Bulbs for all reasons

Now is the time to get to work planning and planting your spring flowering bulbs, and Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day puts some new suggestions into the usual mix.

I’m sure I am not alone when I say bulbs (and this covers corms, tubers, tuberous roots, and rhizomes) bring hope and anticipation for a new season. They are nature’s perfectly formed miracles all rolled into a bulb. Technically, a flower bulb is really an underground storehouse and flower factory, and within the bulb is just about everything the plant will need to sprout and flower at the appropriate time.

Timing is important. After this year’s warm summer, the arrival of autumn rain will provide better planting for setting bulbs into borders or perhaps naturalising within lawns. We also normally need to wait until frosts curtail our potted displays and with it a great excuse to start planning our containers for the spring. Most bulbs – large flowered Dutch Crocus, Grape Hyacinths (Muscari), Daffodils, Hyacinths and Narcissi benefit from being planted by the end of November at

the latest. Tulips respond better to delayed tactics and you can plant right up to the end of the year, soil and weather conditions allowing. Many customers and staff at the Garden Centre have even reported good results planting Tulips into the New Year, so there are options.

Depth of planting bulbs in the open ground is pretty straightforward. Work out the planting depth of a bulb by roughly measuring the bulb from base to tip and doubling or tripling this length – this figure is the rough planting depth. For example, a 5cm (2in) high bulb should be 10-15cm (4-6in) below soil level. One of the reasons bulbs fail to flower is simply because they are not planted deep enough, this is a common problem with Narcissi and Tulips. Set the bulbs in the hole with their ‘nose’, or shoot, facing upwards. Space them at least twice the bulb’s own width apart. Replace the soil and gently firm with the back of a rake. Avoid treading on the soil as this can damage the bulbs. If you are planting in really heavy clay soil it may be worth working in some horticultural grit into the soil to help drainage.

When it comes to planting up containers with bulbs we have more planting options. Depending on the height of your pot (or basket) you can set bulbs in layers, starting quite low to the bottom of the pot with Tulips selecting varieties that grow 30-45cm (12-18in) tall. Add another layer of the container compost and then add either Daffodils or Narcissi, again varieties that grow 30-40cm (12-15in) in height are ideal.

Continue to add compost and set the final layer of shorter, early flowering bulbs such as Crocus or Snowdrops and then cover. If all goes to plan you should then have sufficient space to place some seasonal hardy Pansies and Violas with trailing Ivies (Hedera) at the top of the pot. The final bulbs I like to place in between these plants are a few blue or white flowered Grape Hyacinths. Their tuft-like leaves and long flowers blooms work well in between these plants. The running order of flower from this planting would be Snowdrop, Crocus, and Narcissi/Daffodil, Grape Hyacinths and Tulips. Do allow 8-12 bulbs, depending on their size, per layer for a punchy display.

Oh, the bulbs will push through the layers easily enough, even with all the root competition from the rest of plants!

As far as the compost for pots, use a mix of three parts multi-purpose compost with one part grit. For long-term container displays, use three parts John Innes No 2 compost mixed with one part grit.

Bulbs can be pushed through the sides of traditional sphagnum moss hanging baskets.

However if you use solid baskets, you can still two-layer your bulbs with great effect. The key is to use ultra compact bulbs such as Crocus (consider ‘Cream Beauty’, ‘Pickwick’ and ‘Jeanne d’Arc’), including the species types such as Crocus tommasinianus ‘Ruby Giant, Grape Hyacinths, Dwarf Narcissus such as ‘February Gold’ is one of the best as well as Gregii tulips, including ‘Red Riding Hood’, ‘Red Hunter’ and ‘Dwarf Praestans’.

Water bulbs regularly when in active growth, but you can reduce watering once the leaves start to die down and then through the dormant season. However, continue to check pots in winter, ensuring they do not dry out completely. Bulbs in pots must be fed if you intend to keep them going for another season. Liquid feed with a high potash fertiliser such as Phostrogen from March until the leaves have died down.

Crafting your bulbs in and around the garden can really transform lacklustre areas in the spring, often giving locations a new lease of life. Naturalising bulbs in grassy areas using species Daffodils and Snake’s-head Fritillarias (Fritillaria meleagris), in generous-sized clumps is always a winner. Likewise, simply planting Anemone blanda with Scilla siberica set between shrubs or in clumps beneath deciduous trees is a real joy. If you have a few trees or small woodland, then Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) and English Bluebells (Scilla non-scriptus) will establish quickly and be a winner for years to come. However, don’t underestimate the value of Anemone (Anemone blanda), Crocus (Crocus tomasinianus), Cyclamen (Cyclamen hederifolium), Dog’s-tooth violet (Erythronium dens-canis), Glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa luciliae), Scilla (Scilla sibirica), Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravelye Giant’) and Winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis).

Useful pointers: • Aim to plant in groups of at least five, as the more bulbs that are grouped together, the better the display. Typically, 25 to 50 bulbs may be required to make an impressive show.

• A single colour of Narcissi or Tulips can be really effective in a statement container. Avoid over fussy displays - simple and elegant generally works well.

• Wallflowers (available as bare-rooted transplants) associate well with Tulips as they flower at around the same time. Add to this their wonderful fragrance you have a combination fit for a Queen, here planted in the beds at the front of Buckingham Palace.

• Bulbs in pots, if used only for one display, can be planted much closer together, so allow a bulb’s width, no less, as you don’t want to overcrowd the display.

• Keep your border displays simple; one, two or three colour often gives greater impact. To help extend the flowering season select a number of different varieties.
