ne the most highly recommended destinations for Summer 2014 and a firm favourite with Oundle Travel, offering superb boutique hotel and villa accommodation is the resort of Kas. Kas is a beautiful harbour town set in the heart of the old Lycian region. Framed by The Taurus Mountains, it enjoys a cosmopolitan atmosphere, with superb restaurants, colourful shops and winding cobbled streets. The village has been carefully preserved and looks set to retain its special charm and ambience for many years to come. The roof terraces are a highlight of the evenings, a time when Kas is at its best, where you can dine and enjoy the magical views across the tiled rooftops to the harbour and out to the ocean. Kas has managed to retain that most elusive of mixtures - an authentic ambience with relative sophistication that makes it an unusual, picturesque and uniquely welcoming destination. Steeped in culture, the region affords many opportunities for exploration of numerous cultural sites. Sporting enthusiasts are well catered for as Kas is a centre for outdoor sports and provides a range of activities from scuba diving to canyoning, sea kayaking and trekking. The Deniz Feneri Lighthouse is a superb choice for an early summer week in guaranteed sunshine - this is the region’s premier hotel and offers a relaxing week in stunning surroundings within easy reach of Kas. A complimentary Gulet sailing day is also available with all holidays booked through Oundle Travel for Summer 2014-spend a long lazy day on board as the gulet slowly explores the local bays; lunch and afternoon tea is also included. Flights are included from Stansted to Dalaman from the Private Jet Terminal at Stansted on a privately chartered aircraft, guaranteeing a stress-free start to your holiday. elcome to the new look Rutland and Market Harborough Living magazines. With our increased distribution and amplified presence in Market Harborough and its surrounding villages, our designers have surpassed themselves with a fabulous new and fresh design for the April edition. (Thanks to those of you helping us to mark this relaunch at Louisa’s Place, Market Harborough – a chic new wine bar and bistro in the Old Post Office building and to Hambleton Bakery for supplying their award winning taste sensations – also now serving Market Harborough customers from 12 Church Street, www.hambletonbakery.co.uk – see page 12). We also have a special four-page spring fashion feature celebrating the anticipated sunshine with an array of brighter colours for the season – no I am not tempting fate just positive that the UK will deliver this summer! Although, I have to confess we are adding a glass room to the back of the house, just in case, as I am determined to have some outside parties this year – Look out next month for summer garden party ideas and catering suggestions. Here’s to a feel good spring.

DESI G N I NT E R I O R S

French Styling Nicola Hardy is inspired by the ‘French look’ after visiting family friends in Bordeaux recently

J

uliet Anderson Larmanou and her family live in an elegantly restored 300-year-old farmhouse that was a neglected and tired wreck when they first laid eyes on it. Having married a Frenchman and lived in Bordeaux for ten years Juliet’s design concepts embrace both her English roots and the French attention to detail. I met Juliet on our first day of an Art foundation course at Canterbury University. We were both feeling pretty nervous, eyeing up the strange gaggle of art students in their bizarre attire, feeling out of place and very normal in comparison. We did our level best to fit in - creating our own strange outfits in eyewatering colour combinations whilst getting stuck into all kinds of exciting arty activities. I continued down the fashion route and Jules became a surface and textile designer, supplying Harrods and Liberty’s with hand painted silk scarves and creating fabrics for London and Paris based couture houses. She is now a Mum of three and a prolific painter and potter; her highly original pots are displayed all over the house and her vivid paintings brighten every room. Jules is a keen visitor of galleries,

6

not only to find venues for her own exhibitions but also to support and collect other artists. She and I share the ideal that things of beauty should be displayed all around the house, on every shelf and surface. Minimalism is not something we practice! I have witnessed the house transform over the years. It has since grown into a large and very beautiful home with rustic window shutters, interior rough stone walls, painted furniture, distressed doors with Antique Artisan handles and vintage style light fittings. There are richly hued Persian rugs in every room making it warm, inviting and homely. She has a very well appointed studio in the eves of the

house, with separate areas for painting, printing and sewing. Although Juliet and Claude’s style is eclectic and unique, there is something undeniably French about how the house as a whole has come together. High ceilings, original

It’s hard not to be inspired by her large family friendly kitchen with its vintage hand painted freestanding furniture and cute collection of copper kettles and ceramic teapots. Every bedroom is equipped with elegant wrought beds, sumptuous rugs, chandeliers and great artwork. I was completely inspired and came home to discover that we have a number of local retailers and artists from which to purchase items to create an authentic French look!

Victorian kitchen and hall tiles, white window shutters, the wide, smooth aged floor boards, chunky ceiling beams, chandeliers and decorative pottery all combine to create both elegant and rustic French style.

HARBOROUGH HAPPENINGS Michelle Hansel takes a look at the latest news in Market Harborough this Easter

Hambleton Bakery Hambleton Bakery, the award winning Artisan Bakery, is nearing the end of a building project aimed at doubling production capacity. It all started in September, 2008 when Julian Carter and Tim Hart opened Hambleton Bakery to produce top quality traditionally made bread for Hambleton Hall and Harts, Nottingham. In addition to a growing list of wholesale customers (pubs, restaurants and delis etc) the bakery has retail outlets in Exton, Stamford and Oakham. Now, new shops are coming to West Bridgford, Nottingham in April and to Church Street, Market Harborough on Friday 14th March. The shops will stock the full range of Artisan Breads, such as Hambleton Sourdough, Date and Walnut Bread, Spelt Bread, Fruit Loaf and the Hambleton Local. There will also be a range of tarts and cakes such as Treacle Tart, Eccles Cakes, Lemon Tart and Fruit Tart, to name but a mouthwatering few! • Contact: Hambleton Bakery, 12 Church Street, Market Harborough, LE16 7AA, www.hambletonbakery.co.uk

Croft Wingates Gallery Following on from Jack Vettriano’s highly successful retrospective exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow, Croft Wingates of Market Harborough are delighted to bring this highly collectable, signed limited edition giclee print to the gallery. Previously released as a silkscreen edition the print was a much loved and collected piece which Jack decided he would re-release as a giclee print in two different size formats as part of a fundraising initiative in support of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. Maggie lived with advanced cancer for two years and during that time she used her knowledge and experience to create a blueprint for a new type of care. The centres are built around her belief that people should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”. ‘In Thoughts Of You’ by Jack Vettriano is available to buy at Croft Wingates in two sizes 22” x 24” and 32” x 37” (framed sizes). Croft Wingates fine art & framing is open 9.30am-5.30pm Monday to Saturday. The largest gallery in the County stocking originals, signed limited editions and sculpture from a broad spectrum of artists from traditional to contemporary. The coffee is always on and a warm welcome awaits you – call in and take a look! • For more information contact John at Croft Wingates Gallery, “Wingates Walk” 44a St Mary’s Road Market Harborough, Tel: 01858 465455 or visit the website www.croftwingates.co.uk or email john@croftwingates.co.uk

Gildings Auctioneers An exciting new Auction of Decorative Arts from 1860 is to be held at the Market Harborough salerooms on Tuesday 29th April. This auction focuses on the artistic movements of the Gothic Revival, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. The sale will also feature items of post-war design from Scandinavian and Italian designers, as well as 20th century artwork. The strong local association with the Arts and Crafts movement is shown in an ash and rush armchair, designed by Leicester’s most renowned figure in the movement, Ernest Gimson. An early example such as this comes with an auction estimate of £300-£500. The sale also features a strong offering of British Art Pottery from throughout the early 20th century, with examples from world famous potteries such as William Moorcroft, Clarice Cliff, Royal Doulton and a good collection of Charlotte Rhead designed pottery. Many artists of the Art Deco movement applied their eye to sculpture cast either in bronze or spelter. Spelter sculptures provide the opportunity to acquire eye-catching decorative items that are more affordable in comparison to their bronze counterparts. This stylised group of young antelope is a typical example and affordable at only £100£150. The Auction previews on Tuesday 29th April at 10am, with public viewings on Friday 27th April, 9am-4pm, Saturday 28th April, 9am – 1pm and Monday 28th April, 9am – 4pm. • For more information about this auction contact: Will Gilding, 20th Century Decorative Arts, Gildings Auctioneers Ltd, The Mill, Great Bowden Rd, Market Harborough, Tel: 01858 410414, www.gildings.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2014

few years ago, a battered publication came into my possession – an original copy of The Win-TheWar Cookery Book, printed in 1917. With 2014 marking the centenary of WW1, I’m looking at its dog-eared pages with renewed fascination. The BBC has also shown interest, filming the book for Jeremy Paxman’s recent TV series, Britain’s Great War. Published for the First World War’s Food Economy Campaign, the 28-page Win-The-War Cookery Book contains messages and recipes designed to encourage people at home to save bread and ration food to bolster the war effort. The booklet starts with a message: “The struggle is not only on land and sea; it is in your larder, your kitchen and your dining room,”

it says, before urging readers to waste nothing – “not a scrap… every particle of nourishment should be extracted from every particle of food.” Seeing as today, 100 years later, we throw away around 15 million tonnes of food annually in the UK, I can’t help thinking that this remains good advice today. Recipes in The Win-The-War Cookery Book include “Fried Mush”, “Cheese Herrings” and “Barley Broth”. At Great Food Club HQ, to try to get an insight into what cooking was like in Britain in 1917, food blogger Beth Wilmshurst (read her blog at bearsdigest.tumblr. com) tried a couple of the recipes. Here’s how she got on. Maybe you’d like to try a few at home?

I

wasn’t initially enticed by the name of this dish. Fish-lover I am, but surely a fish and a sausage should never cross paths? Then I thought a little more and decided that if a fish finger and a fish cake were to marry, this would be the result. Of course, one must remember to be forgiving of dubious titles and unusual ingredients – rationing leaves little space for conventional cooking. So I donned my

here is no doubt that women on the Home Front had this cooking lark nailed. The speculative nature of the processes outlined in each recipe’s method suggests these ladies had a great deal of natural intuition. Most instructions lack not only exact timings but also contain units of measurement that can only be described as rather vague. Hmm…wish me luck. Having experimented with a hot savoury dish and tried my hand at baking bread, I decided to go for a sweet treat this time. Research revealed that Parkin is traditionally made and devoured on Bonfire Night in the north of England. There are actually a few versions of this treacley snack – some are more cake-like, while

imaginary Edwardian apron and got to work. The first ingredient on the list: two teacupfuls of cooked fish. I spent more than a few minutes deliberating what constitutes a teacup, and concerned myself deeply with how much fish I should squish into said cup. Eventually, concluding that guesswork was a happier approach, I overcame this hurdle and the rest followed. The outcome was definitely edible,

the original Yorkshire Parkin is nearer the biscuit end of the spectrum. My attempt seemed to be closer to the latter variety (well, as near as I could get it). But like the teacup mystery of the Fish Sausages, I first had to take time to contemplate the sizing of a breakfastcup. I don’t think I ever really sussed this out, but nonetheless, in went a portion of coarse oatmeal. A teaspoon of ginger followed (I can do teaspoons), then a touch of salt. I added the margarine as instructed, and the treacle in its tablespoonfuls, but my heart sank when I saw the recipe’s closing words: “A little milk”. I decided to pour the milk in for the amount of time it takes to say “a little milk”, and this may have been unwise. The mix became sloppy when it was supposed to have the consistency of a “firm paste”. The only solution was to contribute more oats, and this seemed to do the trick. Formed into biscuit shapes and popped into the oven, I had no idea what temperature to

and quite tasty. I was pleased with the golden exterior, and positively beaming at the wellseasoned haddock interior. The sausage shape was not so easy to achieve. Sporting a potato croquette look, mine were stumpy. I’m sure a dollop of ketchup should help disguise that, unless I’ve exceeded my rations…

select or how long to bake them for. Guessing, I settled for Gas Mark 2 (150ºC) until golden brown (about 45 minutes). The outcome was a thick, gingery, crumbly biscuit, which actually tasted quite good. The added oats killed the sweetness a little… but I guess that makes for a more guilt-free treat. Now I just need a flask of tea, gloves, a woolly hat and a bracing walk among fallen leaves, and I’m all set. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2014

Barnsdale... Live it... love it... own it... Nicholas Rudd-Jones went to check out the latest developments in Barnsdale Hall’s timeshare scheme

I

have always loved Barnsdale Hall for its stunning location and grand panoramas across Rutland Water. Just arriving on site takes your breath away, as the driveway gives way to a rolling lawn going down to the water, with spectacular views as far as the eye can see. Substantial additional investment has been put into the landscaping over the last couple of years, which has really created the ‘wow’ factor and meant that several film crews have based themselves there whilst shooting documentaries about the surrounding areas. I met with Russell Waters, General Manager, to learn more about recent developments in the timeshares. “We have 49 units,” Russell told me, “and occupancy is higher than ever, at well over 90%, which we are really pleased with. “We have continued a programme of unit-byunit investment to keep the whole site in tip-top condition. “The biggest development since you last visited has been the growth of the rental side of the business. This allows visitors to stay in a great location for a week or two, and link up with friends and family in other units – one extended family recently celebrated a 50th here at a fraction of what it would cost to rent a hotel.” Another unique feature is the Monday morning Welcome, at 10am every week, where you get to meet the other residents and learn about what is going on in the local region – a representative from Discover Rutland, Barnsdale Gardens and the Falconry comes to talk. This will really help you to get full value for your time in the region. For owners, the renting option gives them still greater flexibility and an extra return, making the whole enterprise better value still. There is a web page dedicated to rentals that can be found at: http://www.barnsdalehotel.co.uk/ rentals-2014-c226.html

A Barnsdale timeshare amounts to an incredible four-in-one package The start point for a timeshare is to choose a property on the site – there is a choice of properties by type and size, sleeping from 2 to 8 people, all set in the beautiful grounds with views over the water. Prices begin from £1,200 for a specific week, lasting 14 years. Included in your seasonal ownership you have the following: 1. Use of all the resort facilities during your holiday 2. Concessionary use of the Leisure facilities all year round 3. Your lodge kept in top condition: a) Preparation of the lodge for your arrival b) The lodge is cleaned and closed upon your departure c) There is an annual maintenance fee, which covers all maintenance needs for your property 4. The ability to exchange your timeshare week/s for properties overseas (and Barnsdale is a Gold Crown Resort, so very desirable to others). So if one year you fancy a trip to Spain or the USA or anywhere else. Or you can rent out your own property for cash if you prefer. The timeshare represents excellent value in its own right but, with the benefits of all year round concessionary membership of the leisure facilities and the flexibility on timeshare locations abroad, it is truly unbeatable. And being part of a club, you also get your say. As Russell noted: “When I took over 6 years ago, there were about 20 attendees at the AGM, but now we often get 80, as people have got more and more involved in the whole experience.”

Feedback from a timeshare owner: “Owning a Barnsdale time-share has been a lifestyle choice for us - not only do we have the opportunity to bank and swap our week for fabulous destinations on the continent but we also have all year use of the fabulous facilities: Mini golf, swimming, tennis, gym, squash et al. And for less than the cost of a family membership. Barnsdale is a Gold resort so our exchange possibilities are endless.”

Feedback from a renter “We have been living in the lodges since we sold our house in August and have absolutely loved it. When I had previously heard of local people who travelled 7 miles down the road for a holiday I thought they were completely mad, but having had two months there I can see why - there are few more beautiful views in the country - it has a been a great opportunity to spend lots of quality time with the children, who have loved the crazy golf, swimming, tennis, table tennis and bowls - and the accommodation has been spotlessly clean.”

You can be a part of this fabulous lifestyle too. Just contact us, details below.

THE PLOUGH, GREETHAM Abigail Richardson and Tracy Watkinson completely forget that they are working over this fabulous lunch!

T

he interior décor of The Plough is comfortable and homely and actually a complete contrast to the gastronomic delights that are to be found both at lunch times and in the evenings. The menu is extensive and very exciting and, after much deliberation, Tracy ordered the recommended house special, Smoked Salmon and Crayfish Cocktail (£5.95) which was perfection! Nothing like one would imagine – in fact a genuine piece of art, ‘stuffed’ with fresh fish and topped with a delicate parmesan crisp – ‘superb’! I chose the Sweet Sticky Chilli Beef with cucumber salsa (£5.95) from the weekly specials’ menu and again it was nothing like I imagined – huge chunks of succulent sirloin steak in a very delicate, sweet sauce and again a vision. Both dishes were more than substantial and could easily have passed for a main. We had, though, ordered Mark’s vegetarian special of the day – a Lincolnshire Poacher Frittata with salad and (buttery, salted) new potatoes. Thankfully we had the foresight to share, which left a tiny space to share the, again recommended, Mango Parfait with fresh strawberries and chefs tuille biscuit (£4.95). Both were out of this world. Mark was keen to stress that all his ingredients are fresh and local and 95% of the food is made

The White Horse…One Year On! Steve and Claire Glencross took over the reins of The White Horse in Empingham just over a year ago, in February 2013. They left behind their corporate city worlds, in exchange for the less frenetic shores of Rutland Water where they both grew up. With a keen eye for detail and a vision for perfection, Steve and Claire completely refurbished and the 17th Century former Courthouse creating a haven of peace and tranquility in the heart of Rutland village. “We both have such fond memories of the pub from our childhood and wanted to recreate a place that we would be proud of. We gutted and refurbished the entire body of the pub, stripping it back to how it should be, exposing wonderful natural features such as open fires and wooden floors. We have very high standards and expect the food, beer, service and environment all to be excellent”. After working 24/7 in the lead up to the opening night they look back to memories of exhaustion and terror! However, they needn’t have worried the feedback on that first night and indeed ever since has been overwhelmingly positive to the changes they have made. A fantastic summer followed and The White Horse is fast gaining the reputation as a fabulous dining destination as well as a wonderful place to stay. However, the dynamic pair are not content to rest on their laurels; they have just appointed Head Chef Peter Lane and are looking forward to an even more successful second year. “We are so excited to have Peter on board and have so many plans for the year ahead…so watch this space!” • Contact: The White Horse, Main St, Empingham, Tel: 01780 460221

Reasons to Love April! With summer only just around the corner, now’s the time to invest in your health and beauty routine for a brighter, fresher you. Catherine Batkin looks at the top 5 ways to improve your health and looks this month

1. YOU CAN PLAN YOUR EXERCISE ONLINE: If you think you don’t have time to exercise, think again. Personal Trainer Judith Ewing told me about the latest trend for online personal training: “Our lives are getting busier by the day and whilst face to face personal fitness training is still very popular, more of us are interested in using an online personal training service as it saves time booking appointments and allows you to proceed with your fitness regime at a time that suits you. There are various personal training packages available and they are normally based on a length of time that you feel you would need to meet your fitness requirements. So for example you could buy a 12 week, 16 week or 20 week package. A chat over the phone with the trainer would be the first step to assess your fitness and dietary needs. An exercise programme and dietary package would then be put together by the trainer and sent via email, along with instructions on how and when you should perform the programme. Each week the trainer would keep in touch by phone or skype for an update on how the client is progressing. And of course there is continual contact via Facebook, Twitter or e mail. So there is genuine support and encouragement throughout the training schedule. It really is a fantastic way to get fit and lose weight and is half the price of having a trainer coming to visit you. 2. TREAT YOURSELF TO THESE HOT NEW PRODUCTS: Fed up of lippie that’s always smudging and fading? Then the revolutionary new 2-in-1 lip colour system, Lip Dual, from Leighton Denny could be just the thing your make-up bag needs! Available from The Beauty Room in Oakham, this fab new product is double-sided; one side is a colouring base which can be used to tint the lips and cheeks with coverage that

lasts for an entire day. The other side is a long-lasting lipstick of the same shade to plump lips, adding a rich, creamy colour that adheres to the base for long-lasting staying power. Better still, they’re completely non-sticky and come in 10 fantastic shades to match the Leighton Denny nail polishes. Being a fan of pinky nudes for the daytime, shade 1, Catwalk Queen is on my wish list, closely followed by Ravishing Red (shade 8) for the ultimate statement colour on a night out. Easter Fun Amander Meade suggests some activities to keep families entertained during the Easter break

Woodland Day On Saturday 19 April, a tree-mendous day out in the woods has been organised by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust on the North shore of Rutland Water. Tim Appleton is the Nature Reserve Manager and says, “This is a fun day out for the family. April heralds the start of spring so join us and find out what really makes a wood buzz in spring.” The day consists of guided walks, children’s activities, demonstrations of woodland craft, stalls and refreshments. Entry is £5 per car to include parking. Family Shows… The team at Stamford Theatre has arranged some shows and workshops to delight smaller children including ‘The Just So Stories’. (Monday 7 April, 2.30pm) Rudyard Kipling’s best loved tales explore why the camel has a hump and why the elephant’s nose is so long. Expect lots of interactive singalong fun - perfect for children aged between four and eight and their families. A family ticket is £28. Join Poetry Joe, star of CBeebies Rhyme Rocket, in his light up world at 11am or 2.30pm on Friday 11 April. A fun-packed show suitable for children of three years and over. Tickets are £5 each. There are three great shows to choose from at Curve in Leicester; ‘Dogs Don’t Do Ballet’, ‘The Frog and the Princess’ and the wonderful ‘Three Little Pigs’ by Northern Ballet – a fabulous introduction to ballet for young fans. Details from the Box Office. Enjoy the outdoors with First 4 Adventure A free family walk takes place on Saturday 5 April from 1.15pm led by Andy and Emma from First 4 Adventure UK. The walk will start and finish at Wing Hall (parking available) and will last around three hours. The route will go through surrounding fields and villages and the café at the hall will be open for well-earned refreshments at the end. Visit www.first4adventure.co.uk for details of open walking events around the UK. Take to the stage… Wildcats Academy are offering a daily dose of drama and singing throughout the school holiday fortnight with themes including Hairspray, Horrible Histories, Skellybones, Lion King, High School Musical, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here and Alice in Wonderland. Older participants will be grouped and taught more challenging routines as the age range is between five and sixteen years – all are welcome. Places are £22.50 per day.

GA RDE N I N G

MADE IN CHELSEA

Stamford’s own, award-winning garden designer Adam Frost has created another stunning garden for his 2014 RHS Chelsea Flower Show but, this year he will have a few more green fingered hands to help him – students mentored by him from the newly formed Homebase Garden Academy. Antonia Scott catches up with Adam to discuss his ‘Time to Reflect’ garden, which is sponsored again by Homebase and is in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society

42

A

t this year’s world-renowned RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Adam is hoping to add to his current tally of five gold medals, (and achieve a hat trick for Homebase!) by creating an ornamental, wildlife-friendly garden, inspired by his love for stone, water and the English countryside. The garden is a tranquil environment that can be enjoyed by different generations, while reflecting on and creating new memories together. This year, for the first time, Adam will be joined by the new ‘Homebase Garden Academy’ students during the build of the garden. The 11 students will be helping to make Adam’s design a reality by putting into practice the skills they have learnt since joining the Academy last November. Adam says, “In this garden, I want to remind people just how beneficial the outdoors can be for the whole family. In a world that is so fast-paced, I want to create a garden that encourages us to stop, reflect and spend quality time with each other; whether it’s educating children about nature, or creating a relaxing environment to reminisce with family. Having the ‘Homebase Garden Academy’ students help with this year’s journey is very special for me and for them, as I can see the passion I have filtering through to them”. “Horticulture really did change my life – it’s

been a fascinating journey from apprentice gardener in a North Devon park department to a landscaper and designer and now mentor. The lack of young people going into my industry is a concern to me, so it’s great to know that horticulture will be on the national curriculum from September 2014. I believe this will play an important part in helping people understand their environment and feel a responsibility to leave a greener world and stop pillaging the one we have.”

‘Time to Reflect’ The inspiration and creativity behind Adam’s garden design, ‘Time to Reflect’ was the emotional journey undertaken in 2012, which was a turbulent year evoking painful memories, yet at the same time celebrating the essence of what memories mean to your soul. With the death of his beloved ‘Nan’ at the beginning of the year, followed shortly and suddenly by his father, who had instilled his own love of the North Devon countryside and passion for stone and water into Adam when they worked together, it was to be the hardest year of his life so far. The strong structure of his father’s native landscape with its dramatic rock formations, cascading waters and vibrant colours all stirred up memories of past family life spent

clambering over rocks as a child, enjoying the simplicity of being outdoors. On reflection, although 2012 was Adam’s ‘annus horribilis’, he realised out of memories, we can all create something great: “Putting my garden design, ‘Time to Reflect’ down on paper was such a personal journey for me, remembering the pain I went through that year with the loss of two such integral family members and discovering that my wife was also in need of medical care, I realised that life was never going to be the same again. Yet it was also the most educational year of my life.” The garden sees a fusion of natural stone boulders, copper rills and ornamental plants to capture countryside memories - inspiring people to explore the great outdoors and recreate their own memories. The garden has four different levels to create a pathway and sense of movement. The levels are linked together by natural and hand-crafted stone boulders, which give the option of an alternative path to explore the garden by jumping from boulder to boulder, reminiscent of childhood innocence and exploration. The heather clad arbour roof undulates as a reflection of the North Devon moors and provides somewhere to shelter, cook together as a family and enjoy the views of the garden. Wildlife has again been at the forefront of

“The garden sees a fusion of natural stone boulders, copper rills and ornamental plants to capture countryside memories – inspiring people to explore the great outdoors and recreate their own memories.” Adam’s mind with the arbour roof’s planting providing food for bees and butterflies and log stores under the benches providing shelter for insects; carved oak bird feeders hang from the trees and three ponds attract dragonflies and damsel flies. Adam’s intention was that as you move through the garden, the planting graduates from cool shade-loving woodland plants around the arbour into sun-loving yellow, white and blue plants reminiscent of English spring planting. Carved timber seats inspired by the shape of seed pods are also located throughout the garden – providing the opportunity for people to sit and reflect in the colourful surroundings.

T

he Homebase Garden Academy was born after Adam had an informal chat with one of the Homebase Directors in his ‘shed’ to escape the rain at last year’s Chelsea Flower Show. They discussed ideas on how best to connect with enthusiastic and passionate people who want to grow a career in gardening but don’t know where to start... and thus, the Academy was created! As soon as the ‘Chelsea madness’ had finished, Homebase and Adam then set about hand picking 12 students from the hundreds that applied and last November started to train them at various locations throughout the UK towards a Royal Horticultural Society Level 1 qualification, whilst also giving them a wage. Each student gets their own set of tools, a video camera and netbook to diarise their journey; but perhaps best of all is the incentive of a £1,000 bonus if they successfully graduate from the scheme and a guaranteed job at Homebase, which will hopefully be just the start of an exciting career in horticulture – and perhaps even produce the next Adam Frost! • For Tickets to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show: 20–24th May go to: www.rhs.org.uk • For more information: www.adamfrost.co.uk Tel: 01780 753404

House Cleaning Susan Garon owns the local MOLLY MAID that cleans homes across the area and advocates the benefits in hiring a professional cleaning service. Molly Maid has been operating in Leicestershire for the last 27 years and in the UK for more than 29 years. As a result of their experience and the through training that all of the maids are given, all of the teams are ready for a spring clean rush at this time of year. This means that a team of maids can work through the house surprisingly quickly and efficiently causing the minimum of disruption in the home. Says Susan, “These days spring cleaning need not take up all your reserves of energy - unless of course you crave the satisfaction that comes from moving furniture and discovering for yourself how much dust and grime accumulates in those forgotten corners and crevices. Leisure time has replaced money as the symbol of success and many householders are seeking a bit of help around the home so that they are free to get some well-earned rest and spend time with their family doing the things they enjoy!” • For a no obligation estimate call Susan Garon on Tel: 01858 439925 or susan.garon@mollymaid.co.uk, www.mollymaid.co.uk

Carpet Cleaning With the warmer weather coming now is the perfect time to let the fresh air in and get the dust out. WEAVER LTD can provide you with a free quote for your carpet cleaning and can take precious oriental rugs to their specialist cleaning facility in Pillings Road Oakham. Says David Weaver, “It’s time to remove all of that winter grit, salt and soil from deep within the pile of your carpets and precious oriental rugs. These types of soil need to be removed to prevent long term damage to the fibres and to help extend the life of your valuable soft furnishings. We have rug vibration machines, high performance rug drying centrifuges and high pressure cleaning equipment designed specifically for the carefully cleaning and drying your rugs, tapestries, antique and fine fabrics. We can also provide stain removal, allergen treatments, moth and stain protection.” • If your carpets and rugs deserve the best spring clean then Contact Tel: 01572 759 899 or visit www.weaverltd.co.uk - With fully treatments insurance and members of the NCCA

Chimney Sweeping It used to be the case that chimney sweeping could make a right awful mess in anybody’s living room. Having it swept before a spring clean was a good idea in those dark days! These days, however chimney sweeps use state of the art technology. Russell Peace explains, “All chimney flues are different and require a variety of sweeping methods. The end result is generally the same. A clean chimney and no mess in the front room. A chimney swept by a qualified chimney sweep can be swept at any time without any mess!” • Contact Russell on Tel: 01536 510865, www.chimneysweepnorthants.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2014

LUNCHCLUB est 1983 Stamford Ladies’ Lunch Club Invites New Members!

Garden Classics at Rutland Garden Centre Chris and Sharon Hamilton run Rutland Garden Classics, a local business specialising in vintage, antique and reclaimed garden ornamentation. Chris is an expert in the field of garden antiquities and describes running his business as “The best job in the world. I just love searching out fantastic garden items and my travels take me all over the UK and Europe. I was in China recently sourcing cast iron products which was an amazing trip.” Chris and Sharon operate from premises at Rutland Garden Centre and have a huge selection of constantly changing stock to embellish every kind of garden from a postage stamp to a stately home. “We have statues, straddle stones, wrought iron gazebos, gargoyles, stone planters and much more. Items are priced from £5 to £2,000 so there is something to suit all tastes and budgets. There is no high pressure sell here – browsers are very welcome to come up and see us, have a coffee and chat about what they like. We provide a sourcing service so if you have something in mind that you can’t see within our current stock, we will do our best to find it for you.” Many of the pieces on sale are antique or have an aged look that fits in beautifully with the current popular trend towards vintage style interiors and Chris thinks that gardens deserve the same decorative treatment. “Very often when homeowners downsize or move house, they take the opportunity to sell unwanted furniture or decorative housewares, forgetting they might have overlooked treasures outside. We are always interested in buying garden architecture when people move on. We pay cash and will transport the pieces immediately, giving customers an opportunity to sell in a specialist market.” • Find Rutland Garden Classics at Rutland Garden Centre, Ashwell Road, Oakham LE15 7QN Tel: 01572 720070 (Office), Chris Hamilton 07850 999522 www.rutlandgardenclassics.co.uk

UPDATES New Rutland County Showground & Rutland Pavilion is to be opened by Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Over 250 local dignities and guests will be attending the Opening Ceremony and drinks reception on Thursday April 24th to see the new Pavilion building opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Laurence Howard. The new Rutland Showground is the result of 10 years of hard work by the Society to secure its future. The County Show outgrew its original 28 acre showground site in Barlythorpe Road over 25 years ago so the move was made to Burley on the Hill owned by Joss Hanbury, whilst the society was extremely grateful to Joss for his generosity in enabling them to hold the show at Burley the time has now come for a move. “The show is entering a new era and with that comes new ideas”, says Emma Dodds, the new Show Director of the site. “And for this year we are giving the County Show (which takes place on Sunday 1st June) an overhaul whilst still celebrating what’s great about Rutland, farming and craft. Our emphasis is on encouraging families and new people to the show that may be under the impression a County Show isn’t for them – where else can you go for a fun family day out for less than £16?” • The secretary encourages everyone to have a look at the new website for the ‘Very Early Bird’ tickets available to buy online.

Oakham School hosts a ‘Big Night Out’ Oakham School’s ‘Big Night Out’ recently raised approximately £15,000 for a range of charities as well as contributing towards the upcoming sports tour to South Africa. Two sporting heroes spoke during the evening - Rugby World Cup winning Captain, Martin Johnson CBE, and Olympic Badminton Silver Medallist and World Champion Gail Emms CBE. Director of Sport, Iain Simpson was, “Delighted that so much money has been raised to support such a great range of charities (and was) incredibly proud of the pupils who worked so hard to help organise and run the evening”. Martin Johnson imparted some great advice to the 125 pupils who are going on tour later this year. He said that to go abroad and win games was incredibly hard as you have to overcome the local advantage of having their supporters watching the game. He suggested that when the pupils were nervous, tense and anxious before a match, that they should catch the eyes of their team mates, to give them confidence. During her speech, Gail reminisced about her own school days and the importance of having good role models. She described how her mother had introduced her to badminton at an early age and that one of her proudest moments was finally managing to win a game against her! The auction, to raise money for a range of different charities, both in South Africa and the UK, included a wide variety of items from signed rugby and cricket shirts, to a week on a yacht in Greece. The charities include

50

The Bobs for Good Foundation, which helps underprivileged children in South Africa, and is run by Former Springbok rugby player Bob Skinstad. During their tour, Oakham School pupils will do a ‘foot drop’, where they will deliver shoes to a school in a township in Cape Town. £1,000 of the money raised during the evening will also be donated to Sports Aid, of which Gail Emms is an Ambassador. The charity, which has been long supported by Oakham School, helps the sports stars of tomorrow today by giving them cash awards during the defining early years of their careers. Another charity to benefit from the evening will be Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. The School has been supporting this charity since Oakham’s International Hockey Coach, Martin Scanlon, began to battle against the disease for the second time. £1,500 was raised from the auction of a dinner with 4 GB hockey internationals – Georgie Twigg, Maddie Hinch, Ellie Watton and Holly Webb.

A Restoration Drama The story of No. 45 High Street, Ketton, by Martin Smith

I

’m going to admit a guilty pleasure. I like watching those programmes on TV about Martin Smith restoring hopelessly decrepit houses. You know the ones, where the naïve owners are pushed to financial and emotional meltdown, goaded by a smug presenter who mercilessly exploits every disaster in what is now a familiar soap opera. Well, let’s say upfront, that our restoration drama doesn’t contain any of those edge of the seat cliff-hangers. If that’s your thing, then I’m sure there’s a repeat episode of Restoration Home now showing on More4 +1. Rather, it’s the story of taking an ugly duckling and slowly finding that a beautiful bird lies within. And it’s a journey that ends with us attending an awards ceremony at Oakham Castle and unexpectedly winning a prize, in the teeth of some much grander projects. For, let’s be clear, this is not a posh house. I first noticed it driving to work every day thinking ‘who would want to live there?’. It looked like a Victorian terrace, attached to a derelict house and former garage, on one of the most frustrating bits of Ketton for any flustered commuter. If you drive that way, you’ll know the bit. It’s where there’s always a row of parked cars and you have to give way to oncoming traffic because the road’s too narrow. The temptation is to try and squeeze through, and that’s when you hear the sound of horns and screeching tyres. The wing mirror of our car got knocked off shortly after we moved here… Anyway, as fate would have it, a few years later we were there in the house viewing it. I was reluctant at first, but had been persuaded to go along – it had 4 bedrooms and we needed the space for the kids. It was also at a price we could afford and it did look old, sort of - and as you might have guessed, I like old buildings. The first impressions were not

54

auspicious. A modernised interior - all very nice but not our kind of thing. There was a cellar, but it was full of rubbish, with a serious damp problem – more a wet room really. Then there were the nasty plastic windows and the revelation that you didn’t own most of the rear garden – it was earmarked for car parking for a new development of houses. Oh, and there were two planning enforcements in place, meaning you would need to apply for planning permission to use what was left of the garden! So that should have been that. But instead we went back for a second viewing. We started to notice historic features dotted about here and there. A bit of old stone wall, or a black-painted beam. Then we discovered that this ‘Victorian’ house was in fact a grade 2 listed Georgian house, built around 1780. There was a Collyweston slate roof and a fine ashlar façade, expertly crafted in creamy Ketton stone - only it was spoilt by those plastic windows. For many, the discovery it was listed would have been the final nail in the coffin. But, instead, we found ourselves putting in an offer, which was accepted. We took possession of the house in February 2012 and the first job was to pull up the carpets. We had been fantasising about having a nice chequered terracotta tile hallway and had been looking at tiles online. Imagine our surprise, when we peeled away layers and found an original set of just such tiles underneath the damp, rotting underlay. The ‘play room’ at the back revealed a lovely stone-flagged floor, now our dining room. Upstairs there were those nice really-wide Georgian floorboards, a bit knackered, but just waiting to be sanded and polished. Now began the serious work and the raiding of the savings pot. The

House (before)

cellar had suffered from years of rain water pouring down the coal hole from the pavement outside. The timbers supporting the main wall at the front were seriously damp, well, soaked would be more accurate. So we cleared out the muck, damp-proofed and tanked the stone walls and created a whole new subterranean room, now lit from a glass panel in the old coal hole. This is now the studio domain of our eldest teenage son and appears to function as a nightclub. Of course the windows had to go. It took over a year, but we managed to source a local firm, Traditional Timber Windows in Sleaford, to handmake and install some beautiful hardwood sash windows and doors. The windows use this new 4mm thin double-glazing which means they look like single pane sashes, but keep the road noise out, and the heat in. The ethos, as the work continued, was to create a historic interior – not some modern scheme in an old shell, but something with genuine atmosphere, like you’ve just stepped back in time. And we think that was one of the reasons that we were honoured when the Rutland Local History and Record Society chose our house for the 2013 Tony Traylen award. We weren’t the most prestigious project, but ours had a certain character. As one judge said during the tour, the house reminded her of Dennis Severs’ house in Folgate Street, London, a place where it appears that an 18th-century family have just popped out for some milk. So, what do our kids make of living in a time warp? Well our ten-year old daughter, when asked where she would like to live, said without hesitation, ‘Definitely in a modern house – one that’s bright and nice and clean’. Ah well, you can’t win them all! • The Tony Traylen and George Phillips Awards, organised by the Rutland Local History and Record Society in conjunction with Rutland County Council, were announced and presented at a ceremony at Oakham Castle on Thursday 30th January 2014. MARKET HARBOROUGH TOWN AND COUNTRY STROLL This walk has just about everything – an ancient village, a thriving town centre packed full of history, a delightful town park and a canal. You will feel you know a very great deal more about Market Harborough once you have done this walk, whether you have lived in the town for years or you are just visiting for the day. Nicholas Rudd-Jones walked it on a glorious early spring day

POINTS OF INTEREST Great Bowden is a quintessential English village, with a charming village green and church. The village was included in the Domesday Book, under the name ‘Bugedone’ and was worth 40 shillings per year to the King, who held it. It has Anglo-Saxon origins.

The Old Grammar School stands on wooden stilts. The school room had to be built upon posts to allow the butter market to be held on the ground floor. The School was founded in 1607 and built in 1614, through the generosity of Robert Smyth, a poor native of the town who became Comptroller of the Lord Mayor’s Court of the City of London and member of the Merchant Taylors’ Company. The subjects taught were Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and many boys were sent to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The most distinguished of these was John Moore, who became Bishop of Norwich in 1691 and William Henry Bragg, Nobel Prize winner. (restoration is expected to be completed in September 2014) The Victorian Symington Building, formerly a corset factory, has undergone a major transformation in the past 12 months. It now houses the integrated Harborough Museum and Harborough Library in a new learning and heritage hub, as well as shops, businesses and some county council services.

The River Welland, which runs through Welland Park, is 65 miles in length. The river rises in the Hothorpe Hills, at Sibbertoft in Northamptonshire, then flows northeast to Market Harborough, Stamford and Spalding, to reach The Wash near Fosdyke. It’s interesting to note that its width in Market Harborough is only about a third of what it is in Stamford, probably because steep embankments were created on either side to prevent flooding. Grand Union Canal Market Harborough Arm, from Foxton Locks to Union Wharf in Market Harborough. Completed in 1809 the original idea was to continue the Arm from Market Harborough on through to Northampton - it never happened. Union Wharf has a place in canal history as the location of the first canal rally in Britain held in 1950, which was fundamental to the preservation of the canal network for prosperity.

Turn right into the high street, past the Grammar School, into the Town Square and past the war memorial, and then cross the river by a footbridge with the car park immediately on your right (toilets here if needed) Once over the bridge, turn right, and you will shortly enter Welland Park; follow the river right to the end of the park, until you come out on Farndon Rd; turn right, follow it up to the junction with Coventry Rd, then take Logan St, directly N opposite; continue into Logan Crescent, and after a few yards you will see a cut-through to the canal On reaching the canal, turn LEFT (Union Wharf makes an interesting brief detour to the right). Follow the canal for 2 miles, under two road bridges. When you pass under Bridge No. 9 ( Sedgley’s Bridge) turn immediately right up the bank, joining a path that takes you back to Great Bowden

Award Winning Fundraiser, Lorna Grey At the end of last year, Lorna Grey was ‘proud and delighted’ to be awarded the ‘Inspired in Rutland’ Award in association with the British Red Cross, following a nomination by her husband Allan. Amander Meade met her to find out more about her work as a volunteer for the Make A Wish Foundation Why did you decide to become involved with Make A Wish (MAW)? “Nine years ago I suffered a brain haemorrhage and took almost a year to recover but I didn’t want to sit around doing nothing, so I became a volunteer at the Age UK charity shop in Oakham and helped out at the Make a Wish office. I was a teacher in my working life and became more and more interested in the work of MAW – especially as our own daughter was born with a congenital heart defect and was given only a small chance of survival – she is happily now thirty six years old and a mum herself! I hope that my own experience has helped make me empathetic towards families in an intolerable situation.” What’s your MAW role now? “The charity provides ‘wishes’ for young people between three and seventeen years of age with life threatening conditions. I trained to become a Wish Visitor and I visit families across the region to talk about what their wishes are and how we can best accommodate them.” What kind of things do children wish for? “All kinds of things and the majority are not requests for expensive holidays or experiences. We arranged for one little girl to be Cinderella for the day at Stapleford Park; one young man wanted to visit the Harry Potter set and some just ask for a laptop or x-box to play on. Sometimes we arrange for children to meet a pop star or celebrity and its part of my job to provide the charity with a report on what the range of possibilities might be.” Tell us about your trip last year to volunteer in the USA “Give Kids The World Village is a non-profit resort in Kissimmee, Florida for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The resort’s focus is providing accommodation and access to donated theme park tickets as well as providing a safe environment for families to spend some time together. Make A Wish and many other organisations send families there from all over the world. I read a blog by another

MAW volunteer who had visited and decided I would make the trip myself accompanied by an old friend and during my fourteen day stay I clocked up over seventy two hours of volunteering. We did meeting and greeting, train driving as well as serving breakfasts and lunches and much more besides. The Village is free of debt and it is said that 93.5 cents of every dollar donated or raised goes directly to the children, the other 6.5 cents goes on administration. Everything in the park is donated from food to toilet rolls, plumbers to gardeners and there are volunteers of all ages – I met a gentleman in his nineties. We had a wonderful time and met some incredible young people and their families. We funded our own costs of course but the value of what we brought home with us from the experience was priceless. I will be going back next year if I can.” “People often tell me they couldn’t be around sick children – it would upset them too much but with all the work I have done for Make A Wish I never see ‘poorly’ children, only happy children making memories.”

Contact Lorna: Lorna has helped raise around £20,000 for Make A Wish – some of which came from a sponsored jump from the Auckland Sky Tower in New Zealand on her sixtieth birthday. If you would like to find out more about fundraising on behalf of the charity or to book Lorna for a talk to a club or a society, you can contact her at Tel: 01572 755863 or email her at lornaj.grey@virgin.net RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING APRIL 2014
