The summer holidays can fill parents with joy but also dread. What to do with the children to keep them entertained?

Getting children outside and into the garden can be tricky when there are computer games to be played and things to watch on screens. But we can and should encourage them out; spending time outside gives them learning opportunities that cannot be simulated and is great for physical and mental wellbeing.

Perhaps your garden has a neglected corner that can be given over to the children to build a den from old wood recycled at home or foraged on a walk.

Imaginations can then run wild; is it a little house in the woods, a soldier’s bunker or a fort?

If it isn’t too shady, the area could be turned into an area to have them grow something. You could pick up some half price bedding plants from your local nursery, cut them back, a bitof food and water and

‘watch the flowers grow’.

Alternatively, sows ome biennials for next spring, to get the full wonderment at seeing a whole plant grow from a tiny seed.

Planting butterfly attracting flowers like Monarda (bergamot) Verbena bonariensis and Sedum spectabile will bring all the colourful butterflies and moths in.

See how many different ones they can spot, and do a count of all the species. If you have a pond, do dips and see how the mix of creepy crawlies changes over the summer. One of my favourite garden projects as a child was growing on a Silver birch sapling; it grew quickly and was so rewarding to see it go from a few inches to feet to metres tall.
