World Smile Day

As we tumble into Autumn, it’s lovely to have another reason to be cheerful – and the first Friday in October is World Smile Day®- when we can all make a real difference, just by helping others.

Founded by the creator of the wellknown Smiley face, Harvey Ball, World Smile Day was first celebrated in 1999 and ever since then, people all around the world have used this day to make a special effort to do just one kind deed, or something that will make another person smile.

As you may have guessed, Harvey Ball was from the US – from Worcester, Massachusetts, to be precise – and he invented that Smiley face with a special place in our hearts - and text messages - way back in 1963! Of course, it was an instant success, even way back then; as it is culturally and gender neutral it appeals to everyone, everywhere as a symbol of happiness.

Over time, Harvey became worried that the true spirit of what he had created Smiley for was being lost through over-commercialisation of the image, so he decided to pull Smiley back to his roots. He created a special day to celebrate every year, to encourage everyone to focus on those important values which Smiley was created to embody. After Harvey’s death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established, to continue the work he started in promoting world kindness.

So, what can you do to celebrate this year, on the 1st? How about making Smiley cupcakes, and taking them into work, school or to share with friends? Maybe host a children’s party, with Smiley face painting, or decorated balloons, or how about getting together and making a giant human Smiley?

I like the idea of ‘paying it forward’ – doing a kind deed ‘just because’,

in the hope that the recipient will do the same for someone else – maybe just opening a door for someone, buying their morning coffee or paying for their car parking if they don’t have the right change? It’s got to be a good thing, if we’re making the world a kinder and more thoughtful place, that’s the Smiley philosophy - so what will you choose to do this World Smile Day?

As a keen gardener, autumn feels to me like the start of a new gardening year with all the excitement and expectation of January 1st; full of resolve and intent. The new National League North season is well underway and Brackley Town have made a remarkable start – unbeaten in their first six games with five wins to their name taking Kevin Wilkin’s side joint top ahead of FA Cup competition that features throughout the autumn.

Saints weny all the way to the second round last season only going out on live BBC TV at Tranmere Rovers.

The core of last season’s side remains with a number of additions including Louis Lomas who has quickly established himself as a stand-out defender as Bracvkley have moved to a changed team formation with three central defenders and wide wing backs who push up to provide great attacking options. Up front Lee Ndlovu and Matt Lowe have been among the goals as Saints have won away at York City, Alfreton Town and Chorley while beating Leamington and Southport at home. The longest journey of the season took Saints to

Blyth, a cool 500 mile round trip, and the team returned with a hard fought and valuable away point from a goal-less draw up in the North-East.

The Venue is now fully open providing a f antastic facility for supporters on match-days and hosting entertainment events such as the monthly Saints Comedy Club and private functions.
