You don’t need a garden to grow something in a pot.

A balcony, window box, or a few pots outside your front door. And of course, the massive explosion of indoor gardening in the last few years means no access to an outside space is no barrier to getting all the benefits that gardening - nurturing - brings.

I’m potty about pots and use them to grow bedding mainly. The pots get planted up in November or December with well-drained, rich compost and I cram as many tulips as I can in. I top with winter flowering violas (I find pansies struggle in any kind of wind) and that looks

good all winter long. In March the tulip foliage starts to bulk and April and May it looks stunning with the voluptuous tulips glowing above a froth of violas. I go for calm, pastels and purples in my back garden but go for energetic and bright colours for the front. The bulbs go over in time for putting out the summer bedding. I change the compost and put in dahlias, pelargoniums, Cosmos, cape daisies.

If you like a tropical jungle look, some of the foliage begonias are stunning. The great thing about pots and bedding is your tastes can be transient; if it isn’t working or looking at its best, it is so easy to change. Combining pots made of the same material creates a really harmonious look, contrasting shape and colour in the planting gives interest and texture.
