Bites and Stings These are usually more painful than harmful. For most bites, apply a cold compress and add bite/sting cream. If stung in mouth, give an ice cube to suck.

Call an ambulance if there are breathing difficulties.

Sunburn Get out of the sun. Calamine lotion will ease soreness and itching. Use an aftersun cream (aloe vera gel is great). Increase fluids to keep hydrated.

For severe sunburn or if there are signs of heat exhaustion/dehydration see a GP. Heat rash Sponge with cool water and pat dry. Apply calamine lotion.

The Waddesdon Woof began in 2011 as a one-off dog show to showcase fun ways of effective dog training, how to be a responsible dog owner without it being a chore and generally to promote enjoying dogs and their amazing abilities. Bump Bambini and Beyond Bump Bambini and Beyond are delighted to be bringing the Brackley Baby Fayre back for its second year.

The event will have local companies promoting their business, products and services for pregnancy, birth, babies, toddlers and the family.

Among many others that will be exhibiting will be, Smallprint who produce pieces of handcrafted jewellery that captures children’s fingerprints in polished fine silver, Musical Minis who will be giving a taster of their baby/toddler music group, Birthpoint who provide antenatal and postnatal courses, and Gift Giving Memories who produce wonderful keepsake gifts.

This is a great chance for local companies to show off what they have to offer, and also to help parents/parents-to-be to be able to get all they need for their pregnancy and beyond.

We will also be announcing the winner of the Brackley Cute Kid Photo Competition, which has been run in conjunction with Fiona Baker Photography. The winner will be announced at 2pm. On the day Fiona will also be taking photos for our ‘Baby of the Fayre’ Competition. So if you didn’t make the ‘Cute Kids’ competition there’s still the chance to win a fantastic picture of your little one.

The aim of the Fayre is to re-enforce the Brackley community spirit, raise awareness of the products and services available locally and also to help parents to be and parents to get all the information and products they need.

Plus refreshments, and plenty of buggy friendly space so you can take time to browse the stands and exhibitions.

Once in a Blue Moon....

I’d use that phrase to mean ‘very rarely’, but what actually is a Blue Moon? Here are the facts....

•The next one is due on 31st August, and before you ask – no, it won’t be coloured blue! It’s name for the second Full Moon in a calendar month, so as it’s the second Full Moon in August, it’s a Blue Moon.

•It only happens once every two and a half years or so, and can never occur in February, as there aren’t enough days in the month – a Full Moon occurs every 29 days.

•A Blue Moon is considered to have great powers by those who believe in mysticism and witchcraft – the positive power of the Full Moon is said to be three times stronger when it is a Blue Moon.

•As to a moon that is coloured blue – it can happen, caused by volcanic eruptions or other natural phenomena, but the likelihood of a blue-coloured moon occurring on the date of the next Blue Moon on 31st August is fairly remote!!

August / September The return of the garden makeover, but with a twist!

Now here’s a question, asks Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day, would you like your garden made over in front of millions of people on television? Before you all get excited, it’s just a question not an invitation! The latest kick-start to the Ground Force-like format is now appearing on our screens. Recently, Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Garden on ITV pushed the boundaries with wonderful stories of families and individuals deserving a well-earned help with their gardens and coming shortly, The Flower Pot Gang on BBC One. You’ll be hearing quite a bit about this new departure for eco-gardening as this programme goes into the heart of the community to transform neglected outdoor plots of land into life changing spaces for various communities across Britain.

The cast line up is certainly

different – Anneka Rice, (C4’s Treasure Hunt, Challenge Anneka and weekend presenter on Radio2), Phil Tufnell, (cricketer and presenter) and Joe Swift (pictures right), the popular designer/ gardener from Gardeners’ World. Essentially, a bit like DIY SOS, that’s the one with Nick Knowles and his madcap tradesmen, however in this new wave of programmes, it’s the back story which makes this new genre of makeover show more appealing to viewers.

But, does it teach us much about gardening?

Well, certainly in an entertainment format to see Alan or Joe describing plants and actually planting them must be good for us as viewers to be inspired. Does it dilute or trivialise gardening?

The Garden i n August different levels, all these need to be done first otherwise you will be creating more work in the future. Be realistic, too, with your plans – set a budget and stick to it. Do your homework, go and have a look at how other gardeners have created particular features or planting schemes in their gardens, that’s why this time of the year is great for garden visiting. There are hundreds of gardens open under the National Garden Scheme (NGS), so do check your local ones.

Gardeners’ World - is losing viewers, currently just over 2 million when it used to be 6 million, you can see we need all the help we can muster to keep gardening topical, interesting and above all do-able.

So, what tips can these makeover shows provide us for our own gardens? Well, I think structure is the key to a good garden, so planting trees (ornamental or fruit), establishing hedges and putting in place those slower-growing plants which are going to take the longest to establish.

When visiting, take a note pad, pencil and camera and be open to ideas. so a major saving can be made if you want to create a posh avenue or a coppice of whitestemmed birch. Continuing on the plants theme, often you end up with a long list of plant wants, so creating your own wish-list should be a priority as plants can sometimes be difficult to source.

We find customers often bring in such lists and its a simple task of establishing a) they are available b) they may have changed their names c) what’s available, how much and if quantities are required, the availability question. Do try and use reasonably up to date reference books as many varieties of plants do go out of favour and can be tricky to locate, although we are happy to provide alternatives if required.

Impulse buying big plants in the summer often provides the instant effect we desire, however a plant costing say £9.99 may be purchased in a smaller pot so you can plant three of the same plant for the same or less money, but the overall effect will be at least twice as good the next year!

These are practical pointers the TV fail to mention, even on Gardeners’ World, which is a shame.

Finally, a garden, whatever its size, shape, style or theme, is never really finished, its a ongoing project, something we actually love to tweak, modify or re-vamp as our family grows or as our requirements change. But the fact we want to get outside and do something is really what enjoying our gardens all is about, isn’t it? And I for one don’t mind if Alan or Joe gives me the kick-start we need to love our gardens!

The Gard en i n Aug ust TOP TIP: Make sure you know the orientation of your garden. South facing gardens provide a great opportunity for sun-loving plants, especially if you want to create a tropical theme to your garden. However, it would be hopeless for shade loving Japanese maples, many ferns and woodland-type plants that require a degree of dappled shade. Use walls and fences as planting opportunities, especially if you have a small plot.

Using vertical height can really enhance and attract the eye away from the obvious end of the garden. Remember the art of illusion; heights often adds welcome depth to the garden vista, so obelisks, statuary, a tripod of runner beans or sweet peas can be a clever and reasonably easy way of getting the effect.
