Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these

values have been held for over 13 years. Since buying the local franchise in 2006 they have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community whilst introducing their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross into the family business along with Dan, Mark & Jo as demand for their service has grown.

W h a t s h o u l d I l o o k fo r i n a c o nveya n c e r ? Buying or selling a property can be a stressful process, but there are some easy steps you can take to help to make the conveyancing process as smooth and as calm as possible. Reputation and client satisfaction Take time to research your solicitor or conveyancer. Recommendations by professionals, friends or family are a good starting point. Visit the solicitor’s website and if they have client testimonials, have a read through. Some firms have profiles, photos and contact details of their conveyancers, so you can be reassured who you will be dealing with. Law firms may also be accredited with The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS), providing evidence of a recognised quality standard. Transparent costs Like with most services, you will probably want to get 2 or 3 quotes for your conveyancing work. Make sure you are comparing like-for-like quotes, that you see a breakdown of the fees and that these are

transparent and fixed from the outset. Regular communication Property conveyancing is often dependent on a ‘chain’ and complications can arise that may hold the process up, so it is important your conveyancer keeps you informed of developments as they happen. When choosing your conveyancer, check how they will be communicating with you, for example, ask if they have direct dial and email, and can you check the progress of your matter online 24/7. If you would like to talk to Spratt Endicott Solicitor’s team of property experts in Buckingham about buying or selling a property, please contact Abigail Grantham, Head of Buckingham office on 01280 730705 or email agrantham@se-law.co.uk.

S p r i n g i s N a t u re s Wa y. . .

Centre’s Chris Day.

That amazing American comedian, the late Robin Williams once said: ‘Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’ and we couldn’t agree more, especially in the year we have just endured, says Buckingham Garden

NEW ARRIVALS Now is a great time to establish evergreen trees (including Quercus ilex, the Holm Oak, pictured) and shrubs such as Ceanothus, Euonymus and Hebe. The combination of warming soils after the chilly weather in early March, and April showers is good for the re-establishment process, especially for large evergreen hedging and conifers. If planting larger specimens do make sure the soil is well improved by working in generous amounts of compost or well-rotted manure to help improve its structure and moisture-retention of the soil. Don’t skimp on applying mulches around the base of your newly planted plants to help maintain a moist growing medium. HEALTHY ROSES Start spraying roses - opt for

Rose Clear ® Ultra. This is a systemic insecticide/ fungicide treatment and contains the fungicide triticonazole. You can use Rose Clear Ultra up to four times through the growing season – and for 18

best results it is advisable to start early and spray often for those rose bushes particularly prone to Blackspot (pictured) and Powdery Mildew. Where roses were infected with blackspot the previous season, spraying should start in spring as the buds burst. Always read the instructions carefully on all chemicals before use. If you are planning on establishing some new rose bushes this year be aware that there is a shortage of roses due to production issues caused by last year’s spring lockdown. SUMMER BLOOMS Once we are into early April you can start direct sowing under cover of half-hardy annuals – Cosmos, Nicotiana (the variety ‘Lime Green’ pictured), Snapdragons, Marigolds and Nasturtiums amongst others. The vagaries of the British climate can make sowing direct a hit and miss affair in cold springs. To overcome this it is possible to sow most annuals in trays in early March under unheated glass, such as an unheated greenhouse or windowsill. Thinly scatter the seeds, and once they have a pair of true leaves as well as round shaped cotyledons (or seed leaves) then prick them out into 9cm pots (3inch) or you can prick them out into modular 15cm x 10cm (6in x 4in) trays and grow them on under glass until they root through the modules. This part of the process takes four weeks on average. Plant out once the fear of frosts has passed in late May.

MUST-DO’S Feed bare soil between your existing plants with general-purpose fertiliser such as Vitax Q4, or organically with Blood, Fish and Bone and dose acid-loving Rhododendrons and Camellias with Maxicrop Sequestered Iron to help improve overall health and flowering ability. Soft fruits, including Blackberries, Loganberries and Blackcur-

rants will benefit from a highnitrogen feed such as Sulphate of Ammonia. Apply 35g/sq. m (1¼ oz/sq. yd) as a top dressing to the soil surface and work into the soil well. Stake your perennials before it’s too late. You can use Link Stake supports. With these the mesh grid is simply lifted as the plants grow which is perfect for Delphiniums, Lupins and Penstemon. Alternatively, you could use twiggy sticks which allow plants to clamber through and often look more naturalistic in the border. Prune off the previous season’s flowered shoots from Hydrangeas and Winter Jasmine to stimulate strong productive growth. Pinch-out Fuchsia, Sweet Peas and Pelargoniums to help encourage bushiness and heavier flowering. Deadhead early flowering primulas as early as possible, as they tend to crossbreed very easily.

Sow direct in the ground Garden Peas, Broad Beans, Brassicas, Leeks, root veg, Spinach, Chicory, Swiss Chard, salad and hardy herbs. Start tender vegetables (Aubergines, Cucumbers, Peppers and Tomatoes). Light and warmth are essential with these protected crops so do watch the weather and make sure they can be given good frost protection. Pot them up as soon as they are large enough to handle into 4in (10cm) pots using Miracle-Gro Peat-Free Multi-Purpose Compost. Plant Jerusalem Artichokes, Rhubarb and Asparagus crowns in well prepared soil warmed by the spring sunshine. Tackle the weeds: if you eradicate them this month, some will give up, and you can take it easier in June. If you haven’t already done it, now is a good time to clean the glass in your greenhouse to make the most of the increasing light levels. Use Agralan Citrox Greenhouse Disinfectant for giving the greenhouse a full clean up, including the staging, tools, pots, seed trays and capillary matting. There is no need to remove plants when applying this disinfectant.

BULBS FOR SUMMER COLOUR Fill pots with glamorous summerflowering bulbs including Liliums, compact Dahlias (pictured, Collerette Mixed) and dwarf varieties of Gladioli. You can successfully ‘lasagne plant’ your Lily bulbs and Gladioli corms in two or three layers of compost in your deep patio pots. Space the bulbs out equally in groups of three or five so they are not touching and allow 3-4in (8-10cm) between the layers to give the plants plenty of room to develop. The benefit of this type of planting is the extended display of colour. If you are planning to grow Tuberous Begonias make sure you start them off in the warmth of a sunny windowsill or frost-free greenhouse. Pendula Begonias are always best started off in small pots, says 10cm (4in) so they can get

a head start before being moved on into hanging baskets or window boxes. Use a peat-free multi-purpose compost for all your bulb growing and do make sure there are sufficient crocks in those larger pots where larger numbers of bulbs are going to be planted. LAWNS Mow the lawn fortnightly, more if the grass is romping away. Only ever reduce the height by a third to avoid scalping the lawn. Gradually lower the cutting height from 1.5in (4cm) to half an inch (1cm) as the season moves on. Rake out moss and uproot problem weeds. If the moss defeats the handson approach, then it would be advisable to apply some Maxicrop Moss Killer & Lawn Tonic. This is a 2-in-1 solution that contains a natural organic seaweed base, killing moss and offering rapid greening to the lawn. This product blackens moss within hours and rapidly

stimulates grass re-growth of the treated area. Apply when the weather is fair, the soil is moist, the grass is dry and frost free - do not apply during prolonged dry periods, frost, or if heavy rain is imminent. Always read the label prior to application. Maxicrop Moss Killer & Lawn Tonic contains iron sulphate, so keep out of reach from children and keep away from food, drink and animal feed stuffs. cold water can be a shock to plants and, if possible, rain water. As plants start to grow they’ll also need a good feeding with a fertiliser - one high in potash, such as Phostrogen, for flowering plants and one with a balanced mixture of nutrients for foliage ones - you can’t beat Baby Bio for your greenery. You can either use a liquid fertiliser and feed every 10 to 14 days from spring to the autumn or – if you tend to forget to feed regularly – use a controlledrelease fertiliser such as Miracle-Gro Continuous Release Plant Food.

HOUSEPLANTS Many customers have asked what, if anything, they should be doing for their houseplants at this time of the year. As the days are getting longer, plants will start to actively grow again. So, most of them will need more water than they required in winter. Always make sure you use tepid water as

Press Release from Buckinghamshire Council

Veolia working on behalf of Buckinghamshire to create a more sustainable future Buckinghamshire Council’s recycling and waste contractor, Veolia is introducing improvements at the London Road East Depot in Amersham to help create a more sustainable waste contract. The first improvement is the installation of 136 energy efficient solar panels to the roof of a vehicle workshop on site. The panels will harness solar energy and use it to power the activities of the operation. As well as being a truly renewable energy source the use of solar energy will reduce carbon emissions on site by 12.25 tonnes per year, which is equivalent to planting 563 trees. In the first 17 days the solar panels have generated 1815.86 kWh, a home will generally use around 3600 kWh per year so the panels have already generated enough energy to power a home for 6 months. To enhance biodiversity, beehives have been installed at the depot and wildflower meadow areas planted to encourage bees to use the hives. This is with the assistance and advice of the Chalfonts’ Beekeepers Society. Veolia has further plans to install bird boxes and bug hotels on site this year and work with local primary schools to make the same improvements for biodiversity at their sites. Selected schools will be provided with a biodiversity pack that includes bird boxes, bug hotels and their own wildflower seeds to create insect friendly havens nearby.

Furthermore, 6 electric vehicle charging points have been installed at the depot for the future use of electric cars and vans by employees on site. Lucy Murphy, Veolia’s Senior Contract Manager Buckinghamshire, said: “We’re very excited to support Buckinghamshire Council in their efforts to provide a sustainable environment. The biodiversity crisis is a worldwide problem, but it’s also a very local issue which means that even small changes can have a big impact. “Improving biodiversity at our sites can help increase numbers of pollinators, promote cleaner air and water and enhance the mental and physical health for people working and living near these wasted spaces. “We’re delighted to be able to extend these small changes to the community by inviting local schools to plant wildflowers and install safe havens for insects and birds with the provision of a kit from Veolia.”

great example of the work being done in Buckinghamshire to improve our local environment.

“The introduction of solar panels and the use of solar energy on site demonstrates Buckinghamshire Council’s commitment to reducing our county’s environmental impact and promoting sustainability.
