Buckingham Computer Repair & Support

The response to our computer repair & support advertising in Buckingham has been overwhelming and we now have lots of new clients on our books, many of whom have signed up to our monthly, remote support cover. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts on our services: “My home office workstation has served me well over the past 5 years, and I had two choices, buy a new one and transfer the data,

4

or give my PC a new lease of life. I decided to go for the latter (I have a fear transferring data and as a transport conversion engineer I have some very valuable work) and saw PChelp4U in the business services magazine and contacted them. Ben was my sole contact and provided a service, whereby he took away my machine and returned it three days later – absolutely first class. My laptop will be next I suspect. I have no reservations in recommending PChelp4U. Thank you.” Brian Eldridge, Buckingham

“I was very happy with the service you provided. My laptop crashed at a very difficult time (not that there is ever a good time). You responded quickly, kept me updated through your diagnosis, and carried out the necessary rebuild quickly and effectively. You returned my fully restored laptop when you said you would, and I feel that the charge for the work done was very reasonable. I would (and have already) recommended your services.” Kevin Chappenden, Buckingham Read more at www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/testimonials Contact form: www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/buckingham-it-support Landline: 01280 859001 Email: support@pc-help-4u.co.uk

Family focus

Outnumbered? How to stay sane! Is family life getting too exhausting, wintry weather meaning that the kids are spending more time indoors and you’re yearning for someone to wave a magic wand and make your tiny horrors into perfect little poppets? Here are a few ideas to make things run a little more smoothly.

2. Using time out (for an ageappropriate time, in a boring part of the home where they can still be supervised from a distance) and

1. Create a basic timetable for your daily routine and simple house rules, agree these with other caregivers, then explain them to the kids, making the consequences

confiscation (of toys, TV or internet time) works as a reminder that a child has done wrong, but kids must always be given a warning and a chance to ‘do the right thing’ before being sanctioned.

Those parenting bibles say that ‘Consistency, routine and clearly defined boundaries are key’, but how does that work in practise?

of non-compliance clear. All adults must agree to insist on the same rules, in the same way, or it simply won’t work.

3. There must also be clear rewards for a child choosing to behave well - earning points towards a prize, perhaps - but don’t make them monetary or food treats. Your time and attention, a trip to the park and a game of football – all are great motivators for good behaviour. 4. Although it’s tough, try not to reward repeatedly annoying or mildly bad behaviour with constant corrections – that

suggests to your child that they’ll get attention for the wrong reasons. Try to ignore little things if you can, making sure that the moment your child starts to behave well, you praise them for making a good choice. 5. Make sure you treat all the children in your household the same – different ages may need their own little variations on the rules, but the basics are the same – and enjoy the rewards of your efforts; when the kids are comfortable with the rules, they have freedom to enjoy just being a kid, without feeling the need to test boundaries.

One month to the day after Christmas, proud Scots around the world are partying again – to celebrate the birthday of their greatest ever poet, Robbie Burns. Burns’ night means one thing to me – that Marmite of all dishes – Haggis! If you’re not sure what this dish contains, I’d recommend not asking – just have a taste, and then decide! Many varieties are available, including a vegetarian one, and that unique texture and mixture of spices is definitely worth a try. More controversially, is the question of what to serve with your haggis – ‘Neeps and Tatties’ being the recommendation – but what this comprises is a topic for heated debate!

Take a look at my website..

The ‘Tatties’ part is straight forward – parboil and then roast your potatoes, break them down a little and season, to create a lovely flavoursome, buttery dish. The ‘Neeps’ part is a little trickier! If you’re Scots, or from the North of England, you’ll call this a turnip. If you’re Southernbred, we’re talking about a swede. Either way, it’s the orange-fleshed, purple-skinned one, and you’ll need to peel and chop and boil it, then mash with plenty of black pepper and butter. Whether you mix your Neeps with your Tatties or not, is down to personal choice – but enjoy, and raise a glass (of whisky, what else?) to Robbie Burns, Scotland’s finest poet!

Throughout your child’s education, they will be required to write assessments to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the school year. This can be a stressful time. Check out our top 10 tips that you can share with your child to set them up for success.

1. Keep a positive attitude throughout the test and try to stay relaxed. If you start to feel nervous take a few deep breaths. 2. Pace yourself, don’t rush. Read the whole question and pay attention to all the details. 3 Look for key words in every question to help you to understand and answer what is being asked of you. 4 Write neatly. If the marker can’t read what you have written; your answer may be marked as incorrect.

5 Neatly shade ONE bubble when answering the multiple choice questions. Your answer needs to be clear.

6 A process of elimination may be helpful when answering multiple-choice questions. Remember multiple choice questions are about finding the most correct answer. 7 Plan your written responses. Take a few minutes to decide what you are going to write 14

about and write down a few points to keep yourself on track.

8 Give it a try! If you don’t know the answer, don’t worry. Just do your best to answer the question and at the very least, go with the answer that seems correct.

9 9. Review. If you have time left when you have finished the assessment, look over it and make sure you haven’t missed any questions. If you have time, redo the questions and check you have indicated the correct answers.

10 Don’t worry if other students finish before you. Focus on what you are doing and what is in front of you.

Pets Corner Animals around us – Time to Hibernate!

As the days grow shorter, the weather becomes chillier and it’s harder than ever to muster the urge to get up at an unearthly hour each morning, I must admit I’ve often contemplated hibernating! I’m sure that hanging out for a few months, not straying far from my cosy bed, would be a much nicer solution to getting through the harshest time of year. For some animals in the UK, hibernation is a reality; dormice, bats and hedgehogs all fatten up for winter and then sleep somewhere warm and undisturbed, until the days start to lengthen and the temperature rises. Hedgehogs are the creatures we

can help the most, because if they born late in the season or simply aren’t able to gain enough weight, they’ll try to keep feeding, otherwise they would die during hibernation due to lack of stored reserves within their body. If you

see a hedgehog out and about in daylight, or at any time during the winter, it will need help. If it’s not

obviously injured, a cardboard box lined with newspaper, with a plastic bottle filled with warm water – to act as a mini radiator – will make a good home. Keep it in a warm, quiet room, away from dogs. Tinned cat food is the best thing to feed them, along with a dish of fresh water, and then call a local wildlife charity for advice on what’s best. Hedgehogs which are too small to survive hibernation – under 600 grams - will need to be kept much warmer, to keep them awake, feeding and growing through the winter months.

GARDENING THIS MONTH Celebrating the Christmas Tree

There is nothing more Christmassy than a well dressed Christmas tree, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The first Christmas Trees came to Britain sometime in the 1830s. They became very popular in 1841, when Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's German husband) had a Christmas tree set up in Windsor Castle. In 1848, a drawing of "The Queen's Christmas tree at Windsor Castle" was published in The Illustrated London News. The

drawing was republished in Godey's Lady's Book, Philadelphia in December 1850; however they removed the Queen's crown and Prince Albert's moustache to make it look 'American'! The publication of the drawing helped Christmas trees become popular in the UK and USA. In

Victorian times, the tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars. In many parts of Europe, candles are still used to decorate Christmas trees. These days low-voltage LED lights and even pre-lit artificial trees are commonplace and the thought of naked flames on a tree isn’t worth thinking about. A recent craze, albeit mainly highlighted in the newspapers, is the increase in use of upside down trees (pictured) and maybe the perfect solution if you have inquisitive little ones or male dog puppies! Real cut trees continue to remain popular despite the ever improved realism of artificial trees. As customers, we are looking for the best needle retention so the likes of Norway Spruce, once the doyen of Christmas tree sales has now been superseded by the likes of

Nordmann, Noble Fir and the Blue Spruce. This year we will be stocking Nordmann and Norway Spruce Christmas trees in pots as well as varieties of cut trees. Remember although these are potted, bringing them indoors, even for a relatively short period of time, will stress the plants out, so if you plan to establish the tree outdoors, keep it outdoors!

Dressing your indoor tree

Getting the right theme There are a whole host of colour schemes out there that suit Christmas; red and green are probably the most well-known, but other ones such as white and gold can work just as well. Check out the themes at the Garden Centre – the Mulled Wine section (pictured) features a wealth of gold, red, purple and burgundy - all those rich and regal colours which look stunning together. The important thing is to choose a theme and stick to it. This will give you (and any little ones helping out) some guidelines to follow. This should mean you’ll end up with a tree that’s really got some thought behind it, rather than one that looks slapdash.

advice.

Give it a fresh cut This isn’t decoration as such, but you should definitely make a new cut in the base of the trunk (about an inch – 2cm in from the current cut should do the trick). This will ensure the tree takes in the maximum amount of water, keeping it fresh and healthy looking. Make sure you continue to add water, though: fresh cut trees can be amazingly thirsty things! See Top Real Tree Tips for more

Lights first! Always, always put the lights on first: it’s far too much hassle to do it the other way around! Weave the strings of lights around the tree, starting with the base of the foliage, then the middle, then the top. Continually stop, turn the lights on and step back to take a look at the tree, checking to make sure you haven’t left any major gaps. If you have more than one set of lights, split the distribution to get even coverage. We recommend a minimum of 360 lights for a 1.8m (6ft) tree. Remember if one of your LED lights fails the string will continue to shine! Check out the Premier Supabrights static LED lights available in five single colours and mixed colours (pictured).

Remember to include depth It’s important to remember that things like baubles and other ornaments need to be placed in a way that indicates depth; otherwise they’ll just look simply ‘stuck on’! The key to this is to not hang the decorations right on the tip of the branch; place some of them further into the foliage - to create a multi-layer effect. It can be a bit fiddly doing it this way, but trust us; it’s well worth the effort! Instead of using tinsel on our shop dressed trees we tend to use garlands and artificial flowers to plug up any gaps!

Make sure every things even Rather than throwing everything on to your tree and hoping for the best, take time, stand back and check your progress every ten minutes or so. This way you’ll be able to see if there are any gaps developing. We use different sizes of baubles aiming to place larger ones to the base and to the middle with smaller ones following to the top. The base decorations are always the baubles then infill with other shapely decorations and the tinsel. A good way to get an even look is to add things one side at a time. So, one gold bauble on all four sides, then one silver bauble on all four sides, then a trail of gold tinsel, a trail of silver tinsel, etc. Indeed the more considered your initial approach is, the less likely you are to end up having to make adjustments later on. The crowning glory is the tree topper- fairies, stars (in all colours and sizes) as well more obscure and unusual pieces to complete the picture!

KEEP YOUR HOUSEPLANTS HEALTHY As we enter the busy festive season, don’t overwater your indoor plants! Many plants are killed by overwatering through the winter months, so aim to keep them on the drier side, especially foliage houseplants. However, to flower well, azaleas need to be kept moist all the time, but not sitting in water. Azaleas and Cyclamen should be watered through the bottom of the pot to allow the plant to draw up the water it requires and then remove any excess. Ensure all your plants receive as much natural daylight as possible. However, avoid moving plants too often as this can cause stress and leaf drop. Generally speaking, once a new plant is established in its new location, apart from turning it to help encourage balanced growth, it’s best not moved. Popular Christmas plants such as Poinsettias, Moth Orchids and planted bowl displays need warmth and should be located well away from cold draughts.

TOP REAL TREE TIPS Buy your fresh Christmas tree in good time - if choosing a cut tree make sure that it looks nice and green give it a shake and avoid any that lose a lot of needles. There are many different types of tree available, however, just like last year we are stocking the low needle- drop Nordman Fir and Noble Fir trees. Whatever you choose cut an inch off the base of the trunk and stand your cut tree outside in a deep bucket of water for at least 24 hours before bringing it into the house. Try and find a cool spot in the house for the tree (avoid radiators!) and make sure it sits in a reservoir of water – many tree stands have a built in reservoir - which should be topped up regularly - treat the tree like a cut flower!
