Your Chance to own a Rutland Hippo The fibreglass sculptures that caused such a stir throughout the county last summer have already started waking up from their winter hibernation and the countdown is now on as they are just three months away from going under the auctioneers hammer.

Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Army Benevolent Fund and Arts for Rutland (to support local artists). Joy Everitt from Arts for Rutland says, “We have already had a really high level of interest in this event and I think people are getting genuinely excited about having the chance to own a piece of Rutland history.

We’ve decided to add a bit of fun to the event with a sealed £10 draw. The lucky winner of this will also walk away with a Hippo for just £10.”

The auction, hosted by TV star Julia Bradbury, takes place on Saturday May 21 at 7.30pm as part of a Gala Dinner with five piece band and three course meal in the Officer’s Mess at St. George’s Barracks, North Luffenham.

Wildcats Theatre School Celebrate their first term in Uppingham Award winning Wildcats Theatre School, with classes in Stamford, Peterborough and Oakham are celebrating the successful end of their first terms’ classes in Uppingham.

The classes, held every Wednesday evening at Uppingham C of E Primary School teach children the three elements of Musical Theatre; dance, drama and singing in a fun and interactive way. Mini Wildcats (age 4-7) work towards LAMDA Introductory Awards and Juniors develop their skills using the LAMDA Musical Theatre Syllabus. Wildcats have a 100% pass rate and over half the children entered for exams reach distinction grade.

Caz Dolby, Owner of Wildcats said, “It is great that the classes in Uppingham are going so well.

Children have been enjoying learning routines from Musicals such as West Side Story, Children of Eden, Mamma Mia and much more. Our new partnership with Pineapple Performing Arts School also means that during the holidays we can offer specialist master-classes taught by professional cast members from shows such as Wicked and Lion King.”

Traditional Toys For the last two years Cloggies have been trading their traditional toys and original gifts from an online store. As their business, customers and stock have grown so has the need to open a shop in the area. Cloggies, named after the traditional Dutch wooden clog, began shortly after the owners, Marco and Claire had their first son. “We wanted some wooden toys for our son, especially the traditional ones we both grew up with. New shop opens in Whissendine Rutalnd, run by father Ram Odedra and son Aakash. This is a great reversal to shops being close in villages. The shop is over 1000 sq ft and offers all you would expect from a convenience store. The residents of Whissendine have given the store tremendous support and all who have been to the shop state the shop has pumped life into the village. The children from a nearby school come to get their sweets, the mums get their necessary items and the elderly do not have to leave the village. The shop is also used by residence of nearby villages Ashwell and Langham. Vanessa Hollander has some valuable tips on how to get the most from our Region’s fabulous boutiques...

W

hether you live in Oakham, Market Harborough, or Uppingham, we are blessed with a fabulous array of boutiques - Cavells, The Stock Room, Scarlet Sky, Vanilla, Attic, Woosters, Jacks, The Glass Slipper, Banyan Tree Too, Wish … the list goes on and on!

While most of us love nothing more than occasionally losing a few hours (and ourselves!) in a mindless mooch around the High Street shops, for the most part we are unnoticed, uninspired and stressed!

The real gems, however, are to be found in our local market towns in our boutiques, where the variety, value and customer service really are second to none. Here you can find just what you’re looking for without feeling as though you’ve run a marathon.

For the last year I’ve been working in one such fabulous boutique within our region.

Yet previously I found the whole ‘boutique’ experience quite daunting. And now, of course, I know it really isn’t.So I wanted to pass on some tips for those of you who feel the same way, with the benefit of being on ‘the other side of the counter’!

WALKING INTO A BOUTIQUE To some, this is the most stressful part! I previously had to steel myself even to go inside a boutique. Then I would make ‘guilt’ purchases to absolve myself from going in, and hurry quickly out of there with things I really didn’t

want.

Yet it really is perfectly ok to go into a boutique and just have a look. In fact, it is the assistants’ responsibility to make you feel comfortable and welcome.

If you do feel uncomfortable just going in to browse, catch the eye of the nearest assistant, tell them you’re just looking and ask if that’s ok.

This makes your intention clear from the start, and it really is perfectly acceptable!

Similarly, if you’re looking for something specific then it’s worth asking the assistant straight out, saving precious time.

So, take a deep breath, hold your head high and go in. What you’ll find inside will no doubt be worth it!

UNIQUE BOUTIQUE Unlike the High Street, the boutique offers the opportunity to buy something different, unique and individual from designers and labels you may never have heard of but will love. To most, labels really don’t matter. When you love, something all that matters is that it looks good and you can afford it.

What’s more, you probably won’t suffer the embarrassment of turning up at an event in the same outfit as someone else, as once stock is gone – it’s gone!

The other great thing about a boutique is that they do have a limited choice. Though choice is obviously a good thing, too much can be overwhelming and down right confusing.

A boutique normally caters for certain ages, styles and budgets, so when you find one that matches your own style and requirements, your search is all but over!

MAKING THE BOUTIQUE WORK FOR YOU • Customer Service and Style Advice The boutique offers a more intimate shopping experience and a level of customer service that you just don’t find on the High Street.

Speaking as someone who works in fashion, we love it when customers ask for our advice.

What’s more the boutique sales assistant knows her stock, what it looks like on, what body type it suits and how the sizes come up. Never be afraid of asking for advice. We see all different body types, shapes and sizes every day nothing shocks.

What may look hideous on the hanger, could look stunning on.

• Flexibility When you become a regular customer in a boutique, certain privileges may be afforded to you. For instance, if you are in a rush and don’t have the time to try something on, then you may be able to take the item ‘on approval’. This is a benefit indeed, as many a busy woman will confirm.

Also, if you love something but can’t afford it until pay day, then a boutique may put something away for you until you can afford it.

It’s always worth asking, and it’s not an unusual request.

Going on holiday to the sun in the midst of winter and can’t find any summer clothes anywhere? It’s always worth asking in a boutique as they may keep a small supply of unseasonal items in their stock room.

In short, I write in much praise of our boutiques. Do support them, as they offer many a gem that you just won’t find on the High Street.

Rutland County Show – A Tradition worth Supporting On Sunday 5 June, Rutland Agricultural Society will hold their 179th Annual County Show at Burley –on-the-Hill near Oakham. Amander Meade speaks to Jo Morley to find out what new attractions are promised for local people, visitors and members this year

Animals, produce, displays, vehicles, entertainment – there is something for everyone. ..

Formed in around 1825 and with only a couple of years’ absence during the World Wars, the annual Rutland Show has been part of the fabric of our county ever since. The original ethos was to “further the cause of agriculture in the County of Rutland and to help support the education of young people in good agricultural practices.” According to Jo, the show’s secretary, the essence of that statement remains true today - “The organisation is very much a team effort by a committee who live and work within the rural community. In recent years it has been very sad to see much larger county shows disappear for good and we are very proud that the people of Rutland still value and support the show, turning out each year – whatever the weather!”

This year...

Back by popular demand is the Sheep Show – with a humorous, live stage show all about

sheep in true New Zealand style featuring shearing demonstrations and the amazing “Dancing Sheep”. There will also be classes for special breeds and goats as well as a host of other livestock judging. Always popular are the Horse and Pony classes and the show jumping.

Another new and exciting addition to the programme is the Royal Artillery Motorcycle Display Team known as The Flying Gunners.

Their high octane performance will leave you breathless as the seventeen man team performs feats of sheer courage and skill. With precision riding at its best, you will see some of the fastest crossovers in the world with closing speeds of 80-90mph plus a nail biting finale.

This military display team prides itself on being the best – fantastic entertainment for all the family to enjoy.

Stars of the main ring….

Stealing the show and doing what comes naturally, visitors will love the Lurcher Display, Falconry and Ferret Racing in the main ring, an action-packed demonstration with informative and entertaining commentary throughout.

The public will have a chance to take part with their own dogs regardless of breed, before the highlight of the show, a race between a lurcher and a hawk.

Always an impressive display are the Vintage and Classic Cars and Farm Machinery plus examples of the finest modern farming equipment available. Add to this over one hundred trade and specialist agricultural stands, children’s amusements and a Giant Tombola

Mayday Mayday Caroline Aston does her bit for the community

T

ra-la! Tra la! ‘Tis the season of the beribboned maypole and bursting blossoms, of cherubic children pictured dancing ye olde English country dances on village greens under the limpid gaze of flower-crowned May Queens – and all that sort of stuff.

However, I thought I would take a look at a different kind of May Day, just for a change.

Do you know who originated the Mayday distress signal? Well, here is your chance to add to your store of quiz trivia, courtesy of me. Back in 1923 one Frederick Stanley Mockford was working as senior radio officer at Croydon airport near London. He was asked to devise a word to be used to indicate distress and be easily understandable by all ground crew and pilots in emergency. Since the bulk of air traffic then was between Croydon and Le Bourget, Paris Mockford took the French phrase ‘Venez m’aider’ (come and help me) and produced the now internationally recognised ‘Mayday’ signal...and the rest, as they say, is history. But it got me thinking about just how many groups and organisations our county has that give help to so many people in so very many ways.

Way back in 1984 the Rutland Volunteer Bureau was founded with a £300 grant from Leicestershire Health and Leicestershire County Council.

Its first chair was Derek Smith and the organisation was run from the Red Cross Office in Gaol Street, Oakham. Talk about great oaks growing from little acorns! Gradually the RVB became involved in virtually every aspect of Rutland life and the needs of our community, changing its name to Volunteer Action Rutland in 1993, and ultimately moving to its current HQ off Lands End Way in 1999, when the Princess Royal formally opened the Creative, practical solutions to suit individual homes and gardens.

Over the years literally thousands of Rutlanders have benefited from the volunteer transport service. The Volunteer Centre is the permanent home of, among others, the Rutland Community Mental Health Team, CLASP, the carers’ centre and Age Concern. It provides a meeting place for diverse groups such as Symbiotica (a social group for people with disabilities), the Rutland Stroke Club, the Parkinson’s Disease Society, VISTA for the visually impaired and the cancer support group. Relate (the former Marriage Guidance organisation) uses its premises as does the Leicester Counselling Centre.

On a lighter note, our own much loved dramatic society, the RATS, are welcome guests there and local cross stitchers enjoy a cup of tea while completing their latest works of art.

The Stable Garden, created by users of the mental health services, provides a haven for people with disabilities and wherever there is a group or individual or project in Rutland that needs support or practical assistance RVA will be on hand. And what happened to Fred Mockford? He died in 1962 and is buried at Selmeston, East Sussex where his gravestone proudly proclaims him as the inventor of the Mayday signal that has saved literally thousands of lives since 1923. So there, readers, a little known fact and a lot of local knowledge and maybe inspiration to go out there and do your bit.

W

hen I first moved to Stamford I was struck by the unusually high number of independent retailers, most of them located in the area around St Mary’s Street, recently dubbed St Mary’s Quarter. Snaking from Red Lion Square down to the river towards The George Hotel, the street and the lanes branching off it are crammed with fascinating shops. These occupy an attractive jumble of historic buildings, so it’s a pleasant stroll even if you’re only window shopping. Look up and you’ll spy wonky slate-tiled roofs, timbered facades and even a Statue of Justice keeping a stern eye on passing trade.

However you approach St Mary’s Quarter, whether from north, south, east or west, a shop window is sure to catch your eye. Vying for the contents of your wallet are china and cookware, cheese, wine and chocolates, flowers, furniture, art, rare books and antiques. There are shops selling shoes, bags and clothing for all ages, from six months to sixty years. You’ll find shoes for everyone in Marcia May, children’s outfits in Joules and Greencircle, menswear in Ibson and, amazingly, almost a dozen boutiques for women. The ever-popular Attic along with Black Orchid, Sly, Arch Label Agency and newcomers I Should Coco and Baubles and Bangles are just a handful. You can even buy a new kitchen, a musical instrument or perhaps a handmade timepiece from watchmaker Robert Loomes.

lare and Mark Latham have been running the Noel at Whitwell for four years and during that time have performed a transformation on the interior, the menu and are in the process of working their same magic on the gardens. “It has been a labour of love”, agrees Clare. “We are more than happy with the results and the gardens will come into their own this summer completing the package.”

ervice” is the cry we waitresses jump to ...tis’ the cry of The Chef, which, if not suitably responded to, will very quickly become a holler; if then we still do not materialise than he may appear, woe betide us all, in the restaurant waving a meat clever in a menacing fashion! Fact or Fiction?

There is much banter that surrounds the vagaries and habits of chefs, but what about the erstwhile waiters; the interface between you, the customer, and the blaspheming “Chef Almighty” in the kitchen? We run hither and thither to the beck and call of all, yet seamlessly, almost swan like, if we are really good at what we do; our mind flits from table to table, order to order, continuously re-assessing the priories; “Who arrived first?” “Who is most relaxed?

Thanks to Michele Roux junior the whole issue of good service in restaurants has been highlighted. In one of the episodes a celebrity diner is quoted, “The dining experience is 70% about atmosphere and service, 30 % is about the food”.

Service is a subject close to my heart, the very thing that I have built my career and reputation upon, but good service is not so easy to achieve. Often being attentive can be misconstrued as a pushy sales’ technique, yet standing back, allowing space for the diners, can be interpreted as neglectful.

Efficient service is an art; a true skill when played out perfectly the results are fantastic. It is a combination of dexterity and agility, knowledge of the menu, food and wine, but also it is about empathy, responding to the needs of your guests and providing them with what they want.

It is often said that working in a restaurant in a rite of passage, I completely agree. Front of house there is nowhere to hide, we are on show and we aim to please. As an aside, I should add that Lino is not a bit like the manic chef described in the opening paragraph!

Delicious Fresh Milk

Sarah Lyon discovers a local resurgence for untreated, unadulterated fresh milk

“Y

ou need to try it, or else you’ll never know how good it is,” says Rob Price. Rob is the man behind the Lincolnshire Poacher stall on Stamford Farmer’s Market.

Milk is a priority for Tim and Simon Jones who produce Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese.

Cheese is made using the unpasteurised milk from their herd of Holstein cows on their farm in Ulceby Grange, Lincolnshire. “We started selling our milk on the Farmer’s Markets two years ago,” says Tim. “The reason behind this was because Simon and I had grown up with drinking it on the farm.” Tim adds, “It is so very different to supermarket milk. For one it isn’t homogenised or pasteurised. We produce a natural product that isn’t heat treated. The method of production is more labour intensive but we love to do it. Our milk is totally fresh, so fresh that the lactose in the milk has not yet had a chance to break down, which means that the milk still has a lovely sweet taste. Unhomogenised milk is easier to digest, so there are health benefits. Health studies show that there are lower incidents of asthma and other allergy related intolerances in children who drink raw milk. My children certainly have it,” says Tim. “We have a licence from the Government who strictly regulate,” says Tim. “For us though, the milk is not a commercial operation. We do it for the customer. They care about the integrity of what they are eating and the way in which it is produced. That is why our cheese, butter and milk have such a great appeal.”

“I love the Lincolnshire Poacher stall,” says Carol Meads. “I like the process of the market and talking to Rob who always offers and encourages me to taste some samples. I drank raw milk as a child on my uncle’s farm and have watched as milk has become more and more processed. I am always looking out for foods that are less processed and produced in a positive way and I am thoroughly confident in the provenance of where and how the milk on the Poacher stand is produced. “What about the flavour,” I ask. “The milk is creamy and I like that. I notice that the taste varies throughout the year. It is not always the same which is really interesting. It is absolutely marvellous,” says Carol.

The question many ask is, ‘Is it safe?’ “Providing that the farmer can demonstrate that the milk is produced in a clean and environmental way where milking practices are very clean, then, yes it is safe,” says Farmer Phil Newcombe of Lubcloud Dairy Organic Milk. “I believe it is the process of homogenisation that alters and destroys the structure of the milk and causes harmful health related issues for many who have become lactose intolerant. In a raw state enzymes and good bacteria remain which is good for the Sophie stomach.”

Driver Phil adds, “We sell our pasteurised organic milk at many farm shops around the region. I looked into going raw years ago but had shelved the plans until now. There is a growing market for raw milk and we have had several enquiries which is the reason for moving in this new direction. Throwing spears Asparagus is here! So is a new season, which demands fresh flavours in the kitchen. By Sean Hope

I

t’s that time of year again. After a hard winter of sprouts, parsnips and squashes, the arrival of delicate, tender asparagus – rising from the soil as the sun regains its heat – gives us all a much-needed shot of something new. Those spears – the first of the season are called sprue – seem to come just when you need them most.

And one of the reasons we love asparagus so much is because we’ve been desperate for the arrival of spring since January 2!

In terms of vegetables, there’s not a lot better than asparagus grown just a few miles away (or in your garden), picked literally hours before you cook it – you can grill, blanch, lightly fry, whatever you feel like.

I think it’s important to get the message across that the taste of just-cut local asparagus is infinitely superior to week-old spears flown in from Peru. So I urge you all to get out to farmers’ markets, roadside sellers and farm shops to support our local producers.

Asparagus goes with almost anything, but I think salty dairy ingredients match its flavour perfectly. If you find some thin sprue asparagus, give it a try – I reckon it has a more piquant flavour than the larger variety. You’ve also got white asparagus, which is grown from the same seed as the green variety but is left covered by the soil to inhibit the colour. In my experience, white spears tend to lack flavour compared to green, with the latter having a nuttier taste. White asparagus seems to be preferred in Europe.

Aspa ragus, poa ched egg, crispy ba con, Hollan da ise sa uce an d Parme sa n shavings Less is more with this sim ple dish. You don’t want to overcook the asparagus or the egg – you’re aiming for spears with a touch of crispness and a runny yolk.

• Handful asparagus spe ars • 1 egg • Bacon, cooked until cris p • Parmesan • Hollandaise sauce • 1 Bring a large pan of sal ted water to the boil. Snap the bottom off each asparagus spear – they will natura lly snap in the right place. Add the asparagus to the water and cook for five minutes, unt il just tender. Drain, wrap in a cloth and leave on one side.

• 2 Grill your bacon unt il crispy. Set aside.

• 3 To poach your egg, bri ng another pan of water with a splash of vin egar to the boil.

Cook the egg for 2-3 min utes until the white is set. Remove with a slo tted spoon.

• 4 Combine asparagus , egg and bacon and top with Parmesan sha vings. Serve with Hollandaise sauce. Easy and tasty!

• With almonds • With anise and tarragon • With Parmesan • With lemon • With mint • With mackerel • With shellfish • With cured ham • With mushrooms – a wonderful aphrodisiac, apparently!

They’re relatively inexpensive and hugely versatile, being fantastic for steaming vegetables lightly and healthily. You can also steam fish in them. Sosennah Every heads to Great Glen to see some of Leicestershire’s finest under 15s train with Olympic swimming champions

I

t’s 8.30am in the school holidays and yet 30 children aged 9-15 are circling their arms, doing hip rotations and warming up, all with great excitement in their faces at the thought of the day ahead, spent under the guidance of Olympic breaststroke champion Laurent Carnol. This is day two of a week long swim camp organised by head coach Nigel Kube for the Leicester Penguins Swimming Club, with the aim of helping the swimmers improve their technique, get a better understanding of nutrition and also the sports psychology of swimming.

Other itinerary highlights in the week include a starts and turns technique session with local swim hero Jamie Thorpe (50m British Senior Butterfly champion) and top ASA coach Nigel Aldridge and Irish Olympian Melanie Nocher, teaching backstroke techniques.

History The Leicester Penguins Swimming Club celebrated its 60th Anniversary last year and for an amateur club this is a great achievement. The club has 180 swimmers and survives because of the dedication of the volunteer coaches and parents who help to run it, doing anything from timing at the side of the pool to ferrying the children around to matches every Saturday.

The club’s objective is, “Not to create a champion but to create an environment where champions are inevitable”. The club strives to uphold all the best ideals of sportsmanship and, as Nigel explained, “Although swimming is very much an individual sport, the squad has a huge team spirit. All the children support one another in their competitive races, and medals are won for the squad as a whole, not just for themselves.”

“They love it; they live and breathe swimming”, says a mother of two of the boys aged nine and eleven. She first took them swimming because she couldn’t swim herself and wanted to make sure they could. They loved it and seemed to have a natural ability for it as they sailed through their swimming badges at school and it was their teachers and coaches who suggested joining a competitive club like Penguins. Both boys train six days a week and have competitions most weekends so it is a huge commitment for the whole family. But their love for the sport makes it all worthwhile, not to mention the chance to emulate Laurent’s Olympic greatness, maybe not at 2012 for these children but in Olympics to come.

Another mum was a swimming champion herself and wanted her daughter to have the same opportunities of travel and meeting new

people. She now helps coach the squad and is proud of the Penguins reaching the national senior and junior finals in 2009, qualifying seventh and fourth respectively.

Laurent, now ranked 5th in the world, started swimming aged five and loves the team spirit in swimming. He is very excited about London 2012 and, although he is from Luxembourg, feels like it will be his home Olympics after living and training in Loughborough for two years. He said of the Penguins, “Their attitude is great; they really enjoy swimming and Nigel is a wonderful coach, very knowledgeable and motivating.”

Next Steps Nigel says, “If your child shows potential and a love for swimming the next step is to contact the club. We then do some time trials at the pool in the newly built Leicester Grammar School and from there decide if there is a budding swimmer in the making. We need boys!”

Rutland Water Venue for Groundbreaking Performance this Summer

A

rts for Rutland are staging of a unique weekend festival and world premiere performance to be held on the shores of Rutland Water on the 25 and 26 June. The Four Winds Festival will present a specially commissioned piece, ‘The Way the Winds Blow’ based on the history of the area and the Gwash Valley. The site, which was flooded in 1976 to create Rutland Water, is now one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe and one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in Great Britain.

The event will include a choir of more than 300 singers accompanied by a brass band, a concert orchestra and an African percussion band. Four professional singers and a narrator will lead this ambitious piece of storytelling directed by award winning Chris Baldwin with music commissioned from BAFTA nominated Nick Bicat.

The Four Winds Festival is being designed to make the most of its spectacular shoreline setting close to the Normanton Church Museum: Each day a series of cultural and participatory activities related to the theme of four winds and designed for the whole family, will be on offer.

Commenting on the project, Peter Lawson from Arts for Rutland says, “One of the key objectives for Arts for Rutland is to lead and promote the development and performance of film, theatre, music, comedy, dance, visual art, craft and creative writing in Rutland. ‘The Four Winds Festival’ will be our highest profile event in 2011 and The Way the Winds Blow is our largest single project to date.”

Hand Stitched Theatre Company Presents ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Amander Meade

H

and Stitched is a Rutland based Theatre Company for young people, born when a group of ‘A’ level students required an outlet for their talent on leaving college pre university/drama school, and is currently a blend of this year’s ‘A’ level Drama candidates and other local actors.

This company recently performed their version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in the library space at the Rutland Sixth form college where the audience were aged from six to eighty years old. The text had been expertly reduced to accommodate a performance of just over an hour which kept even the youngest in the audience fidget free.

Of course I expected these young actors to be competent, but competent doesn’t begin to do them justice. As a company, they were seamless and compelling benefitting in no small way from the experience of Richard Hodgson, who also co-directed, and Nick Mulvey who completed their studies in Rutland two years ago.

The piece was supported musically by the astounding Rachel Branston who composed an original score especially for the play performed by her choir, the Clarion Young Singers – hauntingly beautiful. Another highlight was the appearance of the dancers from the Edge Dance Company who manifested as young Veronians and guests at the masked ball. Sarah Jaggard runs Edge and choreographed the piece which gave the ball sequence the required surreal quality. The ‘none of this would have been possible’ award must go to Ben Stimpson – a technical genius who facilitated wonders with switches and wires and who has gained a prestigious place to study at the Royal Welsh.

The company were all so talented it seems rather unfair to pick out individuals but I must mention Alex Mulvey as Juliet who was so convincingly coquettish with a stubborn, selfish streak; a blend that only teenage girls possess; Ben Hinton is also one to watch – a completely unselfconscious actor whose already impressive range took us on his short journey from carefree lad to heartbreak and ultimate tragic death. Mark Brown as Tybalt was understated, brooding and full of dark malice and Sinead McGuire, who played the nurse, did not so much steal all the scenes she was in but simply popped them in her pocket and sauntered off with them!

What a talent. What a group. What a treat. If you get the chance to see this performance again, I urge you to do so. I was riveted from start to finish. DIRECTIONS Park in Southey Woods car park, cross the road and process for a hundred yards or so down a metalled track before turning left along a field edge towards the wood (this path is not on the OS map, but is a bridleway).

When you reach the wood, turn right through a wooden gate into the reserve and then through another wooden gate after 200 yards or so, bearing to the left along the field edge after this second gate Go through a gate and proceed straight ahead (a bridleway heads north) and continue following the edge of the field/heath, swinging round to the right When you reach the end of the wood, turn left along a track past a pond, then another pond (a great dragonfly spot) and exit the reserve through two gates, the first wooden, the second metal Immediately after this 2nd gate, head right (S) for a 100 yards or so, then take a grassy track to your right (W) for a few hundred yards Where there is a yellow arrow on a stake bear left along a windy little path, through a metal mesh gate into a more organised wood, out the other side through another similar gate, then turn left and re-join the main track heading south Cross a metalled track and proceed to the end of the wood, come out into a field, turn right and shortly re-join the bridleway back into the reserve. Follow this for half a mile or so, across the metalled track again, until you reach Middle Heath.

Bear diagonally left across the heath, following the northern boundary W until you reach a gate and then head north (note 100 yds S as you reach this gate, the derelict tower, one of a pair used to gauge accuracy of trial bombing runs in WWII) Proceed N, with the Old Roman road immediately to your left, back to your starting point.

Castor Hanglands Castor Hanglands is managed as a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest by English nature. It is very actively managed, with much coppicing and land management to help nature.

In an area of less than 220 acres (90 ha), it contains a remarkable variety of plant and animal life. The reserve is a composite site where four distinct habitats — woodland, grassland, scrub and wetland — each of which has its own special wildlife, are made more valuable by their close proximity.

Its history goes back over 2,000 years; the western boundary following King Street, a Roman road connecting Castor and Bourne.

The woodland in Castor is mentioned in the Domesday Book and the name ‘hangra’ is Old English for a wood on a hill. The woods later became part of the mediaeval hunting forest of Nassaburgh. The woods were also a favourite spot for John Clare, the local nature poet, to roam.

This month in our ‘Living the Good Life’ spot, local home designer, Alison Hutchinson catches up with wicked stepmother Victoria Merrick

‘Learning the good life’ workshops

V

ictoria originally came to the UK from Sydney, Australia, in her 20s and when she returned at 40 to find London a very different place.

With a background in restaurants she was originally asked to set up an espresso school to train the catering and restaurant industry how to use espresso machines and become baristas. This was before the rise in coffee shops in the UK and she was at the beginning of the coffee revolution. At 42 she found her now husband and inherited 4 children when she married him (hence the wicked stepmother title – although anything could be further from the truth). She moved to Lincolnshire and as she puts it ‘surrendered everything that identified me’. Being the sort of person who throws herself into everything wholeheartedly she embraced family life and decided that she would devote the next 10 years to raising a family.

It’s a familiar story, but once the children were old enough for Victoria to start thinking of something else she knew that it couldn’t be running another restaurant. Her learning the good life workshops, which started with 6 in the Spring and 6 in Autumn and now run to 70 a year, came about quite by chance.

“The business of learning the good life at Wicked Stepmother’s World evolved organically,” says Victoria. “I was interested in gardening but not very knowledgeable so I thought I’d get someone really good to come and teach me and they could teach others at the same time. That was our first course,” she said.

Victoria is passionate about what she does and all the courses are to do with things that she’s interested in which is why so many of the latest courses have moved towards more sustainable living – keeping hens, bread making, 2 June, make do and mend, 8 June, the healing garden 11 June as well as keeping bees, making rustic chairs and willow weaving. Being so busy organising the behind the scenes catering (using seasonal vegetables) and pulling the courses together means she never gets to sit in on a whole course but she does rave about the bread making day she did with Linda Hewitt and now makes all her own break and joked “I really should be able to wrap a parcel by now, I’ve seen Jane Means do it so many times.”

With so many courses running throughout the year you might think Victoria was too busy to think of what comes next but she already has it mapped out. She’d like to be able to offer students accommodation as well as the great hospitality they get during her courses.“I’d like to renovate one of the farm buildings into a carbon neutral building and run courses from here. We have a vineyard on the farm so it would be good to run wine making and appreciation classes too,” she explained.

Making a splash

John Todd loved boating so much he sold his farm to carve a new career on the local waterways. Words & Photographs: Dave Phillips

e all love messing about on the water. But few of us love it so much that we would be prepared to sell up everything and start a new life living – and making a living – on the local canal network.

But that’s what farmer John Todd did. After spending a couple of idyllic summer holidays afloat on the Grand Union Canal, he decided to sell off his smallholding at Weldon, near Corby, and begin a new life on the waterways. “I loved boating, but it cost £1000 to hire a narrowboat for a week and I worked out that I could make a living working on the canals and my boat would pay for itself,” says John, 32.

He took the plunge two years ago, buying a 68-foot steel hull, upon which he built his boat, which combines cosy living quarters with a much larger cargo area, capable of carrying several tons of cargo. To cut costs, he built most of the decks and interior from reclaimed wood – mainly old pallets. A traditional cast-iron stove heats the interior and provides hot water.

The boat is powered by a 50-year-old diesel engine that versatile John restored himself.

“The engine started life as one of a pair used to power a fishing trawler,” says John. “It’s a four-cylinder Ford 4D, built in the late 1950s and early 60s, which was also used on Fordson tractors and Thames Trader lorries at that time.

It’s only about 50 horsepower, but it’s ideal for pulling a big, heavy boat at low speeds.”

John’s work takes him throughout the local canal system, as well as the navigable River Nene, which connects with the Grand Union Canal at Northampton. But he spends much of his time at Foxton Locks near Market Harborough, a traditional gathering point for the small community of men and women who make their living on the waterways. During the severe weather last winter he and his pals were

immobile for six weeks because the canal was frozen solid, with ice a foot thick!

For John, making a living on the river usually involves delivering large loads of timber, towing heavy barges for British Waterways as they carry out bank repairs. He also delivers logs and firewood to boaters and waterside homes.

In his past life, as a farmer, John had to be resourceful and learned a full complement of skills including carpentry, welding, mechanics and building work – all of which he’s happy to put to good use as an all-round odd job man.

But, most importantly, John’s found an inner peace living and working on the river.

He’s also found love. He met his girlfriend, Rosemary Robinson, last year. She joined him on his boat for a few weeks and fell in love with both the boatman and his way of life – so much so that she has now bought a 58-foot narrowboat of her own. “We’ll be a two-boat family,” laughs Rosemary, who admits that her boat will provide more spacious living accommodation, including a better-equipped galley (boat-speak for kitchen) and an allimportant bathroom and shower. It will also provide her with a livelihood, too. Farmer’s daughter Rosemary is a trained horticulturist who plans to turn the roof of her boat into a floating garden centre, from which she’ll sell herbs and vegetables to fellow boaters, as well as container plants to tourists.

For John and Rosemary, it’s an idyllic lifestyle, waking up in the morning to the sound of water lapping against the bedroom window and a family of swans waiting to share their breakfast. But they’re both aware that it also involves hard work.

Back in their heyday, in the 19th century, Britain’s inland waterways were the motorways of their time. They suffered a decline through

the advent of first the railways and later road transport, but using the waterways is the most environmentally-friendly way of transporting freight and today they are enjoying a revival.

“Our ambition is to explore all of the country’s inland waterways, but the reality is that we will

travel to wherever we get the work,” says John.

“When you travel by boat you get to see places in a different way to how you’d see them on land.”

“Wherever we go we’ll have a wonderful time,” adds Rosemary.

Oakham Festival runs from 17th June to 3rd July and has events throughout these two weeks with a finale weekend in the Funky Tent at the Castle Oakham Festival is part of Rutland Festival fortnight which includes many fantastic events.

The Four Winds Festival at Normanton, Rutland Water on 25th and 26th June will be a spectacular event culminating in two performances of The Way the Winds Blow, written and performed especially for the Four Winds festival.
