxdlrg) is a muralist and painter known for his bold works and innovative wood sculpture paintings. His style blends street art with woodworking, resulting in unique, multi-dimensional pieces. He’s been commissioned by brands like Coca-Cola, Google and The Hartford. Together, Lucy and Alex travel the world working on bespoke projects for private collectors, music festivals, public events, small businesses, large corporations and now Best of the Pines. We’re honored to welcome them at the Awards Party, creating an interactive art installation depicting life in The Pines.
A special place to celebrate the businesses that have truly gone above and beyond. These businesses aren’t just great at what they do — they’ve become beloved parts of our local community, earning the trust and loyalty of their customers year after year. The Hall of Fame is our way of saying “thank you” to these outstanding businesses for their commitment to excellence and for making our community a better place to live, shop, dine, work and play.
To kick things off, we’re inducting nine incredible businesses that have achieved something truly remarkable: winning first place in their respective business categories in Best of the Pines for 10 straight years. These businesses have set the bar high, consistently delivering top-notch service and quality. They’ve clearly earned a special place in the hearts of locals, who have shown their appreciation by giving them their vote, again and again.
Ten Years: Best Spa
For more than 20 years, The Spa at Pinehurst has been honored to provide Moore County residents with a respite for self-care and wellness. From the moment you walk through the door, the classic, tranquil environment immediately lifts the weight from your shoulders. In the hands of expert staff—offering massages, facials, body care and more—you’ll experience true rejuvenation of both body and mind. Located next to the beautiful Carolina Hotel in the Village of Pinehurst, The Spa at Pinehurst is the area’s premier destination for wellbeing and serenity, with just a pinch of Southern hospitality.
“Being a Best of the Pines winner means being an important part of our community. We are incredibly honored and humbled by the support our beautiful home gives to us. Being able to offer a respite for our neighbors and provide a healing and calming experience to those that mean the most to us is very special to us all.”—
Jana Koebrick, Director of Spa, Pinehurst Resort
Ten Years: Best Wine Shop
The Wine Cellar is a locally owned wine bar and bottle shop in downtown Southern Pines, serving the Sandhills for over 25 years. It staffs two nationally certified sommeliers who select each of the 400 different wines and beers in the store. Specializing in small production wines from family owned wineries, The Wine Cellar offers superior quality and better value than a grocery store’s shelf. Serving wines by the glass daily with eight craft beers rotating on tap, live music every weekend, a covered patio and a large event room, The Wine Cellar truly is a wine lover’s dream.
“We so are grateful the readers of The Pilot have named The Wine Cellar as the best wine shop every year since the ‘Best Of’ awards program began.” — Owner, Jarrett Deerwester
Ten Years: Best Steak
Beefeaters is a cherished Southern Pines landmark that has stood the test of time. For over 25 years, this beloved establishment has been serving up mouthwatering steaks, burgers, seafood, salads and nightly specials that keep diners coming back for more. Owner Will Faircloth is deeply committed to food quality, never compromising it for cost. He upholds rigorous standards for every cut of beef and ensures that the cooking process delivers a consistently exceptional steakhouse experience.
“We are so grateful that for so many years the community continues to support us. From the guys who cut, prepare and cook each steak to the team members who take great care of each of our guests when they dine with us, winning this award is such a big deal as we strive every single day to provide a best-in-class experience. This helps validate and reward all of our efforts.” — Owner, Will Faircloth
Ten Years: Best Frozen Treats
Since 1976 The Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant has proudly served the people of Moore County. Whether it’s the burgers and fries, classic club or chicken salad, or the homemade ice cream, shakes and floats, there is something for everyone on the menu. Beyond the 24 flavors and lunch and dinner offerings, The Ice Cream Parlor is something more. People come to visit with friends, grandparents bring the little ones in for a treat, neighbors get to know each other and our community grows.
“Being a part of that community is the most important of all and it’s an honor to be voted Best of the Pines alongside so many great local businesses.” — Owner, Anthony Parks
Ten Years: Best Hardware Store
Founded in 1921, Burney Hardware has grown through three expansions, adding rental, outdoor power equipment, and an expanded sales yard for landscaping materials. In 2018, they opened a second location in Seven Lakes to better serve the community. Known for personal, knowledgeable service and a wide range of merchandise, Burney offers everything from single bolts to screen repairs. Their dedicated team is committed to helping each customer and serving the community. They’re proud to continue the tradition of excellent service with three generations involved in the business.
“Without The Pilot, Burney Hardware would not have been able to research its history in preparation for its 100th birthday in 2021. It is really meaningful that we are able to participate in Best of the Pines and get feedback from our customers and the community at large. Thank you for supporting local businesses in Moore County.” - Jim, Kristy & Sam Ransdell, owners
Ten Years: Best Children’s/Baby Boutique
Belli Bambini is excited to celebrate 20 years of business in summer 2025. The shop offers traditional and modern children’s apparel, adult specialty clothing, Christening outfits, Bibles, shoes, toys and more. On-site embroidery and baby registries are among their special services, and young shoppers love to stop in for a lollipop. Located in charming downtown Southern Pines, they proudly offer discounts for military, first responders and FirstHealth employees.
“Being a Best of the Pines award winner really makes us feel special. We’re proud to have all the baby things you need right here in Moore County, and our family looks forward to continuing this tradition for generations.” - Owner, Mel DeLancy
Ten Years: Best Gardening Store
Gulley’s Garden Center is a multi-generational family owned and operated gardening store in downtown Southern Pines. But it’s not your typical garden store. It’s the perfect place for exploring and sparking ideas for your own garden as you stroll along the carefully cultivated outdoor paths. The knowledgeable staff can answer questions and help you select the perfect flowers, shrubs and trees in addition to the necessary tools and supplies needed to maintain your garden. Along with gifts, an iconic model train and scenic landscaping, Gulley’s offers visitors a trip into history with owner Pete Hunt’s military museum on the property where he displays military artifacts. This year, Gulley’s celebrates its 50th year in business.
“Thank you so much to everyone for supporting our local family business for 50 years and keeping us the #1 garden center in our community.” - The Gulley Family, owners
