On 9 April 2016 the World Travel Awards Grand Tour made its first stop of the year in Zanzibar, Tanzania for the Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony. The prestigious event was held at the exquisite Diamonds La Gemma dell'Est resort and attracted industry professionals from all corners of the world. The weekend program offered attendees a guided tour of Zanzibar which included a leg in historic Stone Town, as well as ample time to explore the superb host resort. The main event was a red carpet affair that included excellent local entertainment before, during and after the ceremony, and brought together hoteliers, marketers, salespeople, big operators, and many other industry professionals. A showcase not only for Zanzibar and Tanzania, but Africa as whole, the event came at the perfect time as tourism – which is a $40 billion industry for Africa – has slowed following a recent spate of negative publicity. It offered an opportunity for the conversation to be changed and for the continent to show that it is still a premier tourism destination.

Africa's Leading LowCost Airline 2016

Since its inception in 2012 fastjet has been led by a deceptively simple, singular philosophy: “air travel should be easy. Undoubtedly a more daunting task than it seems, fastjet has put in the hard work behind the scenes to offer a service that is only affordable and effective, but also secured it the title of Africa's Leading LowCost Airline 2016 at the World Travel Awards.

Currently flying from five airports in Tanzania, with international connections to Johannesburg, Lusaka, Harare, Entebbe, and Nairobi, fastjet aims to offer many more East Africa destinations in the near future. The airline also operates three routes from its Zimbabwe base namely, Harare to Victoria Falls and Johannesburg, and Victoria Falls to Johannesburg.

The airline’s seemingly impossibly affordable rates have been made possible by eliminating all unnecessary expenses and “frills.” The fastjet model allows passengers to choose which inflight services they’d like to make use of, instead of including everything without the option to opt out, and has seen fares as low as $10 one way. All this never comes at the expense of quality though, and fastjet operates under international standards of safety, quality, security and reliability.

Africa's Leading Low-Cost Airline 2016

The user-friendly model extends to all branches of its offering, allowing customers to book flights online, via a mobile phone, at local travel agents or at one of its regional sales offices. Similarly, the airline is pushing for its website to become Africa’s online travel hub. Despite being a relatively young airline, fastjet has already flown almost 2 000 000 passengers across the African continent and can boast that 80% of its customers are return flyers.

Africa's Leading Luxury Private Villa 2016

Cottar's Bush Villa

Inspired by the exhilarating tales of Theodore Roosevelt’s exploits in the African bush, Charles Cottar set off for the continent from America in 1909 and promptly fell in love with it. Within a few years of his arrival he had established himself as a foremost professional hunter and safari guide in East Africa, and in 1915 he settled for good in Kenya with his family. In 1919, together with his sons Mike, Bud and Ted, he established his namesake safari service. Almost 80 years later his great grandson Calvin, with his wife Louise, began Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp in the Masai Mara which more recently added Cottar’s Bush Villa to its offering. Set on the outskirts of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Cottar's Bush Villa was designed by the same couple and built by hand employing indigenous and eco-friendly materials. It overlooks the abundant savannah plains where the enormous wildebeest and ze-

bra herds roam, and guests can enjoy privately guided game drives, night game drives, bush walks, swimming and fishing. The renowned levels of luxury and service that made the 1920s Safari Camp one of the most respected services in the region are present in every detail at Cottar’s Bush Villa. It combines the utmost privacy with the highest levels of personal service and luxury, creating an African experience unlike any other. At over 3000 square-meters, the villa features a spacious living room, a dining room, an expansive viewing deck, and five en-suite bedrooms. It has eight dedicated staff who are on-call throughout the day and night, and a dedicated game drive vehicle and guides are available for the duration of guests’ stays. All this considered, it’s hardly a surprise that it was awarded Africa's Leading Luxury Private Villa at the World Travel Awards.

Mantis Collection

Internationally renowned for its award-winning, five-star properties around the world, the Mantis Collection is a family run operation that specialises in five distinct areas, Boutique Hotels, Game Reserves, Eco Lodges, Ski Lodges, and Chalets and Yachts. Regardless of which group a property falls into, visitors can rest assured that it will offer the same level of luxury and service that has become synonymous with the brand. Found in 2000 by Adrian Gardiner, the Mantis Collection took its name and much of its

philosophy from the Bushmen or San people of Africa. They revered the small insect, which reminded them to see the value in the little things. Similarly, the Mantis Collection knows that by getting the little things right, the bigger things will follow suit. This was the case with its first property, which began as a patch of eroded and abused land but grew into the impressive Shamwari Game Reserve. This first property also reflected another integral part of Mantis’ operating philosophy: its commitment to conservation and restoration of natural habitats.

Awarded Africa’s Leading Boutique Hotel Brand at the World Travel Awards every year since 2009, the Mantis Collection boasts 16 boutique properties across Africa. Each has its own unique appeal, and represent the finest example of its kind. Celebrating the culture, cuisine, architecture, and nature of their host area, they offer guests an unforgettable, immersive experience. They also all emulate the high standards of quality and service that makes the Mantis Collection so special.
