H ave yo u u p d a t e d yo u r w i l l l a t e ly ? Good! You have set up a will to safeguard your loved ones, but even after you’ve signed your name, life events and circumstances will continue to change around you. As a rule of thumb, many solicitors advise that wills should be reviewed and updated every three to five years to remain relevant. When should I update my will? There have been changes to family members and relationships Births, deaths, marriages and divorces should trigger a need to update a will. Always ensure that the correct people are named on your most current will and people whom you no longer want to include in your will are taken off. Updating your will is especially important if you are remarrying as your previous will is automatically invalidated. You’ve bought a home or business Buying a home or business adds to your asset

portfolio, which is included in your estate upon your death. Having a will in place that states how these assets are to be distributed can help with effective tax planning. There have been changes to tax laws From time to time, new tax and probate laws are brought in by governing bodies. It is good practice to check if any of these new laws affect your estate and management thereof. Additionally, if you move to a new country, certain laws can impact differently. For more information about creating a will or updating an existing will, please contact Emma Rolfe, Solicitor at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01869 222315 or email erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

Gorgeous gifts to delight your date! I love February, it’s a really uplifting month after those dreary January blues! The first Spring bulbs start pushing through cold wintry soil, buds appear on bare-branched trees and even garden birds seem to be feeling Cupid’s influence, preening and displaying to impress a mate. Yes, the most romantic day of the year is almost upon us, bringing with it the perfect opportunity to tell that special someone exactly how you feel. Choosing the perfect present is a lovely way to let your Valentine know just how much they mean to you, whether you’ve been together for 6 months or 60 years. Maybe an expensive treat, something special you know they’ll love or a silly token that reflects a private joke – the most important thing is the time and thought that goes into the choosing. With Valentine’s Day falling on a Friday this year, it’s the perfect

opportunity to treat your loved one to a night out, an amazing candlelit dinner or a cinema trip. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, vouchers for a spa day or a driving experience, a bottle of their favourite fragrance or tickets to a fabulous West End show are always going to be well received. A romantic walk in the countryside followed by a cosy fireside supper would be my absolute favourite, and a heart-shaped box of chocolates or a glorious bunch of red roses are certain to make the right impression. Whatever you choose to give the person you love on Valentine’s Day, with the busy lives we all lead, an evening of your undivided attention and affection is a pretty good gift – one we would all love to receive from our partner!

Valentine’s super stir-fry As a tasty supper to share, this dish is fast and easy to make most of the prep work can be done well ahead and ingredients popped back in the fridge until you’re ready to cook. It can be made with any meat or alternative you prefer – chicken, pork, beef, veggie chunks or just the amazing vegetables! You’ll need: A wok and wooden spatula Salt & black pepper 2 tablespoons Soy sauce 3cm chunk of fresh ginger, finely grated 2 cloves garlic, crushed ½ teaspoon chilli flakes 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or cooking spray for stir-frying Fresh egg noodles 1 pack of beansprouts 1 onion, diced 2 Carrots, thinly sliced lengthways Half each of a red and yellow pepper, chopped 8 button mushrooms, quartered 100g diced beef, chicken, pork or veggie chunks Juice & zest of half a lime 1 tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped Mix the soy sauce, lime zest and half the juice, crushed garlic, chilli flakes and grated ginger, add the chunks of meat or alternative of your choice. Season with salt and pepper, cover and leave in the fridge to marinate for at least an hour – this works really well if you prepare it the night before. Slice the carrots, chop mushrooms, onion and peppers and set aside. Add the oil to the wok and heat, then add the meat (or alternative) and all the marinade and let it sizzle, turning frequently, for 5 minutes. Add the carrots, onion, peppers and mushrooms and cook for another few minutes until starting to soften. Next, add the beansprouts and noodles and stir frequently until completely heated through, then check the seasoning and serve, garnished with a squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkling of fresh coriander. Delicious! 14

Making a fresh start in the garden The changes in seasons are always memorable – for example when the first snowdrops appear and buds begin to show signs of swelling, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.

START chitting your first early potatoes by placing them in a cool, bright but frost-free place. But just a minute, what does ‘chitting’ mean? Chitting is basically another word for sprouting. What you do when you chit your seed potatoes is basically speeding up the developing process of the potato, by exposing it to light and, more importantly, a bit of warmth. This will cause the eyes of the seed potato to start sprouting. The sprouts should be small, knobbly, and green/purple in colour. If you end up with long, white coloured sprouts, it means there’s not enough light, or you’re sprouting potatoes were sold for consumption not for seed. So, why do we chit potatoes? The reason for chitting potatoes is that you start the growing process off before planting your

seed potatoes, so once you do plant them out in the soil, you’ve given them a head start. Hopefully by doing this you will get an earlier harvest and a slightly better crop as well. We have a extensive range of over 50 varieties including First and Second Earlies and Main crop, some pre-packed but mostly loose so you can choose exactly how few or many you want of each variety. To find out more, check our listing on our website at the following link. https://www. hedging.co.uk/acatalog/Index_Seed_Potatoes.html or just pop in to the Garden Centre Shop. To find out more about growing potatoes in containers or in the ground please come along to our Graft and Grow Day on Saturday 1st February between 10am-4pm. We will be welcoming members of the local branch of the National Vegetable Society, so again there will be plenty of top growing advice on hand. Our apple scion wood exchange and grafting demonstrations will feature members of The Mid Shires Orchard Group offering an opportunity to swap scion wood (apple and other top fruit varieties) from far and

wide and get them grafted (for a small charge) or bring your own wood in to get a new tree from a favourite variety. FORCE rhubarb plants by covering the crown with a bucket or maybe an ornate forcing pot. This will produce tender pink stems ready for eating in about eight weeks’ time. Divide and lift old clumps. It is also a good time to establish new rhubarb crowns, so check out the popular three varieties we have available at the Garden Centre ‘Glaskin’s Perpetual’, ‘Red Champagne’ and ‘Timperley Early’. Elsewhere on your veggie plot, pre-warm the soil by covering it with landscape fabric, sheets of black plastic or maybe some carpet underlay you may have lying around, especially if you like to follow the advice from BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time’s Bob Flowerdew! Get this in position several weeks before sowing. Single stretches of soil can be warmed by setting up a polythene tunnel cloche and later the cloche can be used to protect crops when flowering (Strawberries) or by changing the cover to netting it will help to keep the Cabbage White Butterfly caterpillar at bay too!

Take time to check through any vegetables and fruit that were stored in the autumn, such as Carrots, Onions, Shallots, Swedes, Turnips, Potatoes and Apples, because they can easily become infested with pests or become rotten or harbour mould that can spread to the rest of the stored crop. You can also make a start on some early sowings of Peas, Broad Beans, Lettuce and other salad crops under cloches or from March directly in the vegetable garden. The seedsmen

Thompson & Morgan have devised a good way to remind you about the seeds you should be sowing with their ‘Sow Now’ display, which includes flowers as well as vegetable seeds. Look out for this on your next visit! There’s still time to get bare root Strawberries planted, either in rows in well prepared soil, or alternatively you can grow them in large pots filled with a gritty 50:50 mix of John Innes No3 Compost and a Multi-purpose Compost. It is crucial with strawberries to get the planting depth correct (see photo guide), otherwise plants may fail to establish properly. SCREEN out unwanted eyesores and buildings with an ornamental tree or two. Good screening trees which help provide a privacy barrier include Betulas (Birches, pictured), Malus (Crab apples), Sorbus aucuparia (Mountain Ash), and Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) to name just a few. It’s always a good idea to have a chat with the neighbours before planting any tall growing trees or a new hedge line so its amicable from the beginning. Remember to position the trees at least 1m (3ft) away from fence and boundary lines, unless it is to

be espalier or fan trained where it needs to be closer at approximately 30cm from the boundary. You may need to improve the soil well when digging out the planting hole so remember before replacing the soil you have removed to improve it with some well-rotted manure, garden compost or Levington Tree, Shrub & Rose Planting Compost adding a handful of Bonemeal in as well. The tree roots can also be treated with some friendly-fungi RootGrow just prior to planting to give your tree the best possible start. Any plant growing relatively close to a fence potentially will be in a rain shadow, so do mulch around the base of such plants with a generous mulch of compost or composted bark to help retain moisture around the plant’s roots. Do keep the plants regularly watered in the spring and summer – about two gallons of water twice a week per plant is usually sufficient to keep it happy. MUST-DO’S Despite the low temperatures and short daylight hours, there are some useful tasks that can be done.

If the weather is mild, you can still plant roses and bare rooted hedging (pictured red stemmed Dogwoods), shrubs, soft fruit bushes and fruit and ornamental trees. If you have planted any trees or shrubs during the winter months, check that they haven’t been lifted by frost. Regularly check any bulbs or corms that have been stored away for winter and make sure that they are not going rotten or showing signs of mould. Cut off any damaged tubers from dahlias. Ensure they have sufficient protection by covering them with dry compost or straw. NO sooner we are thinking of what seeds to sow then the timely arrival of summer flowering bulbs make their appearance at the Garden Centre. It’s a good idea to start planning your pots and beds and where possible, secure stock before many of the good reliable varieties sell out. This especially applies to Amarine tubergenii Belladiva (pictured and Bulb of the Year 2020), Lilies, Dahlias, Tuberous Begonias and the more choice bulbs such as Crinums, Eucomis, Nerines and Zantedeschia.
