As usual, you had no trouble sharing your overall powers of discernment. More than 17,600 of you voted in this year’s Best of the Pines edition, and the total number of votes topped 272,000. That’s twice as many people as voted in municipal elections across Moore County last year. Politicians have some catching up to do.

id you notice some funny images during the campaign and wondered why we chose them? If you grew up in The Old North State, you learned in elementary school that our state bird is a cardinal, the state flower is a dogwood and the state tree is — you guessed it — a pine. We also included North Carolina’s state insect, the honeybee, and the state fruit, a scuppernong grape. We wanted our graphics to pay homage to some of the iconic symbols that specifically make Moore County feel like home. The gray squirrel, our state mammal and a non-dues-paying HOA member of several golf course communities, was one of them

ed’s Corner, the food truck campus on the corner of Old U.S. 1 and Morganton Road in Southern Pines, has only grown in popularity since opening in March.
