Welcome to The Pilot’s 2023 edition of Best of the Pines.
Hello, and cheers to another Best of the Pines, an event so wildly popular it’s been compared to a Taylor Swift concert — minus the global span of fans, the billion dollars in revenue and Taylor Swift. But let’s not get hung up on specifics.
This magazine you hold represents the ninth season now for Best of the Pines. It’s getting pretty hard to top the previous releases’ feats, yet we remain on a roll. The company that operates our balloting software works with thousands of such contests every year and, for the last two years, has named Best of the Pines one of the best in the nation.
Best of the Pines takes a lot of work. Our staff begin preparing for it in January, several months before nominations open. This year, we had more than 2,600 unique businesses that were nominated in the write-in phase. Some categories had more than 100 different nominees written in. For instance, voters nominated 139 real estate agents.
From all of your original suggestions, we narrowed nominees to the top eight in each category. Even still, that amounted to more than 1,100 unique businesses.
Overall this year, we tabulated more than 236,000 total votes cast from nearly 20,000 voters. Not quite Swiftian, but getting there.
No Best of the Pines is ever like the one before it. For instance, given the events last December when someone shot out the lights for four days, we added a new category this year: Best Place to Recharge During a Power Outage. We left that open-ended because “recharge” could mean an outlet for the cell phone, a hot shower or just a place to drop off the little ones for a bit. And family friendly categories continue to grow in terms of nominations and votes. If you have a problem with that, we’ll simply say, “You Need to Calm Down.”
As always, we honor all our great businesses, large and small. Folks come from all across the region to shop, eat and hang out here — not unlike Swifties. Which begs the question, if Best of the Pines were a Taylor Era, which one would it be? Duh. “Lover.” We’re showing love, after all, to all the best our community has to offer. So turn the page and see what we — and you — love the most in this ninth annual edition of Best of the Pines.

Elliotts on Linden Best in Show:
MMoore County has always had a fair selection of higher end culinary tastes, and the “phone eats first” social media trends of recent years have only contributed to advancing our status as a foodie’s paradise.
On the vanguard of all this has been Mark Elliott. If he didn’t write the book on inventive cuisine in Moore County, he’s at least got a few chapters. So it’s no surprise that Elliott and his family of dining businesses were named Best in Show for 2023.
Elliott has been a massive presence on our local food scene since opening Elliotts on Linden in 2000. Today, his ventures include the flagship restaurant in Pinehurst, Elliotts Provisions next door, The Sly Fox Gastropub in Southern Pines and The Roast Office coffee shop in Pinehurst, in addition to a catering company.
Since getting into the business as a teenager in Torquay, England, Mark Elliott has continued to push the menu and local taste forward while staying loyal to locally grown and sourced foods. He approaches everything with a fair bit of humor and flourish, and has assembled a talented, hardworking team that help make everything happen.
This year, Elliott’s companies are taking home eight Best of the Pines awards, including the top spots for best caterer, wine menu, coffee shop and chef, a category he has won three consecutive years.
