Well a few days ago I would have bet on this being a mild winter. However, snow is in the air so are we in for a proper freeze up again? You will probably already know the answer to that but anyway the kids love the snow and the low temperatures do have benefits when it comes to pests and diseases

Root of the Problem

Evergreen plants are particularly prone to severe frosts and can be killed by one cold night.

Sometimes a long cold spell will freeze the root system which stops working, resulting in desiccation of the plant. This is more likely with pot grown plants, where the root ball will be cooled by the air surrounding it. Beneath the soil surface the frost will only penetrate a few inches, so leaving root systems safe.

Looking Good

Vibrant winter colour is rare, so when plants produce striking colour on the darkest of days, they really stand out, even if the flowers are of modest size. Witch hazels (Hamamellis sp.) have cute, spidery flowers that range from pale yellow to rich orange red (see pic.) They need moist soils that are acid to neutral for the shrubs to do well.

Another fine example is Thibetan Cherry (Prunus serrula, see pic) This small tree has polished bark that glows orange when lit from behind. It also has small white flowers in the spring and gives good autumn colour.

Hellebores are cheerful harbingers of spring and by choosing different species and varieties can give colour from New Year to Easter and beyond.

Hellebores niger (Christmas Rose) has nodding white flowers in January and February.

Helleborus orientalis flowers from February to April in a range of colours from white to purple with pink and green options. Helleborus argutifolius is taller with spiny greyish-green leaves and cascades of apple green flowers March to May. Hellebores can be

If you are contemplating planting bare root trees or hedging this winter, do try to get it done by the end of February if you can.
