GDPR – what does it mean for me?

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation, and it’s a new EU law which came into effect on 25th May 2018, to make sure consumers’ information is correctly handled and protected by any organisation that collects this data.

You may well have received countless emails in the last couple of months, from companies you’ve bought from in the past, asking you to ‘opt-in’ to continue receiving emails, due to the new legislation, but what does it mean for us as consumers?

The old Data Protection law came into effect in 1995, when there wasn’t the

wave of technological wizardry that we currently enjoy – it was more concerned with data held on paper, than information transmitted through cyberspace - so it was certainly due for updating.

There have been many security breaches in recent years, where consumers’ data has been illegally accessed by hackers, leaving these people vulnerable to theft or fraud, and the new legislation is also designed to make companies address these issues.

The key thing for us is that we will have more rights over our own data. There won’t be an automatic opt-in for organisations wishing to use our

information – the default setting is to opt out - and the information to help us make that choice will have to be written in plain English, not the usual jargon or small print.

Access to see our personal data which is held by a company, the right to change anything that’s incorrect and to have the data held about us deleted is also included in the new legislation, and organisations must comply or face heavy fines.

Security breaches must be reported within 72 hours, with those whose data may be affected also being quickly informed, which will mean we can change passwords and limit the risk of theft.

The most obvious benefit for us will be a reduction in unwanted emails, calls and junk mail, cause by companies selling on our personal information without our informed consent to do this – and I’m definitely looking forward to a little more peace and quiet!

water, then slough off any rough areas with a pumice stone, file or use a footscrub. Smooth a good slather of rich moisturiser all over your feet before going to bed, concentrating on the heels and any other rougher areas, and pop on some old socks to sleep in. By morning, your toes will be twinkling and sandal-ready. * Skin – depilate, exfoliate and bronze! Smooth, brown legs are essential for wearing shorts, so taking a few moments to get them beach-ready will be so worthwhile. Use a body brush or invigorating scrub to remove dead skin cells and smooth the skin to prepare for tanning, and then fake that colour whichever

way you choose! You can get great results from a tanning moisturiser, which builds a tan slowly, or if you need speedy results there are mousses and spray tans you can smooth on, for an even glowing colour.

Brackley Squash Sign Off Season in Style

In a thrilling climax to the winter season, both Brackley’s senior men’s teams finished runners-up in their respective divisions to achieve promotion for the second time in a row. In the Oxford County League division 3, the men’s 1st. team led the way from the beginning but despite beating a very strong University team in the last match, they were pipped at the post by Caversham who ended up with the same points as Brackley, but they had won more matches. In division 5 the men’s second team trailed Banbury West End all the way through, but they did manage to spoil their local rival’s 100% record by beating them in the last match and also finishing well ahead of the third placed team. It was a great effort by both squads who look forward to pitting their talents and wits against stronger opponents in the higher divisions in September.

The club continues to strengthen its Ladies and Junior section with regular

training sessions from qualified coaches and participation in county competitions and social events. The Ladies from the Friday night coaching group had their inaugural competitive match at home against Lings Club from Northampton.

Although they were beaten by their more experienced rivals, a great social evening was had by all, finished off by a curry at the local Chilli and Pepper washed down with few well deserved drinks!

The Junior section, which now has over 20 members, has participated in a series of Grand Prix events at various venues in Northamptonshire and also Buckingham. The aim is to enhance the club coaching experience with additional coaching

Ashley Smith finished runner-up in the Men’s Plate competition, Jason Burgon reached the semi-final of the Men’s Over 45, and David Millard finished runner-up in the Men’s Over 55. Squash is a sport for all ages!

The Brackley Jubilee Choir is letting its hair down for the Summer Concert, which will take place on Saturday, 7 July, in St Peter’s Church, Brackley, starting at 7.30 p.m. The programme will be much lighter than the choir’s usual repertoire, including well-known jazz standards arranged for SATB and songs from shows.
