Wedding trends

Top 10 wedding trends for 2017 2017 is already proving to be an exciting year for wedding trends, with plenty of new and unique ideas we haven’t seen before. If you’re in need of some inspiration to ensure you have the Wedding of the Year, then take a read of these top trends by expert wedding planner Nadia from Amulet Weddings & Events. 6. Charity over tradition

With Kate and Will asking for charity donations instead of gifts at their wedding, we knew this trend would be popular. More couples are steering away from the gift list and asking for a charitable donation to their favourite charity. We love this selfless act and are glad it’s here for 2017. Through websites like www.presentaid. org, your gift options are endless – whether your guests buy a goat or a health worker’s training, you could transform the lives of people living in poverty around the world.

7. Icebreakers © Lindsey Arber Photography

1. Trees and foliage

The interest in trees, greenery and garlands to decorate is rife and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. In 2017 it’s the more impactful the better, with weeping willows, draping ferns & elegant birches transforming the wedding reception into a whimsical playground. We’ve listed a few of our favourite local flower companies on page 30.

4. Wedding planner vs social media

With a huge percentage of brides pinning their dream weddings online, we see an increase in the need to draft in wedding planning assistance to ensure those visions and dreams come to life. Engaged couples are busier than ever and are appreciating the time and cost-saving implications of hiring a professional to turn those pins & Instagram posts into reality.

Make awkward silences and introductions a thing of the past with interactive games for all your guests to enjoy. We’re seeing portrait artists, teamed garden games, stilt walkers and treasure hunts for the little (and big) ones! Check out Leicester-based booking agents Live Entertainment on 0800 634 6799,

8. Immersive experiences

Make your wedding stand out by adding more creative elements. We’re seeing elaborate themes and unconventional venues by couples not afraid to create a rich experience for their guests. Think large bands, modern garden parties and glamorous performances.

9. Destination weddings

2. Street food and stations

Some couples are moving away from the traditional sit-down meals by creating a festival atmosphere for all to enjoy. Why not give your guests a choice with a Mediterranean grazing table, pizza bar or a taco stand? Add a donut wall or dessert stations to keep your guests fuelled to party. Turn to page 13 for some of our favourite local caterers

3. The Geode

5. First looks and reveals

This is when the bride and groom meet in private to spend a few minutes alone and is set to be popular in 2017 for both couples and with the Father of the Bride. With other trends breaking tradition, you can truly personalise it and get that moment captured on camera too. This one is fun, romantic and calms the nerves!

We love this one and feel the more Geodes the better! This Volcanic rock trend began in Australia with the striking Geode Wedding Cake, but we see the Geode flooding Weddings in 2017. Add colourful Geode centerpieces, personalised place settings and favours or Geode jewellery to be hot on trend.

This year will see a huge increase in the popularity of destination weddings, with couples transforming their wedding into a luxury, once-in-a-lifetime holiday. Inviting their nearest and dearest and creating full itineraries for all to enjoy, the focus here is on quality time together internationally. And you’ll have no problem convincing wedding planners, photographers et al from home to get involved.

10. Exciting colours

Copper will still be huge this year, with metallic cutlery & coloured glassware really paving the way. • Nadia is owner of Amulet Weddings Vivid invitations & Events, crafting from Stamford-based beautiful weddings Spiegl Press across Rutland, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and abroad.

Wedding cakes

Let them eat cake… Serve up a slice of happiness prepared by one of the region’s best wedding cake suppliers. Words: Amander Meade

HERE are unlimited options when it comes to wedding cakes these days. Choose from cupcake towers, multi-flavoured tiered cakes, and naked style layers or personalise your own design. Vintage styles are still popular with contemporary floral and botanical styles trending strongly too. Whatever your style, you can find a local supplier to help you achieve your confectionery dreams and treat your guests to a delicious sugar rush before the dancing begins.

Specialist showstopper

Katie Watts runs Couture Cakes and did not disappoint guests at her own wedding with this exquisite multitiered creation incorporating raspberry and amaretto, hazelnut praline, vanilla and carrot sponge layers decorated with cascading edible gold nuggets and dressed with trailing fresh flowers.

Summer fresh

Wistow Catering created this gorgeous summery Victoria sponge tower decorated with fruit for guests to devour. As all their wedding cakes are made to order, they will produce cakes suitable for a gluten-free or Vegan diet.

Cupcakes continue

There’s no stopping the popularity of individual cupcakes, especially at vintage themed weddings. So versatile, so delicious.

Select a style Deal with the cake after all decisions about dress style and reception decor have been made. These elements can serve as a blueprint for the design and structure of your wedding cake. Taste the cake Set up appointments with several bakers for a tasting and to review their portfolios. This is your opportunity to meet bakers and fully understand the range of their abilities. Size it up As a guide, three tiers will serve 50 to 100 guests. Go for five tiers for 200 guests or more. Servings are especially important if you are using your cake as dessert but remember - the more elaborate the cake, the more you will pay for specialist design and labour. Find ways to save On a tight budget? Order a small cake that’s decorated to perfection plus several sheet cakes of the same flavor to actually feed the guests. Garnish your cake with seasonal flowers and fruit for an elegant (but less expensive) effect. On display Your cake is likely to be on display before it’s cut and consumed. Make sure there is a designated cake table that allows the most elegant presentation possible. (Ask your florist for help).

Chocolate rules

A beautiful tower of individually chocolate-themed cheesecakes by Couture Cakes provides each guest with something special. Doubles as a gorgeous centrepiece too.

Say cheese!

Try Otter’s Deli for a magnificent cheese tower as a savoury alternative. Pair it with charcuterie, chutney and beautiful bread for supper when guests get hungry later on.

Consider the weather

If your wedding is outdoors in mid-summer, stay away from whipped cream, meringue, and buttercream – they melt. Fondant-covered cakes like this elegant creation from Gardners Cakes stand up to warm weather much better.

Real-life wedding

A local love story Rob and Rachel Persani’s spring wedding last year was infused with magical moments, music and laughter. Rob is a well-known radio presenter and, when we spoke to the couple, Rachel was expecting their first baby. Words: Amander Meade The couple

The couple met at an event shortly after Rachel responded to an item on Rob’s radio show. Beginning as friends, romance blossomed during Christmas 2014 when the couple realised they would be together for life.

The proposal

Rob presented Rachel with a diamond ring after first obtaining her parents’ blessing. “Rob proposed under a starry sky at home here in Rutland. We always think of Rob’s late father when we look up at the stars so it was a very special moment for both of us.” The couple were keen to marry as soon as they could and chose a date in May - just four months away. “We found having less time available helped us make decisions quickly. We both love Rutland and Stamford so were determined to use as many local companies as possible.” Rachel’s grandparents and her parents were married in the parish church in Ryhall so the couple were keen to continue the tradition. Once the church was booked, things started to fall into place.

included specially recorded messages by some of her favourite celebrities as a surprise for Rachel. In the evening additional guests joined the ‘Persani Party’ featuring Funk Soul Brother and a DJ set by Rob’s friend Danny Hern. It was Rachel’s turn to surprise Rob with a matching pair of customised Converse trainers to make sure bride and groom could dance the night away in comfort. As darkness fell, an incredible firework display added something really special to proceedings.

The look

Initially daunted, Rachel was put at ease by Katie at Annie Laurie Bridal who helped find her perfect gown by Maggie Sottero – a stunning full length, vintage-style lace dress embellished with seed pearls and complemented by an elegant head piece and veil also suggested by Katie. Rachel’s grown-up bridesmaids wore coral dresses found at Debenhams while her toddler niece wore cream. The groom’s party wore charcoal grey morning suits accessorised in sage green. The couple thoroughly recommend the team at Colin Bell Menswear.

Rachel’s grandparents and her parents were married in the parish church in Ryhall so the couple were keen to continue the tradition. Once the church was booked, things started to fall into place.

The atmosphere

Rob and Rachel wanted a highly personal, relaxed day with lots of fun. Close family and friends attended their marriage service, which included some of their favourite readings and music. While the couple were driven in a Rolls Royce to Rutland Water for photographs, their guests enjoyed champagne and canapes in the sun-filled courtyard at the reception venue where harpist Eleanor Turner kept them entertained as they waited for the new Mr and Mrs Persani to arrive – announced by a special jingle that Rob had had made in true broadcasting style.

The reception

The Barn Function Room at Barnsdale Lodge proved the perfect venue for their celebrations. “The room was beautifully dressed with drapes and hundreds of twinkling fairy lights. We wanted to create a feeling of a starry sky and really personalise the space.” Following a traditional threecourse wedding breakfast, Rob’s speech

The details

In church, summer roses in soft shades of coral were arranged with gypsophila and eucalyptus by Rachel’s aunt while the co-ordinating bouquets, corsages and button holes were by Greensleaves.

“Our brilliant photographer Lizzie made sure we were comfortable at every stage of the day. The photographs were way beyond our expectations and completely captured the emotion and joy of the day. With videography by Nick Grove, we could not have asked for a better team.”

Health & Beauty

Five wedding beauty essentials Not sure where to start when it comes to creating your look for the big day? Catherine Varney asks her favourite salons for their ‘must-have’ hair and beauty treats for every bride-to-be.

1 The ultimate facial

Perfect make-up starts with a clear complexion and, if you haven’t already started a regular skincare routine, now is a good time to begin. But daily regimes aside, every bride-to-be needs a little extra help achieving flawless skin so I would recommend booking in for a course of facials in advance. At Naomi Nails and Beauty they offer excellent packages for both the Elemis Skin Brilliance Facial and the Environ Hydra Boost Facial (to rejuvenate and plump skin for a more luminous appearance) – book a course of 6 and you only pay for 5, saving up to £90.

The Ultimate Bridal Beauty Package

2 Eyelash extensions

Two of our favourite salons that offer everything under one roof:

Full, fluttery lashes can look beautifully feminine but if you’re not naturally blessed, then help is at hand. Annabel Miles from Barnsdale Spa told me “All of the semipermanent lashes we use here come in different shapes and sizes, so the lashes are specifically selected to complement the face and eye shape of the wearer, whether they want a dramatic finish or a very natural look. Infills can be applied every 3-5 weeks, should the bride fall in love and decide to keep them.” Enjoy 25% off this and other treatments here until the end of August if you mention Local Living when booking.

3 Perfect brows

Whilst the trend for big, bold brows may be great for a night out, natural bridal make-up requires a softer, less angular look and a less defined arch. Holly Elizabeth Beauty has recently joined the team at The Cutting Company in Stamford and offers a brow wax and tint that includes a ‘fill and conceal finish’ to create the perfect shape for you at just £16. Book in for a Jessica Geleration polish whilst you’re there and get a stunning French manicure that will see you through the honeymoon too.

Ivy Lodge

Choose from either The Bride’s Essential Package, which includes 8 treatments to be taken at the bride’s convenience before the wedding, or The Bride’s Ultimate Package which offers savings of up to £42 on individual prices. Treatments include: The Elemis Skin Specific Facial, LVL lashes, Swedish Massage, St Tropez spray tan, File and Jessica Gel Polish, Waxing and Eyebrow tint and shape. Ivy Lodge, Stamford Garden Centre, Casterton Road, Stamford, Tel: 01780 766583,

Maples of Stamford

Maples offer a bespoke wedding package for the whole bridal party with a full range of hair and make-up services plus pre-treatments including facials, tanning, manicures and pedicures. They also have a dedicated wedding organiser who will take the stress out of scheduling appointments. Maples, 24 St. Mary’s Street, Stamford, Tel: 01780 752725,

4 Mineral make-up

Your make-up will need to stand up to (happy) tears, hot lights and the glare from the photographer’s lens, so professional grade products and application are a must. Mineral make-up brands are particularly excellent as they contain zinc, potassium and magnesium, which are kind to skin and won’t clog pores. Two we would highly recommend are celebrity favourites, ArtDeco, available at Equilibrium in Stamford (a wedding make-up trial here starts from £25); plus the Mii range of cosmetics from Creme Hair & Beauty where Emma told me: “Its varying foundations and concealers complement every skin tone for a flawless, light and radiant finish.”

5 A hair hero

Great wedding hair needs to multi-task: look flattering and feminine, last the distance without looking messy, complement your dress and, most importantly, suit your face shape and style. No pressure then! For top-rate hair advice and pre-wedding maintenance, visit Oliver Lee in Stamford who has an excellent reputation for cutting and colouring services. For bridal hair, Thomas Potts from Thomas Hairdressing in Oakham comes highly recommended and told me: “We charge by the hour, which we feel works out as very cost effective for the bridal party and means that we can really tailor a package for each individual.” W E D D I N G I N S P I R AT I O N S 2 0 1 7

Honeymoons you’ll both love It’s a common quandary for betrothed couples…. Where to go after all the wedding madness? Fear not. We’ve come up with some winning combos to keep you both happy. After all, why have one honeymoon when you can have two... African safari and Zanzibar beach

This dual-destination trip is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to the usual South African safari + beach honeymoon. Time it right (May to September) and you might witness the oncein-a-lifetime wildebeest migration across the Serengeti. A 20-minute flight from Dar Es Saleem and you’ll be on the magical island of Zanzibar, with its diverse heritage immersed in Swahili and Islamic influences and stunning white-sand beaches with views of the Indian Ocean.

Don’t forget your swimmers!

Hawaii beach and Canadian mountain Mix it up a bit and head to Maui in Hawaii for some serious R&R following all the wedding antics. Recharge your batteries here then hit the slopes in Whistler with a spring in your step. One of you not a skier? Whistler has more than enough to keep you entertained off the slopes. This trip is particularly good during January and February, when the ski conditions are superb and it’s peak whalewatching season in Hawaii.

Inspired by our honeymoon suggestions? Pop down to Brown’s Boutique in Stoneygate for gorgeous designer swimwear, kaftans and beach dresses by the likes of Stella McCartney, Freya and Seafolly. Brown’s Lingerie and Beachwear Boutique, 35 Francis Street, Stoneygate, Leicester, LE2 2BE. 0116 2707188

Sydney and the Whitsunday Islands

Head Down Under to enjoy Sydney’s iconic harbour and watch the surf dudes in action on beautiful Bondi beach, before a quick 21/2 hour flight up to the Whitsunday Islands. Bag a window seat and you’ll see the spectacular coral reef in all its glory as you come into land on Hamilton Island. Here you can enjoy pure, untainted luxury, mesmerising scenery and incredible scuba diving and snorkelling along the Great Barrier Reef.
