July 2021 Charolais Magazine

As this is my first report, it is appropriate to thank Brendan Schiewe for his contribution as President of the Society for the last three years. Amongst many other achievements during his term Brendan was heavily involved with the 2020 World Congress committee, planning and preparing for the event, travelling to inspect venues that were being evaluated for their suitability to ensure the tour would present a lifetime memory for International and Australian participants. The decision that was made due to Covid 19 to cancel the World Congress has been proven correct for everyone involved and the Society. Beef Australia 2021 was held earlier this month at Rockhampton and the Nutrien Livestock Stud Cattle Competitions were strongly contested by Charolais entries from Queensland and New South Wales members. Congratulations are extended to the Price family with the award of Grand Champion female with Moongool Radical 26. Congratulations also to the Grand Champion Male, 4 Ways Quantum exhibited by 4 Ways Charolais. The following day the Charolais Breed enjoyed Australia wide exposure in the Interbreed competition, which saw thirty beef breeds compete for the Supreme Female exhibit. Moongool Charolais entry, Moongool Radical 26 was awarded Supreme Female Exhibit. Once again our congratulations are extended to the Price family and Moongool Charolais. It was pleasing to make contact with members involved in showing and assisting with the organisation of show day. Our recognition and appreciation is extended to all Charolais members who exhibited cattle and assisted on judging day. The cattle in the sheds were well maintained and visually presented a high standard that justifies the efforts and results achieved by the breed at Rockhampton. This year Colin Rex initiated relocation of the Society stand to inside the Cattle shed adjacent to the cattle and this was well received by members, exhibitors and the public. During Beef Australia, I had the opportunity to discuss with members how their farms and breeding programmes were recovering following the drought to gain insight over the short-term outlook for the breed. The opinions expressed reflected the strongest level of confidence I have heard for years specifically about the new benchmarks that have been created in the beef industry for consistently higher pricing that is available in most markets vendors are selling commercial product into.

It follows that if the economic recovery has arrived in our industry over the next few years the level of demand for stud stock including Bulls and females must rise. Currently we have already witnessed an increased number Stud Stock sales for bulls and females at higher prices. These are very positive trends for Charolais breeders knowing that Charolais demonstrate a definite superiority in growth ability, feedlot gains and carcase quality. The Society has made available a variety of specialised services that will add to your profitability over time. These include participating in Charolais Breedplan that is a modern genetics evaluation system for beef cattle producers. It offers bull breeders the potential to accelerate genetic progress in their herds and to provide objective information on stock sold to commercial producers. I encourage you to participate in BREEDPLAN to better understand your animal’s performance and hereditability of each trait and the relationships between the different traits. Through your involvement, you will be helping the Charolais Breed at large to obtain a more dependable and reliable performance system. Over the last year the Board had been discussing opportunities for the acquisition of a property suitable for our office and two properties of interest had been considered for purchase that did not proceed for commercial reasons. Recently the Society evaluated a third property in Dangar Street, Armidale that has subsequently been purchased. The Society’s office will be relocated there once the fit out has been completed. The Society has the financial reserves that have enabled the property purchase to be made and the saving from rent reductions offsets the minimal interest income foregone. The current rate of interest being earnt on the Society’s funds are at record lows and this was factored into the assessment prior to the decision. I would like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment from Colin, Hayley, Deearn and Lucy who provide our members answers and solutions daily in an efficient and effective manner without fuss.

Customers don’t measure you on how hard you tried. They measure you on what you deliver

The Australian beef industry is having a well-deserved bright spot. Rain in many regions and feed have boosted beef confidence, which has translated into record high prices. Meat, Livestock Australia [MLA] reports, “The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) broke the 900¢/kg barrier for the first time in history in April, as Queensland producers looking to restock drove the market higher. Carcase weights are expected to jump 3% this year, as the abundance of pasture and cheap feed translates into heavier weights. The record prices are also current incentives for producers and feedlots to add additional weight to animals. These are great signs for our industry. In nearly every industry, consumers have choice. The old saying the customer is always right breaks down to it is their choice. To drive their business they make choices, which may be good or bad but ultimately they reap the reward or pay the price. Customers expect results. Customers will hold businesses accountable for a product that fails to deliver. These are basic facts about business. In the beef industry, there are numerous choices for farmers to produce the next crop of calves. Australian Registered Cattle Breeders report there are 37 beef breeds in Australia plus extra composite bulls produced from them. Even accounting for strong confidence in the industry Charolais continue to be a shining light. This year at auction 449 Charolais sires have sold to date compared to 315 at the same time last year. The average has been $8,140 compared to $6,452 in 2020. Producers with bull purchasing budgets could have bought from any other breed but they have chosen to utilise the Charolais advantage. The expectation is this trend will carry through into the coming spring sales. Charolais genetics take advantage of feed and stack on weight. The calf to the left is a great example. Registered Charolais females have also met with strong demand. This year 428 females have sold at auction for a $6,312 average. Three of the seven female sales to date have recorded tops over $23,000 highlighting again the current confidence in the breed. Another KPI in breed society world is membership and 2021 has seen double the usual new membership applications for the first half of the year compared to recent years. Not all our competitors can say that! All positive signs for the future of the breed. Another positive for Charolais is the marked increase in genomic testing. More and more breeders are parent verifying and establishing 100K SNP profiles as well as the usual Homozygous poll testing. This increased testing is giving a higher level of accuracy in our herdbook. Charolais are close to being able to implement Singlestep Genomic evaluation into our BREEDPLAN data. The board has this on our priority list and is working with ABRI and AGBU on this development. Single step will allow higher accuracy on EBV’s at a younger age enhancing the BREEDPLAN evaluation. We are also very close to updating the Charolais Selection Index values with updated production parameters.

The Charolais breed has 1.6 million cows or 20% of the French herd. In France, every 2nd cow in the suckling herd is a Charolais cow! The Charolais is also the leading beef breed in Europe with 25% of the total number of cows. Forty two percent of heifers slaughtered in France, all breeds combined (including dairy breeds) are Charolais. 33% of young cattle slaughtered in France, all breeds combined (including dairy breeds) are Charolais.

Charolais are represented in the Southern Multibreed project (SMB), a collaborative R&D project involving NSW DPI and the University of New England being conducted on five NSW DPI research stations, and the UNE Research Feedlot over the five years, 2020 to 2025. The SMB project will provide an invaluable source of information for seedstock and commercial cattle breeders. The project is co-funded by NSW DPI, UNE, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and the Commonwealth Government through the MLA Donor Company (MDC). This multi-party co-investment will make a significant contribution to the national aim of doubling the rate of genetic gain in the Australian beef herd. The outcomes of the $7.3m SMB project will deliver significant enhancements to the current within-breed genetic evaluations conducted by BREEDPLAN, as well as allowing Australian beef producers for the first time to directly compare animals for all BREEDPLAN traits and assess their genetic merit irrespective of breed. Charolais are the only European breed represented in this project. As a society, we are financially stable and well positioned for the future. This allows us as a breed to row our own boat or collaborate where there is merit, such as the Southern Multibreed. Not all collaboration opportunities have sufficient merit to be involved in and our board has made wise decisions in this regard. David Whitechurch from 4 Ways Charolais, Inverell NSW has recently joined the board as a Federal representative. Matt Collins is our new President after Brendan Scheiwe concluded his maximum three year term as President. Brendan also served two years as President of Charolais Charbray International and we thank him for his contribution both domestically and internationally. As reported later in this publication the Charolais Society has purchased their own office and the move is imminent. This has been a long process and will reap benefits for many years to come. We are hoping to be in the new space by the time you are reading this. Beef Australia proved to be a great event for the industry and once again highlighted the Charolais advantage. The cattle on display, member sites and cattle in commercial competitions were all of a high standard and flew the Charolais flag well.

One out of two crossbred calves are sired by a Charolais. Forty six percent of calves born from crossbreeding are by a Charolais sire (Idèle 2013).

Source: https://charolaise.fr

Sydney Royal also went ahead this year with Sydney RAS President Michael Millner very happy with the event. To all exhibitors that made a leap of faith and presented cattle at these events, thank you. Queensland region has initiated a feedlot trial at Warwick for Charolais cross cattle on feed. The cattle were inducted in late May and we look forward to the outcomes of this weight gain and carcase trial. As we see some breeds race to be homogenous in traits I see the variation across Charolais types is a positive advantage. Commercial producers across an extreme range of production systems have the ability to select the Charolais with traits they require. A Charolais sire to breed in the top end of the Northern Territory could be substantially different in type to a sire for use in a Tasmanian breeding program. Variation in a population is essential to push selection within traits. For example milk, over the last twenty years the Australian EBV average for milk has risen from +3 in 2001 to +7 today. The top EBV for this trait is +29 ranging through to -18. The sire with -18kg for milk may be exceptional for traits that suit a breeder using Charolais in a terminal situation. Lastly a huge thank you to Deearn and Hayley in the lead up to relocating the office. It can be a fine line between paperwork of historical significance and “why would anybody keep this”? As we are moving to a smaller space, it has been a huge exercise to condense history and maintain normal workloads. Colin Rex, General Manager

Beef Australia 2021 For 33 years, Beef Australia has been a feature event of the Australian beef industry. Held every three years the 2021 event seemed unlikely to occur with Covid restrictions and uncertainty back in 2020. All credit to the organising committees to forge ahead and highlight the positives of our industry to the widest audience possible. It would be remiss not to mention the government contribution in staging this event and the political attendance roster was a who’s who of our countries leadership. Prime Minister Scott Morrison spent a full 24 hours in Rockhampton taking in the displays and events. With the dust now well and truly settled (and there was dust) the enormity of staging an event of this magnitude in pandemic times should be acknowledged. It is hard to isolate one element of the success of this multi layered program from stud and commercial cattle, technology advancements, property tours, extensive industry displays and of course the industry networking. The beauty of Beef Australia is it has something for everyone and most visitors leave tired, well fed and no doubt educated. Whilst 2021 lacked the large international visitors, over 115,000 people attended over the five-day program. With an industry celebrating many positives including high cattle prices, low interest rates and improved seasonal conditions for many, deals were done all over the grounds. Charolais judging did welcome Brant and Renita Lewis from Canada who completed their quarantine in time to attend. We hope they enjoyed their “Beef experience” and travelled safely back home after visiting family.

July 2021 Charolais Magazine

The Charolais Society had a site in the cattle sheds this year and it offered a great place to meet with members and visitors. Charolais members entered over 70 head in the stud cattle displays and were well represented in the commercial and carcase competitions. Thank you to all breeders that supported these competitions and placed Charolais in front of the industry. The Society Annual General Meeting was held during Beef Australia. Although only attended by a few, the conversation and debate was lively. Outcomes from this meeting have been sent to all members since Beef. A highlight at the Rabobank Beef Industry Awards dinner was the awarding of the RW Vincent award to David and Prue Bondfield. Presented by the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) when a worthwhile recipient is identified, the RW (Dick) Vincent Award recognises outstanding services to the Australian cattle breeding industry. Dick Vincent was the inaugural president of ARCBA in its present form. In 1979 he took over a failing organisation, with low membership, no money and no program. Through his energy and foresight he restructured it into a true national voice for the registered cattle breeding sector which had 35 breed members within the first two years of his presidency. ARCBA continues to represent the registered cattle industry as an industry lobby group. ARCBA also hosts the Young Breed Leaders workshop and offers the Arthur Rickards Memorial Scholarship award. Reports on stud judging and commercial competitions follow in this publication.

July 2021 Charolais Magazine

Beef Australia was the biggest exhibition of Charolais show cattle in over 20 months and certainly did not disappoint. Judge Reade Radel (Kandoona Red Brahman) and Associate Justin Rohde (Nutrien and JLR Charolais) sorted through the entries with a very early start. So early a foggy haze was still evident giving an eerie atmosphere. Calf champion female was won by Brendale Hayley 16 (P). This heifer sired by Brisbane Interbreed Champion Colinta Levi (P) won the 12 to 15 months heifer class. Exhibited by Brendan and Marnie Scheiwe, Brendale Charolais, Marburg Qld this large framed feminine heifer was praised by the judge for her overall balance and smoothness and had the extra punch, carcase and power to place her over the other heifers in this class. Reserve Calf heifer was won by Glenlea Isabella 14th (P) (R/F) exhibited by Roderick Binny, Glenlea, Coffs Harbour NSW. Sired by Glenlea Just Red (P) this heifer won the baby 9 to 12 months class. The judges commented this heifer carried some extra growth whilst retaining femininity. Calf champion male was the youngest bull on parade with River Run Rocketman (P) winning first the 9 to 12 month class. At just 9 months he weighed 436kg with an Eye Muscle Area (EMA) of 83cm2. Sired by Palgrove Nebraska (P), he was exhibited by P, L & T Haynes, River Run, Linville Qld. Nebraska is sired by high performing Canadian AI sire Winn Man’s Skaggs 663X (P). Mr Radel commented on his calf champion’s carriage, long body and overall structure. River Run also exhibited the second place getter in the baby class.

Senior & Grand Champion Charolais Male, 4 Ways Quantum (P/S) exhibited by 4 Ways Charolais, Inverell NSW with Associate Judge Justin Rohde, Judge Reade Radel, David and Amy Whitechurch and Nutrien’s David McKechnie.

Senior & Grand Champion Charolais Female, Moongool Radical 26 exhibited by Moongool Charolais, Yuleba Qld with Associate Judge Justin Rohde, Judge Reade Radel, Ivan Price, Chloe Kemph and Nutrien’s David McKechnie.

Reserve Calf Champion male was Brendale Ridley also sired by Colinta Levi (P). At 15 months, this bull weighed in at 658kg and impressive 112cm2 EMA. This bull was from the same female line as the Calf Champion Heifer. Class numbers jumped in the junior age groups with strong classes parading in both sexes. Junior Heifer 15 to 17 months was won by Moongool Charolais with their Ascot Headline (P) daughter, Moongool Alice 10 (P)(R/F). Reade commented this class winner was a good bodied heifer with length and spring of rib with great refinement. Second in this class was a heifer shown by Black Duck Charolais and sired by Elders Blackjack 788B (P). Junior champion heifer came from the 17 to 19 months class and exhibited by Roderick Binny. This heifer Glenlea Mandy 2nd (P) was sired by Glenlea Honourable (P) (R/F). This was a strong class and the reserve junior heifer placed second with Glenlea Confidence 32nd also shown by Roderick Binny. The judge commented on this class as a magnificent line of heifers, with great body type and length. The first place heifer carried more femininity with smoothness through the front end than the other heifers. Later selecting these two heifers as divisional champions Mr Reade commented they were outstanding young heifers with mobility, thickness and softness whilst retaining femininity. He also praised their udder development, small teats and placement as desirable. Winning the junior heifer class 19 -21 months was Outlook Dasher Q5 (P) exhibited by Darren Crawford, Young NSW. This heifer was 100% New Zealand Silverstream genetics and sired by Silverstream Frampton F17. Frampton is a trait leader for 200, 400 and 600-day weight. Maternally this heifer is a half-sister to Silverstream Landis L179E (P) who is also a trait leader for 200-day growth. Associate judge Justin Rohde commented on this heifer’s smoothness, carriage, length and femininity. Associate judge Justin Rodhe has been a regular at our Charolais Youth Stampede, it was great to see him so professional and at ease in the judging ring. Second in this class was Glenlea Sandy 8th (P) (R/F) exhibited by Roderick Binny.

Junior bull classes also featured strong competition. Sons of the $83,000 Moongool Lunar Rise (P) won two of the three junior bull classes. Moongool Lunar Rise is a son of Silverstream Evolution E168E (P) who has bred so well for Palgrove and Moongool. Firstly 4 Ways MLR Quebec won the 15 to 17 months class for the Whitechurch Family, Inverell NSW. This bull weighed 782kg at 16 months and scanned a 120cm2 EMA. Second in this class was Brendale Raider (P) sired by Ascot Maximus M607E (P) shown by Brendan and Marnie Scheiwe. Brendale also placed 4th and 5th in this class with sons of this sire. Moongool Queenslander was awarded the third place. The judges commented the first two bulls in the class were more moderate types with great performance, had well developed testicles and heaps of performance. A Lunar Rise son also won the 19 to 21 months class with 4 Ways MLR Qupid (P) also exhibited by 4 Ways Charolais. Weighing in at 816kgs this young sire scanned 115cm2 EMA. This bull was later selected as the Reserve Junior champion bull. Second in the class, was Moongool Qadir sired by Airlie Kris (P) and exhibited by Moongool. Vee-Jay Downs won the 17 to 19 month junior bull class before taking out the Junior champion bull, Vee-Jay Downs Quartermaster (P). This soft red factor calf was sired by DSK TGL Meridian M5E (P/S) by renowned sire Temana Golden Logie G66E (P). A long bodied bull with style Quartermaster weighed in at 19 months, 834kg with 123cm2 EMA. Second in this class was Glenlea Norman Q86 (P)(R/F). cont page 20....

This female then progressed to Senior and Grand champion female and ultimately Interbreed Champion Female for the Price family. Previously this cow was Reserve junior champion heifer at Brisbane Royal in 2019. She paraded with a cracking heifer calf at foot by Airlie Kris. Interbreed Champion Female, Moongool Radical 26 with Justin Rohde, Mark Scholes, Chloe Kemp, exhibitor Ivan Price, judge Brett Kinnon and Rob Clayton.

Setting the Standard The Price Family from the Moongool Charolais stud at Yuleba in Queensland had great reason to smile after Interbreed judging. Their Charolais champion female Moongool Radical 26 won the award giving Moongool consecutive Interbreed Champions at Beef Australia. Their Moongool Thyphena 9 won the same award at the last Beef back in 2018. Judge Brett Kinnon selected the Fleckvieh, Angus, Speckle Park, Red Angus and Charolais in his final row before slapping the Charolais champion. This was only the second show for this female after being the Reserve Junior Champion Heifer at Brisbane Royal in 2019. Moongool Radical 26 is sired by a Full French AI sire in Flabas and has 10 generations of pedigree here in Australia.

Her dam is sired by breed legend Silverstream Evolution E168E who is internationally known. Radical 26 paraded at 31 months with her first calf at foot sired by Airlie Kris. Interesting the Moongool female that won this award in 2018 was also from an Evolution daughter. The judge commented “ you cannot go past the sheer volume and milking capacity of the Charolais cow, she is a real matron type cow and has a lot of maternal traits I’m looking for. Another great statistic to come from this award is Charolais have won Supreme Interbreed Female at Beef Australia eight times from 12 Beef Australia events contested. Bearing in mind, the best come to Rockhamtpon every three years this is an amazing achievement for any breed.

Even more impressive when Charolais are regularly considered a terminal breed. Over fifty years of selection for efficiency in our tough Australian grazing conditions has produced an Australian type of Charolais that is highly functional and structurally correct. This includes maternal traits and the Charolais cows that have won the interbreed at Beef Australia over the years are an exceptional group of females. Moongool has bred two, Crathes one, Advance one and Palgrove four. A look into the pedigrees of this illustrious cohort of females highlight the depth of the breed here in Australia. Of the eight champions, four were sired by an Australian bred sire, three by a Canadian sire and the most recent by a French bull. Santa Gertrudis, Gelbvieh, Brangus and Red Angus breeds each have one Female interbreed so our record should stand until at least 2042!

Grand Champion Pen Commercial Cattle Championships, exhibited by Peter and Matt Quinn, Essex Grazing Co, Middlemount Qld. (Image courtesy QCL).

Commercial Triumph A highlight of Beef Australia is the commercial pen competition at Gracemere. This year 1,566 head entered from leading herds across the north displayed the quality of Australian beef. In what was their first time entering grainfed cattle in a commercial competition, grass-fed producers Peter, Bev and Matt Quinn, Essex Grazing Co, Middlemount, have claimed the grand champion pen honours in the Beef 2021 Commercial Cattle Championships. Their pen of 10 Charbray steers weighing an average of 696.5 kilograms that caught the attention of judges Geoff Teys, Teys Australia, and Robert Barnard, JBS. The family use purebred Charolais and Brahman bulls to produce the Charbray progeny. When asked what they like about that particular crossbreed, Peter pointed to the grand champion pen and said, “It produces that”. HGP treated and fed for 100 days at Lillyvale Feedlot at Condamine, the champion pen of lot-fed steers first took out the blue ribbon in Class 2 – Pen of 10 Steers 640-760kg maximum four teeth, minimum 100 days grain-fed suitable for the export market. Peter Quinn said this was their first major win in a commercial cattle competition. “Winning the chocolates in a competition this big, you don’t do it too often so we’re pretty happy about it,” he said. “It is always good to put cattle up here and feed them and see what they stack up like with the industry’s best, and they obviously stacked up alright.” 24

As well as using the competition to benchmark their cattle, Peter said it’s always fun to take part. You’ve got to participate for the industry and try to put something forward that shows people what we can do with beef in our state and county,” he said. “And if this doesn’t showcase the beef industry, what does,” Matt Quin added. Spread across roughly 32,000 hectares in total at Essex, Middlemount, and Taemas, Charters Towers, the family run a herd of 6000 to 8000 head on country ranging from open forest to brigalow. EU and PCAS accredited, they predominantly sell to Teys Australia for Grasslands branded beef. “We breed and fatten, looking for max kilograms to grass, and have fun doing it,” Peter said. The family have recently added Shorthorn genetics into their breeding program to increase marbling ability. Processors were met with a smorgasbord of prime quality beef when the exhibits in the Commercial Cattle Championships went under the hammer. The 1566 head sold to a top price of 428 cents a kilogram and averaged 588.9kg, to gross $3,644,338. The Quinn family’s grand champion pen made the top steer money. Weighing an average of 614.3kg, they sold to Teys Australia for $2889/hd. (Sourced from QCL)

International Virtual Show 2021 From a region in France the global Charolais influence is a testament to the high production traits the breed possesses. Cattle breeders around the globe have recognised the ability of Charolais to add profit to production systems in a variety of ways. Charolais Charbray International are now looking to showcase this genetic diversity to a global audience with the inaugural International Virtual show. With the aid of technology, the opportunity to show against the best in the world is here. Charolais Charbray International are hosting a Virtual video show in three categories for breeders to market their genetics to a global market. The event has a panel of nine judges from eight countries to assess entries in three categories. Classes are available in Charbray, Purebred and Full French sections highlighting the diversity of our breed internationally. This competition offers breeders enormous marketing potential to shoot to a global audience. Not only will the videos be available to view but also entrants can include an advert for the online show book showcasing their program. Effectively this book becomes a global member directory. An added advantage of this competition is the video can be taken when it suits your cattle allowing presentation of your entry in the best condition. Videos are loaded to Youtube and free to the general public. You just never know who may be surfing the web and come across your cattle in full motion. Members thinking about entering should read the rules on the previous page carefully and follow the link to the international website to watch the sample video as the format will be strictly adhered to. Considering the demand for Australian genetics has increased substantially in the last few years this competition offers a gateway to an international audience. In 2021 our expectation is calves by Australian sires, will be born in USA, Canada, England, Ireland, France, Vietnam and New Zealand at the least. The Charolais Society will also report the major success of any of our members in the January 2022 edition the same as our current Royal shows here.

July 2021 Charolais Magazine

A perfect autumn day met Charolais exhibitors for their return to the judging lawns at Sydney Royal show after a Covid break in 2020. With interstate uncertainty, exhibit numbers were reduced but Judge Miss Hannah Powe found the quality she was looking for. From the outset Hannah commented she was seeking volume, capacity and overall performance in exhibits with that overall growth rate whilst also retaining the ability to finish.” The sole interstate exhibit Black Duck Queen Street (P)(R/F) exhibited by Greg Nicolson took top honours in the Junior Heifer division. Ms Powe commented the winner of the Heifer 16 to 18 months class “really shone out for her overall outlook, she is an extremely stylish female with extra power and performance, strong over the topline and being 3 months in calf at 17 months already exhibiting productive traits”. Sired by Full French sire Gallway (P) and out of a female from the Palgrove Panache line this was the first exhibit from Black Duck stud ever at Sydney Royal show. The Reserve Junior champion heifer came from the 9 to 12 months class. Myona Rosie R8 (P) was exhibited by B Hogland and S Martin. This heifer was sired by SVY Grizzly (P) and stems from the Palgrove Estella line. Myona Charolais was awarded the most successful Charolais exhibitor and then the Most Successful Beef Exhibitor which is a tremendous achievement. Junior members Jordan and Joshua Fenech won the Heifer 12 to 14 months class with a stylish LT Venture 3198 (P) daughter, Stoney Creek Kelly R2E (P). The other junior heifer class was won by Bureen Cattle Company with Yendarra Queenie (P/S) sired by Tractors Ladies Man. Bureen Cattle Company exhibited the Senior and Grand Champion Female with Tractor Nellie (P) and her impressive calf at foot Bureen Nellie (P).

Nellie won the class for Females over 36 months and was sired by Glenlea Honourable (P) from a Gobongo Confidence female. Ms Powe commented “she is a really powerful maternal broody cow, she has got so much width throughout and I appreciate her transition from her shoulder into the body. She has great rib shape, tremendous width on top and she is very fluent on the move on great feet and legs. This cow exhibits excellent volume and capacity”. Myona Charolais exhibited the Reserve Senior champion Female, Myona Lilly N14 (P) who won second place in the same class as the champion. She was sired by Myona Kracka Jack K17 (P). Another daughter of this sire, Myona Regal P16 won the Female 30 to 36 months class with her first calf at foot. Myona also won the Female 20 to 24 months with Myona Regality’s Girl Q5E (P). This heifer was sired by SVY Grizzly and from the same dam as the Reserve senior female. These two females later won the Dams Progeny Class for Myona. Youth Member Heidi Purvis at her Sydney debut won the Bull class 9 to 12 months with her Marthaguy Ranger (P). A son of MVY Xplorer 21X (P) he had a daily weight gain of 1.42kg/ day. Continuing the junior success Jordan and Joshua Fenech won the next class Bull 12 to 14 months with a son of Sydney & National Champion, Caloona Park Little Hero (R/F). The junior and reserve champion bulls came from the 14 to 16 months class. Bureen Cattle Company continued their success with Tractor Rhaegar (P) taking junior champion. This calf was sired by TCW Livestock Knockout (P) and weighed in 724kgs with a daily weight gain of 1.68kg/day. Bureen Cattle Company was formed with the merger of Tractor and Yendara studs based at Singleton in New South Wales.

Sydney Royal 2021 ...cont from page 33 Ms Powe after awarding the junior championship said “this bull is a real high performance bull, he has tremendous length, carcase and softness. He is long bodied, full of muscle with great weight gain. Reserve junior champion bull was Myona Quiz Q16 (P) In the Senior bull division Taylor Made Quintrex (P) (R/F) recently crowned Charolais champion at Canberra Royal show continued his successful run. First taking Senior and then Grand champion bull. Ms Powe said “ this bull is similar to the junior on carcase and muscle shape, he has a tremendous amount of top and so much in the hindquarter, from behind he is very full through the lower leg and twist. This bull is a really soft bull, free through the front end, with good sire appeal and great weight for age”. What she didn’t know was the win was extra special for owners Scott and Jill Taylor from Willow Tree who only got back into showing a few years ago to support handler Tayla Miller from Scone. In 2017 the Taylors paid $12,500 for Palgrove Panache M44E and showed her with fair success before she had Quintrex, a son of Wells Mr Just-In 3861. Mr Taylor said it was a great thrill to win. “We had some Charolais back in the 90s and we got out of them because of work commitments and we have just started up with this heifer four years ago,” he said. Quintrex weighed 800kgs at 20 months for a daily weight gain of 1.27kg/day.

Familiar faces at a Sydney Royal Charolais judging, Bill Dunlop, David and Prue Bondfield catch up with RAS of NSW Chairman Michael Millner. More than just a bit of Australian Charolais history in this group.

Myona chalked up another broad ribbon success with Myona Platinum P22 (P)(R/F) weighing in at 998kg taking the reserve senior championship. For the Supreme Charolais exhibit Ms Powe choose Tractor Nellie informing the crowd “ the cow has the longevity, structural correctness and ability to get out and move, she is really set up well on her feet and legs, she moves out with a little more freedom than the bull”.

Gold In The Gascoyne

Charolais sired composite sire working on Minnie Creek Station in the Gascoyne, WA

Reproduced with Courtesy Tamara Hooper, Farm Weekly, Images courtesy Ryan Family. COMMERCIAL production is the core focus for Central Stockcare’s cattle breeding operation and the Ryan family has been fine tuning their genetics to create the most viable beef from paddock to plate. Dean Ryan, wife Katie and daughters Tatum, 13, Zara, 12, and Faith, 8, are all involved in the production of beef through their Central Stockcare business. There is a definitive sense of future proofing and a real sense of pride in the achievements the family have made thus far in their journey. However, Central Stockcare is not your run of the mill family farming enterprise, spanning both the pastoral and agricultural regions of WA and the production of their own trademark line of cattle. For Dean the choice of Charolais bulls was a personal preference and the smart choice for their requirements. “Being in the industry I shopped around to find some stud level, commercial Santa Gertrudis and Droughtmaster cows to mate to red factor Charolais bulls,” Dean said. “This creates a composite for our station, which was a predominantly Droughtmaster herd, that we had initially bought a lot of Droughtmaster bulls for. “The station cattle are backgrounded at our two Badgingarra properties, Sendem Downs and Hallswood Park. “These have been set up for perennials and we have quite a large water license and centre pivot irrigation to be able to background the station cattle and drought proof ourselves.” The 196,000 hectare Minnie Creek station is situated on the banks of the West Lyons River in the Upper Gascoyne region, 300 kilometres north east of Carnarvon. 36

July 2021 Charolais Magazine

The station carries the Ryan’s 3000 strong breeder herd, including their replacement heifers, and they bring down 2000 of their own cattle to background and sell each year. Dean said they also had a smaller breeding herd of about 200 head of Santa Gertrudis and Droughtmaster cows they ran in Badgingarra in conjunction with the backgrounding, crossing these to Charolais bulls and producing their own composite bulls. The Santa Gertrudis-Droughtmaster-Charolais cross progeny, produced at Sendem Downs were nicknamed Gascoyne Golds by Dean. “These were performing so well in the feedlot we named them Gascoyne Golds,” he said. “We have since trademarked the name Gascoyne Gold Beef,” he said. “It is a plan for the future, when we might not have our own branding, but can partner up with a supermarket brand, and tell our family story.” Although the Gascoyne Gold Beef brand is a plan for the future, the crossbred cattle are currently being produced by the Ryans with great success. The reasoning behind this breed mix was simply to produce a commercially viable animal that appealed to the market and could thrive in the tough conditions of the Gascoyne region. “Hump height is an issue for Meat Standards Australia grading and we also wanted to get more cattle suitable to the supermarket trade,” Dean said. “We felt we would be able to get more of our cattle into the supermarket trade by infusing the Charolais genetics into the breed mix. “We also didn’t want hairy cattle, they aren’t suited to the dry conditions of the station.

they are very quiet, have excellent growth rates and meat qualities and benefit us commercially.

“We started utilising the Charolais genetics more than 15 years ago. “They have the lighter red gold colouring, strong hybrid vigour and higher growth rates. “To me the Charolais is the ultimate cross for breeding, they are very quiet, have excellent growth rates and meat qualities and benefit us commercially.” All the cattle they bring down from Minnie Creek station are backgrounded in Badgingarra. “We background everything, including the cull cows and bulls,” Dean said. Situated in Badgingarra, Sendem Downs, is 3035ha and Hallswood Park is 1410ha, both are used for the backgrounding of pastoral cattle. Central Stockcare grows approximately 250ha of oats, lupins and wheat crops on Sendem Downs and Hallswood Park was purchased as an add-on to Sendem Downs in 2020, as additional backgrounding and cropping area. It will be developed with further perennial pastures for cattle backgrounding on weaker soil and heavier soil types used for crops of wheat and oats. “The cattle brought down for backgrounding are broken down into 50 kilogram increments,” Dean said. “They are put into different paddocks according to their weights. “The Charolais cross average around 250kg dressed, with milk teeth at 12 months of age. “This is very seasonal too, like this year has been an extremely dry year. “We did three musters this year to take the pressure off the mothers at Minnie Creek.” Echuca is the family’s 42ha home property located near Bullsbrook. Echuca is CSC’s breeding headquarters for the pastoral Charolais-Droughtmaster composite bulls breeding operation. According to Dean their breeding program is kept very simple without the use of artificial insemination or embryo transfer at present. “What we are doing is not very scientific, we have a very commercial focus,” he said. “I am a very commercially minded person and have no interest in competing with the stud guys, we are breeding for our own purposes and we still buy Santa Gertrudis and some Droughtmaster bulls also. “We need this to maintain the number of females for our self-replacing herd, that have the Bos Indicus content to handle the environment.” He said longer term they would continue to breed the red factor Charolais-Droughtmaster cross and Santa Gertrudis, to have their Gascoyne Gold bulls and move in that direction more and more. “The Charolais cross Gascoyne Golds for us have the lower hump height, the higher growth rates and hybrid vigour,” Dean said. “It keeps the red gold colour, as I like consistent colour in the cattle, I don’t want every colour under the rainbow. cont page 38....

Gascoyne Gold steer with Charolais heritage in the feeedlot. The Ryans have trademarked their Gascoyne Gold Beef for the future and say the Charolais cross breed is ideal for their beef production purposes. The cattle are docile, have good growth rates and suitability for the supermarket trade.

“Also the Charolais cross cattle are very docile and 100pc poll, we really want poll cattle, we don’t have any horn cattle on the station, it is our aim to breed totally poll cattle long term. “To add to this their performance in the feedlot is excellent.” He said they had not done this for any other purpose than for their own internal use and were very strict with their selection of their own bred bulls. “We only selected 12 bulls from 60 bred last year,” Dean said. “This year we only selected six, because we are so strict on the selection traits. “To be honest this is done mostly visual appraisal. “We do semen and morphology test the bulls as yearlings and send them up to be put in a paddock of about 4000 acres just for bulls, for six to 12 months to acclimatise, then they go out with the breeding herd.” When it comes to their stud bull selection it is a very different story, with Dean saying he attends the sale with the intention of buying the top Charolais bull, which usually happens to be the most expensive and sought after animal. “We bought one particularly good bull at a sale two years ago, called Major General,” Dean said. “He is exceptional and I haven’t seen one like him since, we are lucky we got him and he is a good foundation for us.” The bull Dean referred to was Liberty Major General M38 (P) (AI) (R/F), which at purchase in February 2018, weighed 1040kg and its EBVs were in the top one per cent of the breed for 200, 400 and 600-day weights (+25, +62 and +71) plus carcase weight (+45), top 5pc IMF (+0.9) and top 10pc milk (+12). Its scan data showed numbers of 9mm for P8 and rib fat, 136cm2 EMA and 4.9 IMF, bred by Liberty Charolais stud, Toodyay. It is no wonder then that Liberty Major General has been a valuable base for the further development of the Ryan’s Gascoyne Gold commercial breeding herd. The future looks bright for the Ryan family and their Central Stockcare beef operation, with the future generation keen to learn more about cattle breeding to continue the family legacy well into the future. 38

Charolais Office Moves

Shop 6 / 188 Beardy Street, Armidale, (2005-2021)

Technology Park, Armidale, (1991-2005)

July 2021 Charolais Magazine

The office of the Charolais Society of Australia was based in Sydney for many years. As a start up company the society worked from rented offices in the beginning. Eventually an office was purchased in North Sydney with support from members providing finance on a loan basis. The last office space occupied in Sydney was on Bay Road, Waverton in 1989. With the society moving to computer systems built by ABRI in Armidale the Charolais Society along with many other breed offices looked to move closer to ABRI. In those days data transfer speeds were slow using the telephone lines. In 1989 the decision was made to leave the Waverton premises on the North Shore and relocate the office to Armidale. At the time, President Trevor Cottee stated, “we intend to establish a strong Charolais identity in Armidale, preferably on a highway location”. Registrar Teresa Foran relocated to join newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Terry Skuthorpe. The Society operated out of rented offices at ABRI for the initial period prior to purchasing Suites 3&4 at Armidale’s Technology Park. In 2005 an offer was made by the major tenant at this location to purchase the office space and this was accepted by the Council. The funds from the sale of the office were reinvested into office space in Sydney for a time. This smaller office was rented out for several years generating income for the society. The office moved to Suite 6, 188 Beardy Street in the Armidale Central Business District on the 5th April 2005. This suite comprised 2 offices and a main open space room with a storage unit across the corridor. At the time there were four full time employees. Rent expenses were offset by investment return and the economics were in favour of the location.

The intention of the Board was this would be a temporary situation until a suitable office was available for outright purchase. This location was not perfect being tucked away in an arcade with no street frontage and limitations for close parking. Over the years opportunities have been evaluated with limited success. Introduction of stricter zoning regulations in New South Wales in 2012 limited properties available for use. Fast forward sixteen years and that opportunity has arisen and been acted on. A location in prime space in the Armidale CBD became available and negotiations saw the Society purchase 6 /108 Dangar Street in mid-April. This followed the Board evaluating several other options and taking into account, low investment return, increased rental costs and a requirement for less space due to electronic operations. Working through the Covid pandemic highlighted large office space is less essential than in the past. During this period, two of the three Charolais team members worked from home and maintained a high level of service. Zoom and other technology allows staff to work externally however a physical space is still required. With the nature and scope of breed society work there are advantages in an office environment. Purchasing our own building adds an extra layer of financial security to the business and over an extended occupancy, potential for capital gain. As they say in real estate, Location, Location, Location and our new office is prime location in Armidale. The office required cosmetic updates and cabling for our network systems. These should be completed and the relocation should be complete by the end of June 2021.

Animals running under different conditions? The process by which BREEDPLAN compares animals running in different herds and in different environments can be broken down into two main steps : (i) Firstly, the performance recorded for an animal is directly compared with the performance of other animals that have had an equal opportunity to perform (ie. animals within their contemporary group). (ii) Secondly, BREEDPLAN uses “genetic linkage” to compare animals across the different contemporary groups both within the herd, across herds & across countries.

Comparison within Contemporary Groups BREEDPLAN analyses cattle in contemporary groups to take out the influence of as many of the non-genetic effects as possible (eg. feeding, years, seasons). The underlying principle is that only animals that have had an equal opportunity to perform are directly compared together within each contemporary group. BREEDPLAN automatically creates the contemporary groups of animals for comparison based on criteria similar to that outlined below. The exact criteria used will differ depending on the trait being analysed. The following section provides more detail regarding each of these criteria.

1. Herd

Only calves bred and weighed in the same herd will be directly compared in the same contemporary group. This herd definition can be extended to include “associated herds” which have calves bred and managed as part of a larger herd. The most common example is where members of a family (eg. children) have a small number of animals registered in their own name that run as part of the main herd on the property.

2. Calving Year

However, for herds whose calving period runs into the next calendar year (eg. from November through to March), “calving year” can be specified to span the period running across two different calendar years. This may be applicable to herds in northern Australia that calve over the summer months. In these cases, a financial year is more appropriately used as the “calving year”.

3. Sex of Calf

Only calves of the same sex at measurement will be directly compared in the same contemporary group (ie. bulls with bulls, heifers with heifers, steers with steers). Note that males that are weighed initially as bulls and then castrated will have their first weight compared with all the other males and their second weight only with the steers.

4. Number in Birth (Singles/Twins)

Only calves of the same birth number will be compared together in the same contemporary group. In other words, single calves will not be compared with twins. While twins can potentially be compared with other twins, the low occurrence of twin births generally means that very little performance information from twins is used in the BREEDPLAN analysis.

5. Birth Status (ET/Natural)

Calves conceived naturally or by AI will be directly compared together in the same contemporary group but they will not be compared with embryo transfer (ET) calves. In other words, ET calves will be analysed in a separate contemporary group. Furthermore, the amount of information available on the recipient dam will then determine the formation of the contemporary group for ET calves. More specifically, in most BREEDPLAN analyses, ET calves will only be directly compared with other ET calves that have been reared by recipient dams of the same breed (and the recipient dam information has been recorded with the Breed Society/Association).

Only animals born in the same “calving year” will be compared together in the same contemporary group. Usually the calving year is the same as the year of birth of the calf.

How Does BREEDPLAN Compare

How Does BREEDPLAN Compare? ...cont from page 45

6. Dam Age (Parity)

The birth performance records for calves out of first calf heifers (up to 3.5 years of age) are not compared with birth performance records for calves out of other cows. NOTE - This heifer/cow distinction is only used for performance traits that are measured up to and including birth (ie. birth weight, gestation length, days to calving).

7. Breed

In some BREEDPLAN analyses, only the performance records for calves of the same breed will be compared together in the same contemporary group. NOTE - The breed of an animal is only used in the formation of contemporary groups in some BREEDPLAN analyses. In other BREEDPLAN analyses, either a) only the performance for pure bred animals is included or b) the performance from cross bred animals is included in the same contemporary group and adjustments for heterosis are made.

8. Measurement Date

Only animals measured on the same date will be compared together in the same contemporary group. In addition, only animals with the same measurement history will be directly compared. For example, the 400 day weight performance for two animals will only potentially be directly compared if: - both the 400 day weights were recorded on the same day - any weights previously submitted to BREEDPLAN for these animals (eg.200 day weights) had also been recorded on the same day.

9. Calf Age

Only animals of similar age will be directly compared in the same contemporary group. When all the other criteria have been used to place animals into a contemporary group, the group is divided (sliced) into animals of similar ages. “Slicing” is done to ensure that the calves being compared have been run under comparable seasonal conditions. For example, if the age slicing for 200 day weight is 45 days. The first calf born in the group is the start and the contemporary group will include all animals born in the next 45 days. After this the next calf is found and this becomes the start of the next contemporary group. NOTE – This age slicing varies depending on the trait being analysed. In addition, the age slices used may vary from breed to breed. The following table provides an indication of the standard age slices used by BREEDPLAN.

10. Breeder Defined Management Groups

Only animals in the same breeder defined “management group” will be directly compared in the same contemporary group. There are two different forms of breeder defined management group. a) the “Birth Management Group” allows breeders to describe different treatments of the cows prior to the birth of the calf. For example, where one group of cows have had different feed availability that may affect the birth weight and/or calving ease and/or gestation length when the calf is born.

b) the “Post Birth Management Group” allows breeders to identify animals that have received different treatment or management following birth that has influenced their performance. This treatment may be deliberate (eg when some of your young bulls receive supplementary feeding and others do not) or accidental Table 2: Standard Age Slicing and Ages for BREEDPLAN Traits (eg if a calf is sick).

Providing BREEDPLAN with management group information is the responsibility of the breeder. By assigning animals into management groups, breeders are acting as “eyes” for the BREEDPLAN evaluation.

Comparison between Contemporary Groups

Once BREEDPLAN has formed contemporary groups of similar animals, each contemporary group is then compared through the use of “genetic linkage”. Genetic linkage can generally be described as “common animals”. That is, for BREEDPLAN to compare animals from different environments, herds must have some performance recorded progeny from common animals (typically common sires) so that the performance recorded animals in each herd are genetically related. As an example of genetic linkage, please consider a situation where 3 different contemporary groups of calves (either on the same property or different properties) are compared. There are environmental differences between the Groups - Contemporary Group 1 (CG1) has relatively poor nutrition, Contemporary Group 3 (CG3) average and Contemporary Group 2 (CG2) relatively good. The figure below reflects the relative average performance of progeny in each of these contemporary groups. Ave Prog. Weight (400 day) 400kg

When compared to the link sire Admiral, Nifty tested in Contemporary Group 1 is superior to Lusty from Group 2. Curly from Group 3 has the highest average 400 day weight performance. These differences are represented in the following table. Direct Comparision

Indirect Comparision

Nifty vs Admiral = +10kg

Lusty vs Admiral = -10kg

Nifty vs Curly (+10kg -20kg) = -10kg

The progeny of the link sire (Admiral) have average adjusted 400-Day weights of 290 kg, 390 kg and 300 kg in their respective contemporary groups. In comparison, the average adjusted 400-Day weights of the progeny of the other sires are: Nifty: 300 kg, Lusty: 380 kg and Curly: 320 kg. Under such conditions, it is impossible to make valid comparisons about the relative performance of the animals in the different contemporary groups, as there are no “links” between the groups and the groups have been running under different conditions. If however, progeny from a common link sire existed in each contemporary group (for example, an AI sire) then it becomes possible to compare the progeny of the different sires represented in each group. This is illustrated in the figure below where Admiral is the link (or common) sire.

Assuming large progeny numbers (100+) for each sire, the sire EBVs will approach twice the progeny differences. This is because the progeny only receive half of their genes from their respective sires. The other half of their genes comes from the dam. In accordance with this, the resultant EBVs of these sires (twice the progeny differences) will be :

The above EBVs assume that Admiral has a base 0 EBV, that reasonable numbers of progeny were measured and that the cows are of equal performance. Adjustments are made if cows are known to differ in BREEDPLAN. In addition, if the progeny numbers are not large, the sire EBVs will be less than double the progeny differences, as BREEDPLAN makes “conservative predictions”. The “scaling factor” depends on the number of progeny of home sire and link sire and the heritability of the trait in question. ARCBA Stats 2020 The Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association [ARCBA] recently released their registration reports for 2020. Overall there has been a sharp rise in seedstock cattle registrations across Australia over the past 12 months.Driven by a return to more favourable seasonal conditions and the start of herd rebuilding after drought – as well as the confidence-driven commercial cattle market – seedstock registrations recorded by ARCBA for the 2020 year rose by more than 5pc to 145,806 head. Following similar patterns seen earlier, British breeds and their derivatives accounted for 74,600 registrations or more than 51pc of total. Tropical breeds represented 22.4pc of registrations last year (32,700 head); European breeds and other derivatives 13.5pc (19,700 head); and ‘Other’ breeds (mostly Wagyu and Speckle Park), 12.9pc or 18,790 head. The ARCBA records covered 37 breed societies, although some breeds are represented by more than one organisation. Data is collected on both primary and secondary registrations. In the European sector, Charolais dominated the sector with 40% of primary European registrations. In total Charolais recorded 8,462 primary and secondary registrations or 4.08% of the registered sector total. This data places the Charolais breed 6th overall in the industry based on registration data.
