Doesn’t seem possible, but this summer was fantastic, all in. And fall looks like it’s going to be the same. Be sure to take time to get out and enjoy it. And let’s don’t forget that a lot of places are short-staffed and working their tails off. Please be kind and considerate.

In this issue, we check in on all kinds of gems in the Vermont craft scene. First up, Black Flannel Brewing & Distilling Company. Chris Kesler, owner and Cicerone, fills us in on all that’s going on. And wow! Classes in beer making, Chef Christian Kruse creating some delicious choices, and Bloody Marys that have my 88-year-old mother-in-law raving! And she knows her Bloody Marys. Speaking of beer classes, it is about time we introduce you to Steve Parkes—like we really need to. As owner of Drop-In Brewing Company and owner and lead instructor of American Brewers Guild, Steve’s rep precedes him. Steve has been making his mark on the state craft scene for years, and we’re happy to finally spotlight him. And new to the scene, Lucy & Howe in Jericho shares with us their brewing philosophy.

Mead anyone? If you’re going to talk Vermont craft mead, you have to talk Groennfell Meadery in St. Albans. What a great group of people that are having a blast bringing mead to the scene.

Fall foliage, anyone? Another overdue story to tell is that of Vermont Distillers in Marlboro. First, you have to take a ride to their place on Route 9, sample their delicious spirits, and take in the beauty as you sit on top of the mountain. Beautiful.

But the story goes much further than that.

And a story 30 years in the making. We congratulate and celebrate 30 years Woodchuck cider has been doing what they do: continually producing favorites!

Beer and Cheese How to choose Pairing 101 the perfect cheese for your beer (and the perfect beer for your cheese!)

WHAT’S BETTER THAN A FRESH VERMONT CRAFT BEER? Enjoying said beer with a perfectly paired cheese.

With over 100 different styles of beer to choose from (not to mention all the new styles brewers keep coming up with) and many more cheese varieties, the combinations are endless.

But not all beer and cheese pairings work. How do you decide which cheese and beer to pair together? Read on to learn how to find the perfect pair.

WHY BEER AND CHEESE? Toasty, nutty, funky, fresh, herbal, floral—beer and cheese share many flavor descriptors, making them natural partners. The carbonation of the beer helps to cleanse your palate between each rich and creamy bite of cheese. Contrasting tastes, like salty and sweet, umami and sour, bring out complexity not experienced by beer or cheese alone.

PAIRING RULES First, we want to match intensity. A big, bold barleywine isn’t going to do anything for a mozzarella, and a blue cheese will overpower a Kölsch.

Similar flavors that complement can enhance each other once combined or make an entirely new flavor experience.

Try a nutty, aged Gouda with a malt-forward beer such as an Oktoberfest or a brown ale.

Contrasting flavors may highlight or intensify a particular flavor. A porter or stout may taste sweeter when paired with a bright, creamy chèvre.

Diminish an overpowering flavor with the right pair. While a blue cheese can easily overpower a Kölsch, a barleywine might help reduce the intensity of the blue, making it more palatable with the beer than on its own.

GETTING STARTED It’s easy to become overwhelmed with possibilities, so start small and start with what you like.

Start with your favorite cheese, then come up with one or two beer styles to pair with that cheese. Try a few different examples of each style since every brewer makes their own version of a style. An IPA from one brewery may pair perfectly with your favorite cheddar, but an IPA from a different brewery might miss the mark.

For your next tasting, start with your favorite beer and pair it with complementary and contrasting cheese flavors.

Experiment with different cheeses on that one beer.

TAKE NOTES! Make note of what works and what doesn’t work. Once you try a few combinations, you’ll start thinking about other cheeses to try with that beer or different styles of beer to test. You’ll get a feel for what types of pairings you like and don’t like. Before you know it, you’ll create pairings in your head as you walk through the beer and cheese aisles.

Pick a theme. Oktoberfest season?

What better excuse to try an assortment of Oktoberfest beers from various breweries. Grab some cheese, like Gouda,

alpine, or cheddar, and mix and match.

The bigger the group, the more pairing options you can try. Ask guests to bring a mix of beers and cheeses to experiment with. Provide a theme or a few style suggestions for best results. Shop at beer stores that sell cans or bottles as singles; then you can experiment with more variety.

Everyone’s palate is different, and what works for one might not work for another.

Experiment and try different options. And most importantly, have fun! U

n a recent warm summer evening, the biergarten at Black Flannel Brewing & Distilling Company was filled with laughter, live music, and even a few dogs happily lapping up water. Inside, conversations

company direction, vendor relationships, quality control, and distribution. Chris is a serious and thoughtful entrepreneur who has worked tirelessly to keep Black Flannel thriving, even during immensely challenging circumstances.

Chris, a two-time winner of the Vermont Homebrewer of the Year, started brewing as a hobby on his 50th birthday. In www.BrewViewVT.com

2017 he entered his first beer competition, a state-wide competition called Make The Cut. His Disco Montage New England IPA scored in the top 2. He then quickly realized that brewing might be more than just a hobby. Chris went on to earn a certificate from the UVM Business of Craft Beer program. He has hosted Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and Certified Cicerone study groups, and the Greg Noonan Memorial Homebrew Competition.

Along the way, he has formed friendships rooted in the love of beer education with the Green Mountain Mashers. And all of this while running a marketing company called Earthlogic.

A FIRST BIRTHDAY Today, Black Flannel Brewing and Distilling is just over a year old and has rightfully earned its place as a top brewery, distillery, and restaurant in Vermont’s crowded craft beer landscape. The 15-barrel brewery is unique in many ways, most notably

in that Black Flannel has four certified Cicerones and multiple beer judges on staff. “A certified Cicerone is similar to a sommelier for wine,” explains Chris. “It is a professional credential earned through work experience, intense study, and a four-hour exam designed to be one of the harder exams a professional will take."

There are only sixteen Certified Cicerones in Vermont, and it’s no surprise that Black Flannel has four of them. Chris happens to be one of them. Additionally, Black Flannel is the only Vermont brewery with an on-site sister distillery.

"Starting a business is hard. Starting a combo brewery/restaurant/distillery is harder. Starting in the middle of a global pandemic… well, you can imagine,” Chris says. Yet, his optimism has remained and has helped his team grow. “I’ve aged quite a bit in the past year. But I feel strong, and my own optimism is at an all-time high. Seeing the look on the faces of our delighted guests continues to add fuel

to the fire, and the love we receive on social media on a daily basis makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

“Our team came together naturally, with every member drawn to the Black Flannel vision. They happen to be some of Vermont’s best in their respective crafts,” says Chris. They include Head of Brewing Operations Dan Sartwell, Head of Beer Education & Brewer Drew Cunningham, Head of Barrel Program Aaron Ritchie, Spiritmaster Dave Mosher, Head Distiller Travis Johnson, Executive Chef Christian Kruse, and Head of Restaurant Operations David Nyhan. to fiscal responsibility.” As the Black Flannel website promises, “Everything we offer to our guests will be a carefully considered and crafted experience.”

Chris’s vision for Black Flannel was unique from the beginning. He is committed to encouraging “passion, creativity, and collaboration” within each operation and is passionate about creating opportunities for each craft to collaborate with each other. As an example, the brewers and distillers have collaborated with four of their products to produce both a spirit and a beer with the same batch of grain, using a technique known as parti-gyle.

FAN FAVORITES Black Flannel is careful to pour only excellent beers. They have a rigorous tasting panel, dubbed the “Flannel Panel,” and frequently test their products, often at Zymology Labs, a local beer testing lab run by Certified Cicerone Amy Todd.

While Black Flannel offers classic flavors, they aren’t bound to tradition. “We focus on traditional styles but really like to experiment,” says Chris. Their bestselling beers are their New England IPA, a Kolsch-style ale, and Märzen. “We tend to brew what we love to drink, and our brewing staff are big lager drinkers,” he adds. As for spirits and cocktails, Black Flannel has produced over a dozen unique varieties of spirits including whiskey, genever (Dutch gin), rum, tequila, and “garden spirits” made with fruits and vegetables. "The beer cocktails that infuse both our beer and spirits are quite popular," he adds.

RAVEN AND ANVIL Black Flannel’s mascot is a raven and anvil because it “represents the practical application of craft and the physical work that goes into it,” says Chris, adding that

he looks forward to offering craft beer educational classes again in the fall. He also holds in-house education for staff who are eager to pursue Cicerone study. “We believe an educated customer is a loyal customer, and when we have a hand in helping to educate our guests, they will appreciate our approach and quality,” he adds.

While the first year of Black Flannel presented many obstacles due to the pandemic, Chris is proud of what his team has accomplished. “We all get the distinct feeling that we’ve only begun to scratch the surface of what is possible,” he says. “We are very excited for what the future brings, and we are inspired and humbled to be a part of the tight-knit communities of Vermont brewers, restaurateurs, and distilleries. Pioneers of Vermont Wine Expand Shelburne Vineyard buys Lincoln Peak Vineyard

B

ack in 2001, a writer’s encounter with budding winemakers sparked a twenty-year relationship between Chris Granstrom and Ken and Gail Albert, owners of Shelburne Vineyard and the brand-new owners of Granstrom’s Lincoln Peak Vineyard in New Haven. Granstrom, who

wrote about Shelburne Vineyard and two other pioneering Vermont winemakers for Vermont Life, started out as a strawberry grower.

LINCOLN PEAK HISTORY He soon added a grape nursery to his business and became one of the first licensees of the University of Minnesota for their new-at-the-time cold-weatherloving Marquette grapes. Seeing the success of the grapes at other local vineyards, including Shelburne Vineyard, he converted his nursery into a full-blown vineyard and winery, featuring not only the Marquette grapes but also the La Crescent variety, a white grape with a wonderful apricot aroma.

Ken remembers the camaraderie among the grape growers. “We have been getting together each winter, comparing our wines, commiserating, and discussing.” He also notes that both Lincoln Peak and Shelburne Vineyard won best red wine in show for several years in the University of Minnesotamanaged International Cold Climate Wine Competition.

READY TO DOWNSIZE Over the past couple of years, however, Granstrom wanted to downsize his operation. He narrowed his focus to red wine production, which decreased the amount of land he needed for grape growing. When Granstrom offered a www.BrewViewVT.com

thought about it… we used the phrase, ‘We became addicted to his grapes.’”

The Alberts felt comfortable taking over Lincoln Peak because they knew Granstrom well and knew the grapes were grown at a similar quality level to their own. Plus, as Gail explains, “It cut out three years of waiting for new grapes to reach production.”

LINCOLN PEAK TASTING ROOM REMAINS OPEN lease agreement for part of his property to Shelburne Vineyard, the Alberts jumped at the opportunity. “He leased about half the acreage to us,” Ken says. “We needed the grapes. If you plant a grapevine today, it would be three years before you got the first small amount and five years before you had any significant production.”

Then, in the winter of 2020–2021, Granstrom decided to sell his winery. “We and our longtime partner, Sam Coppola, had not initially planned on buying the whole thing,” Ken says, “but the more we

Although the final sale won’t be wrapped up until the fall, Shelburne Vineyard is currently managing the tasting room at Lincoln Peak, where the retail operation is open three days a week: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Though some Lincoln Peak vintages are still available—“Precious little,” according to Ken—about 90 percent of the wine sold there is created by Shelburne Vineyard. “We wish we had more Lincoln Peak,” Ken says. “We will continue at least one label of theirs—the Marquette.”

The Alberts plan to close the New Haven shop for the winter season. “We have always done some events here [in Shelburne],” Gail says, “and Chris did events as well, but we took a break from hosting anything there this year until we get ourselves organized and settled.”

However, Shelburne Vineyard plans to host some pop-ups in Middlebury over the coming months, “To introduce us as the new owners, let them get to know our people,” Gail says. “They had established a community, and customers like that sense of community, that sense of knowing people at the vineyard.”

Ken adds, “I’ve been down there during the weekend retail sales, and people in the area are happy that someone relatively local is taking over rather than some brand X coming in and not understanding traditions.” U www.BrewViewVT.com

raft beer is the lifeblood of Vermont, and Vermont Beer Makers in Springfield is a pillar of the industry. There have been some changes in name, location, and ownership over the years, but the brewery was founded a quarter of a century ago and has been pursuing the innovation of one-of-a-kind beers ever since.

THE VISION Originally called Trout River Brewing and based in Lyndonville, the company was purchased and re-envisioned by a group of young Springfield entrepreneurs in 2014 in the hopes of creating something truly unique.

Kelen Beardsley and Gabe Streeter wanted to add their own creative spin and

innovative ideas to the established brand and produce high-quality craft beer from the heart of their hometown. The town was an important part of their lives, and they wanted to contribute to the community they had grown up in by providing a space for people to gather and unwind.

It was a long road for the team, but any patron of their tasting room will

tell you that their passion for craft beer has helped them to maintain the legacy of the original Vermont craft brewery.

According to Kelen, the idea began back in 2011. “[Gabe and I] sat on the porch of

his family’s log cabin home at Tree Farm Campground and contemplated creating a brewery,” he says.

THE EXECUTION They finally bought Trout River Brewing after a few years of planning, and they owned and operated the company until last year. Then they were approached

by Paul Belogour, Borden James, and Norman Connell, who wanted to purchase the brewery and help with rebranding. This new team’s vision for

the place was perfectly in line with the original dream, so Gabe and Kelen jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with them.

And so Vermont Beer Makers was founded, as Kelen puts it, “On the idea of creating our versions of traditional style ales, while also testing the limitations of innovative and creative brews.”

Kelen and Gabe), so without further delay, let’s talk about the beers that make this brewery so special. Everyone at the brewery is passionate about creating new and amazing craft beer, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

“I think our biggest challenge is navigating the ever-changing landscape of craft beer, trying to stay ahead on trends, and constant research and trying to understand what people are looking for in a craft beer experience,” says Kelen. “Beer drinkers are constantly seeking out new things and trying different beer styles.

We, as brewers, are constantly trying to create unique and innovative beer to pique the interest of craft beer fans. It is an exciting—and challenging—time to be a part of the industry both as a consumer and as a brewer.”

Finding Fortune amidst a Pandemic Lucy & Howe Brewing Company fires up ahead of schedule

F

or some, the COVID-19 pandemic put dreams on hold.

For Jesse Cronin, owner and brewer at Lucy & Howe Brewing Co. in Jericho, it fast-tracked his plans for opening his own brewery.

When life came to a screeching halt in March 2020, Jesse found himself home with his two young children while his wife, the superintendent of the Montpelier Roxbury School District, tended to her district’s plans for handling the rest of the unusual school year. He continued working remotely for a while but found that balancing that with teaching his children—as well as a couple of nieces and neighbors—an unsustainable mix.

THE PLAN GETS A HEAD START An avid homebrewer for more than a dozen years and a former head brewer

at Magic Hat, he had planned to start his own brewery one day. “I was planning on soft-launching over this past winter,” he says, “and gearing into larger—larger in quotes—production this summer.”

The pandemic gave him the time and opportunity to speed things up: “I thought I might as well take the time that I’m not spending teaching the kids to fire

up this brewery a little bit ahead of schedule. I was very fortunate, compared to a lot of people.”

Having spent time at a commercial brewery taught Jesse some important lessons about making good beer. “I knew the mechanics of brewing going into Magic Hat,” he says, “but one of the things that was a big learning moment for me was all of the different things that can influence whether you can achieve consistency from batch to batch.” Now, working for himself, he combines this knowledge with an interest in creating some types of beers that might not be possible in a larger-scale operation.

SMALL BATCH GOODNESS Working in a an old summer kitchen off the side of his house, Jesse creates his lineup using a barrel-and-a-half brew system (which holds around 45 gallons), tanks that hold close to 90 gallons, and two fermenters. “I really can do only one batch per week,” he says. Deciding what to brew next opens up unlimited opportunities for him. He does make several beers over and over. “I haven’t sent anything to the graveyard yet!” he says. “Everything is sort of a possibility.

It’s a combination of what is popular—selling is important. But it also touches on a relationship with customers. If they have an appreciation or www.BrewViewVT.com

fondness for something, I want to make sure that I can continue to supply it.”

He also finds inspiration at local markets and producers, whether he receives some locally produced honey he can incorporate into his project, or he sees a nice basket of fresh strawberries, as happened recently. “Next week is a strawberry sour—Strawberries in a Cage, which I did last year—with strawberry and rhubarb. It’s a light sour, not really punchy.”

OPEN TO THE POSSIBILITIES He credits his local customers with assisting in his success. “The people in Jericho have been great,” he says. “They’ve been very accommodating because I put out some styles that are not everyday beers, like Touch of Wisdom, a golden strong. There’s a maple lager, and I’ve got two sours and a cherry and pomegranate bière maison right now.

The people around here are awesome— they’ll try anything.”

He also points to the proliferation of breweries and beer lovers that make Vermont a supportive place to open a small brewery. “We’ve got an abundance of riches,” he says. In addition to the state’s larger beer makers, he sees a space for the little guys. Likening the Green Mountain State to an older European model, he says, “When you’re in Belgium, every town—and in larger towns, every neighborhood—has its own brewery, and it works. There’s enough demand, and there’s enough supply, so it works out fine.”

ow much wine could a woodchuck chug if a woodchuck could chug wine?

The answer is 30 years’ worth of CIDER! TOO MUCH OF AN APPLE THING Apples are the key ingredient in cider, and once upon a time, the Joseph Cerniglia Winery struggled with excess “Adam-tempters.”

Cerniglia’s vintner, Greg Failing, began to experiment with the lost art of cider making to avoid wasting the fruit. One can only bake so many pies. Though hard cider had been popular in Europe, Greg never felt the international recipes would appeal to woodchucks or flatlanders, so he began messing with carbonation and fermentation.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR HARD CIDER, ONE BIG LEAP FOR WOODCHUCK The result of Greg’s 1991 tinkering was entered in the Great Albany Beer Festival in 1993. Woodchuck’s Dark and Dry won the People’s Choice Award, earning it a tap at Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York. This small step for hard cider was a big leap for Woodchuck. The win enabled Woodchuck to move production from a Proctorsville two-car garage to bigger digs. What started out in 10-ounce bottles, where

according to the company’s website, they “joined forces” with Stroh Brewing and began producing from a space in Springfield.

Several owners later, Woodchuck’s Hard Cider Amber is still the original recipe. Bridget says, “The management team has always been consistent, and the production team has always been consistent.” It’s that commitment to stability that keeps Woodchuck at the top of its game.

Consistency within the beverage company means they stick to the core values crafted with that first award-winning formula.

So even though Woodchuck has a parent company, “We still feel like we are a mom-and-pop. Those original values are still how we operate, despite the fact that we are sold nationwide,” says Bridget. “Our ethos as a business very much remained the same as it always was from the beginning.”

FEEDBACK BREEDS QUALITY

the final two ounces had to be poured by hand, grew into nationwide nectar.

Woodchuck grew one fan at a time with tastings in parking lots, bars, the cidery, and hundreds of thirsty tourists purchasing souvenir six-packs. The demand for this beverage, named after a land beaver, increased. UPS even became an unwitting partner—delivering kegs of Woodchuck to points beyond New England’s borders.

GROWING PAINS As Woodchuck’s distribution grew, so did the company.

Throughout its 30 years, Woodchuck has had several owners.

Currently, Woodchuck belongs to Northeast Drinks Group, LLC. Bridget Blacklock, Chief Commercial Officer, says, “As with any industry when going through periods of massive growth or changes in trends, there are opportunities for businesses to change hands.” And change hands it did. In 1996,

Woodchuck Hard Cider is very much driven by quality. They continually study the food and beverage industry, minding trends and listening to their demographics and fans. They frequently experiment with new liquids at the cider house, and the national sales team often brings home ideas from the field. Cidermaker John Mateson develops multiple variations to be narrowed down through sampling and “feedback from internal employees, friends of the brand, and fans in the Cider House,” says Bridget.

Woodchuck’s anniversary represents the history of a brand and the history of an entire beverage category. How does one celebrate 30 years of consistency, quality, and feedback? Woodchuck will commemorate the milestone on social media showcasing brand highlights and launch a retail store on their website selling 30th-anniversary limited-edition apparel and glassware. For a short time, consumers can savor fan-fave varieties like Blueberry and Barrel Select. Also, artists and content creator-fans will be able to share their appreciation of the brand through their own work and broadcast it on Woodchuck’s social media channels.

He’s spent decades as a brewmaster all over Great Britain, California, and New England, while also writing, teaching, and judging all things beer. His list of accomplishments is enormous, but you’d never guess from his humble manner and kind personality. He currently spends the bulk of his time with Drop-In Brewing and the American Brewers Guild, as well as judging the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup every year.

Entrepreneur and Family Business Man Vermont Distillers’ Ed Metcalfe, Jr.

Ed Metcalfe, Jr., one-time owner of what was at the time the only winery in Vermont, has been in the libation business more than once. He has a degree in economics from Bryant University and has held positions in finance but seems to navigate toward liquid gold. Ed, supported by wife Linda and joined by sons in the family business, definitely demonstrates that variety—or is it maple bourbon—is the spice of life.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The year was 1985, bacon was $1.65 per pound, and Ronald Reagan was president of the United States. Coke introduced a new taste, and Ed decided to open the North River Winery.

At the time, North River was the only winery in Vermont. We finally lost that New Coke aftertaste, and Ed sold the winery in 1997. After an eleven-year hiatus from crafting adult beverages, Ed launched Vermont Distillers. “It was something I always wanted to try since I sold the winery,” says Ed. In 2008, Ed entered a business plan competition sponsored by the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation and won the $10,000 grand prize. Initially, Vermont Distillers only produced three products. In 2021, they have five cordials, two bourbons, vodka, and a few seasonal offerings. The vodka is

Catamount, and the others retail under the name of Metcalfe’s. Ed says, “I have done many things over the years, from banking to managing a large liquor store.” He has sold wine, made wine, and managed a natural history museum.

Let’s not forget that stint as a hot air balloon pilot.

He is a dive-right-in kind of guy. So when he began both the winemaking and spirit-making adventures, he started at square one. “Since I did not have much experience in either product, wine or spirits, it started out with a lot of experiments to get the products the way

we wanted them,” says Ed. Good thing he did time as a high school science teacher to brush up on conducting experiments.

ED’S TWO SONS As proprietor and president of Vermont Distillers, Ed is chief cook and bottle washer, as they say. Everything from the books to the production schedule falls under his purview; he has even been known to pour at tasting events. Joined in the business by sons Augustus (Gus) and Dominic, the three divide and conquer the workload. Gus and Dominic are bringing to the family business what they learned in college and at other gigs.

Gus is a graduate of Vermont Technical College with a major in horticulture.

He works at the distillery in Marlboro, operating the still and managing all things under the production umbrella.

Dominic, a UVM grad, has a degree in

studio art focused on graphic design and a minor in music. He manages the Burlington Tasting Room and handles all things marketing and events.

Even though he has trusted help, Ed would like to have more free time. “I don’t have any spare time. I would like to semi-retire.”

SURPRISE! Many things surprise entrepreneurs. Selling about 6,000 cases of liquor totaling more than $1M in sales is definitely breathtaking. But what shocked Ed even more is “How popular our maple bourbon has become. The market exploded.” While Gus is astounded by “the amount of different kinds of [liquor] we can make. The possibilities are almost endless.”

All three have ideas for expanding the portfolio. Ed and Gus would like to see a gin under their label, and Dominic would like to craft “unflavored whiskey,” he says. “I love our maple and honey bourbons, but I am excited to eventually release some straight whiskey.”

Some of the varieties are only available in New England, and in some cases, only in Vermont or at the tasting rooms. Isham Family Farm Hosts Second Annual Fall Festival LONGTIME STEWARDS OF THE LAND

This autumn marks the second year the Isham Family Farm in Williston will hold its Fall Festival. It began last year as an extension of their summer farmers’ market, which had been a huge success.

A FAMILY FARM FOR FIVE GENERATIONS The farm’s 108 acres of land has been farmed going back to 1788 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Formerly a dairy farm, operations now include maple sugaring, a Christmas tree farm, and crops of blueberries, raspberries, corn, and sunflowers.

At the helm (or tractor) of the Isham Family Farm are Mike Isham and his wife Helen Weston. “Farmer Mike,” as he is

known, is the fifth generation at the farm and grew up milking cows and doing all the chores that make a farm go. Helen, who grew up in Bristol, is a retired music teacher who now works full-time on the farm.

STEWARDS OF THE LAND The Isham family takes its role as stewards of the land seriously. When Mike’s father David was a boy, there were 13 farms nearby. In Mike’s youth,

there were only six. Now, there are no others. Only Isham Family Farm is left. In order to conserve the farm and ensure its survival for future generations, David sold the development rights to the Vermont Land Trust in 2002.

The Isham family is committed to creating a healthy environment “for the four B’s: birds, bees, butterflies, and bugs.”

To that end, they do not use herbicides or pesticides. To control pests in the berry patches, a flock of 50 chickens patrols the lanes between bushes. To keep weeds down in the pumpkin patch, the Ishams rototill around the young plants through early summer.

FUN THROUGH THE SEASONS Summertime is an ideal time to visit. When raspberries and blueberries ripen in July, visitors can pick their own. Picnic tables throughout the grounds are a perfect spot for lunch after filling your quart and pint containers with plump and juicy berries.

The farm also boasts Oak View Hill Trail, a web of trails that winds through the sugar bush of the Isham property. Enjoy the scenic woods, with views of Button’s Pond and several historic stone walls.

Autumn at Isham Family Farm is not to be missed. Visitors can enjoy tractor-drawn wagon rides, getting lost (and found again) in the corn maze, and of course, pumpkin picking. The two-acre corn maze is created fresh with a different pattern every year, making annual visits a treat.

In the winter, the insecticide-free Christmas tree farm is open for folks to cut their own. Handmade balsam wreaths are also available.

NOT JUST FARMING The farm is a working farm primarily used for agriculture, but the Ishams have broadened their offerings in the last few years. After a two-year restoration project, the Ishams opened the former dairy barn for weddings, receptions, and special events. They also began holding a farmers’ market every Tuesday in the summer and a fall festival on the weekends.

Helen worked with the state guidelines to come up with a way to have groups of people at the farm in a way that would keep everybody safe.

“Everybody who came was fantastic about it,” says Helen. “People just wanted to be outdoors and chat with each other.

People were social distancing. It was wonderful. It was nice to see our community pulling together and still being interactive.”

The Tuesday farmers’ market was a huge success, seeing about 200 to 400 people come through. Some of the market nights have a theme, like “Celebrate Youth,” where young people are encouraged to be vendors. This year sixth graders had a make-your-own necklace booth, a fourth grader who made popup birthday cards, and a high schooler who made 30 jars of raspberry jam—and sold

all of them. Another popular theme is the Halloween costume night.

CELEBRATE AUTUMN The Isham Family Farm Fall Festival will be held beginning September 26. The Festival will run every Sunday through October 17 and will feature a full slate of fun fall activities. The Festival is a continuation of the farmers’ market and turns the market into a celebration. Along with pumpkin picking, wagon rides, and the annual corn maze, the Festival will also host live music and vendors. Visitors will find everything from fresh produce from local farms to breads, maple syrup, and crafts, including pottery and jewelry.

The Crazy Cotton Candy Lady will be on hand with her colorful treats, and hungry visitors can enjoy Lareau Family woodfired flatbread pizza.

Giving back to the community is an essential value to the Isham Family.

“Supporting local small businesses is one of the big things that keeps Vermont so great,” says Helen. In that spirit, the booth fee is waived for all returning vendors.

Festivities will kick off with a performance by O’hAnleigh, a quartet of Vermont musicians who “bring the spirit of Ireland to New England” through traditional Irish songs, literature brought to life through music, and original songs.

Musical acts on other festival days will include jazz, country, and swing musicians.

The Festival will be held at the Isham Family Farm sugarhouse on the west side of Oak Hill Road across from the barn.
