Brackley Town has started the new football season as last year – like an express train! Going into September with four wins from six games and undefeated a particularly impressive statistic reveals just a single goal conceded. This highlights the all round strength of Brackley’s team and offers encouragement for the long months ahead. Manager Jon Brady has brought in several new players to replace a number of departing players while retaining the core squad from last year’s highly successful first campaign in the Conference North. Off the pitch the club has completed its ground improvements with the new 3G pitch the highlight.

The pitch was generously funded by the Football Foundation with South Northants Council support and provides a fantastic facility for the club and the wider community. The new terracing has already proved popular with supporters and enhances the St James Park ground.

The club has appointed a new General Manager.

Janene Butters is leading the commercial and sponsorship development of the club as it cements its position at this level of non-league football.

The club’s new website supports the many activities at the club including the many junior teams and opportunities for the community and local businesses to make use of the club’s outstanding facilities. Puppy Love Will Pay Off

Rearing a puppy takes dedication, patience and lots of time. From the minute they open their eyes, these cute little bundles of joy rely on their mum and then their master, or mistress, to raise them in safety and health.

Psychological development takes place in four phases. From the moment of birth, for the first two weeks all their time is consumed by nursing, sleeping and staying close to mum and siblings as the senses gradually develop. The transitional phase in the third week of life sees the puppy start to take an interest in its surroundings as its eyes and ears open and sharp little baby teeth appear.

All of the sensory organs are properly developed by four weeks and the pup starts to try and get out of its pen, curious to see what's on the other side, while playing and clumsy tussles with siblings are accompanied by hesitant barking and even tiny growls!

Play is a vital component of a dog's everyday life for healthy and proper development. The basic rule of proper rearing of a dog is consistency. Once a rule is established, it should be followed by all members of the household.

Dogs communicate with us by barking and tail wagging which expresses their emotions, mood, fears, stress, and even signals its readiness to attack. When the tail is curled, it is a sign that the dog is feeling cautious, and when it is horizontal, it means the dog is content. Barking is normal canine behaviour and the intensity and manner is particular to each individual animal.

Yarn Bombing Hits Brackley

Yarn Bombing? What on earth is that, you may well wonder?

Wikipedia calls yarn bombing a type of graffiti or street art that uses colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn instead of paint or chalk. Yarn bombers aim to liven up a dull area whilst entertaining passersby. Of course, unlike paint, the type of graffiti isn’t permanent!

Yarn bombing has taken some parts of the world by storm – recently the Andy Warhol bridge in Pittsburgh, USA was adorned with knitted blankets. Several British sea side towns have embraced the idea and yarn-bombed areas have become tourist attractions this summer.

So, prepare to be amused, bemused and impressed as yarn bombing comes to Brackley.

Earlier this summer, keeneyed Brackley residents may have noticed a hanging basket filled with crocheted and knitted flowers and foliage taking pride of place in the marquee at The Red Lion pub’s music festival event or hanging outside the Courtyard Mews. A crochet covered tennis racket appeared in the Katharine House Hospice charity shop window during Wimbledon fortnight, much to the delight of passers-by. A few weeks ago, crocheted blooms could be spotted amongst the flower beds outside the Old Hall Bookshop. The rumour is that there is more yarn bombing to come!

Who is responsible? No one knows for certain. Rather like Banksy and other guerrilla graffiti artists, yarm bombers prefer to remain anonymous.

It adds to the intrigue!

If you feel inspired by any yarn bombing you may see around town and want to learn to crochet or knit, or even just brush up on your existing skills, a new craft shop may offer a solution.

The Garden in October As I write this the fine summer weather has broken and our first serious rain has fallen which the parched land has eagerly gobbled up. After two seriously warm months the rain was always due. The question is: will nature allow us a little more warm sunny weather?

Lo o k i n g G o o d Late flowering plants are invaluable as autumn approaches.

Caryopteris clandonensis is a small shrub with spires of lovely blue flowers (see pic.)

These plants grow best in full sun and will tolerate dryish soils.

Many of the modern rose varieties will flower in the autumn, if dead headed and tidied regularly. Rose ‘Kent’ is a ground cover form but can be grown as a shrub, even in a pot (plenty of food and water) The pretty white flowers can sometimes persist till December.

Nature on our Doorstep Just 4.5 miles west of Brackley, there’s a real haven of peace and tranquillity.

Farthinghoe Nature Reserve was once a landfill site but has been gradually transformed into an oasis of wildlife, wildflowers, and insects. It covers approximately four hectares.

The flora within the Reserve is a feast to the eyes – many of the flowers found at Farthinghoe are unique to the local area. There are areas of open grassland, woodland and ponds providing ideal growing conditions for a wide range of plants. Carefully positioned seats allow you to stop for a while to relax and enjoy the beautiful views.

Farthinghoe Nature Reserve is home to over 100 species of bird such as warblers, green woodpeckers, and log-tailed tits. Sparrowhawk, raven,

red kite and buzzard can often be seen in the skies overhead.

More than 27 types of butterflies have been recorded during the summer months. Other insects include dragonflies and damselflies, crickets and grasshoppers. On a warm day, visitors may spot a grass snake basking in the sun. In the past few months, numerous mammals have been spotted, including mice, shrews, bats and deer (muntjac and roe deer are regular visitors).

Managed by the Brackley and District Wildlife Trust and looked after by Volunteer Reserve Warden Tim Pridmore, the Nature Reserve is open throughout the year. Dogs are allowed but should be kept on leads. Parking is on the road verge on the railway bridge on Purston Lane.
