With summer holidays finally here, exam results still a nail-biting few weeks away and exciting new challenges facing school and college leavers, I have a bright new challenge of my own, and a rather shiny object on a certain finger of my left hand……..!

Top ways to save on a new car in August!

If you’re driving a clapped-out old wreck, or there are more miles on the clock than you’d like for the daily commute, August is the time to buy – so many offers are available now on unsold 17 plate cars, before the new registration is released on 1st September. New-to- you cars are also in abundance, in the next few weeks, as owners look to sell before taking delivery of a new vehicle, or trade-in through dealers.

Here are a few top tips for getting the best deal on a new, or new-to- you, car:

• Check the VED (road tax) band your chosen car is in – these have changed for cars registered after 1st April 2017, and can make a big difference to the costs involved in that first year on the road – after which it’s a flat rate of £140 for cars costing less than £40,000 new

• Decide on the factors that are most important for your driving experience, in a new vehicle – and be open-minded about the make and model, in order to save when buying new-to- you

• Shop around, and always ask the dealer for their best price, and then keep haggling!

Never accept the first deal you’re offered, and be prepared to travel to view cars further afield, particularly if you’re looking to buy a used vehicle • Towards the end of August, there

are hot deals around on new cars, with dealers wanting to clear ‘old stock’ before the new registration is released, and so you’ve even more haggling power at this time

• Look carefully at the small print if you’re buying on finance, to avoid any nasty shocks.

Make sure you can afford the repayments, and that the interest rate charged isn’t ridiculously high – there are even 0% finance options available, in some cases

• Car insurance premiums are constantly on the rise, so doublecheck the cost to insure the car you’re after, before deciding that’s the one for you – choosing those with any modifications or higherpowered engines, or even vehicle types most targeted by thieves, will increase premiums dramatically – particularly for younger drivers and those with points or previous claims

WHITTLEBURY CHARITY SHOPPING FAIR 2017

The annual Whittlebury charity shopping fair will take place on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28 th September at The Orangery and Pavilion, Whittlebury Park. This year the fair will be raising funds for Child Bereavement UK, Helen and Douglas House, Oxford and Macmillian, Northampton.

Child Bereavement UK support families and educates professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement. The charity’s newly opened centre in Milton Keynes provides a key local service where advice can be sought and support given for as long as is needed.

Helen and Douglas house, based in Oxford cares for terminally ill children, young adults and their families through exceptional hospice care.

Macmillian is a national charity but in Northamptonshire they want to ensure no one faces cancer alone and provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support.

Over 65 stall holders from all over the country will

come to the fair for the two days selling a huge array of items from clothes, homewares, gifts, food, toys, gardening accessories, personalised stationary, jewellery and much more.

Fair founder Sam Satchell said ‘we are delighted to help raise funds for these wonderful charities who support many people locally. Every penny we raise goes direct to the charities as the venue is very generously donated by Jeff and Carol Sargent and all costs are covered by our kind sponsors Knight Frank, Be Upstanding Marquees, Nicholson’s, Heaven and Stubbs, Bay Tree Cottage, Frontier Holidays, Hagerty and Winchester House School.

Survival rates vary by type, but with ongoing advances in treatments, the statistics continue to improve; 50% of people who are diagnosed now survive 10 years or more – double the number 40 years ago.

We will all know someone affected by cancer, so it makes sense to do our bit to help with fundraising to find a cure, and the Shine Night Walk is just one way to show your support this September.

Back to School – top tip starting in Reception!

When you’re just four years old, starting off in the big world of school, conquering the playground, lining up when the bell goes and remembering not to call your teacher ‘Mum’seems just a little bit daunting…..but with a bit of preparation, it will all be plain sailing.

Most pre-schools and nursery classes do a phased start into school, over the previous term - with visits and then whole mornings, playing with the other kids in Reception. Story time, snacks and maybe some painting – enjoyable activities to help little ones make friends, settle in and feel comfortable in their new surroundings.

September comes around all too quickly, with the obligatory photos in smart new uniforms and then off to class after a long Summer playing and relaxing without much of a routine – but the wrench is worse for parents than their little ones, who adapt quickly, enjoy their action-packed days and sleep well as a result!

If your child struggles with changes, or is moving to a new school where they don’t know other kids, here are a few tips to help the transition go smoothly: - Talk about what’s going to happen, well in advance. Discuss the routine – what time you’ll get up in the morning, what they’d like to choose for their packed lunches, which route you’ll walk or drive to school.

- Make friends ahead of time – there will be plenty of new starters from your neighbourhood, so if you’ve recently moved to the area, try posting on social media in a mother and toddler group for your town, or asking at a playscheme or sports activity group for little ones, to see if there may be classmates that your child could have playdates with, before starting school.

- Don’t be surprised if there are tears – it’s not always a bad thing! Tiny children who are super-excited about a new school, may become tearful after a day or so, if things aren’t quite as amazing as they expected. Conversely, kids who worried and cried and didn’t want to let Mum leave them on the first day, may well be bouncing around and full of beans by the end of a week. They all adapt, learn to socialise with people who are fun to be around, and after a few weeks it’s like they’ve always been at school.

As we bask in the late summer sunshine and enjoy our gardens, there are a whole group of plants we really need to think about including in our new plantings for this autumn, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The hallowed Wimbledon centre court turf made the headlines a few weeks ago – the sward quality wasn’t up to its usual impeccable standards was reported in the newspapers. The amazing work by the ground staff at the All England Club is truly astonishing but

we have to blame the unusually warm and dry recent weather that left patches of beige-coloured grass or, worse, dirt near the baselines - something that usually doesn't happen until the latter days of the Grand Slam tournament.

The hot dry summer has taken its toll on our not-so-green patches and I know many, including my neighbour, who has just rolled out a new lawn of the artificial kind this summer. Our lawns are of course made up of mixture of different grasses to create blends which offers many useful qualities - including being hardwearing and robust enough to tolerate drought. All is not lost as the good news is lawns generally recover quickly from prolonged drought once the autumn rains arrive.

Ornamental grasses are a different kind of plant we really underestimate in our garden space, which I think is a shame as they provide such useful texture, character and form unmatched by many other hardy perennials. For us gardeners their presence develops through the seasons as bright and colourful foliage is joined by graceful swaying flowers heads that last well into winter.

The great virtue of these grasses is you don’t need acres of space to grow them in. Many of them, especially the Festuca such as Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ and ‘Intense Blue’ (pictured) and Pennisetum, the so-called and the well named Fountain Grass grow well in patio pots.

(Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Silberspinne’) and Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana) a variegated variety of which ‘Splendid Star’ is one, are always best planted in large, heavy pots to prevent them from blowing over in strong winds. My favourite, Carex ‘Evergold’ really zings out through the winter months and contrasts beautifully with the flowers of Violas and Winter flowering pansies set against its bright golden variegation. You can create a great display – in borders or pots - when combining it with the black-leaved grass-like perennial Ophiopogon planiscapus Nigrescens (pictured above with Carex).

If you have more space to fill – large border grasses can be planted in bold groups or striking drifts.

From green to gold to purple, to a host of patterned and variegated forms, ornamental grasses do come in a wide range of colours, sizes and growing habits.

Sensory wise, taller grasses also add movement to otherwise static displays, catching the summer breeze to add interest and catch the eye. The musthave plant for this job and growing to around two metres in height is the bold form of Golden Oats, Stipa gigantea. It is always mentioned on gardening programmes and you see it widely used in show gardens for the impact it brings. It produces imposing oat-like panicles from mid-summer onwards. If you retain these on the plant for the winter (pictured) they can make a dramatic statement in your borders.

If you can position grasses close to paths and seating

areas so you can run your hands over the feathery foliage and flowers as you pass, this is a great way of interacting with the plants and absolutely perfect for children to appreciate the sensory qualities of these plants too! By far one of the best for low level plantings would be the Feather Grass, Stipa tenuissima. You can achieve beautiful bold groups of this delicate, graceful, densely tufted bright green foliage grass which shimmers in the breeze. It will self sow so it may ‘move’ around the garden. Allow between 3-5 plants per square metre for best visual impact.

As already mentioned Festuca, Pennisetum and Stipa should feature on the shopping list, however Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ is another to include. Often described as a graceful, fountainous grass that takes its name from the horizontal cream bands on the leaves. It is for this wonderful foliage that this striking grass is grown, but it may also produce silky, finger-like flower spikes in late summer. If these do appear, they are usually retained for several months, so give this plant a dramatic winter presence.

You can see plenty of grasses at the Garden Centre on our display benches and we often use them in plant associations in the autumn with perennials such as Asters, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Sedums - perfect if you are looking for prairie style planting combination ideas. They also feature in our displays of conifers later in the year. The Mid Shire Orchard Group will be talking community orchards as well as doing some apple pressing demonstrations over both days. The local Beekeeping Group will be holding their annual show on the Sunday. Our local school challenges for growing the largest sunflower head, the heaviest pumpkin and best decorated pumpkin will be staged and judged on the Saturday too, plus much more.
