The gold rush in Ballarat was a period of social, political and physical upheaval. At the height of gold fever, Ballarat was the richest alluvial goldfield in the world. Historical and contemporary works from the Gallery Collection demonstrate how artists have responded to this upheaval since gold was first discovered on Wadawurrung Country over 170 years ago.

The inaugural work displayed on the new outdoor ArtScreen will be a 3-panel video work Nature is not a place to visit. It is home by renowned photographic and video artist – and self-confessed ‘bird nerd’ – Leila Jeffreys. This video of flocks of birds, created using some of the world’s most advanced slow-motion film technology, is a celebration of the wonder of nature and will be displayed alongside eight photographs from her 2019 series High Society.

The winter UNESCO display at the Ballarat Visitor Centre is showcasing artworks and handmade creations that are forged by fire. Works on display have been created using fire & heat – a fantastic contrast to our winter cold.

TARLI GLOVER: FAMILIAR GROUND

Regional areas of the Central Western Districts of Victoria have had major influences on Tarli Glover’s work, affecting the way she sees and approaches her art practice. This exhibition of paintings and drawing continues with themes taken from country Victoria, viewing the landscape as abstract shapes and forms.
