ABOUT BEST BUDDIES

Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Best Buddies Champion of the Year is a fundraising competition between local community leaders. Through raising funds and awareness for Best Buddies, our Champions will generate countless opportunities for friendships, jobs, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the campaign’s conclusion, we come together at a gala to celebrate the Champions' accomplishments, honor their collective impact, and name the grand Champion of the Year!

The IDD community that Best Buddies serves includes, but is not limited to, people with Down syndrome, autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury and other undiagnosed disabilities.

Since then, we've built a strong friendship and I've loved sharing this Champion of the Year journey with him by my side. Together, we've had the opportunity to raise awareness for a mission we both care deeply about while celebrating the power of friendship, inclusion, and connection.” - Meseker

TAYLOR HYE, ERICA HADLEY, & JUSTIN SAN JUAN

“Erica and I first met through SDSU Best Buddies. Through our years of involvement with the program, we've seen firsthand how meaningful relationships can build confidence, create opportunities, and change lives. Having Justin as our Mission Partner throughout this journey has made this campaign even more special, reminding us every day why creating a more inclusive community matters.” Taylor

CHARLIE KARSTROM & MIKE CLOW

“My connection to this cause began with my Aunt Brent, whose life and experiences shaped my understanding of disability from an early age. Years later, that lesson came full circle through my friendship with Mike. As part of the Citizens program, we've shared experiences, plenty of laughs, and a genuine connection. Being part of this campaign together is an opportunity to help create more opportunities for friendship and inclusion.” - Charlie

Letter from the Board Chair It is an incredible honor to welcome you to the 2026 Best Buddies Champion of the Year Gala. Tonight, my heart is filled with gratitude as we celebrate the impact we are making together throughout San Diego. Your generosity, enthusiasm, and belief in our mission make it possible for Best Buddies to create more inclusive opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). For me, the Best Buddies mission is deeply personal. I have seen its impact firsthand through my daughter, Kylie, whose friendships through her Best Buddies chapter have brought so much joy and meaning to her life. Her experiences have shown me just how powerful genuine friendship and connection can be. I am incredibly proud to support this mission and help create a community where people of all abilities are welcomed, valued, and given opportunities to thrive. Here in San Diego, that impact continues to grow. Through our Jobs program, Best Buddies helps individuals with IDD pursue meaningful employment, build professional skills, and work toward greater independence and fulfillment in their careers. We currently serve 10 Jobs program participants and made four job placements this year! Our Friendship program now reaches over 700 students across San Diego County, creating opportunities for students with and without IDD to form meaningful one-toone friendships, participate in inclusive activities, and build more welcoming school communities. Through our Citizens program, adults with and without IDD are also forming lasting one-to-one friendships that extend inclusion and connection well beyond the classroom. Tonight would not be possible without the incredible people who bring this mission to life. Thank you to my fellow advisory board members and the dedicated Best Buddies staff for all you have done to make this evening possible. To our Champions, Mission Partners, and Campaign Managers, thank you for giving your time, energy, and hearts to this campaign. Your commitment has helped raise critical funds and awareness while inspiring others throughout our community to join the movement for inclusion. Together, we are creating a San Diego where friendship, opportunity, and belonging are available to everyone. Thank you for celebrating with us tonight and for helping us build a more inclusive future. In Friendship,
