Dizem que a culpa é da luz. Para o visitante, Lisboa é um lugar iluminado por onde quer que se lá chegue. Por terra escolhe-se a Ponte 25 de Abril para ver Lisboa estendida sobre a costa como se se espreguiçasse, com a imensa estátua do Cristo Rei sem se saber se abençoa Lisboa ou se, de braços abertos, vai dizendo em tom de elogio à cidade: ‘e quem será capaz de fazer melhor do que isto?’ Para quem vem do ar, que o faça de noite. As luzes abaixo lembram uma arca de joias de pirata até se ver o céu refletido no rio Tejo e mal se ouvir a tranquila algazarra das ruas. E por mar, pelo mesmo caminho de partida que no século XV fez Portugal dar novos mundos ao mundo, quem nos visita sente o último fôlego do Atlântico antes de se atirar ao rio, um desfile de praias sem fim à vista como se Lisboa e o que vem antes dela escolhessem este verão para viver para o prazer.

Lisboa tem mais sonhos que contradições. Quer andar de bicicleta num lugar com sete colinas, quer passear paredão fora como se vivesse de uma reforma dourada, quer chapinhar na água do rio e imaginar os golfinhos que ainda fazem o caminho de regresso ao Tejo, anseia por um lugar decorado todo o ano a arquinho e balão, a cheirar a manjerico e com sabor de sardinha assada, onde o melhor graffiti da arte urbana descobre que o azulejo é o seu próprio avô. Deseja, acima do resto, compreender com a mesma pureza de alma e espanto nos sentidos o que leva o visitante a apaixonar-se por Lisboa à primeira vez, um bairro de cada vez.

They say the magic is in the light. To the visitor, Lisbon appears illuminated from whatever direction it is reached. Approaching by land, the 25th of April Bridge looks down upon a Lisbon languidly stretched out along the coast‐ line and watched over by the towering Cristo Rei statue. It is unclear whether Christ, the King, blesses Lisbon from the opposite bank, or stands with open arms thinking “who can do better than this?” For those arriving by plane, it is best to come at night. The twinkling lights below resemble a pirate’s treasure chest until one sees the sky reflected in the Tagus River and begins to hear the muted hustle and bustle in the streets. By sea, following the same route that in the 15th century saw Portuguese explorers bring new worlds to the world, those who navigate into Lisbon feel the last breath of the Atlantic before it plunges into the river, and behold an endless parade of beaches, as if Lisbon Lisbon has more aspirations than contradictions. It wants to ride bicycles in a city with seven hills; it wants to promenade along the coast as if enjoying a golden retirement; it wants to splash in the river while imagining dolphins on their way back to the Tagus; it yearns for a city permanently decorated with balloons and festive banners, smelling of marjoram and tasting of grilled sardines, where the best of graffiti urban art discovers that azulejo tiles are its ancestor. It desires, above all else, to understand – with the same purity of soul and astonishment of the senses – what causes visitors to fall in love with Lisbon at first sight, one neighbourhood at a time.

A masterpiece of Manueline style, it was the great sea gateway to Lisbon. When entering Tagus, the boats would be welcomed by this magnificent Tower with its architecture resembling a Portuguese galleon.

It gathers one of the world’s best collections of leisure and celebration vehicles ranging from the 16th to the 19th century in a building designed by architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha.

The gigantic aquarium has four main tanks representing the Antartic, the Indian, the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, filled with countless different species.

Established on the 28th of May 1884, the Lisbon Zoo has one of the best zoological collections in the World, installed in environments very close to their natural habitat.

Fica na zona adjacente ao Aeroporto de Lisboa/ General Humberto Delgado, estação de fim-de-linha desenhada pelo arquitecto Leopoldo de Almeida Rosa. Átrio e cais são ‘ilustrados’ por obras do brilhante cartoonista António Antunes retratando figuras históricas e contemporâneas das artes e da sociedade portuguesa.

Estação que serve a Gare Intermodal de Lisboa no Parque das Nações. É assinada pelo arquitecto Sanchez Jorge e as obras de arte versam os oceanos (o tema da EXPO 98) pela mão de 11 artistas dos cinco continentes, entre eles o português Joaquim Rodrigo, o austríaco Hundertwasser e o islandês Erró.

In the premises of Lisbon Airport/General Humberto Delgado. Terminal station designed by architect Leopoldo de Almeida Rosa. Hall and platforms are illustrated with works by the brilliant cartoonist Antonio Antunes portraying historic and contemporary figures of portuguese society and arts.

The station serves the Intermodal Terminal of Lisbon at Parque das Nações. BAIXA-CHIADO

O consenso impera na intervenção do polémico arquitecto Tomás Taveira, da enorme colunata forçada pelo pé direito do cais à ‘marca’ pessoal da policromia berrante. A estação recebeu escultura, baixo-relevo e painel cerâmico de quatro artistas renomados: Pedro Cabrita Reis, Graça Pereira Coutinho, Pedro Calapez e Rui Sanchez.

Correspondência de duas linhas (Azul e Verde), é das mais movimentadas do Metro. Abriu em 1998 segundo projecto de Álvaro Siza Vieira que 10 anos antes liderara a reconstrução da zona depois do incêndio do Chiado. Luminosa e despida de artifícios, conta com azulejos de Ângelo de Sousa nos acessos à rua.

The controversial architect Tomás Taveira achieved the greatest consensus with his intervention, from the huge line of columns to the ‘outcrying polychromy’ that is Taveira’s brand. The station is adorned with sculpture, bas relief and tile panels by Pedro Cabrita Reis, Graça Pareira Coutinho, Pedro Calapez and Rui Sanchez.

Station where the blue and green lines meet and one of the most busy of the whole Lisbon Metro.

Opened in 1998 according to a project by Álvaro Siza Vieira, the architect that 10 years previously lead the rebuild of the entire area after a devastating fire hit Chiado. Luminous and without artificial adornments, it has tile panels by Angelo de Sousa in the access to the street above.

Estação da rede inaugural do Metro (1959).

Original do arquitecto Falcão e Cunha, foi totalmente remodelada em 1994 por Duarte Nuno Simões e Nuno Simões. Manteve as ‘ilustrações’ de Maria Keil e juntou-lhe as belas esculturas de Francisco Simões, homenagem em mármore às gentes do campo que desde 1900 aportavam a Lisboa.

Estação de correspondência com a linha de comboio de Cascais e o tráfego fluvial para a ‘Outra Banda’, em projecto do arquitecto Nuno Teotónio Pereira. As ideias do surrealista António Dacosta foram reinterpretadas por Pedro Morais, destacando-se o Coelho Apressado de ‘Alice no País das Maravilhas’ que segue as linhas da estação.

Station included in the inaugural Metro net (1959). First designed by architect Falcão e Cunha, Campo Pequeno got a total renewal in 1994

Abriu ao público em 1988 quando da extensão da rede à zona de Benfica e nasce de um projecto do arquitecto Ezequiel Nicolau. A decoração é de Júlio Pomar e enaltece no seu desenho grandes poetas portugueses (Camões, Bocage, Pessoa ou Almada) a par de ‘graffitis’ do pintor, em antecipada jogada aos grafiteiros anónimos…

Uma das mais jovens estações da actual rede de Metropolitano, inaugurada nos finais de 2007 sob projecto do arquitecto Artur Rosa. A intervenção de arte deve-se a João Rodrigues Vieira e tem por título ‘Transparência II’, painel de azulejos na zona pública, ao átrio principal, forma de ‘vitral’ produzido pela Fábrica Viúva Lamego.

Opened in 1988 when the extension of the Metro’s net reached the Benfica area. Designed by architect Ezequiel Nicolau.
