HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!
ART DIRECTION/DESIGN
obin and I hope you’re enjoying the outdoors with your friends, family, and, of course, fur babies! We love taking our dog to different places and events, and enjoying a cold craft-made beverage, be it a cider, local seltzer, or our favorite IPA. Summer and the craft world in Vermont go hand in hand. In this issue, we spotlight a few historic taverns, show you what a weekend in the Smuggs area might look like, and cruise Lake Champlain on the Spirit of Ethan Allen. We also give you the lowdown on tasting rooms, and, as always, provide a map to get you around Vermont and to all the craft destinations you want to visit. For cannabis connoisseurs, we now offer expanded coverage of top strains and where to find them, plus we talk with the state’s Cannabis Control Board about the future of the industry, and get feedback from several dispensary owners, who dish on the industry’s rules and the challenges and joys of running a dispensary in today’s market. We also have the news you’ve come to rely on: Product debuts you won’t want to miss and what’s happening on the business end of the craft beverage scene. As always, tell us what you think, or throw us a suggestion or two, so we can improve our coverage of the craft beverage and cannabis scene in Vermont!

FUN!
A daytrip on the Spirit of Ethan Allen will leave you high on Mother Nature
Y
ou can go on a boat tour in Miami and see celebrity homes. You can take a cruise around Manhattan and see skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty, but only on Lake Champlain in Vermont, can you find true peace, utter tranquility, and a heaping helping of natural beauty. Or at least, that’s how Mike Shea, owner of the Spirit of Ethan Allen, sees it. “It’s just awesome,” he says. “People come off the boat and they’re just dumbstruck by the beauty they see, and they really appreciate it.” CHOOSE YOUR CRUISE The Spirit of Ethan Allen is a day cruise line that takes you across Lake Champlain. It offers a variety of cruises, some focused on sightseeing and history, featuring narrated tours to both educate and entertain, while others are centered more on dinner with a view. The line also offer cruise options with
live music, or with themes, like murder mystery dinners, and even holiday celebrations. To put it simply, Mike says, “We sell fun.” Mike invited us aboard to see for ourselves, and it’s easy to understand what drew him to the industry. We went on a sunny, almost-warm day in late May, and the views of Lake Champlain were breathtaking. The fun facts that accompanied the tour helped guests notice certain mountain peaks, buildings, and other sights that may otherwise have gone unnoticed. LAKE VIEWS TIMES THREE The boat is divided based on the experience you’re after. If you just want to sightsee and perhaps order from an a la carte menu, you’ll be on the top deck of the ship. If you’re going for a foodie cruise, you’ll be seated in the middle deck inside—that’s where we were. But

whatever deck your ticket is for, you’re free to walk around the boat both before and during the cruise, getting to enjoy the views from all different angles. SCENIC NARRATED TOURS Daily scenic narrated tours travel north toward Lone Rock Point, then loop around Juniper Island, past Rock Dunder, and into Shelburne Bay. From there, the ship heads back through the South End of Burlington. During your tour, you can enjoy a light bite and a drink at the Ethan Allen Café. DINING AND THEME CRUISES The line’s dining cruises combine exceptional cuisine with the breathtaking backdrop of the lake. There are lunch, brunch, and dinner cruise options with names like Lobstah on the Lake, a buffet dinner with lobster, prime rib, and delectable sides, or a brunch cruise with a complimentary glass of champagne or a mimosa and a variety of breakfast favorites, including Grandpa's Blueberry Buckle with crumb topping. Specialty cruises include a Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise and Summer DJ Sunset Series with dancing every Friday and Saturday night through August 30.
24 BREWVIEW Vermont 2025 Issue 2
SPECIAL OCCASION RENTALS The Spirit of Ethan Allen offers special rentals, too. If you’re there for an event, Mike’s got a way to make any occasion special. The boat can accommodate a minimum of seventy-five guests, with the flexibility to host more than 350. So whether you’re looking to book one deck or take over the entire vessel, this exclusive floating venue is perfect for intimate gatherings or grand celebrations.
“We do a combination of corporate events, private events, birthday parties, and weddings,” Mike says, “and then we have our public cruises. People can kayak, they can ride the ferry, they can get a rental, that type of thing,” he says, “but we’re the only boat of our size on the lake.” BOARD IN DOWNTOWN BURLINGTON As the city grew, the Spirit of Ethan Allen switched locations to go along with the
times. It now docks in the heart of Burlington, right along the waterfront. What hasn’t changed, Mike says, is the people. “Vermont has grown more popular as a destination since 1984,” Mike explains. “I would say I had the right idea in the beginning. I just made it better and improved it along the way.” THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SPIRIT OF ETHAN ALLEN Mike’s originally an airline pilot. He started running the Morrisville-Stowe State Airport for a bit, which gave him a chance to learn about business. His folks had a boat in Green Bay, Wisconsin, so he studied the market up there dreaming up entrepreneurship opportunities. He saw Lake Champlain had a ferry boat that took people across. He says he saw a poorly run private tour boat that lacked focus and direction, and he thought, “I can do this.” He made the switch from a job in the skies, where people stared at their watches, tapped their feet, and hurried away, to a position on the water, where people could sit back and relax. Forty-two years later, he’s still cruising Lake Champlain. We got to spend some time in the captain’s quarters, chatting with Captain Carhart. He also enjoys the people on board, though he say the views are hard to beat. Having spent time in the past on a tug boat, and then doing three-week stints on oil tankers, he says cruising Lake Champlain with a boat full of smiling people suits him just fine these days. EVERYTHING ON THE BOAT IS SHIPSHAPE Mike began operating the Spirit of Ethan Allen in 1984. It started as a 149-passenger paddle-wheeler. These www.BrewViewVT.com
25
days, the Spirit is a 363-passenger triple-decker with an onboard galley. This is Mike’s third boat, though he’s technically had four—he tried an overnight cruise boat but decided it didn’t work. The co-captain onboard the ship told me Lake Champlain is massive and requires a good-sized boat to feel steady on the water. Mike says he’s very happy with where things stand right now. “A lot of boats are known for bad food and smelly toilets,” Mike says. Not his. We can attest; cleanliness was top-notch. “During every day cruise, every fifteen minutes, there’s an engineer who walks around, making sure the bathrooms are clean and wiped down, and that plenty of the supplies are in there,” he says. “And we have an onboard kitchen and a galley, so our food is fresh. You order something and out it comes!” FOOD ONBOARD IS DONE JUST RIGHT On their first boat, Mike outsourced
26 BREWVIEW Vermont 2025 Issue 2
the food through a farmhouse in Ferrisburgh, Vermont. When that family retired, the Spirit got its food from the Raddison. Eventually, Mike decided to buy a catering company with an off-site kitchen. But the new boat has a kitchen onboard, so everything is done right there. “I’m not a chef,” Mike says. “I hire great chefs and then get out of their way. That’s my policy.” Menus vary depending on the cruise
you pick. We went for the Monday lunchtime cruise and got a wide selection of food laid out on a buffet table. There were a few different varieties of salad, including one presented in a roll; pasta; a cheesy Italian-style baked chicken; and several desserts to choose from. You could also order appetizers separately. We got the crab-stuffed mushrooms, which were fantastic.

If you’re mostly there to sightsee and grab a quick bite to eat, you’ll still get an impressive menu to choose from. If you want something simple like a pizza or a burger, you’ve got it. If you want something more upscale like a steak or lobster roll, you can have that, too. The newest addition to that menu is the Hippie Burger—a vegetarian option that meat lovers seem drawn to as well. WHAT’S WITH THE NAME? So where did the name of the boat come from? Mike says he knows full well lots of people think of the furniture store when they hear the name Ethan Allen. In reality, Ethan Allen was a hero of the American Revolution, responsible for capturing Fort Ticonderoga from the British. He founded the Green Mountain Boys, the group that policed British provinces to protect land in New Hampshire and New York. And most notably for our readers, he’s the founder of the state of Vermont—the one who lobbied Congress for ratification. Vermont’s Air National Guard is still nicknamed the “Green Mountain Boys” to this day in his honor. “We are Vermont because of Ethan Allen,” Mike says. “He had the spirit of Vermont.”

SMUGGLERS’ NOTCH HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF A QUICK MOUNTAIN GETAWAY
S
mugglers’ Notch State Park in Lamoille County is a narrow pass in the Green Mountains that was first used by smugglers to trade with Canada, which had been outlawed by the US. Smugglers’ Notch separates the highest peak in the Green Mountains, Mount Mansfield, from Spruce Peak. Today, the trail is built out for visitors who want to enjoy the view, as well

as hike, bike, explore caves, go bouldering, and even ice climbing, and since there’s so much beauty to behold, the area lends itself perfectly to a resort like Smugglers’ Notch. THE SMUGGS DIFFERENCE “Smuggs,” as it’s known, is committed to family-first entertainment, according to Matt McCawley, a content media specialist at Smugglers’ Notch Resort.
That commitment not only ensures fun for all ages; it also means that every guest is treated like family. “What truly fuels this passion is that we’re an independent resort, not part of a corporate conglomerate. That independence fosters something rare— authentic pride, deep-rooted loyalty, and genuine care,” Matt says. “You can see it in our coworkers, our neighbors, and especially in how we welcome our
guests. At Smuggs, people care about one another. And your feel that energy and warmth the moment you step through the door.” As for things to do, the resort offers
more than 200 activities, including outdoor water sports, championship disc golf, and the FunZone 2.0, which is an entertainment complex with inflatables, an obstacle course, and www.BrewViewVT.com

arcade games. There are also special events planned, like the farmers’ market and llama treks, where you hike around Smugglers’ notch while llamas carry your gear. BEAUTY ALONG THE BIKE TRAIL If you’re new to the area and want a more guided exploration, Lamoille Valley Bike Tours could be the answer. They offer both regular and electric bike tours along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, plus rentals and sales. Owners Yva and Jim Rose say they

focus on providing guests with the whole Vermont experience, from enjoying the natural beauty of the trails, rivers, and swimming holes to the opportunity for food, fun, and adventure. “What sets us apart is that we provide Rail Trail-specific bike tours and rentals. We operate on a car-free 93-mile trail packed with breathtaking Vermont scenery,” Yva and Jim say. “Our bike tours provide a fresh, yet authentic, means to view, visit, and explore the natural beauty and local attractions,
and get to know the local artisans, shops, and restaurants.” In addition, they provide endto-end full rail shuttle service and have partnered with VT Canoe and Kayak to offer biking tours in the Jeffersonville area that include paddling down the river. outdoors and has worked hard to make their tours more accessible for families. They’ve lowered rates and created a Family Fun Adventure Package through Smugglers’ Notch Resort that allows kids to zip-line or climb for free. “Whether you’re a first-time adventurer or a seasoned thrill-seeker, we aim to deliver a memorable, fun experience that’s both exhilarating and grounding.”
Abby Burt, who spoke on behalf of the company, says ArborTrek is about more than just zip-lining. They also connect people with nature, adventure, and each other as guests soar through forests and over streambeds. “The views are breathtaking, and the connection built between our guide staff and guests is what makes these trips truly unforgettable,” Abby says.
ArborTrek has some other exciting elements, too. They offer a treetop obstacle course with over ninety elements and challenges like wobbly bridges, cargo nets, and log crossings. There are also separate Junior Access options for younger or smaller kids. Abby says ArborTrek loves being part of a community that values the
GOOD FOOD AT A FAIR PRICE After a day exploring Smugglers’ Notch, head over to Martell’s at the Red Fox, owned by Jeffersonville native Matthew Martell. Matthew says he spent time working in Stowe, where they have a wide array of restaurants, but he found the other side of the mountain lacking, so he set up shop ten years ago near Smugglers’ Notch, where his family has lived since 1983. “I wanted to bring Stowe-quality food over the mountain without bringing the huge price tag,” Matthew says. Martell’s offers mostly American fare, with a few fusion dishes thrown in. For instance, the menu might feature American classics like grilled steak and www.BrewViewVT.com

Naturally, Martell’s is a popular place for disc golfers because the course is right next door, and Martell’s is also a good spot to see live music and be serenaded while you dine. They also host charity events, such as the Celebration of Life, which raises money for gastric cancer research. A BREWPUB WITH ELEVATED FARE They say something’s always brewing at Lot Six Brewing Company, where eclectic pub fare is always on the menu. The brewery and restaurant sits at the base of Smugglers’ Notch and is the brainchild of two friends, Adam Shirlock and Justin McCarthy, who are happy to boast about their

Justin says. “The menu rotates throughout the year, and we have weekly specials created by our chef, Jeff Silver.” Owner and general manager Adam Shirlock handles the beverage menus and weekly drink specials..

Vermont’s Cannabis Industry After three tumultuous years, we take stock of the state's legal weed landscape
W
hen Vermont officially opened its adult-use cannabis market in October 2022, hopes were high, both literally and figuratively. With a carefully planned rollout led by the Vermont Cannabis Control Board (CCB), the state positioned itself as a thoughtful, regulation-forward entry in the growing national landscape of legal weed. Nearly two years later, it’s time to take stock: How is the industry doing? What’s gone according to plan? And where does the industry go from here? A PROMISING START VIS A VIS TAX REVENUES Early revenue estimates were modest. In fact, the state initially expected just $130,000 to $250,000 in cannabis tax revenue for fiscal year 2022. Those projections were quickly blown out of the water. In the last quarter of 2022 alone, Vermont brought in over $6.1 million from adult-use cannabis sales. By the end of 2023, that number climbed to more than $15 million. Those funds come primarily from the 14 percent excise tax on retail cannabis, along with the standard 6 percent state sales tax. Starting this fiscal year, 30 percent of the excise
tax revenue, up to $10 million, will support substance use prevention programs through the Department of Health. The rest goes to Vermont’s General Fund, which supports everything, from public infrastructure to local services. IS THE MARKET THRIVING? YES… WITH CAVEATS In terms of both revenue and attention, Vermont’s cannabis industry is holding its own. Sales for 2023 topped $108 million, and the sector added around 700 jobs. The state now has dozens of licensed growers, processors, and retailers. However, the application process for both new retail and cultivation licenses is currently paused due to concerns about market saturation. The CCB issued public statements explaining the decision, which include plans to assess retail density and overall license volume. “From the inception of Vermont’s adult-use cannabis market, there has been a greater emphasis on small, craft growers compared to other states,” says Patrick Crowley, outreach and education manager at the CCB. “This culture of quality and craft in Vermont has been true for other products, such as www.BrewViewVT.com

back, questioning whether the board is overstepping its authority. However, the CCB maintains that protecting public health and ensuring consistent standards are essential. At the same time, the board continues to support small and equity-focused businesses through educational resources, streamlined application processes, and consulting services. WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE INDUSTRY IN VERMONT? Looking ahead, the CCB plans to open its own State Reference Lab by the end of the year. “The addition of a cannabis lab will enable the state to increase the scope and frequency of quality assurance testing throughout the supply chain,” Patrick says. The Vermont Legislature is also considering a cannabis farmers’ market, which could provide more directto-consumer opportunities for small cultivators and manufacturers. While potency caps and other adjustments remain the priority, community support is on the agenda. To that end, approval of applications for both retail and cultivation licenses have been paused temporarily as the CCB evaluates Vermont’s capacity for sustainable growth.
cheese and beer, and it’s also true for cannabis.” Still, the market has had its ups and downs. Challenges like high taxes, tight margins, supply chain hiccups, and persistent competition from the illicit market, still remain. In a 2023 interview with WCAX, James Pepper, chair of the CCB, acknowledged the industry’s growing pains. “This is an industry that, if every other state is a model, consolidates quickly. There’s a high failure rate. Nobody at the cannabis board is popping champagne corks or resting on our laurels,” he says. REGULATING RESPONSIBLY The CCB has been busy not only issuing licenses but also enforcing the rules. In one high-profile case, after consumers reported feeling ill, the board investigated Holland Cannabis. Lab results revealed contamination from unapproved pesticides, prompting a product recall and further scrutiny into the company’s practices. The situation raised larger questions about the CCB’s authority to enforce quality standards. Some in the industry have pushed
40 BREWVIEW Vermont 2025 Issue 2
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR CONSUMERS? For most Vermonters, the cannabis experience has improved significantly. There are now high-quality, locally produced products available in stores across the state. Shoppers can explore strains, edibles, tinctures, and more, all tested for safety and clearly labeled. And for those unsure where to start, retailers have embraced customer education, helping newcomers find what works for them. LESSONS LEARNED AND STILL LEARNING So how does the current state of cannabis in Vermont compare to the vision a few years ago? In some ways, it has surpassed expectations, especially in terms of tax revenue and public support. In other ways, the industry is still finding its footing. For all its promise, the cannabis sector remains complex. Success depends on navigating regulation, managing public perception, and adapting to shifting demand. It also takes patience, something the CCB and many Vermonters seem willing to extend. As Patrick put it, “We’re continuing to build a market that reflects Vermont values.”

The beautiful, thick, fuzzy orange hairs look animated under a scope, showing off the nice bulbous intact trichomes, plentiful in clusters! The moisture content and cure were perfect, leaving that squishy feel in the fingers and fluff on the grind. With the recent Vermont weather and rain, moisture content is hard to judge. Bright Valley’s Motor City presented an easy and smooth roll as we prepped for the toke. The gassy diesel and sweet buttery taste lingered nicely on the dry pull. Lighting up furthered the sweet and gassy profile, hit after hit. Smooth on the draw, with a tickle in your nose and throat, it provided a creative and happy high, phasing into a deep body relaxation for much-needed pain relief at the end of the day. As the warmth and tingle moved through our bodies, we felt lighter and uplifted! It’s the perfect puff to catch up with an old friend, socialize with your crew, debate politics with anyone who will listen, and passionately advocate and dream about this wonderful plant that led us to this wonderful light and loving feeling. A traditional, welcomed, and appreciated classic diesel strain and high! CULTIVATOR: Bright Valley Cannabis STRAIN: Motor City BREEDER: Cookies GENETICS: Motorbreath #15 x Runtz THC: 29.86% TAC: 35.11% TERPS: limonene, myrcene, B-caryophyllene, linalool The Bright Valley team is a lifelong advocate for high-quality cannabis, from the “old days” in Vermont to California’s Emerald Triangle to Maine and back to Vermont. Motor City is a hybrid cannabis strain bred by Cookies. We were pleasantly surprised by the bright sour aromas wafting over our senses with the twist open of the jar. The flower appeared tightly trimmed, including some of the trichomes.

CULTIVATOR: Bog Brook Botanicals, Lyndonville, VT STRAIN: Blue Zushi BREEDER: Dutch Passion THC: 25.27% TAC: 29.26% GENETICS: Zkittles x Kush Mints TERPS: limonene, B-caryophyllene With over thirty years of combined experience, owners Nanette Bilodeau and Lance Person bring passion and expertise to the industry. They believe in the appeal and aroma, from taste to quality, showing their deep commitment to delivering the highest standard of flower to the market. Blue Zushi is noted as an “indica dominant” strain, with dominant terpenes limonene and caryophyllene. Terpene
testing was not provided. After opening the jar and inhaling the aromas, we detected a sour and earthy smell. The beautifully unique tree-shaped bud structure almost resembled curly rosebuds layered atop one another, with lovely hues of cool purple, blueish highlights, and a dark, deep, Kelly green. Upon breaking open, the bud had gentle notes of a delightfully sweet aroma, quickly overpowered by the sour and earthy undertones. The trim was hugging this unique structure and bud shape tightly, with glandular trichomes and deep orange hairs competing for the spotlight with clustered glowing trichomes. Blue Zushi aromas continued to prove themselves on the grind, followed by fluffy flower for an easy, quick roll. The initial dry pull off the joint had a surprisingly sour, yet sweet-floral, taste, with notes of tropical fruit and berries. Tasting that caryophyllene pepper on the first few lit pulls, the sweet once again jumped out right after. Our eyes immediately became heavier, the conversation and worries slowed down, reminding us to slow down, get comfortable, and enjoy the relaxation Blue Zushi provided us! Success! With physical pains decreasing, worries melting away, the pillows started to call us, leading to a great and sound night’s sleep. Make sure you have enough time to sleep it off and get ready for a great morning!
CULTIVATOR: High Altitude Cannabis STRAIN: Ben and Gary’s BREEDER: Exotic Genetics GENETICS: Ben & Berries x Gary Poppins THC: 19.56% TAC: 24.33% TERPS: limonene, B-caryophyllene, linalool, ocimene Dakotah and Danny of High Altitude Cannabis are prime examples of people who are putting positive energy into the plant to extract that same amazing energy out of the plant. Ben and Gary’s pops with dark green leaves and purple leopard print buds, a sight you do not want to miss, so be sure to check it out before you burn it up! The jar exploded with a peppery and earthy aroma, with floral and fruity notes abounding, reminiscent of a fruit punch smell with a Kool-Aid like nostalgia. The bright red hairs stood out against vibrant purples, giving us some eye candy to gawk at before enjoying the sweet and fruity dry pull of the rolled joint. The bud structure was perfect, almost making it painful to bust open. As we did, we exposed a rainbow of colors even more exciting and a waft of pepper from the bright purple trichomes we stared at through our jeweler loupe scopes. We continued to gaze in awe at the amber and milky trichomes filled with terpenes and THC just waiting to be enjoyed. A smooth first pull of the joint created an immediate relaxation as it uplifted our souls, our mind’s eye was smiling and happy! This strain had us breathing deep, feeling mindful and ready to rock our day with focus and the calm, chill creativity we all crave. If you ask us, Ben and Gary’s is a great strain for daytime. CANNABIS Q & A
Three Dispensaries Six Questions BrewView talked to three dispensary owners to get their views on the cannabis revolution and its effect on Vermonters
Q. What is your name and what did you do prior to being in the cannabis industry? Down to the Roots: My name is Andrea (Andi) Goldman, and I am the CEO of Down to the Roots, Vermont’s Destination Dispensary™. I have been involved in the legal cannabis industry since 2014 as an angel investor, cannabis investment fund manager, entrepreneur, and advisor. I am a retired corporate lawyer, private equity underwriter and portfolio manager, Chartered Financial Analyst®, and banker to healthcare companies. Green Leaf Central: Joe Verga here, owner of Green Leaf Central. In a former life I was a roadie, entrepreneur, and business owner. Magic Mann: I’m Meredith Mann, CEO and co-founder of Magic Mann Cannabis. I have a degree in art, and love community organizing. I was the gallery manager at a Vermont State Craft Center for many years, where I was responsible for the livelihood of Vermont artists, helping them to be successful and believing in their work. I feel being a dispensary owner and plant caretaker is very similar. I feel the breadth of responsibility I have daily, to my cultivator and canna community, to do my best for all. Q. A dispensary is a big undertaking, with regulations and guidelines, initial investment needed, and so forth. How do you feel about the state’s cannabis business thus far?
44 BREWVIEW Vermont 2025 Issue 2
Down to the Roots: Overall, we feel pretty confident about the long-term view of the cannabis market in Vermont, but short term, we’re experiencing a lot of pain due to oversaturation of adult-use cannabis retail stores clustered near each other and onerous advertising rules that are especially hard on legal cannabis businesses in Vermont. The bottom line is if we’re unable to find reasonable solutions to problems like these, many legal businesses will foreseeably fail. We truly enjoy providing quality products and exceptional customer service to our clientele for whatever reasons they are consuming it safely and look forward to do so for a long time to come. Green Leaf Central: I believe this is a healthy and promising landscape—an incredible opportunity for the state as it embraces the legalization of marijuana. With a young, vibrant community of students and millions of visitors each year, we’re proud to contribute something meaningful—just like the maple syrup and craft beer Vermont is known for. Magic Mann: We have a long way to go, but I am grateful to be serving our community and the cannabis plant by bringing education and responsible cannabis use to the forefront. This is vital to getting rid of the cannabis plant stigma. Q. We’ve witnessed the variety of customers that come through the doors
at a dispensary. Can you touch on the breadth of customers you see by age and according to specific needs? Down to the Roots: We happily host a variety of customers and a wide range of ages, from twenty-one through senior citizens, from newbies to micro-dosers to legacy consumers. We also serve the “canna-curious” and those who volunteer to us that they consume cannabis because they wish to get away from traditional medications (or they just don’t work for them) to help better control or mitigate their pain, sleep, or anxiety issues (among many other examples)—whether or not they have a Vermont medical card. Green Leaf Central: We see an incredibly diverse group of people come through our doors, from college students to older adults to seasoned cannabis connoisseurs in search of the best Vermont-grown flower—we welcome people from all walks of life. Magic Mann: We like to believe we are inclusive and compassionate at Magic Mann, and to that end, we welcome daily people of all ages, from twentyone-year-olds on their birthdays to ninety-plus-year-old regulars. We see people looking for relief, fun, sleep, mental health, socializing, you name it. Our community is using cannabis both medicinally and recreationally. We like to say you don’t need a reason, if it makes you happy. Q. What do you tell someone who’s never shopped at a dispensary and feels a bit overwhelmed with the choices or the process? Down to the Roots: We help first-time consumers each and every day in a welcoming, friendly, and relaxed environment that is conducive to learning about our comprehensive menu of craft-grown and manufactured products. We have also invested in extensive budtender training, with emphasis on listening to
our clients’ questions and concerns to best match the desired effect with the right product for them. Our most important advice: 1) Ask questions. 2) Start low (for THC content) and go slow. 3) Not every edible is alike and not every flower, so try not to generalize one experience in another state with what Vermont has to offer. 4) When you like a product, get to know it better, including the terpenes, so that you can find those same terpenes in other products that may also work for you. 5) When it comes to edibles, make sure you know if it’s fast-acting or not, so that you wait an appropriate amount of time before consuming more. 6) If you accidentally feel too high, try CBD (without THC) or peppercorns, both of which help many people feel less high. Green Leaf Central: There’s a whole new vocabulary, dozens of strains, and different ways to consume. Our team is here to make it easy. We love helping first-timers feel comfortable. We ask a few simple questions about what they’re looking for—whether it’s better sleep, more focus, or just a fun time—and take it from there. Magic Mann: My favorite thing to do is welcome new customers and new cannabis users, in general. Our motto is “Cannabis Education with No Intimidation.” We want our customers to feel empowered by their choices and know they can trust us and the selective products we offer in our dispensary. Q. What do you enjoy most about your career? Down to the Roots: Helping people is truly the best part of our jobs. Seeing happy faces in our shop is a close second. Knowing that we are making a difference in our community by offering high-quality, tested, Vermont products and supporting local charities and fundraising events makes us feel tremendously proud as an accepted
business partner in Southern Vermont writ large and in the more local Okemo Valley region. Green Leaf Central: I genuinely love cannabis, especially being able to work with the plant every day, talk about it, learn from others, and share that knowledge with our customers. Watching someone discover a strain that really works for them, or getting to introduce someone to high-quality, Vermont-grown flower for the first time—that never gets old. Magic Mann: I like connecting to other humans and sharing my knowledge and passion for the cannabis plant. Also, helping people and seeing cannabis change people’s lives is the most rewarding part of the job. Q. What do you do in your free time and what do you enjoy about living here? Down to the Roots: I love all things outdoors—skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, and in the warmer months, I enjoy paddleboarding, biking, golfing, and hiking. Vermont has a certain mystical quality that is both nature and nurture inspired, with her lush, green-covered mountains and legacy strains thriving in her nutrient-dense soil for generations. Nothing beats a real organic outdoor life in Vermont! Green Leaf Central: I’m a big fan of all that Vermont has to offer. I love getting outside, checking out the local food scene, catching live music, and supporting Vermont’s amazing small businesses. Magic Mann: In my free time, I enjoy my family, clay (throwing pots), and I love traveling and learning about cannabis in other cultures and regions of the world. I am a cannabis science geek and love staying up to date on the ever-evolving industry. www.BrewViewVT.com
