Get away – for less, this Summer holiday! The kids have just broken up from school for the long six week break……you’d love to book a week off work to take them away, but that’s going to be expensive, right? It’s a myth - it needn’t cost any more for a week’s camping in beautiful surroundings, than one good day out at a theme park for a family of four or five – so what are you waiting for? First things first – destination. Coastal campsites are going to be costlier, but even so, it may be a lot cheaper than you think! Family run sites may have fewer frills, but you can stay from as little as £15 £20 per night for the whole family – that can’t be bad! Second task – equipment. A fourman tent will not really sleep five, especially if it turns out to be a rainy week – better to choose an 8-berth and have extra space for dining or relaxing under cover. Plenty of spacious tents are available cheaply on selling sites, as families upgrade, or can be bought new for as little as £100 – look out for discount codes for those well-known camping gear shops, and make the most of the Summer sales! Or why not borrow or share with friends?

12

Thirdly – what to take with you? This is where you can spend or save, as you wish. Many discount shops sell camping gear, such as water containers, tableware and so on, sometimes for as little as £1! A lot depends on the facilities available on-site, but the very basics for a family with young children would be:

Tent, pegs and groundsheet • Sleeping •pump bag each, airbeds and • Battery-powered or wind-up lanterns water carrier • Collapsible Bucket with lid – to save the •midnight mad-dash, or for wet

•

clothes Large plastic tub with handles – for carrying washing-up or laundry Spare tent pegs and mallet Camping stove, gas cartridges, cookware, folding table or stand Picnic bench or folding table &chairs Cool box or bag for perishables Plastic tableware, glasses & cutlery Bin liners, washing-up kit Kitchen roll & wet wipes

• • • • • • •

• • • • • • • • • • •

Gaffer tape – for emergency repairs Bungee cords Clothes pegs Towels & toiletries Waterproofs Plenty of practical clothing & amp; shoes Sun protection First Aid kit Fire blanket Travel board games, books & amp; toys Phone charger cable & power bank All that you need now is to get up and go – so what are you waiting for? Enjoy!

Exciting Time...

August is an exciting time for swimmers as not only is it the Rio Olympic Games it’s also when the National Championships occur. Swimmers at Maxwell Swim Club, based in Aylesbury and Buckingham are excited as six of them posted fast enough times at the Regional’s in May to be invited to the National Championships.

Throughout May, a record number of Maxwell's swimmers competed in the regional finals, where entry times were faster than ever before, and raced to many podium finishes and personal bests.

Excellence, Teamwork and Enthusiasm are important for swimming and Maxwell place a strong focus on these as the core values of the club. Head coach Lisa Atkinson explains “To compete at the highest level takes a combination of dedication and technique. The difference between winning and losing can come down to a mis-timed turn or a poor start. We therefore focus our training on developing technique and building well rounded athletes.” Teamwork is a strong component of the club as

at times swimming can be a difficult sport. At Maxwell we believe a successful swimmer is a happy swimmer and this can be achieved with the encouragement and support of your swimming family.

Outside the pool swimmers take part in gym training, receive nutritional advice and are taught responsibility. Looking after all that swim kit is not Mum and Dad’s job, so swimmers learn to take care of themselves and their equipment to be able to prepare for training and competition.

If you would like to get involved in competitive swimming please go onto our website www.maxwellswimclub.org to request a trial, and it could be you swimming for gold. 15

WHITTLEBURY CHARITY FAIR TO SUPPORT CHILD BEREAVEMENT UK The annual Whittlebury charity shopping fair will take place on 28th and 29th September at The Orangery and Pavilion, Whittlebury Park. This year the fair will be raising funds for Child Bereavement UK which has recently opened a centre in Milton Keynes supporting families in the local and surrounding areas. Child Bereavement UK support families and educates professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement. The charity’s newly opened centre in Milton Keynes provides a key local service where advice can be sought and support given for as long as is necessary. Ruth Sanger, Regional Fundraising and Communications Officer at

20

Child Bereavement UK said ‘it is wonderful that The Whittlebury Charity Shopping Fair will be supporting us this year and we are very much looking forward to being involved. Support from the local community in raising funds and awareness is vital in order for us to help families rebuild their lives after the devastation of child bereavement.’ The fair will also raise money for; Helen and Douglas house, hospice care for children and young adults and Macmillian Cancer Support Northampton. Over 65 stall holders from all over the country will come to the fair for the two days selling a huge array of items from

clothes, homewares, gifts, food, toys, gardening accessories, personalised stationary, jewellery and much more. Fair founder Sam Satchell said ‘we are delighted to support our new charity Child Bereavement UK, it is a wonderful charity supporting many families locally. Every penny we raise goes direct to the charities as the venue is very generously donated by Jeff and Carol Sargent and all costs are covered by our kind sponsors Knight Frank, Be Upstanding Marquees, Nicholson’s, Heaven and Stubbs, Bay Tree Cottage and Easy Lightbulbs.

GARDENING THIS MONTH...

‘School’s out for the summer!’

Engaging children with plants and gardening might be good fun to while away a few hours this summer, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.

As an inquisitive four year old, I do remember quite vividly the arrival of a huge lorry to our house and the unloading of our new lawn. Being knee high to a grasshopper I can vividly see a mountain of turves appear in front of my eyes in matter of minutes. It was late summer and my father wanted to create a new lawn in the back garden which had previously been given over to a

large vegetable garden. Through my mind’s eye I do remember trying to move and carry one of these green ‘sods’ with dusty soil flying everywhere using my rather undersized child-size wheelbarrow. Suffice to say perhaps this is why I’m not such a keen fan of manicured lawns as the exercise was as lasting as were the blisters as I tried to help with the lawn the next day! Our childhood recollections of nature,

the local park, the seaside and even our first visit to a plant

centre, can hold wonderful triggers in later life. Yes, I do fondly remember buying with my pocket

money my first plant, a Rose of Sharon, Hypericum calycinum with its striking yellow saucer-shaped flowers with fibre optic-like stamens. As the school holidays are in full swing, there’s no better time than now to engage the kids with gardening projects, or take them to outdoor places which will both inspire and delight them. It’s surely the perfect time to redress the balance of children’s lack of connection with nature, however in view of the recent craze of Pokémon Go we’ll no doubt see more people taking to the great outdoors, albeit tracking down virtual reality creatures so hopefully enjoying nature at the same time. Some 12 per cent of children in England have not visited a park, forest, garden or any other natural environment for at least 12 months, according to a recent Government study.

A poll by Persil found that more than half of parents encourage their children to avoid messy activities such as gardening and baking. One in three children say that they did not like getting dirty, their preferred activities being television-watching, and playing on video games.” Well, that’s easy to resolve; buy them their own gardening gloves! Some companies have made inroads into tempting youngsters into the garden with their child-friendly products. The children’s range of garden tools, brightly coloured Wellington boots and gloves from Little Pals are perfect for getting the little ones started. Moulton Mill produces a range of smaller and lighter hand tools, including trowels and forks in their Budding Gardeners range too!

Children’s activities…

* The all-you-can eat hanging basket: The beauty of this idea is you get so many mini-projects in one basket. Fill a lined basket with potting compost, set a Strawberry plant in the centre and add Basil and Dill plants around the edge. Marigolds and Nasturtiums (pictured) provide edible petals and colour. Tumbling tomatoes can cascade down the sides. Remember to hang at

children’s eye level so they can feed and regularly water the basket too. * Plant up an old handbag, Wellington boot or high-heeled shoe. Adults need to make a hole in the bottom, add some compost and let the child put in a plant or two, such as a Petunia, Spider plant (pictured) or Chilli plant. * Create a miniature garden: These projects take gardening down to children’s eye level and make plants seem less intimidating. Use an old washing-up bowl or standard sized seed tray ensuring that there are some drainage holes in the base. By

Question: Name the popular gardener who established the famous Blue Peter garden at BBC TV Centre in 1974?

A. Chris Collins B. Geoffrey Smith C. Percy Thrower Pop your answer A, B or C together with your name and address to:

competition@buckingham-nurseries.co.uk Or by post to: Buckingham Garden Centre, Tingewick Road, Tel: 01280 822133 Buckingham, MK18 4AE. The closing date for entries is 30th September 2016. www.buckinghamgardencentre.co.uk . www.facebook.com/BuckinghamNurseries Open 7 Days a Week. 24

including children’s own toys - dolls, dinosaurs or fairies gives them

a sense of ownership. For a dinosaur garden, use prehistoriclooking plants such as small ferns and moss, plus creeping Mint and Thyme for the dinosaur models to creep along. An indoor mini garden follows the same principle. Use cacti and pebbles to create a desert cowboy scene. *If it rains, take growing inside. The old favourite of a Cress head grown in an old pair of tights is great, but update it by using popcorn seeds – children prefer Popcorn to Cress. Use seeds sown on cotton wool

stuffed in a pair of old tights and tied at the top. Place on a pot and water for a quick introduction to the magic of growing your own. Another variation is to sow into empty egg shells filled with potting compost and sprinkle seeds of fast growing herbs, such as Chives, Parsley and Basil! *Seed bombs: Seed bomb some waste ground by mixing seed (wildflowers would be best), compost and dry clay powder to stick your bomb together. What you need: A cup of compost, a cup of clay soil (from the garden), a handful of seeds and some water. Mix together the clay, compost seeds and water to a consistent mixture. Aim to get them around 5cm in diameter to

create a lumpy sphere. Allow them to dry a little before bagging up ready for launching! * Plants for free. If you’re on a budget, cut-off tops of Carrots, Turnips, Parsnips or Beetroot will grow again on a saucer of water or in a pot. Or try Pineapple tops using the same method or Avocado stones or Sweet Potatoes (pictured) balanced half over a glass of water. The painted faces are optional! * Grow some potatoes for Christmas. You’ll need to buy special early varieties of prepared tubers, available at the Garden Centre until late August, to get a crop in pots for the end of the year. Simply plant one spud per pot and off they grow – you just need to add a bit more compost to the pot until you reach the top!
