Welcome to BrewView Tampa Bay

T

ampa Bay is home to both of us, though our stories here began in different ways. Becky is a multigenerational Tampa native who has watched this region grow from a place people passed through to one that people plan their lives around. Her grandfather was a master brewer at Schlitz Brewing Company back in the 1960s, and her uncle’s father hand-rolled cigars in Ybor. Those stories brought the culture to life, and there are hundreds more waiting to be told, with new ones being made every day. Bill was raised in St. Louis, a place where beer wasn’t just a drink but part of the community, woven into weekends, ballgames, and backyard gatherings. He has called Tampa Bay home for more than twenty years and has spent that time finding new favorite craft beers with friends or enjoying a beer and a good cigar on one of Tampa Bay’s great golf courses. Our shared appreciation for local beer and lifestyle eventually brought BrewView Tampa Bay to life. Our co-founders and friends John and Robin Gales own Coffee Table Publishing, LLC, and publish BrewView Vermont, as well as two other publications in Vermont. We met up socially last November, as Bill and John are childhood friends, and found that we all share the same appreciation for local beers and lifestyle. We started BrewView Tampa Bay to tell the story of a region best tasted, not just seen. Tampa Bay is rich in culture and full of unique places to visit and things to do, from the cigar houses of Ybor to the breweries and coffee houses of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, and all the small towns in between. These are the places where people still put the phone down, strike up a conversation with a stranger, and just be in the moment. It’s a place that can be a beginning or a place to remember. We’re glad you’re here with us. We hope you will follow us on this journey. Tell us about the places you love and the tastes you can’t live without. We’d love to try them too. Cheers,

FIVEFIVES

25 TAMPA BAY STOPS, SIPS, AND HAPPENINGS FOR SEPTEMBER + OCTOBER

Fall around Tampa Bay means fuller patios, seasonal pours, cooler evenings, and reasons to cross the bridge. Here are 25 BrewView-worthy stops and plans from Tampa to St. Pete, Clearwater, Dunedin, and Safety Harbor. Pick your place and follow your taste buds.

FIVE BREWERIES WORTH CROSSING THE BAY FOR

1. Woven Water Brewing Company - Tampa. Fresh, creative, and never boring. Expect hazies, sours, dark pours, and something you didn’t know you wanted until the first sip. 2. 3 Daughters Brewing - St. Petersburg. A big St. Pete hangout with plenty on tap plus games and music. It is also home base for Halfway There in September. 3. Clearwater Brewing Company - Clearwater. Relaxed, local, and easy to work into a beach-side day. Plenty of styles on tap; firmly neighborhood-brewery in feel. 4. HOB Brewing Company - Dunedin. Right on the Pinellas Trail, HOB mixes house beer, a sprawling patio, and classic Dunedin energy. Ride in, walk in, settle in.

3. Cigar Paradise Royal Lounge - St. Petersburg. Polished, modern, and near Beach Drive. Pair a premium cigar with a drink after dinner and let downtown keep moving. 4. Fusion Cigar Lounge - Clearwater Beach. A cigar and drink make an easy second act after sunset. Comfortable seating and a full bar keep the beach night going. 5. Central Cigars - St. Petersburg. A longtime Central Avenue stop with cigars, drinks, and live music. Drop in between dinner and whatever comes next.

FIVE DATES WORTH BUILDING A NIGHT AROUND

1. Halfway There 2026 - September 5. Tampa Bay Beer Week hits its midpoint with a major tasting at 3 Daughters Brewing. Expect breweries, discoveries, and plenty of new pours.

5. Crooked Thumb Brewery - A shaded beer garden, rotating taps, and a walkable Safety Harbor nearby make it easy to turn one pint into an afternoon.

2. Howl-O-Scream - September 11 through October 31. Florida fall means haunted houses, scare zones, coasters after dark, and a late-night excuse to hit Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

FIVE SPOTS FOR COFFEE BY DAY, DRINKS BY NIGHT

3. BarrieHaus Oktoberfest - October 10. German food, music, steins, games, and beautifully brewed lager. BarrieHaus puts the beer first, exactly where Oktoberfest should start.

1. Tango Brew Coffee & Bar - Tampa. Our kind of all-day stop: espresso and Argentine-inspired bites early, then wine and beer later. Close to downtown and good at either end.

2. Intermezzo Coffee & Cocktails - St. Petersburg. Coffee in the morning, cocktails after dark, all on Central Avenue. Start with cold brew; return when the laptop is closed. 3. eSKPades - Clearwater Beach. Inside Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach, eSKPades goes from coffee and cappuccino to cocktails and small bites when beach time winds down.

4. Clearwater Jazz Holiday - October 15-18. Four days of live music at Coachman Park make an easy excuse to pair a waterfront show with dinner and drinks. 5. St. Pete Second Saturday ArtWalk - September + October. Galleries and studios open across St. Pete, setting up an evening that can drift naturally toward food, beer, or cocktails.

FIVE WAYS TO MAKE IT A BREWVIEW DAY

4. Cork & Beans Coffee House & Wine Lounge - Dunedin. Coffee starts the day; wine gives it somewhere to land. Downtown Dunedin makes this an easy stop during a slow afternoon.

1. Tampa Riverwalk + Tampa Heights. Start downtown, walk north, and follow your appetite. Coffee, food halls, breweries, and river views give you reasons not to hurry.

5. The Scott - St. Petersburg. Inside the historic Cordova Inn, The Scott pairs craft coffee with classic cocktails. Museum day, waterfront day, or date night all work.

2. Ybor City. Coffee, cigars, lager, and brick streets. Wander first; decide the next stop later. BrewView days are better when the plan stays loose.

FIVE CIGAR STOPS TO SLOW THE EVENING DOWN

3. Downtown St. Petersburg. Mix art, local pours, and waterfront time without living in the car. On Second Saturday, let ArtWalk carry you into the night.

1. King Corona Cigars - Ybor City. Cigars, a full bar, and 7th Avenue outside. Few stops connect a good smoke to Tampa cigar culture quite as naturally as this. 2. Corona Cigar Co. Diamond Crown Lounge - Tampa. A deep humidor and lounge built for staying awhile. Here, the cigar gets center stage instead of becoming an afterthought.

6 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

4. Clearwater Beach. Beach first. Cold drinks second. Sunset is mandatory. Then head downtown or toward live music when you are ready to trade sand for the evening. 5. Hyde Park + South Tampa. Begin with brunch or coffee, wander Hyde Park Village, then let happy hour become dinner. Some BrewView days need no bridge crossing.

A BALLPARK, A FAMILY, AND TAMPA’S

NEXT CHAPTER After nearly 17 years of advocating for a Rays ballpark in Hillsborough County, Commissioner Ken Hagan reflects on the vote, his lifelong love of baseball, and what the project could mean for Tampa

F

or Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan, the recent vote advancing plans for a Tampa Bay Rays ballpark at the Hillsborough College site was more than another day at County Center. It was the culmination of nearly 17 years of work. “Right after the county commission vote, it was surreal,”

Ken said. “Having worked on this issue for nearly 17 years and after all of the threats and intimidation that other elected officials and I had received over the years, I couldn’t believe what just happened. I was so proud of the vision and courage our board displayed.” After a few hugs, Ken returned to his office to decompress. His son, who had been in the audience, came

in and hugged him. His daughter watched the meeting from the University of Florida and texted her congratulations. Then came a message from his father. “My father, who wanted this more than anyone, texted me that he had tears in his eyes and was proud,” Ken said. “At that point, the tears started flowing.” The emotion surrounding the vote says plenty about what the project means to Ken personally, but his

vision for the site goes far beyond baseball. He believes the ballpark can become the centerpiece of a development unlike anything Hillsborough County has seen before. “This will be the largest and most transformative development in this county’s history,” he said. According to Ken, the ballpark would serve as a catalyst for an estimated $8 billion to $10 billion in private-sector investment. Plans call for places to live, work, play, and learn, with both a stadium and college incorporated into the development. He said the project

10 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

could bring a new Hillsborough College, expanded transportation choices, 8,000 to 12,000 jobs, and more year-round entertainment. For Rays fans, there is also a simpler part of the equation. The team would have a forever home in Hillsborough County. As a fourth-generation Hillsborough County native, Ken has watched Tampa change dramatically. He remembers when downtown became a ghost town after the workday. Today, Water Street Tampa and Midtown Tampa have helped rewrite that story, and he believes several projects now

underway could do the same for other parts of the city. “I firmly believe the Rays project, MOSI redevelopment, and USF’s on-campus stadium and Fletcher District development collectively will completely transform Tampa and solidify our community as a worldclass city,” he said. For Ken, that future is about more than attracting visitors. He wants young people who grow up here, including his own children, to see Tampa as a place where they can build careers and families. “I am over the moon excited about the future of our community,” he

said. “And I say that not only as an elected official who was involved with these projects, but more importantly, as a lifelong Tampanian with kids who I want to remain here when they graduate.” Ken said Tampa suffered from a “brain drain” for years as graduates left in search of career opportunities or cities with more entertainment choices. He believes expanded corporate recruitment and a growing list of things to do are changing that pattern. “I want our best and brightest to remain in Tampa,” he said. Growth, however, comes

with challenges. Ken points to affordable and workforce housing as an enormous concern, while transportation remains another issue. “Our corporate recruiters have told us for years that our lack of meaningful transit options has been our Achilles’ heel,” he said. Ken believes the ballpark project, particularly because of its proximity to Tampa International Airport (TIA), could catalyze expanded transit options. He also believes public safety and public schools must remain priorities as Hillsborough County continues to grow. To understand why the Rays

KEN HAGAN’S PERFECT TAMPA BAY DAY

For Ken, an ideal day starts early with a workout, followed by a mid-morning round of golf. From there, it is time to get ready for some Tampa Bay sports. “Workout first thing in the morning, play golf mid-morning, and pre-game before attending a Rays or Lightning game,” he said. “That’s my little slice of heaven.” If he gets to choose the golf course, Ken’s pick is Copperhead at Innisbrook, which he describes as “an unbelievably beautiful and quite challenging track.”

project has occupied so much of Ken’s attention for nearly two decades, it helps to go back long before he entered politics. “Baseball was my first love,” he said. “That’s because of my father.” Some of Ken’s fondest childhood memories are of attending Cincinnati Reds spring training games with his dad. His father coached him from his first Little League team through high school and college. Baseball eventually took Ken to the University of Florida. “He taught me about the game,” Ken said. “I never would have realized my dream of playing for the University of Florida without my dad.” Ken has since been able to share baseball with his own children. Now, when he thinks about a Rays ballpark in Tampa, he thinks about other families getting that same

opportunity. “The reason why I got elected was because of my dad. And my love of baseball was also because of my dad,” Ken said. “I really want future generations to be able to create the same kind of memories that I have as a kid with my dad at the ballpark. I’ve been able to share that with my kids.” After nearly 17 years of working toward this moment, Ken can talk about billions of dollars in investment, thousands of jobs, transportation, and development. But behind those numbers is a much simpler picture. A kid sitting at the ballpark with his dad (or mom), falling in love with baseball and carrying those memories with him for the rest of his life. “I want others to have these same priceless opportunities,” Ken said. “I want to pay it forward.”

KEN’S BREWVIEW PICKS

When asked about the beer scene in Tampa, Ken answered quickly. “The beer scene is my wheelhouse,” he said. His favorite breweries include Florida Avenue Brewery, Yuengling, and Wulfaven Brewing Co. For a laid-back drink with friends, he likes O’Brien’s Irish Pub and Skipper’s Smokehouse. His favorite restaurant is Iavarone’s Steakhouse. It’s a place that comes with a family connection spanning three generations. Ken’s father grew up with the founder, Ken grew up with his son, and their children grew up together. “So it holds some meaning,” Ken said. “Family ties. Unbelievable atmosphere. Great food.”

COLOMBIAN COFFEE MEETS INK

HYPHEN Coffee, a Colombian cafe and eatery, has opened inside a tattoo studio on Busch Boulevard. The coffee counter serves Colombian-inspired drinks and pandebono waffles. The cafe opened this month at 2166 W. Busch Blvd., operating inside Hyphen Tattoo Studio under the Somos Hyphen brand. Its tagline is “nothing ordinary happens here,” and the menu sets out to prove it.

The drink list draws from Colombian tradition. The Spritzee is a sparkling Americano finished with house-made fruit syrup, while the Hyphen Sunrise pairs espresso with orange juice. The Americola leans into cola flavor, and the Bombón Latte is sweet and made with condensed milk. Conventional lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos round out the offerings. Food follows the same Colombian thread. The Waffle de Bono presses pandebono, a traditional Colombian cheese bread, into waffle form and serves it with guava sauce. Other choices include dulce de leche turnovers, guava chicharrónes, and a panini melt made with sharp cheddar, Havarti, and spicy aioli. www.instagram.com/somoshyphen

Florida Craft Beer

RAISE A GLASS TO THE GUILD

The Florida Brewers Guild has spent nearly three decades supporting the mostly small, family-owned breweries that make our corner of the state worth a pint

W

alk into almost any brewery in Tampa or Sarasota, and there’s a very good chance that you’re standing in a family business. In fact, the person pouring your beer might also be the person who brewed it. Roughly 98 percent of the state’s breweries are locally or family-owned. That fact shapes much of the Florida Brewers Guild’s work, from helping brewery owners understand the business side of the industry to advocating for changes to state laws.

NEARLY THREE DECADES OF FLORIDA CRAFT BEER

The Florida Brewers Guild has been at this longer than many people realize. Founded in the 1990s by a group of brewers in the Tampa Bay area, it has grown into Florida’s statewide craft beer trade association. Today, the Guild represents about 150 members, roughly two-thirds of which are breweries ranging from neighborhood brewpubs to larger operations with statewide distribution. The remaining members are allied trade partners, including suppliers and service companies that work with breweries across Florida and beyond.

The Guild’s work centers on education, promotion, and advocacy, giving its members resources and a collective voice within the state’s beer industry.

MORE THAN A MONTHLY WEBINAR

For members, education includes webinars nearly every month on topics ranging from brewing and taproom layouts to the business side of operating in a heavily regulated industry. It also includes the Florida Brewers Conference, a three-day gathering that has grown into one of the largest events of its kind in the Southeast. This past July, the 2026 Florida Brewers Conference drew about 500 attendees. It opened with a sensory class where brewers reviewed how to identify and address “off” flavors before releasing a batch. A trade show followed with 50 allied member partners. Conference-goers could also choose from 24 educational sessions over two days, covering everything from opening a brewery to understanding state law. For years, the conference was held in Orlando. Two years ago, the Guild began moving it around the state to bring the organization closer to breweries in different regions. Tampa hosted in 2025,

followed by Jacksonville this year.

MODERNIZING FLORIDA’S BEER LAWS

For Florida’s craft breweries, some of the biggest challenges aren’t found in the brewhouse. They’re written into state law. The Florida Brewers Guild’s legislative agenda this year is focused on modernizing Florida’s beer laws and creating more opportunities for the industry to grow. Three priorities are at the center of that effort, including direct-to-consumer shipping, allowing breweries to sell at farmers’ markets, and getting clarity around the rules governing satellite taprooms. Each of these issues is about giving breweries more opportunities to connect with consumers and grow their businesses while making sure Florida’s laws reflect the way the beer industry operates today. Florida’s beer industry has changed significantly over the past decade, but many of the laws governing how breweries operate have not kept pace. The Guild’s goal is to find practical ways to modernize those laws while creating more opportunities for breweries to grow and compete. www.brewviewtb.com

21

RESTORING DIRECT-TOCONSUMER SHIPPING

One of the Guild’s current priorities is restoring the ability of Florida breweries to ship beer directly to consumers. Florida breweries could offer direct-to-consumer shipping until 2015. Today, Florida Statutes do not allow breweries to ship beer directly to Florida consumers. Despite that restriction, some out-of-state breweries continue to ship beer directly to Florida residents. This puts Florida breweries at a disadvantage because they still can’t legally offer the same service to customers in their own state. For Florida breweries, restoring this ability could open access to customers in other parts of the state. A brewery in Tampa, for example, could reach someone in the Panhandle or South Florida who discovered its beer while traveling but cannot easily find it close to home. For smaller breweries in particular, direct shipping can provide another way to introduce their beer to customers beyond the immediate area surrounding their taproom.

BRINGING FLORIDA BREWERIES TO FARMERS MARKETS

The Guild is also working to allow authorized, licensed Florida breweries to sell their products at permitted farmers’ markets and other off-site events where alcoholic beverage sales are allowed. Florida wineries and distilleries already have opportunities to sell their products in these settings. The Guild would like breweries to have similar access. For a local brewery, a farmers market can be more than another place to sell beer. It can introduce the brewery to people who have never visited its taproom, connect it to the surrounding community, and give consumers a chance to discover beer made close to home.

22 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

CLARIFYING THE RULES FOR BREWERY RETAIL LOCATIONS

The third current priority involves greater clarity around brewery taprooms and off-site retail locations. Florida breweries have onpremises vendor authority connected to their licensed manufacturing facilities, allowing direct sales to consumers at the brewery. State law separately allows the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco to issue up to eight vendor licenses per malt beverage manufacturer or commonly controlled group. The Guild says the relationship between those provisions has led to differing interpretations. Its proposal would clarify that onpremises vendor authority applies at the licensed manufacturing facility while allowing up to eight vendor licenses per manufacturer

or commonly controlled group for approved off-site retail locations. For brewery owners, clearer language could provide more consistency when deciding where and how they can sell their beer. For many breweries, opening an additional location also represents a significant investment in the surrounding community. A satellite taproom can create jobs, bring visitors to an area, and contribute to local tourism while giving the brewery another place to connect with customers.

CONTINUING THE LARGER CONVERSATION

These priorities represent a shift from some of the Guild’s previous legislative efforts. In past sessions, the Guild has spent considerable time discussing self-distribution, franchise law reform,

and tiered licensing fees. Those issues have not disappeared. Self-distribution would allow qualifying breweries to deliver some of their own beer directly to retailers. Franchise law reform addresses the long-term agreements between breweries and distributors. Tiered licensing would examine whether breweries producing relatively small quantities of beer should pay the same licensing fees as much larger producers. The Guild has traveled to Tallahassee multiple times to discuss these issues. While there has been some progress in individual committees, broader changes have yet to pass. Those conversations will continue, but the Guild also wants wholesalers and other industry partners involved in discussions about how Florida’s beer laws might evolve. “When beer wins, everyone wins. There are a lot of other options out

there now, and getting beer back on track is something we need to work together to do. We want to create more opportunities for breweries while strengthening the entire beer industry, and that means working together with our wholesale partners to find practical ways to modernize the system for today’s market,” said Karl Volstad of the Florida Brewers Guild and founder of Civil Society Brewing. A growing beer industry can create opportunities throughout the threetier system, including for breweries, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, and bars.

WHY IT MATTERS DOWN THE STREET

For beer drinkers in Tampa, Sarasota, and across Florida, these policy discussions eventually come back to the brewery down the road. Many of these businesses serve food, host events, and

provide gathering places for their communities. The legislative changes the Guild is pursuing could give small breweries additional ways to build their businesses and reach people. The Guild’s goal is not to choose one part of the beer industry over another. It is to work with its members and industry partners toward laws that better reflect how beer is made, distributed, and sold today. So, the next time you’re deciding where to spend a Friday evening, consider pulling up a stool somewhere local. Behind the taps, you’ll likely find a family and a story, along with an industry working hard to keep both going strong.

If you are a fan of German and Czech-style beers, this is your place. Jim Barrie comes from a family with a brewing tradition going back centuries. The care that goes into brewing and serving definitely shows, and they even use side-pull faucets imported from the Czech Republic. This is a great place to celebrate Oktoberfest. T

ampa is a great beer city. That, of course, is no surprise to those of us who live here. We also count our sister communities of St. Pete, Clearwater, Dunedin, and others as part of the Greater Tampa Bay beer community. According to Brewers Association data, Florida ranks tenth in the country for the number of craft breweries, and last year’s production equaled about two gallons per Floridian over 21. I don’t know about you, but I have been drinking the share of several Floridians. Tampa Bay Beer Week is an annual celebration across the area with many events at a wide variety of locations. Mark your calendars for March 6-14, 2027. The economic impact of craft beer in Florida was $3.6 billion in 2025, according to the Brewers

28 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

Association. Since the Tampa Bay area has just over a quarter of Florida’s breweries, the local impact is likely approaching $1 billion annually. Some leaders recognize this. Visit Tampa Bay developed the Bay Crafted Pass to help tourists and locals find top spots and collect prizes as you check in. Several of my favorite breweries are on this list, including:

ANGRY CHAIR BREWING

This eclectic brewer has some of the best porters and stouts I have ever had. Their Fudge Bucket Imperial Milk Stout and Two Pump Chump Coffee Hazelnut Porter are not to be missed. Don’t go to the taproom if you are expecting trivia games or bingo, but absolutely go if you want to enjoy fresh beverages in a cool environment.

Free Dive IPA and Night Swim Porter have been a staple in my refrigerator for years. The tasting room is huge and has a robust food menu.

MAGNANIMOUS BREWING

This brewery now has two locations, and the IPAs are amazing, but they also have great offerings of pilsners, sours, porters, and stouts. My good friend Matt Horridge introduced me to Magnanimous. Matt has since passed away, but many in the Tampa beer community knew him. Whenever I see a Magnanimous beer on a tap list, I always order one and toast to Matt. The gold medalwinning Juice Lord IPA is a must-have for me when I visit.

TAMPA BAY BREWING COMPANY

I know that many were disappointed when the Ybor location closed in May after 30 years, but come on over to Westchase for a great time and great

beer. Most people will recognize Reef Donkey APA, but TBBC is always experimenting and coming up with a wide variety of beers. It is almost autumn, and it will be time for Gourds Gone Wild Pumpkin Ale. Plus, the Badass Beer Fest with dozens of breweries pouring is coming up on November 7, 2026. I wanted to provide an overview of the depth of quality places we have. It wasn’t always like this. Even though Tampa had breweries going back to the late 1800s, Prohibition in the 1920s and mass-marketed beers in the 1960s ended that. The craft beer scene in Tampa restarted in the mid-1990s. During that time, Dunedin Brewery and Tampa Bay Beer Company opened. In 1999, Yeungling opened its Tampa operations. Then in 2009, Cigar City Brewing was founded. I’m always amused when I hear Jai Alai pronounced by those unfamiliar with the sport. It also became a training ground for brewers who later opened their own breweries in the area. The Hunahpu’s Day Beer Festival grew into an annual event with visitors from all over the country. The event started at the brewery and grew out of that space over the years. The last big festival was scheduled for March 2020, but COVID canceled it. After that, Cigar City stopped

hosting large events in favor of a lower-key bottle release day. Cigar City Brewing and Joey Redner’s vision have had an enormous impact on the Tampa beer scene. Even though Monster Energy now owns the brewery, it is still considered a craft brewer, as are the five other breweries owned by the same company. The good news for the rest of the country is that now Jai Alai and other offerings are also brewed at the sister breweries and can be distributed nationally. Brewers Association reported that the number of craft brewers in the country in 2025 fell to the lowest level in 10 years (including the COVID years). Florida craft brewers grew from 45 in 2011 to 379 in 2025, peaking at 404 in 2023. We are in a period of recalibration where brewers may be consolidating locations and the boom times are over. The good news for Tampans is that the selections are abundant and business seems to have stabilized. So let’s get out there and move the needle on that two-gallons-a-year number.

Alan is a Richmond, Virginia, native who has called Tampa home for 20 years. An early adopter of the craft beer movement, he has visited hundreds of breweries across the country during his work travels and attended numerous beer festivals along the way. When he’s not exploring what’s on tap, Alan enjoys spending time with his wife and family. His four children, one grandchild, and four grandcats all live nearby.

THE BIG COFFEE CUP CAFÉ Gives Back Coffee is just part of how this viral business is serving our community

L

ike trailer tires blowing out on the highway or equipment failing right before a big event, Amr Sharaki faces constant challenges. In the 14 months since he opened The Big Coffee Cup Café, he has turned a profit in only two so far. Yet Amr will tell you, in complete sincerity and with no hint of complaint, that he has never been happier. If you spend a lot of time in the Tampa Bay area, you’ve probably seen the cart. As a giant pink “to-go-style” coffee cup on wheels, it’s pretty hard to miss. Local media coverage of The Big Coffee Cup Café’s history hasn’t mentioned Howard, the Tampa resident who let Amr monopolize his backyard for months on end to build the cart by hand, loaning tools, electricity, and encouragement along the way. It’s an amazing tale of generosity, for sure. And this tale is partly about what’s in the cup, yes, but mostly about what Amr has decided the whole thing is for.

WHAT’S IN THE CUP

The Big Coffee Cup Café is a full espresso bar on wheels. Regulars return time after time for americanos,

34 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

flat whites, cappuccinos, cortados, and Amr’s signature iced lattes and matchas. His flavored drinks are all made with real food ingredients, instead of syrups; the Nutella latte, for example, uses actual Nutella spread rather than chocolate and hazelnut flavorings. Amr’s flat-rate pricing is something you’ll rarely find in other coffee shops. Whether you’re ordering an americano black, a regular cappuccino as it comes, a flat white with an extra shot of espresso, an iced matcha, or one of those Nutella lattes, the price is the same, currently at $8 a cup. And as you’d expect from a place called The Big Coffee Cup Café, it’s not a tiny cup. But you won’t find any food on the cart menu. At least not yet. By his own cheerful admission, Amr is too overstimulated already to add a kitchen to the list of things he maintains. Instead, he plans to eventually collaborate with local bakers, letting those partnerships circulate profit and goodwill across the community rather than keeping it all for himself.

THE CUP COMES TO YOU

The Big Coffee Cup Café has no fixed location. It’s a pop-up on wheels, and the bookings run backward from what you might expect. Instead of Amr having to ask businesses for permission to set up nearby, they reach out to him seeking to collaborate. Amr spends each Monday through Thursday parked at some Tampa Bay area apartment complex (the exact one changes week to week), giving stay-athome parents, people who can’t drive, and remote workers a coffee spot within walking distance. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, he’s at two or three different locations to support business promotions and charity events. That model has taken off to the point of creating its own dilemma. The Big Coffee Cup Café opened in June 2025 and went viral so quickly that by

www.brewviewtb.com

35

January 1, Amr was already booked solid for all of 2026. Not just for every week, but for every single day of the year. For most vendors, a full calendar like that would be a complete win, period. Amr’s response to it says a lot about who he is and what he’s trying to do. Instead of simply turning down requests he can’t fill, Amr’s built a referral list of other small business owners and vendors, and every booking he can’t take becomes a message pointing that host toward someone else who can. “And that gives me so much joy,” he says. In other words, Amr is running his coffee cart business like the proverbial rising tide, driven by a firm belief that having good things occur within the community is worth more than one person holding on to it all.

NOT AN EMPIRE, BUT A COMMUNITY

That philosophy runs much deeper than scheduling alone. Ask Amr about protecting his concept through trademarks and patents, for example, and he just shrugs. “Protecting material things doesn’t

36 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

really mean much to me,” he says. “What’s important to me is how people feel when we interact and how much value and benefit, I have added to the world. That’s what really matters.” Amr means that literally, too. He has become friends with most of his regulars. Rather than upselling those who repeatedly order the same drink, he’s likely to lean over the counter and explain how they can make it at home for a fraction of the price he has to charge for it. If he senses a customer is having a really rough day, he might wave off their charges altogether. Some regulars get so flustered by his habit of skipping the tip prompt at checkout that they throw cash at him, then sprint for their cars before he can hand it back. The blown tires and breakdowns that come with hauling a homemade cart around the Tampa Bay metro have stopped rattling him, too. Amr used to run on stress, treating every

THE BIG COFFEE CUP CAFÉ thebigcoffeecupcafe@gmail.com @thebigcoffeecupcafe

failure as a sign the whole thing wasn’t meant to be. The shift came on one of those roadside days. After a tire blew and he spent hours tracking down a replacement and changing it, he got home late that evening, ready to complain about the day’s hassles. But he didn’t complain, after all. “I just suddenly realized that the valley between a problem and its solution, where we all sulk, is optional,” Amr says. “Instead of going through the despair, I can just build a bridge and get straight to the solution.” Amr is almost glad to run into a problem now, because each one teaches him something he can pass along to others, so they don’t have to learn it the hard way. That, more than the giant cup or the viral clips, is what Amr is brewing; one drink at a time, with The Big Coffee Cup Café. Not an empire, but a community. So, when you spot the cart parked somewhere around the Bay, pull over and get in line. You’ll get a really good latte, and a small reminder that some people are still doing things not just well, but for all the best reasons.

ome businesses begin with a carefully crafted business plan. Others grow from a lifelong passion and a vision for the future. For Jeff Youngblood, founder of Birdies 2 Bogies Cigars, the inspiration came from years of enjoying premium cigars, a career as a first responder, and a desire to build something meaningful alongside his son, Nicholas. “I’ve been working in the EMS field since 1990,” Jeff says. “I started thinking about a post-retirement plan and something I could do with my son. I wanted something for his future.” That idea became reality in 2025 when Jeff partnered with a distributor to create his own cigar brand. In July 2026, Birdies 2 Bogies celebrated its first anniversary, marking a successful first year built through personal relationships, community events, and plenty of conversations around the cigar table.

Brings Premium Cigars & Community Together

From golf tournaments to charity fundraisers, this Central Florida business pairs handcrafted cigars with memorable experiences and a commitment to giving back

WHERE GOLF AND CIGARS MEET

The company name reflects Jeff’s sense of humor and his love of golf. “My golf game goes to bogies,” he says with a laugh. “I created the company name from my golf game. The whole business centers around the theme of golf.” That theme has opened many doors throughout Central Florida,

particularly at golf clubs and charity tournaments. Plantation Palms Golf Club has become the company’s primary home base, providing cigars for Friday Live Music night, golf tournaments, and special events that introduce golfers and guests to Birdies 2 Bogies’ growing selection of premium cigars. Word of mouth has fueled much of the company’s growth. “One event leads to another event,” Jeff says. “Most of our business is through word of mouth through events I am doing at the club and through friends at other golf clubs.”

42 BREWVIEW Tampa Bay 2026 Issue 1

HANDCRAFTED PREMIUM CIGARS WITH TRADITIONAL ROOTS

Every Birdies 2 Bogies cigar begins long before it reaches Florida. The premium hand-rolled cigars are crafted in Jalapa, Nicaragua, using tobacco grown and produced through traditional cigar-making methods. The blends combine Cuban Pilot tobacco with Dominican and Nicaraguan ligero, along with carefully selected Cuban-seed wrapper leaves from Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, or Brazil. The tobacco is aged before rolling,

creating layered aromas and a rich smoking experience. Rather than sealing each cigar in cellophane, Birdies 2 Bogies leaves them wrapped in Nicaraguan newspaper. “It’s just something we do to reflect our appreciation for tradition.” Customers can choose from six flavor profiles available in three sizes: robustos, toros, and gordos. Jeff says the company continues to expand its offerings as customer tastes evolve. “My son is working on some new flavor profiles,” he says. “We’re trying to do pairings and offer suggestions on how to pair cigars with cocktails,

wines, and various foods. We’re excited to see how things will expand.”

MORE THAN A VENDOR AT LOCAL EVENTS

Although golf remains the company’s primary focus, Birdies 2 Bogies has become a familiar presence at whiskey and bourbon tastings, car shows, sporting events, fairs, and private parties. The business creates inviting event spaces complete with tents, televisions, tables, and displays that are fully customizable for each

gathering. Whether hosting a tasting or adding a cigar experience to a private celebration, “We enjoy creating an atmosphere where guests can relax, visit, and discover something new,” Jeff says. Today, Nicholas has joined the company full time, managing the website, social media, and many of the behind-the-scenes responsibilities while Jeff focuses on meeting customers face to face. “He’s 29 and is in a generation that is absolutely great at all of the behind-the-scenes stuff,” Jeff says. “I’m more of the social butterfly at

For Jeff, business success is measured by more than sales. Supporting charitable organizations has become one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. Many golf tournaments and community gatherings include raffle baskets donated by Birdies 2 Bogies, with every dollar raised from those raffles going directly to the featured charity. At other events, a portion of cigar sales is shared with the hosting organization to help support its mission. “A big thing about starting this business has been about the financial gifts we can give to charities,” Jeff says. “This feels good. I have enjoyed this so much over the last year.” Jeff also credits Plantation Palms for helping a small business gain traction. “With my partnership with Plantation Palms, they have been a great supporter of me,” he says. “It’s great to have this support as a small business and a first responder.” As Birdies 2 Bogies enters its second year, Jeff and Nicholas continue building a family business centered on premium cigars, memorable gatherings, and giving back to the communities that have welcomed them from the beginning. Event opportunities can be scheduled by emailing info@birdies2bogies.com.

Journey To Kava:

A LOOK I NSI DE IAN BECKLES’ DI GN ITARY CAFE Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ian Beckles has created an alcohol-free gathering place centered on kava, connection, and community

ou might remember him as a former starting lineman for the Bucs, or you might recognize his voice from his time as Tampa Bay’s WDAE Sports Radio co-host. But today,

Ian Beckles co-owns and operates Dignitary Cafe, or what he calls “the coolest kava bar on the planet.” Five years ago, Ian was tired of drinking alcohol and wanted to make a change. After being introduced to kava—an earthy, relaxing beverage made from the roots of a pepper plant found on the South Pacific islands—he realized there was an alternative to

drinking and the negative bar scene that often comes with it. So, in 2021, he opened Dignitary Cafe, an alcohol-free kava bar operating seven days a week in South Tampa. Today, the cafe’s Rasta vibe, wide product variety, and welcoming atmosphere have distinguished it as a fixture of Tampa’s tight-knit kava community.

www.brewviewtb.com

47

A VIBE WORTH TAKING IN

Dignitary Cafe’s energy is undeniably unpretentious. “What sets us apart is the vibe when you walk in,” Ian says. “I think when you walk into our kava bar, a lot of people will nod and realize that they’re in the place that they’ve been looking for forever.” Ambiently lit with black lights, the inside of the kava house is sprinkled with all sorts of entertainment, including darts, a pool table, a chess board, and arcade games. Glasswork, available for purchase, fills the shelving

on a few walls. Out back, you can find a 420-friendly outdoor patio. Ian describes Dignitary Cafe as a “hippie, dippy kind of vibe.” But that doesn’t mean it’s reserved for certain types of people. “It’s for everybody. When you walk in, everyone feels invited,” he says. “We have people of all ages here,” adds Tom Ponzo, Ian’s business partner. “There are people in their 20s and people in their 60s and 70s who come here.” Open from 10am to midnight Sunday

through Wednesday, and 10am to 3am Thursday through Saturday, people stop by Dignitary Cafe at all hours of the day. During the morning, remote workers bring in their laptops to enjoy a change

of scenery. Later in the afternoon, friends get together for happy hours. In the evening, people from South Tampa come together like any other regular bar to shoot some pool and connect. The difference is the lack of alcohol. “A kava bar is just a bar for people who don’t drink alcohol. It’s not much deeper than that,” Ian says. “When you don’t drink alcohol, you still want to hang out with people, have a good time, and fraternize with some likeminded people. That’s what a kava bar is. It just eliminates all the silliness from people being drunk.”

MADE WITH LOVE

The atmosphere is just one part of what makes Dignitary Cafe unique. The quality of the kava drinks keeps people coming back. “We prepare our product with love,” Ian says. At any given time, Dignitary Cafe has around five different kava varieties available to customers. Other bars in the area usually just offer one or two. They source their kava from a variety of wholesalers, but one of their main suppliers is the Nak, the first kava bar in the United States. The Nak’s kava comes directly from the island of Vanuatu in the South Pacific, and some of their other suppliers provide kava from the island of Tonga. “We try to find as many different places as possible to serve as many different varieties of kava as we can,” says Tom. Dignitary makes its drinks by repeatedly squeezing ground kava root into water, making gallons at a time. This process releases the maximum amount of kavalactones, which is the beverage’s primary ingredient that produces its relaxing effects. Sometimes they turn this liquid into mocktails by mixing it with ginger and cream, but most of their customers enjoy it straight as-is. Their kava comes in two main varieties: mind and body, similar to the

sativa/indica varieties of cannabis. The mind varieties have an anti-anxiety, stress-relieving effect that makes you more relaxed, clear-minded, and sociable. The body varieties help release physical stress, working as a mild muscle relaxant. A few varieties are 50/50. However, the effects are unlike marijuana, alcohol, or any other substances. “It’s so delicate,” explains Ian. “Anybody can drink kava. It’s not like you’re going to drink it and feel all the effects, but you feel the calming.”

ONE BIG, SMALL COMMUNITY

When Dignitary Cafe first started, they set out to develop what they called a tribe. And now, five years later, that’s exactly what they have. “There’s a good 30 people that I know are going to come every day and sit in the same seat. It’s just turned into that, and I think that’s a beautiful thing,” Ian says. Kava is about the community. “That’s the crux of the whole thing,” Ian emphasizes. “In Fiji, that’s what it’s about: the end of the day, getting together, sitting in a circle, drinking their kava, talking about their day. That’s what the kava bar is about.”

Even Hurricane Helene in 2024 couldn’t knock down the Dignitary Cafe and the community they formed. Despite facing two and a half feet of standing water in the building, the cafe stayed resilient. During that time, they never even closed their doors for a single day. “It was a good time to realize who our real family was,” Ian reflects. “It was probably one of the better things that happened to our building in a weird way.”

DIGNITARY CAFE AND KAVA’S EVOLUTION

Just twenty years ago, kava was relatively unknown in the US. Today, more than 400 locations are present

across the country, with around 120 in Florida alone. St. Petersburg and Tampa are hotspots for the growing kava scene, and Ian’s cafe is one of the places leading the charge. Looking back to where things started, Ian recognizes how much his cafe has evolved and how it continues to grow into one of the best kava bars in the Tampa area. “Look for big things for Dignitary in 2027,” he teases. With a laid-back, reggae-like atmosphere, diverse drink options, and one of the tightest kava communities in Tampa, Dignitary Cafe (or DIGS as their customers call it) welcomes everyone to come in, sit back, and take a sip from the ceremonial kava shell.
