We love this time of year – the delicious smells, cheerful carol singing, and especially the scrummy food. But with all the rushing around in a festive frenzy, it’s easy to forget that this isn’t a great time for everyone in our community.

Friends of ours recently explained that instead of sending Christmas cards this year, they would be making a donation to a local charity. It’s a great idea and so easy to do.

Season’s Greetings can be sent electronically to those who are able to receive such, and the money saved on cards and postage will be gratefully received by a local group such as the wonderful Katherine House Hospice or the essential Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.

When you’re buying your Christmas food goodies, consider buying a few extra bits for the Brackley Food Bank. The Food Bank aims to provide food for families in need and contributions are welcomed all year round (especially 1 litre cartons of long life milk and fruit juice, breakfast cereals, biscuits, sugar, pasta sauce and tinned potatoes). In the run up to Christmas, they’d also like to add some seasonal items to the bags (Christmas pudding, chocolate coins, custard etc). All donations can be dropped off at Brackley Town Hall between 10 and 12 every Tuesday and Thursday.

Last Christmas Posting Dates Don’t get caught out this year! The last Christmas posting dates for cards to addresses in the UK are:

Tuesday 18th December for Second Class Thursday 20th December for First Class In previous years, heavy snow in the weeks before Christmas caused unexpected delays in postal deliveries so be prepared and send your cards and parcels early this year.

Children who write to Santa by Friday 14th December should get a reply before Christmas but write early to be sure of receiving a special letter.

Letters can be sent to Santa/Father Christmas, Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland, SAN TA1. In the letter you must include the child’s name and address and do remember to attach a stamp to the envelope.

THE MORNING AFTER THE NIGHT BEFORE If you've ever woken up the morning after the office Christmas party and vowed never to drink again as long as you live, then you're probably all too familiar with the most unwelcome reminder of a good night out - the hangover.

A lucky 25% of revellers who are naturally more resistant to the more unpleasant effects of the festive tipple will get away with it, waking up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as usual the following morning. But for the rest of us mere mortals, how can we quell the throbbing head and queasy stomach to make it to the office on time and avoid the pointing and laughing?

What causes a hangover?

Many of the most unpleasant hangover symptoms are caused by one thing: dehydration. Alcohol has a diuretic effect on the body, and the resultant fluid loss is responsible for the thumping headache and dizziness. Alcohol also irritates the stomach lining, causing the accompanying

nausea, and if you're particularly unlucky, vomiting, which in turn can contibute to yet more dehydration. As if that wasn't enough, while it may feel like you sleep the sleep of the dead after a good skinful, alcohol disrupts REM sleep, leading you to feel tired, unrefreshed and sluggish upon waking as your organs try desperately to repair the damage.

However winters typically don’t peak until January or even February as the lack of sun allows these latitudes to continue to cool. That said, maybe after three cold winters on the trot, we may be back to the more common mild ones – fingers crossed, unless you love snowmen and sledging!

For a native hedge with a more uniform look consider Beech , or Holly which is much underrated.

If it has to be coniferous English Yew gives the classic look and will grow at a reasonable rate if well fed, contrary to popular belief that it is rather slow.

Ash Die Back We all need to be aware of this catastrophic disease. Keep a look out for any signs of die back or lesions on the stems at this time of the year, particularly recently planted trees that may have come in from the continent.

Alternative natives to Ash trees include Lime and Beech. For more compact trees Field Maple or Whitebeam with it’s distinctive greyish leaves / pale undersides and red berries.

Xmas Trees – not just for Christmas?

It seems such a shame that so many carefully grown trees are cut off in their prime only to be shredded for compost a few weeks later.

Perhaps try thinking of buying your Christmas tree in a slightly different way: what sort of conifer would you like to see growing in your garden over the years to come, then work backwards from there to the size and type to buy now. An alternative is to buy a pot grown tree that will look good now and in the years to come. Serbian Spruce make a lovely specimen, you can bring it inside and just place in a cool spot away from radiators and keep well watered.

As a point of interest all ‘cut’ Christmas trees keep much better with their stump in water, having cut off the bottom half inch first.

The Team Storms Back Brackley Town’s extraordinary start to life in the Blue Square Bet Conference North took a dip with two defeats in October but the team stormed back to show its mettle regaining top spot and progressing in the FA Trophy.

The season’s first big test off the pitch came with the visit of Halifax Town. A crowd of 522 enjoyed an excellent game that was hard fought as both sides deserved their point. Stewarding and arrangements for the travelling supporters worked very well and the club was complimented by the police.

Early December sees Saints at Workington, the longest journey in the league. Six hours up the M6 is an unenviable trip and an expensive one for the club in providing overnight accommodation.

However this is what football at this national level entails and only mirrors trips in recent years to places as far away as Truro.

On the following Saturday 8 December is one of the season’s biggest and most eagerly awaited games when we entertain Chester. Currently Chester regularly attract over 2000 for home games and a large away following so this will be another Big Day for Brackley.

While the team goes from strength to strength the wider club continues to flourish. A big focus is upon upgrading the St James Park stadium.

These improvements include improved floodlighting and car parking together with a brand new clubhouse and additional terracing to increase capacity. Work on the clubhouse has started and all projects will shortly be underway.

The new clubhouse will provide new changing rooms and meeting facilities. This will also mean that the teams will enter the pitch from a new location. Currently the teams leave their dressing rooms and run out along the half-way line by the main stand. In future they will enter the pitch much further along from the main stand.

Another tradition bites the dust – but for only very good reasons!

If you can get to a game you will be welcomed.
