It's been a very busy year for the staff at B3 Fitness since the B3 is a new strength and conditioning gym located on the Buckingham Road Industrial Estate, it offers a extensive range of professional plate loaded equipment, free weights, Olympic lifting platforms, functional fitness Rig, separate CV suite and a strongman yard.

Gym instructor Adam explained to me the benefits of strength and conditioning training. When properly performed, strength and conditioning training can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health, fitness and wellbeing, including increased bone, muscle, tendon and ligament strength and toughness, improved joint function, reduced potential for injury, increased bone density, increased metabolism, improved cardiac function, and elevated HDL (good) cholesterol. The biggest misconception people have when it come to strength and conditioning training is they will develop body builder like physics... this is not true!

Head PT Mark Bruce tells me some of the members before joining thought it would be an intimidating place to come and were amazed by how friendly and helpful everyone is and not just

the staff but other members. To be honest I find that most people who train on a regular basis love to talk about training, how they train and have you tried this exercise... He went on to tell me about how many female members are seeing the benefits of the Rig Class and how some call it their secret weapon!

The Rig is B3's functional fitness circuit class which is run around an impressive piece of fitness equipment called The Rig. The class is offered to everyone on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, Wednesday and Sunday mornings. It's a high intensity circuit class covering all of the fundamentals of functional fitness. In what is proving to be In what is proving to be a challenging season for Brackley Town the recent trip to Stockport County brought the club’s achievement into sharp focus. Just a few years ago Brackley were playing local Tier 8 football. Stockport County on the other hand were at national Tier2 less than 20 years ago. The demise of Stockport, The Hatters, and rise of The Saints is a remarkable story in photographer Tim Carroll itself but one we must not lose sight of as Brackley find the going hard this year.

Playing at Edgeley Park, a stadium of league standard, in front of 2,500 spectators, reminded us of how far The Saints have come under manager Jon Brady and just how high the expectations of supporters have risen.

The game itself was an advert for Conference football. County took the lead, Brackley fought back showing great character only for The Hatters to nick the win with an added time goal. In the cold light of day Saints returned home down the M6 empty handed. But it had been another great experience for everyone associated with the club and another step on the road to fighting back and ensuring the club survives at this level into next season.

After two tabletopping seasons in Conference photographer Tim Carroll North Brackley needs this season to consolidate and come back stronger. There is a tough Winter ahead but a fascinating one.

After a pretty mild couple of months, we would expect some severe winter weather, but my money is still on a mild winter. I should be better advised to put put it on a white Christmas, to compensate a little for the ensuing death and destruction at the nursery!

Jobs in the Garden

The longer the frosts hold off, the more damage will be done by a sudden severe freeze-up. Be prepared to move under protection the less hardy subjects if they are in moveable containers.

Plants staying in the ground can be protected in various ways; Best protection is from ‘double glazing’.

The simplest is bubble wrap, better is a layer of polythene then a lightweight insulating layer with another wrap of polythene to finish, Try to seal to a wide base at ground level to utilise the warmth in the soil.

Ideally these coverings should be used as a temporary measure because plants need to ‘breathe’ even in winter and a warm ‘tented’ plant will make a perfect home for hungry rodents!

Vegetable Garden

If you haven’t done so already, protect Brassicas from bird damage. Netting is simplest, but make sure

the net is pegged to the ground to stop birds entering and getting trapped. If your spring cabbages are 6 inches apart, you can cut alternate plants as winter greens, then earth up the remainder to produce hearts for spring.

If conditions allow, now is ideal for digging the plot and incorporating well rotted manure or compost. The winter frosts will break up clods, particularly useful with a heavy clay soil.

Hedges and Trees and Fruit Trees Now we are in to the ‘dormant’ season, so field grown (rather than container grown) plants are available at nurseries. Bare root subjects range from roses to fruit trees and include the full range of native trees and shrubs suitable for hedging, growing as small groups or planting on a larger scale. Perhaps you could give up a corner of a field, or in a small garden a few native shrubs could be squeezed in.

For a native hedge with a more uniform look consider Beech or Holly (see pic.) which is much underrated.

If it has to be coniferous English Yew gives the classic look and will grow at a reasonable rate if well fed and watered, contrary to popular belief that it is rather slow.
