Gardening through lockdown

The pandemic has encouraged many of us to garden for the very first time with our ambition to produce food as well as using the garden to provide a stimulus for our well-being and mental health, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.

It may be July but there is still plenty of time for growing plants this season whether for eating, decoration or simply to enjoy. With more time on our

hands, giving our children opportunities to grow things such as a few Radish, Lettuce or Sunflower, an activity we have seen on our TV screens and over social media in recent weeks. I do feel we are seeing a new generation of gardeners in the making, they having had the luxury of time to spare, together with the simply stunning late spring weather and the enthusiasm to give growing a go! This is great news and something we need to embrace and actively encourage for the future.

ADD COLOUR As plants were in short supply through lockdown, many of you have been growing your seasonal bedding plants from seed – Marigolds, Petunias, Sunflowers and Busy Lizzies being some of the most popular. Since we re-opened in mid-May Pelargoniums (Zonal Geraniums), Fuchsias and Begonias have been in strong demand together with Chrysanthemums, Dianthus, Dahlias and Osteospermums. If you have been enjoying these and othersummer bedding plants these will all benefit from regular feeding now and through the growing season. The old favourite - Tomato food - is best applied every 7-10 days and will encourage plenty of blooms (and fruits!) as well as keeping your plants healthy.

SMALL SPACES? If you’re not lucky enough to have a patch of greenery outside, then there are plenty of options that you can successfully grow on windowsills and balconies. Opt for compact hardy plants that suit limited spaces some possibilities being Heuchera, Creeping Jenny, Garden Pinks, herbs including Rosemary and Thyme and hardy succulents such as Sempervivums. A generous sized pot is perfect for Tomatoes, Chillies and Strawberries or if you wanted to grow salad vegetables. If you would like to grow a Tomato in a hanging basket then look out for the varieties ‘Totem’ (pictured) and ‘Red Alert’, both are heavy-yielding bush types which need no pruning and thrive in baskets as long as well fed and watered.

RELAXATION TIME We know many of our customers (and staff) have been not only been enjoying their gardens just as a place to potter and grow plants but also as somewhere to escape to relax. I cannot remember enjoying so many al fresco meals in early summer. Just a reminder that if you are thinking about changing or upgrading your garden furniture (sets, relaxers, parasols etc), BBQs together with other garden accessories, do let us know as we have a great selection for you to choose from.

PROJECTS If you are planning a new bed or border, don’t panic as it is worth remembering that most plants can be planted out throughout the summer so delay due to lockdown is not necessarily limiting, just delaying. I think we have all had to become a little more patient in our quest on sourcing our plants, compost and materials, a few weeks delay isn’t the end of world in the scheme of things. We and our gardens can wait!

PROPAGATION TIME July is a perfect opportunity to root a wide range of plants and good subjects you can take softwood cuttings from include Pelargoniums (Zonal Geraniums), Fuchsias, Garden Pinks, Lavender, Rosemary and Hydrangeas. The process is straightforward: take summer cuttings by snipping 5 - 10cm (2 - 4in) of new growth from the tip of your plants but make sure it is non-flowering and is healthy. The large leaves of Hydrangeas can be trimmed back by half to reduce evaporation of water and to help the rooting process (pictured). Remove the bottom few leaves off each cutting and push the stem into a pot of compost. Most cuttings root better if the cut end is dipped in hormone rooting liquid or powder. Fill a 11cm terracotta

pot with a free-draining compost. I like to use a mix of 80 per cent multi-purpose compost and 20 per cent horticultural/potting grit. Tap the pot level and gently firm. Water well and allow to drain. To stop the cuttings from drying out put in a propagator or cover the pot with a clear plastic bag, held in place with an elastic band. Remove the bag and turn inside out each morning to remove excess condensation. Put in a light place until rooted. Check by looking for roots growing through the holes at the base of the pot, or by gently tugging at the plants after about three weeks. If there’s resistance, they may have rooted. Pot each rooted cutting individually and plant out when they have filled their new pot with roots. When plants are about 15cm (6in) tall pinch out the tips to encourage new branches to grow.

leaves can dry off a bit before the hot sun hits them or water from the base so the leaves do not get wet. Evening watering is sometimes acceptable if the temperatures are warm enough to ensure that foliage dries before the temperature drops at night. Change the water in your bird bath regularly, and keep it filled and scrubbed regularly to keep it clean.

Standing water may become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae but if practical fish will love to feed on these. Feed flowering shrubs like Rhododendrons and Azaleas as well as Camellias immediately after they have finished flowering, or a little later if you missed the optimum time, with an Ericaceous fertiliser. When watering or feeding use rainwater rather than tap water where possible.

Sweet peas may tend to fizzle out with the hot summer weather, but with heavy mulching to keep the roots cool and moist you can prolong the flowering season by a few more weeks.

Regular cutting for the house will help encourage further blooms too!
