Summer weekends – the perfect setting for cool cider in the sun, beer at the barbecue, Pimm’s at garden parties – but if your liver is already feeling the strain, we may have the solution! This month, our Aussie friends are busy improving their health whilst raising money for cancer sufferers with Dry July – giving up the booze and getting sponsored for a very good cause, so why not join in with an effort of your own? The benefits of going alcohol-free can be wonderful – clearer skin, more energy and better concentration, no hangovers, weight loss and it’s cheaper, too – so if you can give it up completely and benefit a charity at the same time, it’s a win / win situation! The downside – if you drink to relax and unwind after a stressful day, as well as socially, you will need to find a substitute. Exercise has been proven to release ‘feel good chemicals’ within your body, so can de-stress and make you feel great after a long day, whether it’s at the office or juggling school runs and mountains of laundry – so why not try going for a run or swim, and see how you feel? If you like a drink after work every evening, what’s the best way to ‘go dry’? Giving up anything you have every day is best done slowly, so why not try reducing to drinking just one night in the week, and at the weekend, and then slowly cut drinking out completely. Buy in plenty of diet drinks, so you’re not replacing alcohol with sugar, and have a glass of fruit juice, squash or a fizzy drink – or just plain water – when you would usually open a bottle, so you don’t feel as though you’re missing something! Put the spare change you would have spent on booze, in a charity tin instead, and get friends to add a quid or two, instead of buying you the usual pint or G’n’T in the pub – and soon both you and your chosen charity will feel the benefits.

Wildlife in July
We all love the summer – and a heatwave would be lovely, but whilst we’re enjoying a cold drink or ice cream to cool off, think about the wildlife in your garden, and how they’re coping with prolonged hot weather. At the lower end of the food chain, insects need plants to be thriving and flowering, in order to obtain food – so having a rainwater barrel attached to your guttering downspout, to collect water which would otherwise go down the drain, can enable you to water your plants free of charge, and keep the garden looking lovely as well as looking after the smallest creatures. Amphibians, such as toads, will look for anywhere cooler and damp in the heat of the day, so large stones with spaces for them to crawl underneath are perfect. Birds now have fully fledged young, which means many more mouths to feed – and whilst nature is fabulous at supplying seeds and insects in the summer months, it’s still important to keep the bird feeders topped up and make sure there’s fresh water available – some to drink, and a shallow pan out of the reach of cats, for them to bathe in – it’s great fun to watch!

BUCKINGHAM ROTARY Saturday 1st July 2017 Buckingham Rotary Clu fourth Classic Car Meet Buckingham Rotary Club is organising this event to raise funds for local and international charities. The local charities include; Buckingham & Winslow Young Carers, Buckingham Youth Club and the Citizens’Advice Bureau. Just like watching snooker, monochrome isn’t the best way to appreciate the colour and spectacle of garden plants nor the game for that matter! We had to wait until the late 1960s for colour TVs and suddenly gardening became gloriously complete! However, the way we purchased our plants was at the same time undergoing a massive revolution as garden centres begin to open their doors as Percy greeted his new, keen audience on the TV screen. Prior to garden centres, it was ‘nurseries’ who sold their plants through the dormant season as bare-rooted trees, hedging and shrubs. The arrival of the garden centre and containerization of trees, shrubs, roses and perennials changed things dramatically and this allowed gardeners to plant all

austerity and domestic garden design was still in its infancy. Vegetables were widely grown while colour and vibrancy was the preserve of bedding plants – traditional red (Pelargoniums), white (Alyssum) and blue (Lobelia). Patios and paved areas were built from materials to hand and the ever-present small lawn would fill the gaps. Roses were popular, they were one of the hobbyist plants of the time and thank goodness 50 years on they remain ever popular. During the 1970's changes were afoot. Hard landscaping was available at the burgeoning range of garden centres, including Buckingham Garden Centre which opened in 1970. Planting became more sophisticated while fashion raised its head and many a garden sported a collection of heathers and conifers. We have to thank the Blooms family in Diss, Norfolk for promoting the year-round garden. I remember buying heathers and conifers with my parents and creating my own island bed in the lawn, something we ‘copied’ from the TV! Sweeping borders and geometric shapes became order of the day and new plants started to capture the imagination of the public. The 1970s was also the decade houseplants became a reality – Mother in Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria), Money plant (Crassula ovata), African Violets (Saintpaulia), Rubber plants (Ficus robusta) and Swiss cheese plants (Monstera deliciosa, below), they all made their mark and continue to do so to the present day. The 'Outdoor Room' came into its own in the 1980's but it was also the decade of pizzazz, money and boom times. Home owners, including some I’m sure with shoulder pads and permed hair, wanted a place to enjoy with barbecues, sitting areas and easy to tend planting. The lawn often disappeared replaced by paving in defined patterns; 21
design had become central to a new garden and this was very much reflected in the press and television at the time. If you want to see one of the best ‘Outdoor Room' then make a date to visit Hidcote Manor in Gloucestershire. This garden, created by Lawrence Johnston in 1905, gives you the best perspective on doing just that, defining spaces with style and plants! The popular plants of the 80s were Potentilla ‘Red Ace’, Ballerina apple trees and the bright yellow foliage tree Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’. As time passed throughout the 1990's there was a greater awareness in the environment and the wild

flower meadow was popularised. The birth of the TV 'makeover' saw decking and gravel take centre stage and gardens were softer in style as well as being easy to maintain. No doubt Gardeners’ World enjoyed the extra exposure of a new audience watching the likes of Ground Force. However, we soon tired of the 48-hour makeover despite garden centres and DIY stores’ booming sales of Barley Wood paint, water features, palms and bamboo screening. A new gardener was created through the 1990s and I know they were keen to develop their skills and learn more about the new gardens they had created. Black bamboo, Olive trees, lion head water features and outdoor lighting (mains only) made major contributions that decade

to our garden landscapes. During the 2000's the 'Outdoor Room' is being taken to new levels. New and elegant materials are readily available while growing vegetables returns to the fore using raised beds and veggie trugs. Gardening has also become grounded and we are more environmentally aware through social media. Gardeners now do more to encourage our beleaguered bee populations than the rest of UK agriculture put together, so education and awareness has become paramount. This has aided schools to add growing plants onto the national curriculum and we know how vital it is that our children are aware of the benefits of plants and where food comes from. Finally, we’ve seen a shift to solar lighting technology and this is the popular choice for our garden rooms and gardens. Traditional BBQs are making way for more emotive and rustic designs and materials such as the Kadai Firebowls, which brings Rajasthan craftsmanship of using simple recycled oil drums. This beautiful structure; a focal point and a practical BBQ has instantly redefined our outdoor space. Back in the garden planting styles we now embrace hardy perennials and grasses together with fruit trained on walls and fences, harking back to gardens 100 years ago, the wheel has almost turned the full circle!

Summer Musica Into The Woods by
Could you help a child to read? ARCh (Assisted Reading for Children) is a local registered charity which operates in Brackley primary schools to help children who are struggling with reading. Could you help a child and change their life forever? All it takes is one and a half hours twice a week during the school day as an ARCh volunteer in a primary school near you! You don’t need any qualifications, just patience, enthusiasm and kindness. We have schools waiting for volunteers. Full training is given and we provide ongoing support and reimburse travel expenses.
