good customer care, punctuality, fair pricing and a reliable service no matter how small the job.

Stuart Clarke, owner of Clarke’s Plumbing and Heating runs a small family run business based in Brackley. He has over 28 years experience in the Plumbing and Heating industry. Having served a 4 year apprenticeship with Welbeck Heating Ltd, he successfully gained City & Guilds qualification at basic and advanced craft level covering plumbing, heating, hot/ cold water systems, gas, above and below ground drainage. He went onto work for Valliant and Baxi-Potterton who are two of Europe’s largest manufacturers of gas boilers and hot water equipment, both as a field service engineer and then more recently as a technical officer giving technical advice and fault finding assistance to engineers and homeowners. He believes passionately in good customer care, punctuality, fair pricing and a reliable service no matter how small the job. Offering manufacturer trained levels of experience, specialising in servicing, repair and diagnostic work of Baxi-Potterton and Valliant appliances and other makers too. If an appliance is broken, misbehaving or just needs a service he can carry out the work using the manufacturers genuine spare parts, saving you the unnecessary costs and upheaval of replacing an appliance. Should you decide that you would prefer to replace an older/faulty appliance then he would be happy to carry out a site visit and supply a detailed no obligation quote. He can also carry out a wide range of services covering all aspects of domestic plumbing and heating. 6

Getting Divorced in Later Life With the rate of divorce in England and Wales steadily increasing among people over the age of 60, many are looking to solicitors for legal advice on how to move on with their lives.

Whilst the process of divorce remains the same for any married couple, those in later life with greater assets, perhaps including a pension or mortgagefree property, may have more to consider from a financial perspective. Some couples are able to reach a swift and amicable solution on how to divide their finances. When direct agreement proves difficult, couples can enter mediation to avoid the cost and trouble of court.

Mediation allows a couple to meet with a trained, neutral third party and discuss aspects of the breakdown of their relationship. Whilst mediators are unable to advise, they can provide information and cost-effective guidance through the process of financial disclosure.

For some divorcing couples there may seem no alternative but an application to court to resolve financial matters. While this may seem potentially costly, it remains a necessary option when one party shows unwillingness to negotiate fairly and openly.

Obtaining specialist advice from a Family Lawyer at the earliest opportunity is always advisable.

For more information, please contact Gemma Davison on 01869 222310, or email gdavison@se-law.co.uk.

Pic: action from recent ga against Darlington (Brackley in

Strength to strength

Brackley Town's National League North season goes from strength to strength and is already in stark contrast to last season's struggle. Kevin Wilkin has fashioned a team that is altogether more resilient and competitive.

12

me at home n red/black)

The recent 2-2 draw at St James Park against highly fancied Darlington was a case in point. The former league team was twice ahead but Saints were never beaten, drawing level twice and enjoying the better chances to win the game. Former Aston villa striker, Stefan Moore, was signed on loan and featured against Darlington in another signal that this season Brackley means business. Alongside the more consistent form in the league has been another good run in the FA Cup. Last season Saints navigated the qualifying rounds to reach the first round for only the third time in the club's history eventually exiting to League Two side Newport County in a replay. Again this season this feat has been equalled with the defeat of Southern League Beaconsfield and the excitement of a first round tie has been felt around the club. Full details of up-coming fixtures and social events at the club are available on the club website. www.brackleytownfc.com

Cllr Caryl Billingham Presents Awards at Brackley

It was a great night of squash at the Manor Road club on Friday, 30th September. Guest of honour SNC chairman Cllr Caryl Billingham was present to witness the squash finals in her home town, beginning with Martin Hall putting his junior squad through their paces before the main events. The singles semi- finals went with form as expected, Tim Walton

14

defeating Martin Hall 9-3, 9-0 and 9-1 and tournament favourite Sean Smith beating Wayne Dobbins 108, 9-1 and 9-0. Sean was surprised by the quality of Wayne’s game in the first set but was able to move up a gear to get through to the final. While Tim and Sean rested before their showpiece masterclass the large crowd of members,

family, friends and guests were delighted to witness a great Handicap Final contest between Richard Neat and Dave Cunningham. This was a 20 minute contest of non-stop squash, whoever was ahead in points at time up would be the winner. Richard was given a 10-0 handicap lead at the start and he progressed to 13 ahead after the first few minutes of the battle. The handicap committee seemed to have done their homework well, as Dave cleverly clawed back the deficit to 24-30 after 10 minutes and 35-36 after 15 minutes. At this stage it looked like anybody’s game but Richard had paced it very well and he ran out winner 50-41 at the final bell. What a thrilling final the main event turned out to be – classy Sean Smith against true grit Tim

y Squash Finals Night

Walton, currently the best two players at the club. To everybody’s surprise Tim took the first game 9-3 in the best of five contest with some superb retrieving from the back corners. Sean knew he had a massive task on his hands with Tim in this form and his determination to keep the crown he first achieved last year. The second game was all Sean’s, 9-0, with the some of the most accurate and hard hitting squash the club has seen for some time. At 4-4 in the third game it looked as though Sean was wearing down Tim’s resistance but a long stretch for a drop shot at the front seemed to aggravate a long term hip injury for the younger player. This proved to be the case but Tim still had to produce his best squash to stay ahead and take the match in a 3 games to 1 victory. Andy Bright, club chairman, was pleased to introduce Cllr Caryl Billingham for the presentation of trophies to the winners and runners-up. Many thanks to Virgin Experience Days for the prize of a flying lesson for the winner of the handicap – although, as Richard is afraid of heights, it could be a day to remember. It’s the 35th year since the Squash Club has been in existence and it was a fitting night’s entertainment for all.

Every year, in the run-up to Bonfire night, my male friends and colleagues who are usually clean-shaven, start cultivating new facial hair – they’re growing a `tache to raise cash - so what’s that all about? Movember, as it’s known, is the brainchild of a charity which has the laudable aim of preventing men dying too young. It was started by two friends in Australia in 2003, and is now a global phenomenon, with over five million people around the world fundraising for the whole of November, in aid of

16

Men’s health promotion. It’s not only diseases such as cancer which cause men to die before their time – mental illness is known to be a major problem, with the typical male ‘stiff upper lip’ meaning that men don’t share their problems until it’s too late – preventing suicide amongst young men is a main aim of the charity. So, what can you do? Get sponsored!! If you’re a guy, grow a `tache, raise some cash, do your bit. If you’re a girl, why not sponsor your friends and colleagues, or how about holding an event to raise funds for this worthwhile cause? There are many ways that you can help, so why not check out uk.movember.com and see how you can fundraise today?

If you have pets, this time of year is certainly not their favourite time. Juggling the needs of your animals whilst still wanting to celebrate Bonfire Night isn’t easy, but I have a few top tips to make things go as smoothly as possible. For cats, make sure you can keep them indoors from dusk onwards – if you work late, keep them in all day at this worrying time of year – an extra litter tray and dish of dry complete food, along with a scratching post to spare your chairs and a bowl of fresh water, will ensure they don’t miss their forays outside for the few days they need to stay in. For dogs, rescued pets and those breeds that

are most sensitive to noise will need the most TLC. Being there for your pet can help, but if you’re taking the family to a fireworks display then leaving your dog in a familiar room with toys and their bed and putting the radio on to mask the sudden whistles and bangs will help. Make sure you’ve walked your dog before dark, as leaving a stressed pet with a full bladder won’t make anyone happy. If your dog gets in a real state, like my Border Collie, think ahead about the best way to protect them from themselves. Speak to your vet about methods to calm your pet, and look at the possibility of using a suitably sized puppy crate to keep them safe and prevent them harming themselves or your home, whilst the display is going on nearby.

Gardening

Well, the Indian summer did happen as promised, with plenty of dry, barmy sunshine and some northerly and easterly winds. Does this mean we have another mild wet winter to come, following the last three months of pretty decent sunny warm weather? Can you dig it? If the soil of your vegetable plot is dry enough, then “yes you can!” Now is a great time to work over the plot, adding organic matter such as well rotted farmyard manure or garden compost. The frosts to come will break up clods and leave a nice tilth for sowing and planting later. Fruit machines Now is the ideal time to plant fruit trees and bushes. How about black and red currants and gooseberries for soft fruit, all relatively easy to look after. Do you have room for your favourite eating apple? On a semidwarfing stock, a space of 2.5 metres will be enough particularly if you prune religiously every year. You may need a pollination partner if there is no nearby apple with a similar flowering period. Even better, if space allows, a mini orchard with one or two other fruit trees for the mix. Don’t hesitate to ask your local nursery how the bare root trees and bushes have been looked after from the moment of lifting (digging up) in their original

growing beds - one disadvantage of ordering online! Autumn hues One of the finest colouring trees is Liquidamber Stryaciflua or ‘sweet gum’(see top left pic), often mistaken for a maple with its three lobed leaves. An unusual shrub with brilliant autumn colour is Euonymus Alatus displaying vivid coral foliage and curious pink fruits (see middle pic). Finally, let’s not forget our own native holly. The variety Ilex aquifolium argentea variegata has sumptuous silver markings, glowing red berries (see top right pic) and always raises spirits on a chill autumn day.

As part of the town’s commemorations for the 1914-1918 Great War a ‘Museum for the Day’ will be held within the Magdalen College School, St John’s Site on

Saturday 12 November

between 1000-1600 hrs. This unique opportunity will allow the people from Brackley to view the extensive research already completed on the 68 WW1 personnel listed on the Grade 2 listed Brackley War Memorial and, hopefully, add further information and pictures which will supplement the planned commemorative booklet to be produced and sold on behalf of a future Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. It will also enhance the town’s proposal with regard to the display of the 68 ‘Tower of London’ poppies; which were bought in 2014. Along with this there will be an opportunity to view WW1 memorabilia and battlefield relics, discuss expert photo recognition, view historic uniforms, watch medical re-enactments from the period and take the opportunity to search military and family history. And due to its close proximity to Remembrance Sunday, there will also be poppy memorabilia on sale.
