e can probably all safely say there’s been more than a fair share of judgment so far this year: Wearing a mask? Not? Got the vaccine?

Didn’t? Returned to the office wearing cozy pandemic wear? Dressed like it was New York Fashion Week? Drove alone in your car with a mask on?

And then here we were, rolling through your summer asking you to turn that judging eye toward all these great Moore County businesses and people.

As usual, you had no trouble sharing your powers of discernment. More than 19,400 of you voted in this year’s Best of the Pines edition, and the total number of votes topped 316,800. That was spread across more than 90,000 votes for the nominating phase and 226,578 for the voting phase.

We didn’t even have to “influence” you with our TikTok dancing skills.

As always, we honor all of our great businesses, large and small. Folks come from all across the region to shop, eat and hang out here. So congratulations to all of the nominees and winners, not only for the awards but, like our opening TikTok move, always putting their best foot forward.

ased on the popular vote, there’s a high chance that you’re familiar with the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines, a true gem in our community. This year, the Sunrise Theater claimed a total of five Best of the Pines awards, including four first-place finishes: Best Family Fun Night (for First Friday), Best Community Music Venue (First Bank Amphitheater), Best Place to Watch a Movie, and Best Place to Give Your Time or Money (specifically in the Arts.) When COVID struck in 2020, the Sunrise had to

close its theater doors to the public for seven months and cancel the entire First Friday season, but they still found ways to entertain. The Sunrise began streaming movies virtually, showing classic films outdoors, selling concessions to-go,and hosting a new monthly pop-up market featuring local vendors. We - and our voters - applaud the Sunrise Theater for their innovations, perseverance, and continued contributions to our community, and are proud to honor them as Best in Show for 2021.
