The wind blows wild, it rains and pours and darkness lengthens by the day. The least hardy gardeners are already shut up indoors for the season and the nation’s favourite gardening TV show goes off air.

So this month should be a short to do list.

My November must-dos are: planting up some seasonal containers, underplanted with spring bulbs, cramming in evergreens and cheery violas. Pop them near your doors so when you do venture out you can appreciate them.

November in the garden...

frozen solid. I give some of my roses a bit of a prune if the gales are blowing stems around too much. It is a good time to plant garlic as it needs a period of cold to get the bulb to form cloves properly. I also like to pop in cold hardy leafy veg like chard, kale etc.

If you have lots of leaves falling you can collect them up to make leaf mould, a really good soil conditioner to break up Northamptonshire clay. You can save yourself some work and merely redistribute the leaves to where you need them providing they don’t blow away!

The bare root planting season is just starting. I love field-grown stock as it’s so much cheaper and the plants seem to get going in the spring far better than their pot grown counterparts. Ask your local nurseryman for roses, native hedging, trees and fruit trees and soft fruit! This also tells you it’s a good time of year to move shrubs and trees that aren’t in the right place. Dig the new hole first so those all-important feeding roots aren’t left exposed and dry. Remember to keep well watered next spring and summer.

Fine range of great plants

Thinking ahead to the C word, start reconnaissance for wreath material foraging. Colourful dogwood stems, conifers, berried trees and of course holly and ivy all make great winter wreaths. Seedheads, pampas flowers are also great additions. Don’t forget to get permission before foraging!

If you do nothing else do try and get out and kick some leaves and smell the air this November, makes the warmth of indoors and a steaming mug even cosier.

Brackley Town’s Matt Lowe on the ball...

The first months of the National league North season have seen a blistering start to the campaign by Kevin Wilkin’s Brackley Town side. A single defeat and a string of wins saw Saints take top spot alongside a fine run in the FA Cup. New players have been brought into the team with young Twariq Yusuf making an especially remarkable start scoring on his debut with the late winner at Chorley and scoring a spec-

tacular effort at Kidderminster Harriers in another excellent win on the road. Louis Lomas at centre back has also settled in quickly and become a regular feature of the side.

In the FA Cup Saints entered the competition at the 2nd qualifying round stage and beat Coalville town to progress. The game featured Brackley captain Gaz Dean and his brother who turned out for Coalville, a story that found all the big headlines. In the 3rd qualifying round a replay was needed to overcome Hanley Town. The first tie was broadcast live on-line by the BBC on a day of terrible weather

and it took the replay at St James Park to make it through.

Saints have built a strong tradition of success in the FA Cup and FA Trophy.

Another set of exciting possible next ties await if they can continue this current run. FA Trophy games start soon also.

The new Venue is now fully open and proving a big hit with supporters on match-days and the wider Brackley public through a range of events including Comedy Nights, music events and private bookings.
