MAKE PROGRESS Make Progress is a brand new charity established by Brackley resident, Anna Laidlaw. Still in its very early stages, the charity will offer support to people who are struggling with various forms and levels of depression and addiction.

Anna aims for Make Progress to be a One Stop Shop for people to find all the basic information they need online, effectively becoming the ‘In Between’ support that is missing from the Mental Health system.

As well as offering online information and advice, Make Progress aims to provide a buddy system and a 24 hour telephone helpline.

Anna needs support for her worthwhile charity.

HALSE UNITED YOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB Halse United Youth Football Club requires players for the next football season which starts in September 2011 for its current under 13's team. We currently play in the Milton Keynes and Border Counties Youth Football League in division 2.We have a great atmosphere at the club amongst the players and parents. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU NEED LOCAL AUTHORITY CARE ?

There are two elements that combine together when a person is assessed for possible care provision. Firstly, there is a ‘Care-Assessment’ which is by the local authority social services department. The‘care-assessment’ is a structured meeting that covers the person’s current living arrangements, their health and disabilities, and the person’s and their existing career’s concerns and worries. The ‘care-assessment’ may be carried out by one or more health professionals over several visits. In tandem with the ‘Care-assessment’ is the ‘Financial-assessment’ which is undertaken to decide how much a person must contribute to the cost of their care.

All income above £21.90 per week is required to contribute to the cost of fees If their chargeable capital assets (House, Bank accounts, ISA’s, Unit trusts, Shares, etc) exceed £23,000, there will be an expectation to contribute 100% of the difference of the shortfall between their income and the cost of their care.

If capital is held in joint names, only their personal share is taken into account, (there is a common misconception that changing the ownership structure of a home from Joint Tenancy to Tenants in Common, solves a care fee problem… it doesn’t!)

The NHS is responsible for the cost of any Nursing Care element within care home fee structure.

For a more expensive care home, the entire cost can be paid by the resident, but If costs are shared with the local authority, a ‘top-up’ of fees is also possible, BUT this top-up can only be paid by a third party, for instance a family member or charity.

Care home fees are now anything between £3000 and £5000 per month.

Provision of care for the elderly is quite complex and the chances of it happening to you or a loved one is increasing year by year, as we live longer and longer. According to the Office of National Statistics a man currently aged 65, can expect to live on average an extra 17.6 yrs and a woman aged 65 an extra 20.2 yrs, so hopefully we can all enjoy a few more years yet ! 1 Add 1/2 tsp of rose water to 1 tsp of honey and gently apply to the face. Leave it for about 15-20 minutes, and then wash off with tepid water. Honey moisturizes and soothes dry skin, and is gentle enough for daily use.

CRAFTS ON THE ROAD! The Pin Money Craft Cooperative is a fantastic crafters group based in Brackley.

Started three years ago by friends Polly and Rachael, the group has expanded and members now represent a wide range of arts and crafts, including knitting, spinning, glass blowing, jewellery making, and papercrafts.

The Pin Money Craft Cooperative aims to build community through crafts, believing that craft can unite people of all ages and from all walks of life. It is with this in mind that The Pin Money Craft Cooperative organises PubCraft Nights, where you can join like-minded people to craft and chat on the first Monday of every month (7.30pm in The Red Lion, Brackley).

INTRODUCING BRACKLEY PERMACULTURE GROUP The Brackley Permaculture Group is on a mission to restore community spirit to Brackley!

Recently established by a small group of Brackley residents, Brackley Permaculture Group is open to all individuals, groups, clubs, businesses and organisations wishing to work together to promote Brackley’s vitality and community spirit.

Permaculture means different things to different people but is essentially working with nature to create a better world for all. The Brackley Permaculture Group’s first project will be to set up a community vegetable garden to act as a community focal point and teaching resource.

The Group will be meeting every Sunday 5-6pm in the function room of The Greyhound Inn in Brackley.

Primroses make a bright and cheery show. There are new strains available with dark green leaves beneath gorgeous shades of lavender, and dusky pinks (see pic.) Our own native yellow primrose will look delightful if encouraged to naturalise in the wilder parts of the garden.

The Garden in March ornamental trees.

Choosing a tree is a big decision and it’s worth looking at books or taking advice.

Trees with winter interest are especially useful, particularly if planted near the house, for viewing on a cold day. Bark colour is worth considering.

“Prunus serrula” (see pic.) has mahogany bark, that produces amber peelings that looks stunning when backlit. It has small white flowers and yellow autumn leaves.

Now is the time to prune evergreens that were damaged in the winter or simply need reshaping. Also any fruit trees and bushes not yet pruned, better late than never!
