The Help to Buy ISA is a new scheme being offered by the Government giving a helping hand to First Time Buyers.
If you are saving to buy your first home into a Help to Buy ISA, the government will boost your savings by 25%. Pets Corner This month’s topic is a very important one if you have pet dogs and small children in your home – and it’s all about something animal behaviourists call Calming Signals.
Calming Signals are subtle signs that your dog uses to show how it feels, to other dogs and any humans that know how to read them. They may suggest it is inwardly stressed and trying to handle a situation without resorting to their instinctive behaviour, and will usually be shown long before a dog snaps, growls or reacts in another obviously upset or aggressive manner. 26
To spot the signs, you need to know your dog, and what their relaxed and happy behaviour looks like. Little gestures, such as blinking, yawning and changes in posture, can give away how your dog feels, and if you have small children around the home, then it’s important to know your dog is getting stressed so that you can intervene.

After the festivities of Christmas and New Year, March necessitates a little more care with the pennies, so making tasty meals, relatively cheaply, is the order of the day. penne, mix well and cover the Flavour is key – you can buy cheaper cuts of meat, or make tasty vegetarian alternatives, if you season and use herbs to accentuate the taste. Simmering stews and soups gently, such as in a slow cooker or low oven of the Aga or Rayburn – or even in a cast iron casserole on top of a banked-down logburner – costs less and adds depth to the flavours. Jacket potatoes are also great cooked this way, and can be filled with whatever you fancy, for inexpensive and healthy ‘fast food’. Batch cooking – spending a few hours once a week, making meals which will ‘do two’ or can be frozen for another day, means you can eat good home-cooking all the time, without the effort when you’re busy. Mince – beef, lamb or veggie – is definitely your friend; it can make so many dishes! If you
prepare a large batch with onions, mushrooms, peppers and garlic, add dried herbs and season to taste, a couple of tins of chopped tomatoes, stock cubes and simmer gently, it’s ready to be chilled and frozen in family-sized portions, and defrosted to make a quick tea when you’re short of time. • Cottage pie - add baked beans, or diced mixed veg to the mince, with mashed potato on top • Spag Bol – add extra chopped tomatoes and herbs, and serve with spaghetti or penne, for a change • Chilli – add a readymade chilli sauce for speed, or swap in baked beans instead of kidney beans, add chilli powder, simmer and serve with rice • Pasta bake – add an equal quantity of water to the mince mix, add dry
top with cheese – pop in the oven until the pasta has taken up all the liquid and the cheese is bubbling – mmmm!
For those of us who need school or work lunches, cook extra portions, microwave until piping hot at breakfast time and use a food flask to keep it hot for lunch – tasty, filling and very much cheaper than the canteen!

To herald spring, nothing is more full of cheer than a forsythia bush in bloom. A bit of space is needed for this large shrub (see pic) . As a complete contrast, the diminutive Epimediums hold their dainty shy flowers above compact foliage, happy in light shade and good soil. Colours include pinks, reds, yellow and white. But position where you can appreciate the exquisite shapes and shades at close range! 36

Jobs in the Garden
So much to do, especially in gardens that hold the water making working on the soil difficult. Pruning work not done yet should be carried out. Fruit trees and bushes, general shaping of shrubs and climbers. Cut back dogwoods grown for their stem colour, which is best seen on one year shoots. Planting is still ok for bare root trees, hedges, fruit bushes etc. providing roots are kept moist and well watered in.

Seed beds can be prepared for sowing at the end of the month. Many crops are best
grown in succession with, say, 7-14 day intervals to give continual cropping through summer to autumn. Subjects include lettuce, radishes, spinach, beetroot and turnips, to name but a few.
Early potatoes are best planted about 30cm apart, ‘spit’ deep (spade depth) in a manured trench. Cover with the soil from the trench.

Discard the hand tools and have a coffee Brackley and district residents are being asked to make space in their tool sheds by putting discarded tools to good use. Brackley Rotary Club is collecting old hand tools to support the Tools for Self Reliance charity. The tools may be handed in at Brackley Rotary’s coffee morning at Brackley Town Hall on Saturday 19 March, from 9.00am to 12noon. The coffee morning and a tombola is in support of the Jaipur Foot organisation, providing artificial limbs, primarily in Asia and Africa. Rotarian Ian Watson said; “We need old and new hand tools (carpentry and metal work, but not garden tools). The tools will be serviced and boxed up by volunteers at the Tools for Self Reliance centre in Northampton. The sets will go to Africa for distribution, helping families produce income to support themselves.” “If you are unable to bring your contribution to the Town Hall, please email Ian Watson: watsonhinton@aol.com and we will try to make a collection.”
