How To Score On Your Credit Rating Balancing the finances at the end of the month remains a challenge for many families. Indeed, new research from leading instant online credit information provider, Equifax, highlights the financial pressures being tackled by consumers, with over a quarter saying their biggest financial fear this year is the rising cost of food. This was closely followed by worries about not being able to make their mortgage repayments for 24% and the increase in fuel costs restricting car usage for 14.3%. Making responsible use of available credit, paying the lowest possible interest rate, is a goal for many consumers. And that includes looking at new credit cards where they offer better terms. But Neil Munroe, External Affairs Director at Equifax, is urging consumers to make sure they understand how their credit information will be used by lenders before they make new applications for credit. He says: "Consumers need to understand what lenders are looking for when granting credit and operating credit card accounts. Knowing that a consumer will be able

repay the credit extended is obviously the number one criteria. But lenders are commercial organisations and, therefore, they will also look at customers from a profitability perspective. Consumers need to be as well informed as possible about how they look to a lender. Many consumers see the credit process as a complete mystery something over which they have no control. But that doesn't have to be the case." Lenders make checks with credit reference agencies to see whether an applicant has kept up to date on repayments. Lenders also use a credit scoring system to decide whether or not to lend to consumers - and in some instances - at what price, as well as for on-going account management. Basically, the better an individual's credit score, the better the rate they will get, helping them take advantage of the best deals. Top tips to improve your credit score: * Register - The electoral roll is used by many companies for identity verification purposes to combat identity fraud so it's vital you are registered at your current address. * Credit activity - Ironically, not having many credit cards or loans can affect your credit score. Lenders are looking for signs that you can repay money so it's worth considering opening an account to establish a credit history. * Changes - If your circumstances have changed and you have had difficulties keeping up payments, then it's important to say so. You can place a Notice of

If you believe a lender/company has provided incorrect information on your credit file, you can raise a Notice of Dispute with the Credit Reference Agency and they will take this up with the lender. This will usually be resolved within 28 days. * CCJs - If you've had a County Court Judgement and it is now settled make sure it's recorded on your file. If not, contact the court to get confirmation details and inform the credit reference agencies, otherwise it will stay on your file for six years. * Defaults - These stay on your file for six years and may affect your ability to get credit. * Stop - If you have been refused credit, obtain a copy of your credit report and do not carry on applying elsewhere. Each search by a lender will leave a footprint on your file. * Avoid the highs More than 30% of your credit limit may be viewed as excessive debt and lead to fears that you may not be able to keep up with repayments. * Be direct - It's easy to forget a payment so set up direct debits and standing orders to ensure payments go out on time. * Close it - Make sure any accounts you don't need or use are closed. Financial firms pay more attention to the total amount of credit available to an individual and while you may not use them, dormant accounts could affect your ability to get credit. * Be early - Try to pay off loans and credit agreements ahead of schedule as lenders look favourably on this.

After four cold winters on the trot, it seems a little strange that, in the middle of January, we have still had no snow or real frost of speak of. However winter often has a sting in its tale and it may well be snowing as you read this! Some dry weather will be very much appreciated however, particularly for those in low lying areas, liable to flooding.

to emerge and flower to herald the spring. Of great value now are shrubs with bright colour. Hollies are underrated evergreens which are very hardy and trouble free. Try the variety Northern Lights (see round pic) with glossy gold splashed leaves. Winter jasmine (see main picture) has cheerful yellow flowers that will be knocked back by frosts but should now produce more blooms. Prune after flowering, particularly damaged growth.
Jobs in the Garden
Now is a great time to plant bare-rooted fruit trees and fruit bushes. As long as conditions allow, get them in the ground so that the roots can make some growth before leaves and shoots emerge in the spring. Cane fruits (raspberries, blackberries and their hybrids) should be planted into prepared ground and prune to about 25cm. Don’t forget they will need the support of wires or canes. Currents need space to grow. Plant black, red and white currents five feet apart, into well worked and fertilised soil. Gooseberries need space as well. Choose one of the modern sweet varieties for dessert or culinary use, such as ‘Whinhams Industry’, with dark red luscious fruits.
